In addition to her volunteer work, Kershner also enjoys meeting new people in the community, evening walks with her dog, and going to garage sales on the weekends. Kershner met her husband, Cameron Kershner in college at Sam Houston University. Cameron is from Sealy and works in town as a financial advisor at Edward Jones. “[I love] the comradery in Sealy and the small town atmosphere. Everyone knows everyone. Everyone knows my husband and I have met a lot of great people here.” she said. When Kershner competes for the Mrs. Texas title she will compete in three categories: personal interview, swimsuit, and evening gown. Kershner has realized how pageants have made her a better person. “I don’t know anything about pageants. I have found myself more involved in the community. Because of [my title] I found CASA; it really gets me involved in the community.” she said. Kershner said she loves to volunteer and being involved with everything she can be involved with. “It’s a fun experience. The things I get to do, like judging pageants, CASA, that’s what I really like it. I really do it for those other reasons and to be involved with the community.” she said. Hemi Hideout is a hidden treasure nestled in the woods of Brookshire Texas. It’s the ultimate man cave, filled with 24 cars on display along with tractors, motorcycles and all kinds of “Americano” signs and memorabilia collected by Hemi Hideout owner John Hovas. “When I was eighteen I owned a 1970 Dodge Super Bee and that’s why we made Hemi Hideout a Dodge and Plymouth venue,” he said. Hovas announced there are over 1200 signs featured in his neon palace. All of the treasures featured in the hideout are restored to their original glory. “280 of the signs are illuminated or neon. I plan on putting three times that amount [in here] before I am done,” he said proudly. Stepping into the building can give guests a blast to the past. The lavish venue also includes a 1950’s style diner, soda fountain, and state of the art kitchen. Everyone is impressed with Hemi Hideout. “Everyone from young to old, male or female, they all seem to love it here. Even though it is a car venue, it is so much more than that,” he said. The grand building can be rented out for wedding receptions, corporate retreats and events. “We’ve already had a lot of people from Sealy who have come here and had parties here. The word is getting out,” Hovas said. Monthly car events are at the Hideout, Hovas said. “They are open to the public, but the events are reservation only. People would need to call here to find out when the next car venue is,” Hovas explained. Hovas shared that if they didn’t do that, then they would have uncontrollable crowds. ROCKIN’ THE RAIL

“We usually invite three or four car clubs out and sometimes we will have one in the morning and another in the afternoon. They can draw crowds of 300 people at each time,” he proudly said. This gives the visitors of the Hemi Hideout a chance to view even more neat cars, Hovas shared. “It’s a lot of fun. There are lots of car events we have planned for the future here. There is more activity than we ever dreamed would happen,” he shared. Hovas said if you asked him, Hemi Hideout is becoming a Texas Landmark by word of mouth. “We get buses from Houston that will bring seniors out here during the week. We were on the TV show ‘Texas Bucket list.’” The Hemi Hideout building is 21,700 sq. ft. heavy timber frame which it the largest of this type of building in Texas, Hovas said. “It’s unique to see a building like this. This is a timber frame scissor arch 14
[that] is what they call this. It is kind of unusual for this part of the United States because this wood came from the Pacific Northwest,” he said. Hovas’ vision for his palace included a unique building, unlike anything anyone had seen before. “Forget all the signs and cars. The building is cool just to look at it. It is oak dowels, there is not screws, bolts or glue,” he shared. “It’s a pretty imposing building when you drive up and see this big ole barn.” “It’s impressive just to see the outside. Then people come inside and it’s fully lit up, they are just amazed,” he beamed. There is a $5 requested donation when people come tour the fabulous venue. Hovas matches all donations 100 percent and sends the money to local charities. Hemi Hideaway is located at 1172 Wilpitz Rd. in Brookshire. For more information call 713-825-2555.

