RESUMÉ
WELCOME Hi, I’m Matt! For those of you who don’t know me, I am pursuing my masters degree in Visual Editing & Management at the Missouri School of Journalism. I currently work for the Columbia Missourian as an assistant director of photography and as the primary archivist. I will let my resume address how I brand and advertise myself. Personally, what it doesn’t show is how much of a Texan I am. Austin is my home and I love it, but I also love Waco, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Tyler, Waxahachie, West (yea kolaches) and almost every other Texas city or town. I wear my boots religiously, my hat and bolo tie in most formal scenarios and do enjoy a good Shiner Bock or Saint Arnolds from time to time.
1
Photography, design, editing and digital curation are my passions and really what I have been training myself for since I was in sixth grade. After over a decade of building the knowledge, with plenty of experience thrown in the mix, I now look forward to the next chapter and to see where my skills and abilities take me, and to show people what I can do with them.

PHOTOGRAPHY Photography is where it all began for me. In this portfolio, you will see a wide variety of styles that encompass my photojournalism skillset. Ranging from the emotional impact of spot news to the heated energy of sports action, I have constructed a diverse and complex background of photographic skills.
2
This portfolio will also present more direct perspectives of photography, including studio, lighting and visual storytelling categories that help understand what I enjoy about the medium and about quality technique. Through my time at the Baylor Lariat newspaper, I had the opportunity to gain the unique perspectives of a photographer, Photo Editor and Multimedia Producer all at once. My photography portfolio includes many award-winning pictures nationally recognized by the Associated Collegiate Press, Columbia Scholastic Press Association and many other groups.

THE FORGING OF THE ONE RING ABOUT THIS
SECTION
Photojournalism doesn’t always involve on-the-spot work. This section contains examples of studio, portrait and longer form pieces that demonstrate visual technique and conceptualization rather than portraying the timeliness of direct news coverage. Lighting techniques are key here in order to give the photograph specific meaning. “In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged in secret, a master ring, to control all others. And into this ring he poured all his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life. One ring to rule them all.” – Lord of the Rings

Artistic athletes do more than simply entertain the public. They offer a presence of expression and self-individualism that demonstrates their uniqueness in their surroundings. This project aims to reveal how these individuals use their isolated form of expression to illustrate their sense of self-passion by focusing on the form and technique as an expression of their athletic abilities.

GRAPHIC & WEB DESIGN To me, nothing stimulates the brain more than creating a visually compelling product without any instructions. Graphic design allows me to do just that, whether it be through individual branding, infographic creation or even creating interactive web graphics.

QUALITY is what separates an inexperienced startup from a seasoned business. Through my custom logo designs, I strive to provide that espression of experience and professionalism that can set creative individuals apart from the masses.
Logos & Branding
BRANDING is a key aspect that many artists, journalists and photographers hold in high demand. As creative individuals in an already established market, we must find some perspective that allows us to distinguish ourselves from the crowd.

The University of Missouri was in a state of tension throughout this fall semester. Beginning with the administration’s announcement to cut graduate student healthcare benefits, unrest began to grow amongst the student body. This project seeks to venture beyond the surface coverage of Missouri’s racial tensions and delve into the broader issues both locally and from a national perspective.
In Spring 2013, the Baylor Lariat had the opportunity to introduce interactive web designs into our online website. For my part, I designed the Costopoly board below for both print and online editions. The special issue section of the site included interactive cards and an interactive game board that is displayed below. (The Special section at www. baylorlariat.com was designed and coded by David Trower)
PUBLICATION EDITING & DESIGN Photographers take the pictures. As an editor for the Columbia Missourian daily newspaper, it is my prerogative to make sure those pictures make a statement and are represented to the best of our abilities. The following doubletruck and tabloid spreads represent images that were chosen, edited and given best preference in respect to the photographer’s batch shoot and to the event itself.

Growing as a publication designer, I have been able to apply my design skills towards multiple news publications including the Columbia Missourian and The Baylor Lariat. Being able to incorporate my visual editing background with my understanding of publication layouts and formatting has helped me grow as a more well-rounded visual journalist. Most recently in my designing experience in my graduate program at the University of Missouri, I received the opportunity to design for Vox Magazine, a professional feature publication associated with the Columbia Missourian newspaper and with the Missouri Department of Journalism. Here, I was able to put my visual storytelling skills to the test by combining visual content with a more creative medium than news design that allows me to determine my own visual direction.
SPECIAL SECTION EDITING & DESIGN BAYLOR MAKES 3RD BOWL GAME IN A ROW Commemorative special section cover published in the Baylor Lariat on Dec. 3, 2012, in recognition of Baylor football’s placement in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl in San Diego, Calif. As designer and photographer, I wanted to take a unique approach in presenting not only a strong lead visual, but also one of the key players that contributed to the team’s success.

