TYLER EIGHMY

Born in New York, I moved to Kansas City when I was four. My biggest influence on my decision to be an architect stemmed from my family. I enjoy solving puzzles, playing bass guitar, and drums.

Born and raised in Jefferson City, Missouri I’ve had a passion for architecture that stems back to my days of playing with Legos. In my free time I enjoy photography and playing with my crazy wiener dog.

Born in the heart of Kansas City, I have a strong passion for architecture. In my free time -though I’m not really sure what that means - I enjoy traveling. I’ve recently traveled to Minneapolis where I hope to create a new hub for sports architecture and entertainment.

Born in Shawnee, KS. Has a Bachelors in Architectural Studies with a minor in Art History. Loves architecture, drawing, and traveling.

PATH TO A NEW HOME Target Center, located in the heart of Minneapolis, was once the center for basketball and exclusive live performances. But after many years of use and the advancement of arena architecture, it no longer competes with other cities in the NBA and concert venue marketplace. The New Target Center Arena, designed by MTAD Architects, promises to not only deliver a new arena that competes with the top venues in the country, but extends urban renewal in the central Minneapolis district. The design of the New Target Center Arena will focus on 3 primary concepts: an interactive and modernized fan experience, exclusive premium amenities that are unique to Minneapolis, and a state-of-the-art facade system that reflects importance of water and rivers to the history of Minneapolis.

02

Minnesota timberwolves + minnesota lynx UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS SADP

The existing Target Center is becoming more and more of an eyesore for the members of the downtown community. Several other cities across the midwest have seen a vast amount of urban renewal due to new arenas built in their downtown areas. For example, the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri along with its Power and Light District has revitalized the urban core of that city. A once desolate and deserted downtown has become a place of culture, arts, and live entertainment. Our firm hopes to take this precedent study and implement it into the downtown area of Minneapolis. The New Target Center Arena will also set the standard in VIP and Premium Amenity services. Our standard suites are far from standard. The suites are larger and create a more interactive fan experience while enjoying the luxuries of a private suite. The New Target Center Arena is also introducing the Wolves Loge and Lounge which creates an exclusive dining experience with and without views to the court. Another premium feature is our Wolves Den. The Wolves Den is a suite that puts you front and center behind the goal line. The Wolves Den includes access to a private club and dance floor; so after the game, you and your friends can party the night away in celebration of a Wolves win! All premium ticket holders (suites and

clubs) will have access to their own private entrance in our VIP club and bar next to the New Target Center Arena. This building is a revitalized bar and club for premium ticket holders. This club is open outside the season and during the season. From the bar you can travel to the second floor and take the skywalk to the New Target Center Arena and watch the Wolves win! One of the key features of the New Target Center Arena is its advanced facade system. The new facade system incorporates the history of Minneapolis and its mills by creating a flowing pattern of metal panels, glass curtain walls, and Minnesota’s own Kasota stone. The Kasota stone reflects the material’s importance in the city as well as creates a visual link to Target Center’s neighbor, Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins. To conclude, GAP hopes to restore the spirit and vitality of the downtown district of Minneapolis with the New Target Center Arena. We want to bring top name concerts and events to the city as well as national and international sporting events. Also, we want to create a genuine and exciting fan experience that reiterates the tradition of Minnesota basketball in Minneapolis.

VISION FOR A NEW FUTURE

CURRENT CONDITIONS

The current Target Center has been home to Minnesota basketball since 1990. After 25 years, the arena is outdated and the design is no longer sufficient for the Minnesota fans. Upon our site visit, we discovered several awkward conditions where the fan experience is lacking. Also, premium ticket holders are being pushed into make-shift ‘premium amenities’ that aren’t competitive with other arenas in today’s market. While there is a sense of dissatisfaction in the current arena, the surrounding area is thriving and becoming the destination for central Minneapolis nightlife. Just down the road is Nicollet Mall, the famed shopping district of Minneapolis. Another center of nightlife and entertainment is the Minneapolis Warehouse District, which is just a block away from the Target Center. Creating a link between the historical context of Minneapolis with the New Target Center Arena is key in creating a successful sports arena for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

