MISSION
DISCIPLESHIP
It was St. Augustine who observed ‘People travel to wonder at the height of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of the stars; and they pass by themselves without wondering.’ In the 21st Century how easy it is for us to pass by ourselves, distracted by the demands of our digital age. And yet life is the very canvas for our discipleship and we are in danger of missing it. Missing what is going on in ourselves, not stopping to wonder, not stopping to be still. Eugene Peterson paraphrased 1 Peter 3:18 as
selves and find genuine satisfaction.
The future of student mission will rise or fall on the authenticity of disciples in the student world. The call to follow was never meant to be an easy choice, it was, and is, about leaving behind or abandoning certain things and embracing other things. In our effort to become relevant to the culture have we unwittingly lowered the bar for discipleship? Have aspects of discipleship become optional extras that only the very zealous embrace? We have a most urgent task to reaffirm the call to be and make disciples and to apply it to 21st century life.
YOUR LIFE IS A JOURNEY YOU MUST TRAVEL WITH A DEEP CONSCIOUSNESS OF GOD.

‘BEING’ DISCIP LED JAMES EMERY WHITE
It’s a common phrase in Christian circles. We talk of ‘discipling’ someone, ‘being’ discipled, or going where there is a strong emphasis on discipleship. What’s wrong with this picture? More than might meet the eye. If you notice, the language itself puts the entire emphasis on someone, or something, ‘doing’ discipleship ‘to’ someone else. The one being discipled is seemingly passive. In other words, discipleship is something ‘received.’ But that is not the idea of discipleship in the Bible. The word ‘disciple’ is from the Greek word ‘mathetes’ and literally means ‘learner.’ Stop there. Re-read. ‘Learner.’
IF I’M NOT MISTAKEN, THAT PUTS THE ACTION FIRMLY INTO THE LAP OF THE ONE DOING THE LEARNING. THE POINT IS THAT YOU, AS A DISCIPLE, ARE TO BE ACTIVELY LEARNING. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO TAKE UP THE MANTLE OF SELF-DEVELOPMENT. And yes, this suggests a teacher is involved. And yes, we talk about someone going to college to ‘receive’ an education. And yes, Jesus seemed to fill the teaching/equipping role by inviting twelve men (and more than a few women) to do life with him for three years. And yes, they were called “disciples.” But reflect on those early followers. Theirs was an invitation to learn, not to enter into a passive process of being fed. We certainly know that not all of the twelve went to school on Jesus. One in particular didn’t seem to learn much of anything. If discipleship was simply something ‘done’ to you, Jesus failed epically with Judas (I wonder if he ever said he needed to follow another rabbi where he could be better ‘fed’). No, growing in faith is something that can be served by others, but ultimately must be owned personally by ourselves. 4
This is decisive. Too many followers of Christ view discipleship as something that is done to them and for them, akin to a personal enrichment program. Yet the writer of Hebrews made it abundantly clear that people who keep getting ‘fed’ in this way are in arrested development. Once out of infancy, they should no longer need to be fed, but instead be feeding others (Hebrews 5:11-13). But even more disquieting is how we have missed out on what it is we should focus on learning. The back-half of the Great Commission exhorts us to teach new believers to obey what Christ has commanded. And what has Christ commanded? To live out our lives in mission to the least and the lost. In other words, what we are to be ‘learning’ is increased love toward others and increased faith for the task of serving them. We are not to
“GROWING IN FAITH IS SOMETHING THAT CAN BE SERVED BY OTHERS, BUT ULTIMATELY MUST BE OWNED PERSONALLY BY OURSELVES.” be in search of a feeding station that creates a culture of dependency and endless demand for head-knowledge, but a learning environment where an active life of faith is stretched and encouraged.
yourself on the front lines of the cause of Christ, mixing it up with other Christians who sharpen you as iron against iron, and being led by God into unique situations that challenge you at the deepest of spiritual levels.
I know, knowledge is needed. Doctrine matters. We are transformed by the renewing of our minds. But only when what is in the mind translates into obedience to the widow and orphan, the hell-bound and skeptic.
That’s not passive, but active. It’s something that can be served, but never delivered. It takes a church, but only goes so far as the person who is willing to be a true learner.
