DACUS LEADS NAVASOTA INTO 2018 BY MATTHEW YBARRA Examiner sports reporter

Navasota alumni and multi-sport star athlete Casey Dacus leads the Rattler charge in 2018. In spring 2018, the former Graham offensive-coordinator replaced Patrick Goodman, who is now at Trinity High School, as head coach and athletic director. Navasota is coming off a 6-5 (4-1) season in which they were co-district champions, but fell in the bi-district round of the playoffs for the second-consecutive season. Dacus is excited to return to his home town and hopes to garner some of the same success the Rattlers have had in the past. Mike Dacus, Casey’s dad, led Navasota to a football state championship appearance in 1988, where they lost to powerhouse Southlake Carroll. The elder Dacus also led Navasota to a perfect 35-0 basketball state championship in 1989-90. Since Mike Dacus’ time

CASEY DACUS

NAVASOTA ATHLETIC DIRECTOR & FOOTBALL HEAD COACH at the helm, the Rattlers had two football state championships in 2012 and 2014.

The success of Navasota will be heavily dependent on an experienced defense that returns eight starters that competed against arguably one of the toughest schedules in Navasota history. Physicality shouldn’t be an issue for Navasota’s defense, having competed in a run-heavy district 10-4A for the past two seasons. Senior defensive-tackle Tyreke Houston (103 tackles, five sacks), and defensive-end Tyrin Preston (48 tackles, four sacks) will lead the Rattlers in the trenches. The duo has proven tough to block alone and often warrant double-teams. Linebacker Ja’Vonzae Jones had a breakout season in 2017 (112 tackles, three sacks) and looks to build on that impressive season with a strong campaign in 2018. Solidifying a starting position and showing why in the first two scrimmages is defensive-end Ja’Eric Beasley. the junior is a quick powerful force on the defensive-line. Once in his graspm meeting the turf is inevitable.

Good Luck to all the athletes, coaches, parents this season. Be Safe & Win Big!

JOE FAUTH III GRIMES COUNTY JUDGE

“Our defensive guys are where our experience is right now,” explained Dacus. “We have a Iot of returning guys there that have been to war, so to speak. They know what’s coming, not coming, what to expect and these sorts of things. I expect our defense to be really good.” Dacus has handed the offensive reins to Iola transfer Zack Dyer. Replacing the 2017 quarterback, senior Jeb Malek, will be a tough task, but Dyer is up for the challenge. Dyer has a great arm, but is small in stature generally forcing his best passes to come out of the pocket. Despite a great arm, when needed his legs might be his best asset. The junior can tuck and run with the best. Knowing when to extend a play and when to throw it away and live to play another down will help Dyer and Navasota obtain its future goals. “Our first goal is to win a district championship,” said Dacus. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 From there Dacus would like to win bi-district and keep winning each week thereafter. Navasota has put together another brutal non-district schedule. “Our pre-district schedule is loaded, and we want it that way,” said Dacus. “We want to be tested before going into district and we want it to be more difficult than district and, hopefully, it ends up playing out that way.” Navasota opens against private school Bellaire Episcopal at home Friday, Aug. 31. The Rattlers will then hit the road for a pair of games, Sept. 7 at Sealy and Sept. 14 at Bryan Rudder. Non-district will conclude Sept. 21 with “First Responder’s Night,” when the Rattlers host the Madisonville Mustangs. Navasota will have three home games in District 12-4A, Sept. 28 against Furr, Oct. 12 for homecoming against Worthing and Oct. 26 for senior night against Yates. The Rattlers play at North Forest (Cowart Stadium) October 6, at Stafford October 19, and Wheatley (Barnett Stadium) November 2. Navasota’s bye week falls in the final week of the season.

SETTING A GREAT SEASON BY MATTHEW YBARRA Examiner sports reporter The 2017 Lady Rattlers finished in fourth place in a perpetually tough district. Navasota made it to the 4A playoffs, but were unable to advance past the bi-district round against Liberty Hill. Expectations are high for Navasota returning four lettermen, including a trio of seniors, Samantha Harris, Tynasia Mock and Madison Daley. Underclass letter-winner Kel’neshia Moore is expected to play a huge role. “She will have to play big in the middle,” stated Navasota Head Coach Alicia Ellis. “She has been working hard on expanding her hitting range. I hope this season she will be a dominant hitter.” Coach Ellis said that Samantha Harris is her all-around player that will get the job done, regardless of where she is placed on the court; while Madison Daley is a huge power-hitter and setter.

