Let Freedom Ring! And just like that, Spring has been ushered out and Summertime is here. We came close to 100 degrees in June, but Mother Nature just teased us. I can’t think of any other June that I’ve been in Texas that we haven’t had a string of 100-degree days. That’s fine with me. We’re just now coming off our Western Days celebration in Elgin, and what a time it was. We’re hitting the road running with tons of things to do this summer, starting with the big Red, White & Blue Patriotic Festival in Bastrop on Saturday, June 29 at Fisherman’s Park in Bastrop. Activities include a fun run, car show, eating Jim Beaver contests, games, crafts and more… Publisher well, too much for this column. On Friday, July 3rd, the City of Elgin will host its annual Chalk It Up! Children’s Sidewalk Art Contest. This is a must-do event for the family. With just a breather of about two weeks, saddle up for a bronc-bustin’ good time as the Elgin Rodeo celebrates its 50th year on July 12 & 13. Of course, there’s lot of activities and some great music. Coming off the bootheels of the Elgin Rodeo is the biggest event in McDade all year, the 71st Annual McDade Watermelon Festival. Sink your teeth into some mouth-watering melons and enjoy a parade, car show, music and more. Two weeks later, July 31 through August 3 is the 72nd Bastrop Homecoming & Rodeo at Mayfest Hill Park. Festivities include three big nights of live entertainment, rodeo, carnival, vendors, exhibits, games and more. A grand parade kicks off the final day at 10 a.m. Following the parade will be some class reunions and sports recognitions. Both Elgin and Bastrop rodeos are CPRA-sanctioned events, so attend both if you can! As you can see, there’s much to do over the next three months. Read about most of it in this issue. For more, be sure to visit the Chamber of Commerce in Bastrop, Elgin and Smithville for more local events and information.

Visit McDade for historic Watermelon Festival BY DOCK JACKSON
One of the summer’s most anticipated festivals is the McDade Watermelon Festival. The event was created in 1948 as a response to several things that were happening in the small rural community. The war had ended, soldiers were returning home and the local school had been destroyed by a fire. Members of the community wanted to purchase chairs for the local students who were meeting in temporary locations while the new school was under construction. Since money was in short supply, the local PTA entered a contest which featured a $1,000 prize. From this effort, the community created the festival. Although they didn’t win the contest, they received an honorable mention prize of $500. After this uniting

The festivities kick off on Friday, July 12 with a street Dance from 8 p.m. to midnight, but Saturday, July 13 is the big day. Events on Saturday include a grand parade, a car show, food, games, tournaments, music, rekindling old friendships and more. But after all, it is the Watermelon Festival, and a live auction is the big draw at the event along with a seed-spitting contest. This year’s event is especially significant for the community, as it is the first time in 79 years that a class has graduated from McDade High School. Come on out and step back in time as you visit the quaint rural community of McDade; enjoy some of their prize-winning watermelons and experience true hospitality. For more information, visit their website at www.mcdadetexas.com or email info@mcdadetexas.com.

The oldest special event in Bastrop County kicks off on July 31st for four days of fun for the whole family with a CPRA Rodeo, carnival, tournaments, sports and class reunions, dances and the biggest and grandest parade in the county. of the Shriners, who entertain the throng of onlookers with clowns, motorized bikes and cars and antics that bring a smile to the faces of many. Additional entries feature many local and out-of-town floats. There is something for everyone at this festival. Homecoming started out as a way of bringing people into town to shop and boost the local economy. It was called Trade Days and was a boom to the struggling downtown merchants at the time.