So what would that kind of discipleship entail? In his book Deep and Wide, Andy Stanley states the practice of many seasoned spiritual leaders in detailing the five primary ways people experience growth in their faith:
practical teaching
private disciplines
personal ministry
providential relationships
pivotal circumstances
In other words, faith is stretched by being in the game, where you are admonished by teachers and leaders, investing in connecting with God through prayer and the Scriptures, putting

WILSON H C RI ? RT FO M CO R FO O G U YO DO RE HE W
Have you asked yourself this question recently? I am asking myself it more often and finding the answers very revealing. I follow a God who promises an ever present counsellor, the Holy Spirit, who is tasked with comforting me. At the same time I have developed a number of coping mechanisms that means I can be comforted, at least for a short while, by much that is around me.
Quick fix comforts for me include switching on the telly, more screen time from my phone or tablet, more desktop research or work or play. It may involve eating something or drinking something. It could be going to the gym or meeting up with a friend. If you take all these things together it could be said I have a balanced lifestyle. Many of these comforts don’t require repentance, they are blessings. So what’s the problem? The issue is that my response to my desire for comfort has an effect on my discipleship.
WHERE I CONSISTENTLY GO FOR COMFORT COULD WELL HAVE THE GREATEST IMPACT ON WHO I AM BECOMING What I allow to form and shape me actually does form and shape me. If my spirituality lacks sharpness or I come across as ‘luke warm’ it may well be I have over comforted myself. This is easily done in the Western world and we are poorer for it. What this means is that many times a day you and me are on the brink of transformation. Opportunities are afforded us when life doesn’t work out as we intended, our emotions feel heavy, we feel out of control, uncertain or stressed, or we just feel tired from a long day. What or who we choose to comfort us at that moment creates a movement for transformation in our lives. That moment, if repeated many, many times, could transform us into a couch potato, a gym addict, a porn addict, a busy body, a gossip, a faithful friend, a bitter cynic, a disciple or just a nice person. The issue is, when I am in need of comfort, am I co-operating with who God says I am and who he is committed to me becoming?
7
IN OUR HEADS… SOLITUDE What we choose to think about in these moments is the start of the process. For many the comfort journey has already started before we act anything out. We can comfort ourselves by playing out an alternative reality in our heads. In our head we choose the response we would make if we were bolder or less inhibited; in our head we choose other people’s responses; in our head we can fantasize about being more popular, appreciated, desirable, intimate or wealthy. In our head we are in full control. What goes on is real, in the sense that it affects how we view ourselves, others and God. It is real in the sense that sin always creates distance in relationships. If we dishonour someone in our head the relationship is affected in person. It is real because as it goes unchecked it has increasing impact on how we act and relate. It seems comfort eating and socialising was an option in Jesus’ culture and there are many accounts of him eating and socialising. In the stories about Jesus he also seemed to be co-operating with who the Father says he is. He was thinking and acting on heaven’s agenda in a way that seemed natural and instinctive, energising and not tiring. It was as though he was already comforted and was now able to share that comfort with others.
‘But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.’ (Luke 5:16) If Jesus modelled and embraced this practice, how much more do we need to embrace it in our culture of constant status updates, relentless advertising and ever expanding sources of news and information? Solitude is perhaps the greatest discipleship pathway we have and is also the most comforting. It is at the heart of discipleship because there is no hint of consumerism and it requires self-leadership to embrace. Time spent in solitude reveals to us our yearnings and longings and where we go for comfort, either in our heads or in reality. It reveals some awkward and uncomfortable truths about our self worth, security and sense of significance. It also reveals secrets and perspectives that God is longing for us to hear and is just waiting for our full attention to share them. When we have spent time alone with God we are free to interact with things/others in a different way. We aren’t consciously or subconsciously looking for those things/people to feed our core needs and desires because our core has already been comforted. It could be said that all discipleship takes place outside our ‘comfort zone’. It is a place of risk, adventure, pain, suffering, uncertainty, faith, hope and love. Let’s embrace these wild and untamed spaces just as Jesus embraced the wilderness. Comfort is overrated and transformation is at stake.

UNTAMED
MISSIONAL DISCIPLESHIP Al and Deb Hirsch want to get discipleship out of the four walls of the church and into the world around us Your book Untamed is about Missional Discipleship. What is that? Al: If you look at exponentially growing movements such as the early church, the growing church in China today, and Methodist revivals in the past, one of the key factors in that is that they focus on disciple making. And not just prayer, bible study and the basic disciplines, all of which is absolutely right, but discipleship that really makes an impact in our world in the cause of Christ. Deb: We’re called to be active participants in bringing in the Kingdom. It’s about how we actively engage with our neighbours, how we‘re using our resources to help the poor.