“We have to keep her healthy,” explained Coach Ellis. “Madison hurt her ankle at the end of last season and had to sit out.” Coach Ellis expects to go more than one-round deep in the playoffs this season, but for that to transpire some newcomers are going to have to play vital roles, like freshman Emily Ladd. “She will be a setter with beautiful hands who knows and understands the game,” stated Ellis. “She will fit right in.” Junior Desiree Calderon will play libero for the Lady Rattlers. “She can really read the hitters well,” said Ellis. Coach Ellis is excited about the strength they have in their three powerful hitters and the size Navasota is adding with a pair of six-footers in the middle. “Our non-district schedule is a little challenging,” said Ellis. “Yes, I am looking for wins, but I also want my girls to fix what we need to fix in these games, so we can be ready for district, where it

Good Luck For A Safe & Successful Season to ALL LOCAL SPORTS TEAMS!

2018 NAVASOTA VARSITY VOLLEYBALL TEAM really counts.” Finishing is the biggest key to Navasota winning a district championship. “In the past we have always had a problem with finishing,” explained Ellis. “Losing a 2-3 game that you led is bad.

We have to learn to put our opponents away early and stop giving them opportunities.” Regardless of how district plays out, Coach Ellis expects it to be a tough race with a slew of nail-biters.

2018 FALL SPORTS GUIDE

FIGHTING OWLS GEARING FOR A WIN BY MATTHEW YBARRA Examiner sports reporter ANDERSON —The 2016 realignment hit the Anderson-Shiro Owls hard and moved them up to class 3A Division II. Adjusting from 2A-II hasn’t been a smooth transition for the relatively new program. Brad Hodges took over the reins in 2017 and Anderson-Shiro fans are ready for things to turn around for the Owls after two hard fought seasons. The Owls and Coach Hodges are gearing up for the 2018 season, confident in the improvements and lessons learned. “We expect to be a vastly improved squad from the one that started nine-freshmen and seven-sophomores last season,” explained Hodges.

Cole Werner (5’11”-165lbs) will take the snaps, having won the job at starting quarterback last year in his freshman season. Hodges said the sophomore quarterback brings experience and competitiveness. Zacarrius Haynes (6’2”-175lbs) a junior running-back returns with three-years of experience. He was a first-team all-district selection last season. In the trenches, Anderson-Shiro looks to win a lot more battles. Andrew Seaback (6’3”-315lbs) and Zane Moriarty (6’3”-230) are a pair of big, physical linemen. Dustin Tagudin (6’0”-225lbs) and Bailey Alexander (6’1”-215lbs) provide much needed senior leadership. The Owls look to improve on defense, but unfortunately will have to do so without last season’s defensive

MVP, Kreese Milligan. The junior linebacker was in an automobile accident Memorial Day weekend and, hopefully, his fighting spirit will help propel great things as he cheers his team from the sidelines. Tre Hightower (6’1”-175lbs) and Rance Imhoff (6’0”-165lbs) will have to help fill the void with the absence of Milligan. “They are rangy outside linebackers, who will come up and make a big hit,” stated Hodges. Chalon Pratt (6’0”-175lbs) is credited by Hodges as seeing everything and bringing athleticism and smarts to the defensive backfield. A valuable indicator as to how the season transpires for the Owls will be the physicality and toughness of the defensive-line. Kelvin Adair (6’2”185lbs) and Shyheim Jones (6’1” 230)

are poised for breakout seasons. Chad Roebuck (5’8”-225lbs) is a gritty defensive tackle that’s not afraid to do the dirty work. The Owls district won’t be for the faint of heart. The Owls will meet the Newton Eagles, the defending 3A Div. II State Champions, on the road. District 13-3A also includes a road game against New Waverly, and home games versus Hemphill, Corrigan-Camden and Kountze. The road game with in-county rival Iola will be the highlight of the non-district schedule. Anderson-Shiro opens on the road Aug. 31 against Rosebudd Lott, followed by the home opener Sept. 7 against Leon. Non-district concludes with Brazos Christian on the road Sept. 21. The district opener will be Sept. 28 against Granger.