SPORTS ARENA OF THE FUTURE The New Target Center Arena will be the new standard in professional sports arena design. The design of the arena is heavily rooted in Minnesota history and culture. One material that is helping communicate this idea is the use of Kasota Stone from nearby Kasota. This stone will line our entrance and welcome visitors to the New Target Center Arena. As one enters the arena, they are immediately connected to all levels of the arena with its open atrium. The New Target Center Arena will also be connected to Minneapolis’ existing skywalk system, which gives visitors another way to access the building. The skywalk also leads to Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins. One of the great features of the site is the public plaza linking the New Target Center to Target Field. The link created by this plaza introduces a fun and exciting fan experience that brings two traditions of Minneapolis sports together. Lastly, the façade of Minneapolis’ new arena, which is rooted in the St. Anthony Falls of the Mississippi River, is the face of the new Target Center Arena. Inspired by the powerful Mississippi, the new façade is fabricated from perforated metal screens. The screen flows and bends around the building similarly to the river, while also providing a centerpiece for downtown Minneapolis.

ENHANCE THE FAN EXPERIENCE The New Target Center Arena promises to bring exclusive premium amenities to the Timberwolves and Lynx professional basketball teams. As a part of the New Target Center Arena, we have created The Den; a two-story VIP club and bar that services Target Center before and after games plus the offseason. It not only serves as an entrance for premium ticket holders, but as the most exclusive club in Minneapolis. It has two full-service bars, two executive lounges, and a private speakeasy for VVIP guests. As for the premium amenities inside of the arena, we have designed three different private suites: a mega-suite, a bunker suite, and a standard suite. In addition to the suites, we have designed several exclusive clubs within the arena. On the event level there’s a club tucked behind the bunker suites so VIP fans can recap the game and connect. Going up the arena, located on the skywalk level, you’ll find Club T. This club with views overlooks the floor so you can converse with friends and watch the Wolves play. Lastly we have our 5-Star Loge which is located on the level above; these seats bring the comforts of a sit-down restaurant to the basketball experience. The New Target Center Arena will provide the most exciting and highest quality fan experience in the NBA.

FLEXIBILITY AND COMFORT In order to cater to the arena market in which Minneapolis is located, flexibility and comfort are a top priority in our design. In addition to basketball, the New Target Center Arena will be able to host professional hockey and big-name concerts. Our design takes into consideration Minneapolis’ potential bid for a NCAA Final Four and can adequately accommodate other national-scale events. In addition to all of these events, the New Target Center Arena will be able to host rodeo, bull riding, monster trucks, circuses, motocross, X-Games, and WWE Wrestling.

NOT TO SCALE

Sports facilities leave some of the largest carbon footprints in buildings today. Our goal is to create an arena that can actually give back to the environment rather than take away from it. We want to establish a precedent in professional sports arena design by achieving a United States Green Building Council LEED Silver accreditation for our projects. The Target Center is no exception. The New Target Center Arena has several features that help eliminate its carbon footprint and creates a better environment for the City of Minneapolis. One of these features are solar panels located on the roof; these panels will help offset some of the electrical cost of the arena and therefore use less coal. Along with this, we will use power from the St. Anthony Falls dam to help offset these electrical costs as well. We will also implement a water collection system that harvests rain water for use in toilets throughout the arena. The New Target Center Arena will not only set the standard in architectural design but from an environmental design standpoint as well.

When it comes to getting more bank for your buck, MTAD will be able to provide the highest quality of service to the New Target Center Arena design at the lowest cost possible. We have estimated the costs of the arena consulting with the top contractors in the country. We were able to use their resources to provide an accurate cost estimate with contingency included (for any unforeseen costs that may occur). We estimate that the New Target Center arena will be complete in fall 2018, ready for the Timberwolves’ 2018-2019 season. Demolition of the existing Target Center will occur in May 2015 and be complete in June 2015. After this point foundations will be laid and the bulk of the construction will begin.