In the book you warn against the ‘surreptitious danger of domestication’. How can students avoid this as they grow older? Al: Martin Luther King once said: ‘The only real revolutionary is a man who has nothing to lose’. Young people haven’t got much to lose yet but it’s interesting what happens as you leave university, get a job, and make a buck load of money. In the name of that, you will begin to defend it. In Untamed we explore how an idol detracts our loyalties away from the love we give to God. We can pretty much worship anything, so my best advice would be to watch your attachment to things. Your possessions, if you’re not careful, will possess you.
“Do simple things that keep...
Deb: Never lose a focus on mission. When we first started our church community in Melbourne (Australia) we were predominantly young adults with few commitments to tie us down. Then people began to have relationships, get married and then, particularly when children came in to the picture, a need for a sense of safety and security seemed to come. All of a sudden people were not actively involved in forms of mission anymore.
How have you done this in your own lives? Al: When we lived in Australia we chose to live in Melbourne’s red light district. Because we actually lived there we were forced to engage in a significant way. Deb: Coming to Los Angeles (where we currently live), initially we lived in the suburbs and we were removed from
The only real revolutionary is a man who has nothing to lose... Never lose sense of the wildness of Jesus. We have a saying in our church: ‘take one step out of your comfort zone, then take another one’. Do simple things that keep you a little bit on the edge, rather than safe in your own little home. Have people for dinner you would never have for dinner. Get your church community to hold you to account on this.
anything remotely similar to what we’re used to. Then I took on the role of leading a church in downtown LA called Tribe of LA, basically a bunch of artists and vagabonds. It’s an edgy community. We’ve also chosen to live in community houses with others for our whole marriage. I’ve just turned 50, and Al’s 53, and we’ve had to consciously decide to keep ourselves on the edge and do these things as we’ve grown older (and a bit more tired!) Al: Safety and security, convenience and consumerism, those things are really dangerous for our spirit.
you a little bit on the edge...”
How can we tackle the tension between being in our culture but not being of it? Al: With a lot of discernment. Whatever culture you’re in, find in it what you can affirm, but discern what isn’t so great. Deb: But in that, sometimes we can get so freaked out about being in different uncomfortable settings. I think you should be yourself in those places. Trust the God that’s in you; just love people and live out of who you are and the one you follow. We’re followers of a man who did hang out in those places, but he wasn’t phased and he was who he truly was when he was there.
Al: And involve other people as you engage in culture to reduce your vulnerability to it. We tend to think of discipleship as an autonomous, individual thing of our own making but actually, we’re really not that good on our own. Any final thoughts? Al: Keep using your brains. A lot of people leave university and never read a book again and that’s not good. Loving the Lord with our minds requires that we engage intellectually.

IWANMATHESON Iwan Matheson is a fresher studying Criminology and Criminal Justice in York. He is also a volunteer with a Prison Chaplaincy in a Youth Offender’s Institute. What does your work involve? I get alongside the young people aged 15-18. I assist with running Alpha courses, discipleship groups and 121 mentoring alongside Chaplains and other volunteers. We provide support for the faith needs of the young people, plus emotional support; being a caring figure they’ve maybe never had in their lives. How has it grown your own faith? It really helps me to understand what other people have been through. Even though these young lads have been through some horrific things in their lives they’re still searching for hope. That drives me to bring that hope to them, to show them that they can be released from the stuff of their past. I love the line in the hymn To God
be the Glory: ‘the vilest offender who truly believes, that moment from Jesus a pardon receives.’ That’s my driving force for these young lads. No matter what they’ve done, no matter who they are, they are a child of God, loved by God and created by him. Jesus died for them just as much as he died for me and that is really inspiring. Is it hard sometimes? We might put in three or four hours a week of mentoring with a young lad for two or three years and the minute they get released they decide they don’t want to follow Jesus anymore. It’s heart wrenching because you want to see the young people know Christ and follow him but you have no control over that. You just do what you can.
Take every opportunity you get given...
STUDENT INTERVIEW 14
Iwan with his mentee Crew. Crew is living in the community, is in employment and has great hopes for the future.
