Dear Visitors, It is my extreme pleasure to welcome you back to the 2021 New Mexico State Fair presented by Pattern Energy. After two years, the wait is over and we are proud to deliver this time-honored event to the citizens of our great state. The Fair feels a little more special this year, as we gather with friends and family to make happy memories that we will hold in our hearts long after the smell of turkey legs and cotton candy have dissipated. We’ve spent the last two years planning this year’s event and packing it with traditional favorites, new activities and more entertainment options than ever. Making lifelong memories with the people you love is what the fair is all about – which is why we’ve set out to welcome New Mexicans back to the 2021 New Mexico State Fair in a big way! From the cultural experiences that are distinctly New Mexico and extraordinary food options, to the outstanding lineup of rodeo and concert entertainment, there is something for everyone at the Fair. Whether you are a teacher or parent experiencing the fair as a living classroom through our School Days program, or a grandparent sharing your grandchild’s first ride on the Sky Ride, the fair brings generations together in ways that no other event can. Over two dozen spectaculars, talented local and regional entertainment, and unique interactive experiences await anxious fairgoers of all ages. We are especially excited for the return of New Mexico’s 4-H and FFA exhibitors showcasing a year’s worth of hard work and dedication at the state’s premier livestock shows with the hopes of making it to the Junior Livestock Auction, where many kids raise money to put towards their college educations. We are also proud to announce our partnership with presenting sponsor, Pattern Energy, one of the nation’s leading private renewable energy companies. The New Mexico State Fair and Pattern Energy have a shared emphasis on community involvement, education and innovation. We were energized by Pattern Energy’s intent to not only have a presence through this sponsorship, but to contribute meaningfully to the fair’s educational efforts and with an eye toward New Mexico’s bright future. This year’s theme is “Back to the Fair,” because it’s time for New Mexicans to enjoy the rewards of the collective sacrifices we’ve all made over the last 18 months. The pandemic hit New Mexicans hard, but we rose to the challenges and have come out on the other side stronger. Something we can all agree upon is that New Mexicans are resilient and that is what we are celebrating in 2021. It’s time to make memories with our friends and family, feast on fair food, and enjoy live entertainment again. It’s time to get back to life, and Back to the Fair. Yours truly,
Dan Mourning General Manager

EXPO Beefs Up Safety at Fair TSeptember, he New Mexico State Fair is not only back in but the 11-day extravaganza celebrating all things New Mexico also promises to be safer than ever. Fair executives used the pandemic-induced hiatus to improve infrastructure, increase health and safety measures, and generally enhance the visitor experience. “We were safe before, but we’re going to be even safer now,” said Dan Mourning, general manager of EXPO New Mexico and the State Fair. “As they say, necessity is the mother of invention, and the pandemic allowed us a break from our very busy event schedule to make campus-wide improvements.” Visitors to the fair, scheduled for Sept. 9-19, will see heightened attention to sanitation throughout the grounds. Contactless engagement will be practiced wherever possible. Covid-safe policies that align with current State mandates will be enforced. Here are some highlights guests can expect, from entry to exit: • Ticketing: The fair has employed paperless ticketing for the last three years and will continue to offer that option this year through the fair website and the mobile app. Just search either iTunes or Google Play stores for NM State Fair. Tickets will also be available at the gate via new ticketing kiosks located at all entrance gates. • Personal Protection Equipment (PPE): Organizers believe they’ll have at least 300,000 pieces of PPE available to attendees who need it. For example, if a State mask requirement is in place at the time of the event, fair crew will enforce it and offer free masks upon entry. • Sanitizing and washing stations: Increased numbers of sanitizing and washing stations have been placed throughout the campus.
• Maps: The State Fair mobile app will provide a map of the grounds to help visitors navigate safely from pigs to pies to play areas and provide real time event updates. •Restrooms: Restrooms will continue to be manned by State Fair staff will clean areas routinely. Photography for this story by Touchless faucets, Marble Stteet Studio. flush systems, and automatic air hand dryers were installed campus wide. • Dining: Picnic tables will be wiped down by staff so that guests can feel good about consuming their fried Oreo ice cream taco - or at least good about where they’re eating it. • Rides and games: All rides and games will also be wiped down, sprayed down, or fogged with disinfectant. Seating on rides will be spaced six feet apart (e.g., every other car) to keep riders at safe distances. • Interior spaces: Fogging equipment will be used to disinfect interiors, and high-tech, ionizing Big Ass Fans (yes, that’s really their brand name) were recently installed in the Junior Livestock Pavilion. The Beef Barn was equipped with two of these air-moving behemoths a few years ago. (See Big Ass Fan story on Page 6) “We research every day,” Mourning said. “We are making sure anything we do to disinfect is safe for animals and people.” Fair staff will have completed Covid-safe training and certification through the Department of Tourism, and will be required to take refresher courses as needed. “It’s not one and done,” Mourning said. (continued on Page 6)