SPORTS PACKAGE EDITING & DESIGN BAYLOR BASKETBALL REACHES NEW HEIGHTS LEFT: Basketball package cover published in the Baylor Lariat on March 19, 2013. The theme was to illustrate both sides of post season for Baylor’s two basketball programs. RIGHT: Baylor women’s basketball doubletruck commemorative poster published on April 4, 2012. Instead of featuring a single player on the team or a team shot, I created a “break-through” themed design featuring Baylor’s prominent players.
SPOT NEWS EDITING & DESIGN JONATHAN BUTLER AMIDST MU PROTESTS The Columbia Missourian front page and center spread from Nov. 11, 2015. Since the design was already being based off of an overarching event package, I brainstormed with photographer Justin L. Stewart and the shift photo editor on how best to illustrate this indepth piece on Jonathan Butler. We wanted to give prominence to the event while also maintaining focus on the individual appeal of the story subject.

FRONT PAGE EDITING & DESIGN COLUMBIA MISSOURIAN COVER PACKAGES
L E F T: Cover from Oct. 2-3, 2015. R I G H T: Cover from Oct. 7, 2015.

Since the Missourian, throughout Fall 2015, was in a state of tension due to anti-racism and graduate student finance protests, I designed the covers to speack to these events. Strong dominant visuals headed up the cover in order to enhance the prominence and gravity of the package and content. Bold headers with serif sub-heads helped give understanding to the visual impact of the pages.
IMAGE EDITING & SELECTION IMAGE EDITING FOR ANOTHER DESIGNER Doubletruck from Nov. 28-29, 2014 of the Columbia Missourian. It took some time of sifting through previous games of both teams to find the right images that would support the designer’s vision for the page. I also provided technical assistance with the customization and formatting of each image to help provide the intended affect that promoted the “manufacturing“ theme.

MAGAZINE EDITING & DESIGN VOX PRESCRIPTION DRUGS & FOOD WASTE ISSUES
32
My design role with this feature was to create an overall flow to the feature that also keeps it tied together. The cover illustration carries its visual effect throughout (effect courtesy of Alex Menz) as an attempt to illustrate the effects of prescription drugs on college students. All interior graphics were my design as well.
The concept behind this feature was to illustrate the theme of food waste in Columbia, Mo. My creative direction was to show food waste by wasting food. But not simply just making a mess. Having it burst up in motion was a way to make this feature engaging.
VOX DIRTY ISSUE COVER & SPLASH PAGE What better way to illustrate all things dirty than with a chaotic, dirty cover. The majority of the feature was designed by Shy Hardiman, but the cover design, splash page and section headers were my doing. The cover was inspired by the paper mache (wet overlapping of paper) to create a grungy look.

MAGAZINE DESIGN VOX TRUE/FALSE FILM FESTIVAL
34
Although never published, this True/False feature version takes on the theme of a camper's manual. The design encorporates a tattered book look with a wooden flag and T/F cover logos throughout the feature design. A true survival guide for people looking to tackle Columbia's most famous film festival.
PROTOTYPE MAGAZINE SPENT MAGAZINE Spent Magazine is a prototype financial magazine created by myself and two other designers: Brianna Schroer and Megan Bedford. Under Brianna’s creative direction, SPENT has a clean look with organized white space, but is not afraid of large pops of color. The design reflects the millennial lifestyle from fashion to financials. SPENT’s main focus is consistency and originality. We concentrate on both photography and illustrations to keep the readers interested and coming back for more each and every month. The textual content was created and edited by Scott Germanetti, Rachel Jelinek, Abby Kass and Taylor Lower. The spreads you see here are my contribution to the overall magazine design. All photography by Matt Hellman.

THANK YOU FOR VIEWING
38
It was like a virus, photography, and I was infected swiftly. Everybody usually starts out with a portrait, but not me. My camera investment came along with a DSLR guide as well, and my first picture was a feature image. The same feature image was part of my first college critique. Visualize a squirrel standing on its hind legs nibbling on the mouthpiece of a Starbucks coffee cup in the quadrangle of a large college campus. A stand-alone feature image it was, and after mimicking that squirrel by scurrying to any event I could get my hands on, I opened my first door into the photojournalism world at the Baylor Lariat, the student newspaper of Baylor University. Looking back on all of it now, I have come a long way. As I approach the end of my graduate program, I look forward to my next opportunity, my next cup of coffee and my next photogenic squirrel. Thank you for taking the time to view the collective works of my college career. Hopefully my experiences will take me on to bigger and better things. The train ride never ends!