Baby, Baby oh
Gather information before welcoming the newest member of your family BY HOLLY GALVAN
W
elcoming a new child into the world can be a time of great joy, but for some it comes with questions. Answers to these questions can relieve some of the unneces-
sary stress on both the mother and the child. Dr. Priti Schachel, Co-director of Competencies for Methodist Hospital OB-GYN [Obstetrics and Gynecology] residency program, believes that if families take a complete look at the issue before the baby comes, then individual issues can be avoided before becoming bigger tribulations. Schachel suggests expecting moms to ask friends or family for a referral to an OB-GYN that they are familiar with. ROCKIN’ THE RAIL
SUMMER 2017
19
“If a friend or family had a good experience, you likely will too. This may give you an idea of their bedside manner. Ask your primary care doctor if she/he can refer you to an OB-GYN,” she suggested. Another idea is to call the labor and delivery unit of a hospital that you want to deliver at and ask the nurses working there to recommend an OB-GYN. “Check with your health insurance that the OB-GYN physician and the hospital where you want to deliver are in the network which avoids out of network fees. Also, make sure that the doctor delivers at the hospital you want,” she shared. “Sometimes doctors deliver at multiple hospitals, but many times they deliver at only one.” Most healthy women will have about 15 doctor’s visits during the pregnancy and there may be more visits if the pregnancy is complicated, Schachel shared. “Plan your pregnancy as best you can. Schedule an appointment with your OB-GYN for a preconception visit—before you are pregnant. This visit is to make sure you are in the best possible condition to carry a pregnancy. This is an opportunity to get your medical conditions optimized,” Expecting moms may need to change medications that are safer before and during pregnancy. “Your doctor may want to test and immunize you for infections that could be dangerous for pregnant women or developing fetuses. You and your spouse may need to be screened for certain genetic conditions that may affect the baby,” she said. “Start taking prenatal vitamins that have the appropriate amount of folic acid for you.” Many times the medical condition may be managed with the help of a maternal fetal medicine specialist or a subspecialist, but the delivery is done by your OB-GYN. “In some hospitals, an anesthesia provider is available 24 hours a day. In other hospitals, an anesthesia provider has to be called in,” she said. There are some questions that second-time moms might want to ask 20
their doctor. “If you have had a cesarean section before and you want to try a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), ask your OB-GYN whether [they] and the hospital is agreeable. Even if the doctor agrees to VBAC, sometimes the hospital policies prevent him from doing so,” Schachel shared. Don’t be afraid to ask your doctor questions. “Ask the doctor about her/his view on being in bed during labor, use of IVs, [Intravenous Therapy] fetal monitoring, episiotomies, use of medicine to augment or induce labor. If the answers you receive are not aligned with how you want your childbirth experience to go, you will want to find another OB-GYN.” Moms should stay as active as you can during your pregnancy, Schachel stated. “Also remember that most women should not be eating for two. Pregnancy, labor and delivery are dynamic processes. Things SUMMER 2017
change from one minute to the next. Ask questions, so you understand what is happening,” she said. New moms need to remember to take care of themselves, she stressed. “Rest and sleep when you can. Drink plenty of water to help maintain milk supply. Let others help you with household chores. Don’t be afraid to ask for help,” Schachel said. “If you are having difficulty with breastfeeding after going home, ask your OB-GYN about a lactation consultant.” If you are having feelings of depression, let your doctor know, Schachel stressed. “There is help for postpartum depression.” With just a little work ahead of time, the birth of a new child can and should be a joyous occasion for the entire family. With a little planning, avoidable issues can be addressed before the baby’s birth and allow family members to shine all their attention on the mother and the child. ROCKIN’ THE RAIL

y this time of the year, those New Year’s resolutions to lose weight and get healthier have all gone by the wayside. But for those looking to recharge those resolutions and enjoy all what Mother Nature has to offer, then look no farther than San Felipe State Park.
San Felipe State Park is the best way to get some fresh air and a great workout. Ky Harkey, Director of Interpretation with Texas Parks and Wildlife said he likes to say that people who spend time in nature reap the benefits. “They are happier, smarter and healthier. That’s what all the research points to.” stated Harkey. There are significant health benefits to being in nature. “They have done interesting research to where they studied two people in a hospital healing from a surgery. One group of people had just a wall to look at and the

other people had the view of nature. The people who had the view of nature healed faster and were in less pain.” Children can especially benefit from nature. “It can help the kids be more creative and healthier, overall happier. The benefits are just endless.” Harkey explained. The San Felipe State Park is rebounding from last year’s flooding that damaged some of the nature trails at the park. SFA staff is hard at work to get people more comfortable in nature and they are deeply encouraging the community

The park trails include a nature trail, pileated trail, ironwood trail and a barred owl trail. All of which are currently open. Workout clothes and a pair of durable, lightweight all terrain boots are a must have for a great hike. Harkey reminds everyone that when venturing out to the trails; stay hydrated!.