Big Ass Fans Battle Viruses The New Mexico State Fair believes that to fight a deadly enemy like Covid-19, lethal weaponry is needed. So, organizers are prepared to do battle this year with some sizeable ammunition: Big Ass Fans. Big Ass Fans, which are made by a company of the same name in Louisville, Ky., are ionizing ceiling fans with industrial blades that span from 16 to 20 feet. Their Clean Air System Ion Generator kills 97 percent of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the air in 30 minutes and kills more than 99.99 percent of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the air in 60 minutes, according to the Big Ass Fans website. The SARS-CoV-2 virus causes the disease known as Covid-19. EXPO New Mexico had four of these spinning tanks installed in the Junior Livestock Pavilion in the spring. “This is the first fair in the country to have these fans,”
Mourning and his staff aren’t figuring out how to accomplish a safe event on their own. Since the pandemic shuttered large event venues, EXPO New Mexico has been collaborating with other local event venues such as Isotopes Park and the Albuquerque Convention Center, so that as residents and tourists begin their return to those facilities, they are entering public spaces that are implementing best practices for health and safety.
said Chris Perez, owner of Power Up Southwest, an
The fairgrounds do have one natural advantage. They comprise 236 acres, enabling people to spread out even in conditions, which, by a mere number count, might be considered crowded. Organizers say they can’t begin to guess how many people will attend this year, but a normal year attracts about 475,000 to 500,000 people.

The fans, which have an ionizer at the tip of every blade, come with digital monitoring functionality that enables each fan to communicate with its home base in Louisville. Ionization readings are changes in temperature or function can be detected immediately. “We’re making an all-out effort to use this technology to increase both visitor comfort and safety,” said EXPO New Mexico general manager Dan Mourning. Big Ass Fans claims virus testing on the fans has included the Equine Herpes virus, Influenza A virus, Influenza B virus, and Rhinovirus, in addition to SARS-CoV-2. The fans clean the air and efficiently cool a building by 10 to 15 degrees, using only 4 amps