You have days where you just can’t get through to them. You might be doing a discipleship group. You’ve prepared it, you’ve put it forward and they just will not listen. They need me to be consistent though. I think it’s really important that regardless of the fact that I might not feel like going in, or I’d just rather spend the day in the sun, the lads need consistency. They need people to care. They’ve had lives where people haven’t been around for them, so I have to decide that no matter how I’m feeling I’ll be there for them. How did you start doing this? I was the last person you’d ever pick to be in prison ministry. I grew up with a real fear of crime to the point where when I was young I wouldn’t go out in the dark on my own, so to think I work with prisoners is quite a laugh. My mate’s mum is a Prison Chaplain and one day she asked me if I’d like to go for a visit. While I was there, there was a guy called Gram Seed, an ex-offender and a Christian, talking to the lads about his life. We were walking out of the prison, I’d known him five hours, and I turned to him and said ‘I’d like to
I was the last person you’d ever pick to be in prison ministry give up a year to come and work for you’. Straightaway he said yes. I did an internship last year with Gram’s charity, Sowing Seeds Ministries, working across jails of every security category; male and female; young and old; all across the UK. I now volunteer in a Young Offender’s Institute for 15 hours a week as well as studying full time. What advice would you offer to other students? No matter who you are, God’s got a plan for you and whilst I was the last person you’d ever imagine in prison ministry that was where God called me. Be brave about what you do. Take every opportunity you get given, because you don’t know where it will lead. Put God at the forefront and let him decide what’s going to happen, dream big dreams and God will provide. THE ADVENTURE OF A
LIFETIME CAN’T AFFORD A GAP YEAR? PIPPA ELMES THINKS WE SHOULD TREAT UNI AS ONE LONG GAP ‘YEAR’ Gap years abroad are obviously adventures. You’re moving to a new place with a different culture where you’ll eat different food, meet different people and be out of your comfort zone. Its easy to imagine sharing your faith on a mission trip where you don’t know anyone, others are alongside you and anyway, it’s what you’re there for... Is university so different? You’re moving to a new place with a different (24/7, hedonistic, possibly intellectual, certainly new) culture. New diet, new people and you’ll often be out of your comfort zone. What about sharing your faith? You have three or four years to live a life of love
one,” prayed Jesus (John 17:15). If you’re going to uni this year, choose to engage in the adventure... and this isn’t just for extraverts. He came to bring us life to the full (John 10:10)! Whatever gifts you have within you, use them. Try things you’ve never tried before. Invest in deep friendships with those who know Jesus and those who don’t. You will be surrounded by people who are hungry for spirituality, for purpose, asking deep questions about who they are and what their life is about. This is your chance not only to challenge, deepen and mature your understanding of what it means to be a Christian, but to invite
University is a unique adventure alongside your new neighbours. Who will you find to stand alongside you in sharing your faith? Is it part of why you are there? University is a unique adventure. You could choose to find a safe patch, keep your head down and push through until the end. I am confident, though, that this is not God’s plan: “My prayer is not that you take them out of the world, but that you protect them from the evil
others into that journey too. Churches are hungry for young, passionate men and women to be creative, to be imaginative, to lead. They will also provide the support and mentorship you need to make the most of life at university. You will have long summers to adventure abroad but during term time you are still wrapped up in a landscape of mission, discovery, leadership and relationship.
Fusion will help you find a church to back you and other Christian students to stand alongside you. Register with Student Linkup and we’ll introduce you to both of those! The university environment is unique. It provides an opportunity to stretch yourself, love others and set an example to the church of what it looks like to live well amongst those who don’t yet know Jesus. Choose adventure, choose seeking God, choose to allow him to broaden your
experience and deepen your faith. If you’re going to university this year, prepare yourself for a challenge, an adventure. Don’t put off thinking about it until you’re there. Start praying now for what lies ahead, prepare yourself as you would for a gap year adventure and step up into the great plans God has for you at university. My prayer for you is this: “May the God of hope fill you with joy and peace as you trust in him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” - Romans 15:13.

I AM MORE CONVINCED THAN EVER THAT THE LOCAL CHURCH IS BEST POSITIONED TO BE THE MOST ENERGETIC BRINGER OF THE HOPE OF CHRIST TO A DIRECTIONLESS STUDENT GENERATION Over the next 25 years, one billion students will go through the world’s universities and colleges.
gather together during such a formative time. University is the greenhouse for the movers and shakers of tomorrow. Students from every nation, studying in every nation will become world leaders, church leaders, business leaders, teachers, doctors, scientists, lawyers, entrepreneurs, inventors, philanthropists, politicians, producers, authors, actors, artists, musicians and more. They will shape the future and shake the culture.