Proudly Supporting All Grimes County Sports! 2018 ANDERSON-SHIRO VARSITY VOLLEYBALL

2018 ANDERSON-SHIRO VARSITY VOLLEYBALL BY BARBARA BOXLEITNER Examiner sports correspondent The Anderson-Shiro High School girls volleyball team lacks the experience that some opponents have. But that hasn’t prevented the Lady Owls from being competitive during matches. “For the most part, they’ve all been close,” head coach Laura Korenek said. “We’re very young and inexperienced. They’re playing hard. We see improvements every week.” The signs of progress were evident during an Aug. 21 victory at Normangee. “It was a very slow start,” said Korenek, whose team improved to 3-8 with the win. The girls dropped the first set, then prevailed in the next three, the last two of which they were able to stay ahead.

Offense is the team’s strength. “We’re small and fast,” the coach said. “We’re trying to run a quick offense.” Returning outside hitters Raley Nienstedt and Aiden Hackenberg lead the offense. Nienstedt is a senior with three years of varsity experience, while Hackenberg is a sophomore. Sophomore middle blocker Kyndal Bohnert and junior libero Kyleigh Backhus are other returnees. Bohnert, who has been moved from middle back to left back, is “our best defender,” Korenek said. One of the newcomers is sophomore setter Abby Ross, who played on the freshman team last year. “She’s doing a great job,” the coach said. Defense has been the soft spot thus far. “Passing is definitely something we have to work on,” she said. “Consistency is our biggest thing.”

Good Luck to all the players, coaches & parents!

ANOTHER DEEP RUN EXPECTED FOR IOLA BY MATTHEW YBARRA Examiner sports reporter Iola is no stranger to post season play. They have gone multiple rounds deep in four consecutive seasons and this season looks like it will shape up to be no different. Iola Head Coach Dwayne Ross will be filling the void left behind, as a trio of greatness graduated and are taking their talents to the next level. Tyler Dykes a versatile player that was utilized in multiple positions will be at Texas Lutheran. Iola career-tackle record holder Colton Renick will attend Sul Ross State joined by fellow Bulldog Kody McKnight But the future is optimistic for Iola, boasting 10 players with starting experience returning on offense and nine on defense. Taking snaps for the Bulldogs will be senior Randy Johnson (6’0”185lbs). Johnson will have a pair of receivers with size and experience to spread the ball, senior Andrew Crenshaw (6’1”-185lbs) and junior Adam Crenshaw (6’1”-175lbs). Andrew had five receiving touchdowns last season, and Adam caught three touchdown passes and had 222-yards receiving. Expected to propel the defense is senior defensive-lineman Kaiden Halley (6’1”-240lbs), who had 77 tackles and six sacks a season ago. Preston Futrell (5’9”-175lbs) will be a leader at the linebacker position. He is coming off a season in which he recorded 88 tackles, including 14 for

a loss and three sacks. Chris Holmes returns at running-back. The senior rushed for 450-yards and five touchdowns. He also made 48 tackles on defense in 2017. Iola hosts Somerville in the season-opener Aug. 31. The Bulldogs are on the road Sept. 7 against Normangee, before returning home to host in-county rival Anderson-Shiro. Non-district play concludes with a pair of road games, Sept. 21 at Milano and Sept. 28 at Burton. After losing four of their first five games in a potent non-district schedule in 2017, Iola steamrolled for a district championship. The Bulldogs then unleashed a pair of huge wins in the first two rounds of the playoffs, 51-0 over Mt. Enterprise and 50-0 over Maud. Tenaha the 2017 2A State runner-up knocked Iola out of the playoffs with a 35-14 win. A tough 2018 District 13-2A schedule gets underway Oct. 12, as the Bulldogs host Granger. Iola travels Oct. 19 to Chilton. Powerhouse Bremond will be in town Nov. 2, and district play wraps-up Nov. 9 at Bartlett.