Fairgrounds to the Rescue EXPO campus becomes triage site in times of community need
M ost New Mexicans think of concerts, festivals, and the State Fair when they think of EXPO New Mexico.
Though the expansive campus is given to celebrations, its 236 acres aren’t only put to use for good times. EXPO NM is also a place of public service when disaster strikes. So, when the pandemic erupted, the fairgrounds’ humanitarian side went on display. It was March 2020. What should have been a weekend filled with Monster Jam trucks, the Rio Grande Arts & Crafts Festival, and a horse show that month at EXPO NM was instead a silent and empty weekend. Covid-19 had canceled everything. “It was quite a shock, and nobody knew how long this was going to last. But immediately we understood we had to make sure we did our part,” said Dan Mourning, general manager of EXPO NM and the State Fair. From Covid-19 testing, to food and blood drives, to storage assistance, and eventually vaccinations, EXPO not only served as a pandemic response center as each new need erupted, but it also provided services free of charge to the community. Though EXPO is a state agency, it is one of a very few public entities that functions as an “enterprise fund.” This means the venue receives only a small amount of funding from the state for capital outlay improvements and must raise all revenues to support its operations. When it comes to saving lives, EXPO prefers to count heads, not pennies. Venue executives estimate EXPO served well over 100,000 people with a variety of needs from March 2020 through June 2021. The fairgrounds’ swaths of open space and large permanent structures that may go unconsidered by residents for much of the year suddenly became a highly-sought luxury in a months-long emergency. When the State Department of Health began coronavirus testing and encountered traffic-related challenges at designated sites, EXPO opened its parking lots six days a week, lining up cars on campus to keep vehicles from blocking streets.
“But it’s more than people just come out here and wait to get tested,” Mourning said. “Our staff not only developed a plan to get people in and out efficiently and tested in an efficient manner, but they also went through the lines making sure people were OK, and offering water while they waited.” When people lost jobs and needed food, EXPO answered that call, too. Simultaneous with testing, the campus held food drives in partnership with local nonprofits like Roadrunner Food Bank and MoGro mobile grocery. Organizers began lining vehicles up as early as 5 a.m., creating a parking lot labyrinth that saw as many as 2,000 cars snake through the facility for various services within a few hours daily. “Whoever knew we would ever need this many large parking lots?” said Sonya Warwick, Roadrunner Food Bank’s director of communications. “But it’s been the core of our need to open drive-through food distributions. And blood drives and testing and immunizations were happening that way, too.” Roadrunner serves as a distribution hub for 16 counties, pushing food out to hundreds of locations statewide, including food pantries, health care sites, school partners, senior centers, soup kitchens, shelters, and group homes. But when the pandemic took hold, many of the Albuquerque-based nonprofit’s partners in communities throughout the state had to reduce capacity or were forced to close due to safety precautions. The result was a gap of services that Roadrunner leapt to fill with pop-up drive-through distribution centers in a range of counties and with expanded service in Albuquerque. EXPO NM reached out to Roadrunner in the throes of the pandemic to see how it could help. Roadrunner began using EXPO NM’s parking lots for weekly drive-through food distribution in November 2020. It was still actively doing so as of August, though the average number of households served weekly had dropped from a high of about 1,000 at the end of 2020 to about 600. As of August 3, Warwick said Roadrunner had distributed 1.17 million pounds of food from EXPO NM lots. That equates to 971,412 meals, serving 30,435 unique households, or 94,349 people. “We are very grateful that space has

been made available to us,” Warwick said. “Without that phone call (offering help), we would have probably had to get very creative.” Warwick said EXPO NM made its digital billboards available to Roadrunner so it could advertise details about food distribution at the site. In addition, EXPO’s empty buildings became medical outposts with private nursing stations set up six feet apart to conduct monthly blood drives in partnership with Vitalant; EXPO transformed its Creative Arts Building from a location known for quilt displays and food contests to a storage facility for Personal Protective Equipment, such as hand sanitizers and masks; the Junior Livestock Pavilion, formerly known as the Dairy Barn, became a disinfection site for frontline workers; and when the state received the Covid-19 vaccine, the grounds became the first mass vaccination site in New Mexico. “This was just an extension of what we do anyway,” Mourning said. “We just adapted and pivoted to a Covid-19 response center.” EXPO NM serves as an emergency evacuation point, collaborating with the Red Cross and the NM Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management as needed. If snow forces road closures,
the grounds may serve as a place for people to pull off, get out of their cars, and rest. “We have a full-service restaurant and facilities at the Downs (Racetrack and Casino),” Mourning said, adding that the site could also keep people overnight if circumstances required it. It’s not just people who get cared for in emergencies but animals as well. When a truck carrying more than 100 head of cattle overturned on the Big-I, the cows were taken to EXPO until another vehicle could retrieve them. The grounds also gave 150 pigs a very brief staycation, Mourning said, when police pulled over and arrested a driver who was hauling them to California. The porcine lot camped out at EXPO until they got a new driver. To ensure the New Mexico State Fair can operate this year as planned, Covid-related community support onsite will stop temporarily. But once the fair ends, EXPO intends to resume its community service as long as needed. “We’re more than just the fair and more than just an event center,” Mourning said. “EXPO NM is a place for community no matter what the occasion, cause, or need.”