For a period of their lives the brightest and most creative minds on the planet
The big question for local churches all over the world is this:
HOW CAN WE BLESS THE STUDENTS WHO STUDY NEAR US? The church has an opportunity to engage every student with the gospel of Jesus Christ, the eternal hope of the world. We
should see students as gospel carriers who will take the message of Jesus with them as they blaze a trail throughout their lives across the globe. Generally students spend three or four years at university - this is the same amount of time as Jesus spent with his disciples. It is enough time to disciple people! Let’s not be fooled into thinking that we can’t work with students because they aren’t permanently in our location.
THE TIME HAS COME FOR THE VISION
TO GET MUCH BIGGER.
Fusion has been challenging churches in the UK with this message for 15 years. We have helped thousands upon thousands of young people plug into a local church. We have helped hundreds of churches to engage with students. We have launched www.studentlinkup.org on a global platform allowing any church to register themselves, anywhere in the world. Students anywhere in the world will be able to connect to those local churches through the website and a mobile app.
Please join us on this new venture, by praying, supporting us financially (see page 55) and connecting churches you know. If you are connected to a church somewhere else in the world, please ask them to register so they can be found by students who are studying near them.
At Fusion, we believe that this represents a seismic shift in student mission globally and we are waiting with excitement to see how our Heavenly Father will use it for his glory.

DISCIPLESHIP IS MISSION: MISSION IS DISCIPLESHIP Hannah Bowring wonders what mission and discipleship would look like if we considered them to be the same thing. “[And I pray] that the participation in and sharing of your faith may produce and promote full recognition and appreciation and understanding and precise knowledge of every good [thing] that is ours in [our identification with] Christ Jesus [and unto His glory].” Philemon 1:6 Amplified Version We know that running the race of faith is all about discipleship. We are all disciples (students, learners, followers) of Jesus Christ, seeking to grow more and more Christ-like. We also know we can’t do this alone. Our connection to our family of fellow believers is crucial for our discipleship journey. We need others to teach us what they have learnt of Jesus; we need challenging, refining, encouraging and loving into the child of God we were created to be. But with all our programmes and techniques for effective discipleship, how often does sharing our faith in Jesus feature? How would our discipleship change if we believed that a key ingredient to maturing in faith was through sharing our faith? What if
understanding more of Jesus came as a product of sharing him and generously loving others? If ‘discipleship’ is our umbrella term for helping people discover and follow Jesus, then ‘mission’ is always a vital presence under this umbrella. ‘Mission’ is the term we use when, as disciples of Jesus, we are loving and building relationship with people who are yet to give their lives to him. In this we are seeking to ‘make DISCIPLES’ just as Jesus commanded in his ‘Great ComMISSION’! So, maybe mission and discipleship are more intertwined than we thought. What if discipleship was mission and mission was discipleship? How did Jesus disciple? He took the disciples on a journey and showed them how to engage with the world and point people to God. They learnt as they went, took risks and experienced God with them even when they weren’t physically with Jesus. But even the calling of the very first disciples was
Wearealldisciples 26
STUDENTWORK ‘Howoftendoessharing ourfaithinJesusfeature inourdiscipleship?’ mission. Jesus didn’t start discipling young men who already believed he was their saviour, helping them grow their gifts and work out their calling, like so much of our discipleship. He walked alongside a bunch of unrefined individuals who had differing opinions of Jesus and were at a variety of faith-stages. If we are called to make disciples of Jesus, regardless of where they are at on their faith journey, the scope for discipleship is blown wide open. Rather than just aiming to link up our Christian students who join the church with a ‘more mature’ Christian to encourage their journey with Jesus, what if it was an equal priority of ours to be meeting with students who would never set foot in our churches? What would happen to your student work if you led by example, intentionally made friends with students yet to know Jesus and invested as much time in their discipleship as in those already following Jesus? Discipleship and mission are both all about relationship. Relationship with God and others. Loving Him and so loving others. If discipleship and mission are all about relationship between God, his people, and all of humanity, then the whole thing is inseparable. Both discipleship and mission are about sharing and knowing more of Jesus with each other in community with God. What if you asked every Christian you disciple who they are sharing Jesus with? Who are they discipling who doesn’t yet know God? Are
you leading by example yourself? Suddenly our focus sharpens, and our remembrance of Jesus embodying mission and calling us to do the same is grounded in tangible action.

