ou’ve heard of “sleepy little towns,” well that is not Taylor. Since its creation as Taylorsville in 1876, Taylor has been alive with commerce and trade fueled by a strong sense of community. Renamed Taylor in 1892, the town did settle down a bit in the mid-20th Century but that is over now! Its revitalization is the result of good leadership and forward thinking. It began a few years ago symbolized by the remodel and restoration of the McCrory and Timmerman buildings at the corner of Second and Main at the hands of talented entrepreneurs. Taylor is on the cusp of a new heyday. Stay an hour or a lifetime and enjoy what it means to be Taylor Made!s of ready land and a low cost of living – experience “Taylor Made Texas!”

5) TAKE YOUR PHOTO WITH A LEGEND Smile and be glad you aren’t a bull when you snuggle up to Rodeo and Wild West Show legend, Bill Pickett’s statue is on the northwest corner of Third and Main Streets. He toured the world in Wild West shows and has been inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame.

6) LEARN ABOUT TEXAS’ YOUNGEST GOVERNOR Hear the story of Gov. Dan Moody’s passion for justice and learn about his family and the Taylor community that helped shape his legacy as Texas’ youngest governor. Our Main Street Car Show at the end of October brings hundreds of cars downtown for an event with live music, street vendors and, of course, automobiles. If you really enjoy cars, a G21 car show is held 8-11 a.m. on the fourth Sunday in the parking lot at 3100 N. Main St.

16) SPLISH & SPLASH Taylor offers you three chances to get wet in the heat of summer. Splash pads in Downtown’s Heritage Square, 400 N. Main, and at Fannie Robinson Park, 206 S. Dolan. 17) EXPO CENTER Williamson County Expo Center rests is the home the Annual Taylor Rodeo (www.taylorrodeo.com) in July which celebrates the “Life of the Cowboy.” The facility is a central location for a variety of shopping, sporting, spectator, and recreational events. Find out what’s going on there by visiting www.wilcoexpo.com

18) WATCH THE BIRDS Cattle Egrets, White-faced Ibis, Black-bellied Whistling Ducks, Little Blue Heron, Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, White Ibis, a variety of geese and Pekin, Mallard and Muskovy ducks are just some of the birds can be found in Murphy Park. If you are looking for the impressive cattle egret rookery, you want to be here about sunset in the summer. We encourage you not to feed the ducks but if you do, please feed them corn, duck pellets, lettuce or other greens (small pieces), thawed frozen peas or seeds. Bread is unhealthy for them and may cause them permanent disfigurement.

19) WALK IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF A MAN OF THE YEAR In the 1930s, Dr. James Lee Dickey helped stop a typhoid epidemic. Through his work with community leaders, Dr. Dickey helped supply clean drinking water to underprivileged citizens, developed recreational facilities for the youth of Taylor and petitioned the City for greater sanitation and a footbridge for children to cross safely to school. In 1953, during a time of racial segregation, Dr. Dickey was honored as Taylor’s Citizen of the Year for his accomplishments.

20) SMOKE SOME MEAT One thing you’ll learn about Taylor is that having three premier barbecue establishments means our standards are high. And they are on display at least two times a year: in June’s Taylor International Barbeque Cookoff and in September’s SPJST Barbecue Cookoff. TIBC is held in Murphy Park and the SPJST’s is at 5025 FM 619. Both invite the public to peruse the grounds during the cookoff and stay for the awards ceremonies.