State Fair Enters Historic Partnership with Inaugural Presenting Sponsor Pattern Energy Finception or the first time since the New Mexico State Fair’s in 1938, the iconic event has a presenting sponsor. Pattern Energy, one of the world’s largest renewable energy companies with major investments right here in New Mexico, entered an agreement with EXPO New Mexico for widespread presence at the fair. EXPO officials are calling the partnership a “gamechanger”.
Fairgoers can expect to see Pattern Energy’s logo and name displayed prominently throughout the grounds, as well an educational exhibit about wind energy and Pattern Energy’s billions’ worth of investment in New Mexico.
Pattern Energy executives and other construction partners on a recent visit to Western Spirit near Duran, NM.
Though Pattern Energy’s corporate headquarters are in San Francisco and it has projects spanning the globe, the company opened a corporate office in Albuquerque right before the pandemic and counts New Mexico as its single largest investment. Pattern Energy has been operating in the state since 2016, has $9.5 billion committed in wind energy projects here over the next decade, and expects to add 100 full-time employees locally by the end of the year, said Jeremy Turner, the company’s director of New Mexico project development.
of the state’s proximity to market, its vast quantity of wind, and the state’s friendly business environment.
“This is a gamechanger. It will take the fair to a different level,” said Dan Mourning, general manager of EXPO New Mexico and the State Fair. “Wind energy is becoming a huge part of New Mexico; it already is. … Pattern Energy is the future.”
“The world has changed, and we have got to as a fair and as a state change with it. Partnering with an unbelievable company like Pattern Energy that has a worldwide reputation and such incredible impact in New Mexico absolutely fits our mission,” he said, citing the partners’ shared emphasis on community involvement and education.
Pattern Energy is not only a developer but also an owner and operator of wind farms and renewable energy facilities. It has about 5,000 megawatts in renewables operating worldwide. About 10,000 additional megawatts in solar and wind projects are planned globally, with half of that pipeline slated for New Mexico. Its Western Spirit Wind project alone, which is composed of four wind farms spread over three Central New Mexico counties, will combine to be the largest wind farm in the state and employ close to 1,000 people at peak construction.

“It represents the largest single phase renewable power build in U.S. history,” Turner said. “New Mexico should take a lot of pride in that.” Pattern Energy chose to expand significantly in New Mexico because

As a relative newcomer with an intent to stay in the state long term, Turner, who has lived in New Mexico for more than 30 years, said Pattern Energy sought ways the company could establish itself as a community partner and reached out to EXPO. “We would not have just given the presenting sponsorship to anyone,” Mourning said. “We scrutinized if this was a direction we wanted to go with our fair.
Through its School Days program, the State Fair annually brings in 18,000 students from around the state to experience the big event, with emphasis on exposing children from rural areas to a variety of cultural and learning experiences. As of deadline for this story, Pattern Energy was intent on securing a working scale model of a wind turbine to include in its exhibit. “We don’t just want to have a table where we hand out (Pattern Energy) pens,” Turner said, “but to have an opportunity to have a one-on-one conversation and an interactive display showing how wind energy is made, what it will look like if this is in their community and how we maximize our engagement and positive impacts within the communities that host us.” While there is already talk of Pattern Energy’s sponsorship extending into future fairs, Mourning emphasized that “the New Mexico State Fair still belongs to the people of New Mexico. Pattern Energy’s sponsorship is a prime example of the Fair’s longstanding commitment to showcasing innovation that will benefit all New Mexicans in the future.”

Indian Village Diversifying Entertainment and Hosting New Activities
EXPO hires Gathering of Nations producers to plan the popular cultural space
Vthisisitors to the New Mexico State Fair’s Indian Village year will experience new programs and events
mixed among the familiar mainstays that have made the venue one of the fair’s most popular cultural gems. Some of the biggest “firsts” for the Village will be the addition of a second stage to host Native demonstrations more prominently; display of a Memorial Wall, where individuals can write the names of loved ones who they have lost to Covid-19; and creation of a World Indigenous Day on Sept. 16, when the public will be encouraged to wear traditional dress representative of their heritage and ethnicity, wherever in the world their family is from. These ideas and more are the innovations of Melonie Mathews and her family, who are best known as the producers behind the state’s iconic Gathering of Nations, held annually in April on the Powwow Grounds at EXPO New Mexico. This will be their first year planning Indian Village activities, having been hired when the previous planner moved out of state after the last fair in 2019. “We are residents of New Mexico, and we know a lot of the tribes and the people of the Native communities of this state,” said Mathews, who is from Santa Clara Pueblo. “We’re showcasing the fact that Native communities … live as neighbors to the rest of us. We’re all together. We’re showcasing the culture of your neighbor.” The relocation of demonstrations in pottery, Native flute making, sculpture, beadwork, and rug weaving from their usual places in booths to a more visible stage is just one example of how Mathews is drawing more attention to Native traditions. “Giving them their own stage allows them to be a focal point, to become a feature as opposed to just something happening 20