Here’s the thing. In the UK we have a student population of over 2.5 million, scattered around at least 90 university locations. Amongst the millions of students are thousands of Jesus-followers and hundreds of local churches all with one heart: to live a life of love that points people to the God of love himself. But we’re all hundreds of miles apart and sometimes when we look around, we think we’re the only ones on this student mission journey. Isn’t it about time we joined-up the dots and met the rest of the family? Enter: The Road Trip From September Miriam and many of her student friends from around the country, are going to embark on a two year Road Trip that will visit every university location in the United Kingdom. The goal is simple: to encourage every local church and student the van meets to love our Unis and fellow students as Jesus loves us. The camper van is a tangible symbol of the student mission movement we can all be part of. We will drive around the land, connecting city to city, praying, training leaders, sharing
We believe student mission is vital; for the sake of our society and its future leaders, for the church and its engagement with the emerging generation, and most of all for the lives of our mates right now. If meeting the orange VW, hanging out with the local churches, connecting with your friends on a night out, and praying with each other for the students of the UK, can make any difference to the cause, we are willing to go all-in for it. John Wesley was a ‘revivalist’ in Britain two hundred years ago. For fifty years he travelled around 250,000 miles on horseback around the UK encouraging the local churches and talking about Jesus with the people he met. He saw this nation changed. Yes, we have an orange camper van and a bunch of students instead, but we’re up for driving what will be around 10,000 miles to reach and connect the family of God in every university location, and we too believe change can happen.
See you on The Road Trip:

Specifically, please pray for provision of all we need to get this on the road, and check out more prayer updates on Twitter (@loveyouruni) and Facebook (facebook/loveyouruni)
Meet us on the journey: We will be visiting your student town or city, so don’t miss the chance to join us. Check out the Road Trip itinerary and drop us a line so we can have coffee and make sure you hop in the VW and connect! Invite Miriam to speak, book-in a hang-out with the VW and your housemates... we are here to serve so use us! Fuel the mission: no petrol, no Road Trip. We don’t want student
mission to be a movement bank-rolled by our parents. We believe students can live a life of generosity even on a loan, so we are asking you to set up a little standing order of a couple of quid a month, which will be used to put petrol in the VW and get The Road Trip to your campus. We are a network of young people and students who believe the world doesn’t have to be the way it is. We’re not content to tiptoe through life. We want to shout out against injustice, challenging the systems that keep people poor. We want to run towards a new world. A better world. To be love in action. Together we can be the generation that ends poverty. Together we are Collective.
Through the Key Partner programme Fusion is acting as a doorway to other ministries working with, supporting, serving and resourcing students. Our hope is that areas of specialism that have been honed and developed over many years can be much more readily accessable to students. We believe this will lead to greater joined up thinking and action that will better serve God’s purposes in this nation and the nations.

FOLLOW IN HIS
FOOT STEP S Becoming like Jesus is about the obvious things: being part of a Church community, studying the Bible and praying. They’re the basics of living as a Christian and they’re of central importance. But discipleship isn’t just faith; it’s faith and action. To act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God, they’re things we should do; act, love and walk (Micah 6v8). Jesus’ life on earth wasn’t simply about teaching in the synagogue. He was acting too. He was moving around, meeting people, and on the way showing his disciples how to love others. It’s at the heart of his teaching: “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13v35). Jesus practiced faith and action and it was difficult. He told his disciples to feed 5000 people when they were hungry, to heal people in physical pain, to sit down with those considered to be unclean in their society. Jesus didn’t just join in with prayer meetings. The majority of the Gospel accounts focus on when he went out and did practical actions, and not just in his home town but in many communities.
Discipleship means loving people we’ve never met before, because that’s what Jesus did. Follow in His footsteps and it’s going to be uncomfortable. The Christian Aid Collective is facing the uncomfortable facts. That one in eight people are hungry. That we live in a world where injustice exists and inequality is present. Poverty is a worldwide problem. What if we really act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly? It’s already a Bible verse in our hearts and heads, but what happens when we apply it to our hands, feet and voices? To act, speak up and love people across the world who we’ve never even met.
Discipleship means loving people we’ve never met before

It’s about discipline too, because we need to be prepared to change, to become people who are passionate about ending poverty. It might not be natural to think about discipline, but discipleship isn’t supposed to be easy. It’s an ongoing process where we’re striving to be more like Jesus. He taught his disciples to love one another and that message is for us too. Ending poverty is never going to be immediate. It’s also not something we can do on our own. That’s why we’re Collective. To support one another and to be a louder voice; on our own we might whisper, but together we shout. And everyone can join in because it’s love in action and we’ve all got a role to play. Follow in His footsteps. Be like Jesus. Challenge ourselves to be passionate so we can change the injustice in our world.
To be the generation that can end poverty requires our voices, hands and feet as well as our heads and hearts. That’s discipleship.
On our own we might whisper, together we shout Joanna Callender is an Intern at Christian Aid Chris Mead collective@christian-aid.org @theCAcollective christianaidcollective.org
TOGETHER WE CAN CHANGE THE STORY Did you know that you are part of a unique generation? A generation that could bring an end to abject poverty. It might seem like a sensational statement, but the facts tell a different story. In 1990, 43% of the world’s population lived in abject poverty. Today that figure is 21%. To be fair, that’s still an awful lot of people struggling to survive on less than $1.25 a day, but you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to see that if we continue in the same direction then in another 20 years abject poverty will be history. Imagine that! Imagine being part of the generation that ends the worst of poverty. Of course, it won’t just happen on its own. Edmund Burke once said that, ‘all it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.’ So what are you doing to help make history? Standing up on behalf of the poor and the oppressed is at the heart of our faith. “He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me? declares the Lord” (Jeremiah 22:16). It’s a huge responsibility, but in the global church we have a network of strategically placed individuals and churches, perfectly poised to step up to the plate. These local churches have an intimate knowledge of their communities and a burning desire to help, what they often lack is resources. For more than 60 years Compassion has been working to fill this resource gap by connecting sponsors in the West with
churches in the developing world. As a result, more than 1.4 million children are currently being given every opportunity to escape from poverty and build a strong future through Compassion’s sponsorship programme.
Imagine being part of the generation that ends the worst of poverty David’s Story David Collins is a young man who knows all about the hope that Compassion sponsorship can bring. In 2000, as he mourned the death of his father to HIV, David began to believe one of the greatest lies that poverty can tell you: ‘you don’t matter.’ Yet the local church saw potential in the eyes of this young boy.

As David’s mother struggled to raise her three sons alone, the local church, with the support of Compassion and David’s sponsor, stepped in to offer an alternative ending to his life story. David wasn’t simply given food to eat and clothes to wear, he was given an opportunity to attend school, get medical care and dream of a life outside the slums. He has gone on to university and is currently researching vaccines into some of the major diseases that continue to plague Africa: ‘My life story is a true testimony of what the Lord can do in the lives of millions of children all over the world when His people decide to be a blessing to others,’ says David.

FORMING GODLY HABITS ‘My lecturer told us that the habits we form in our early twenties are likely to last for the rest of our lives. I went and bought a new toothbrush and roll of floss!’ The scared look on Brad’s face suggested that dental hygiene was not high on his priority list. Years later, I find myself wondering if that roll of floss changed his teeth forever, or if the fear wore off and left him with the same bad habits. Unfortunately, our attitude to discipleship is often like Brad’s guilt-induced flossing: we wait for a warning sign before we start to invest time and effort into our relationship with God. Reading the Bible is hard to fit into our busy lives, and when can we stop long enough to pray or participate in a church community? Yet we shouldn’t wait for a wake-up call to get started. Sustained motivation to grow in faith comes from love, not fear, and it expands out into every part of life: our
relationships, studies, career plans and the things we are really passionate about. The Leadership Programme at CARE is a great place for graduates to grow in this pattern of discipleship as they explore a career in public leadership. Our year of training and work experience provides a challenging framework to develop godly habits whilst working in politics. It has opened doors of opportunity to over 200 graduates so far, so if you are passionate about social justice, advocacy, politics and cultural change, get in touch! TRYING OUT FAITH The other day I managed to barter down the price of a pair of boots in a store in Westfield. It was probably my most satisfying shopping experience in memory. I am now very excited to try them out. Alpha gives people an opportunity to ‘try out’ the Christian faith (hope you appreciate that tenuous link - I really just wanted to tell you about my boots!) In Matthew 28:19 we are called to make ‘disciples’ not ‘converts’ – through Alpha we get the privilege to show how discipleship impacts our lives and give our guests a taste of what discipleship might look like for them. Hannah, from London, shares: ‘At my Alpha, we eat dinner at my flat, watch the talk on the TV and then take the conversation over to the local bowling alley, where we get to chat and have a laugh at my pitiful attempts at bowling! It’s all about making friends and is a really natural and easy way to show people discipleship.’