in the background,” Mathews said. “It’s an opportunity for these individuals to share bits and pieces of their culture with anyone and everyone that comes to the fair.” Greater emphasis has also been placed on diversity. For the first time, one of the three announcers in Indian Village will be a woman. And in addition to having representation from almost all of New Mexico’s 19 pueblos, its two Apache tribes, and the Navajo Nation, the Indian Village will welcome a Polynesian dance group, a Hawaiian hula group, and Aztec Pole Flyers from Mexico. “We want to put together an Indian village that is inclusive and welcoming of everybody,” Mathews said. The wide spectrum of entertainment also includes performances from Native hip-hop artists, Native reggae bands, and Navajo comedians who are all part of a night geared toward a younger audience on September 17. In a nod to the more traditional, the evening of September 18 will feature intertribal contest dancing and an opportunity for non-Natives to share their moves on the dance floor, too. All mornings will start with an opening ceremony and flag raising, a ceremonial song, and a blessing of the Indian Village. On both Sundays, Native American gospel groups will perform. “There will be different vibes every day,” Mathews said. “If people have been to the fair and never come to the Indian Village, they need to come to the Indian Village, and if they’ve been there, they need to come back and see what’s new.”

Asbury Cafe: Six Decades Delivering Ripples of Delicious Kindness
“We must have a pie. Stress cannot exist in the presence of a pie.” - playwright David Mamet, “Boston Marriage”
Tis oansayunderstatement. that Asbury Café has limited serving hours It is only open 11 days of the year, exclusively serving from its building next to the Hispanic Arts Gallery at Expo New Mexico during the New Mexico State Fair. When the fair packs up, so does Asbury. So, it’s little wonder that after missing Asbury Cafe’s 60th anniversary at the fair in 2020 due to the pandemic, many mouths are salivating for the return of the beloved eatery this September. “My mom and I went there every single year.” “I’ve gone there every year my entire life.” “We never miss it.” These are typical reactions when the Asbury Café is mentioned to a fair-going New Mexican. But the applause is not just for the hamburgers and pies; locals also appreciate the goodwill and compassion generated over the decades by this philanthropic enterprise. Homemade pie was the first specialty item served by the Asbury Café when it began serving in the Dairy Barn on the Fairgrounds in 1960. Operated solely by volunteers, it originated as an outreach of the Asbury United Methodist Church to benefit the church’s building fund. As the café prospered, the distinctive book-shaped church and facilities were constructed during the ‘60s at 10000 Candelaria Road in Albuquerque’s growing Northeast Heights. Come 1971, when construction needs had been met, the congregation decided to donate 100 percent of the café’s profits to local charities. As word spread about its good food and community outreach, all the time spent picking and processing fruit, preparing pies, planning, and operating the cafe grew to be more than the volunteers at a single church could handle. As of 2019, 10 churches were participating: seven United Methodist, two Presbyterian, and one Baptist.
Volunteers prepare pies for the State Fair
Asbury Café representative Barbara Lewis says the cafe donated $49,000 in 2019, and $50,000 in both 2018 and 2017 to local organizations such as Albuquerque Rescue Mission, The Storehouse, Meals on Wheels, The Rock at Noon Day, Good Shepherd Center, Silver Horizons, East Mountain Food Pantry, Family Promise, Rio Grande Food Project, South Albuquerque Cooperative Ministry, and Asbury UMC Breaking Bread. “In the 1970s and 80s, several charity organizations had a presence at the New Mexico State Fair and donated at least a portion of their booth profits to good causes,” Lewis said. “Today, Asbury Café is the only organization at the fair that still does. Every penny of its profit goes to helping charities that feed people.” The café is also still run completely by volunteers. More than 300 workers come from the various churches; others are from the charities that the cafe supports. Annual sales during the fair exceed 1,800 pies, Lewis said.