Our dream is that guests on Alpha become helpers and then leaders of groups. Once they’ve become a leader we’d love them to get plugged into one of the new local ‘Alpha Labs’ springing up all over the country. Alpha Labs are communities of individuals dedicated to innovating, strategising and re-envisioning Alpha. Through Alpha Labs we want to inspire and disciple a new generation of leaders to contextualise Alpha in their own communities. This is our invitation for you to ‘try them out’ too. If you’d like to get involved with an Alpha Lab near you, email alphalab@alpha.org Laura Douglas-Bate works for Alpha. Laura Douglas-Bate Laura@alpha.org @studentalpha www.student.alpha.org
CHARITY FEATURE
Alison Morrison reflects on the difference MAF makes in countries without an emergency service. Before joining MAF I spent a year answering 999 calls for the police. Personally I have never called 999. Perhaps this is because I’ve never been in a real ‘emergency’. I haven’t needed to call for the help of police, fire or ambulance, and for that I am very grateful. What I began to realise, however, was that not many of the people I talked to were in emergency situations either. They had lost their dog, had a dispute over a takeaway or called the number by mistake. When a real ‘emergency’ came through it was obvious because the call taker would sit bolt upright, speak more firmly and have a look of intense concentration – this was the one that really counted. But why such a broad spectrum of calls? How can one person call because their
heating’s broken and the next because they’ve been stabbed? I think the answer lies in what 999 represents. To a call taker, 999 equates to looking at certain criteria and dangers, assessing the risks or lack thereof. To the caller, 999 equates simply to ‘help me’. ‘Help me because I’ve been beaten, I’ve locked myself out, I’ve missed my train, I’ve taken an overdose.’ When a person calls 999 they have no criteria to assess whether they have an emergency or not – they only have their perspective, their emotion, their desperation and a phone number. 999 enables you to be heard, helped and connected to another at a time when you need it most. So what if there is no 999? What if there is no phone, police or hospital within a 12-hour walk of where you are? In your moment of deepest need rather than dialling those three numbers in an instant, there’s nothing, no one and no hope
WHEN THERE IS NO 999
for at least a day’s travel. There are 55 countries in Africa. Only 17 of these have an emergency number. Nine-year-old Diana had been tending the family vegetable patch when she was badly bitten by a boar. Because she was severely bleeding from bites to her legs and chest, her father and uncle took it in turns to carry Diana from their home to the nearest airstrip and then call for medical assistance. It took over a day. MAF pilot Mike Bottrell was in the air just minutes after the emergency call came in, picking up Diana and her family. During the flight she stopped bleeding as a result of severe dehydration. This was the call that really counted, this was a real emergency. Upon landing, an ambulance transported Diana to hospital where she was stabilised before having an extensive operation two days later. Thankfully she survived. Not all of MAF’s flying is like this. We have schedules to keep to, cargo to haul and large distances to cover, but when a call comes in like this I can just imagine the pilot sitting bolt upright in his seat, eager to do the best he can for this one desperate soul.
A cry for help is not limited to culture, colour or creed – it’s just the outworking that’s different. In the UK we can pick up the phone at any time, with any need, and know we’ll be connected to someone who can help. In the developing world, things work a little differently. MAF exists to provide that vital connection when it counts be it providing food, water, healthcare or Jesus. The biggest lesson I learned working for the police? ‘Help me’ is not enough. I would speak to the same people about the same problems, offering the same solutions time after time, but, sadly, saw little change. And that’s why MAF seeks to help people both physically and spiritually. It takes time, it takes commitment and for us it takes planes but when ‘help me’ becomes ‘save me’, that’s when real transformation begins.

NEEDSINVESTORS We are called to invest our lives in the Kingdom of God. We are called to in invest generously, sacrificially and courageously. We want to invest in a generation of students who will invest their lives in the Kingdom of God.
INVESTING IN FUSION Over the next couple of years Fusion want to continue our investment in churches and students. Specifically we want to: •
Serve over 1000 UK churches in their involvement with students.
•
Visit every university city in the UK to pray and talk about Jesus.
•
Facilitate Student Linkup internationally so wherever a student studies in the world a local church is ready to welcome them.
WILL YOU INVEST? We need people who will invest both prayer and finance. In the Fusion office we jump up and down
with gratitude whenever we get a new standing order because it means so much to know that others are prepared to journey with us and share the cost. Please fill out the Standing Order Form and invest in Fusion.
THE 90 CHALLENGE This year over 40 people attempted ‘90 Challenges’ – doing something (usually a little bit crazy) to help cover the cost of 90 days of Student Linkup. 20 people went on a ‘Swaffari’ led by Miriam Swaffield - 90 waking hours spent in an animal onesie. This raised both our profile and a total of £19,112. We’d love it if you could add to this total by making a donation using the form opposite - wearing a onesie whilst donating is optional!
