Interview Tell us a little bit about yourself. Hi! I’m Matt, 32 year old. I hold a bachelor degree in Architectural Engineering, Graduated in 2009. I started working in architecture from 2006. I love anything that’s related to design, from data visualisation, computer graphics, to Architecture itself. When did you become interested in Architecture? To be honest, I don’t know when. During my childhood, during the invention of “world wide web”, I fell in love with computers and programming. But as I became older, I got fascinated by car designs and industrial design. Next it was Architecture. The funny thing is when I think about it, I’m still in love with all of these things. The world of design fascinates me, no matter where it’s coming from. How do you define Architecture? That is a difficult question, in my mind I’m always struggling to come up with a definitive answer. I mean the reason that I’m pursuing Architecture is the fact that I didn’t have an answer for it. I’m constantly searching. If I ever had the answer I would probably would have stopped working in this field. The following along with the your question are just some of the questions that I still don’t have an idea to what they mean; In Architecture how do you define space? Does it exist in the real world, or at first it’s just an imagination? Can we claim that “there are many spaces within the existing space? Can we claim that “if two people with two different thoughts and behaviours stand in one room, they are in a single space? I believe that in every single space, there is an invisible creature living and justifying itself to its surroundings. This creature has the potential to become visible by translating itself to any definable space (e.g. Residential complex, sport complex, shopping mall, etc..). I describe this creature as “Architecture”. “Architecture” as a living creature, will choose the most suitable placement and form by adjusting to its surrounding. I guess what I’m trying to say is, “Architecture” already exists in every site and has the potential to become visible. Us as Architects will have to come up with a translation to interpret it in the given site. This translation needs to be done by a process, which the input is pure data that is gathered from the potentials of the site. The data may have architectural qualities such as views, relations or they can be natural quantities such as the amount of sun-light or rain. Austin 2 Matthew 2006-2014
How do you approach design? I believe design is a process. In order to have a good and solid design, specially in Architecture, you have to follow a “process”. You can’t just come up with a design with no logic. Sometimes the ugly might become beautiful if you the actual process and concept behind that thinking. In my opinion if the design doesn’t follow a process and if it’s not the result of a algorithmic thinking then it is not long lasting and it cannot full fill its needs.
Who are your favourite Architects and why? Hmmm, my favourite Architects, that’s a tough one. Well in order to answer this question, I have to categorise my favourite Architects, into two categories, those from the past, and those from the future. From the past, I would have to say Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier and Mies Van Der Rohe. I chose these three, because of the functional thinking towards Architecture. I chose Walter Gropius, because of his amazing architecture school ‘Bahaus”, where different thinking towards architecture was presented. The birth place of modern functional thinking towards architecture. From present, 3xn (Denmark), M.V.R.D.V (Netherland), Herzog & de Meuron (Switzerland) , Joshua Prince-Ramus (USA). To sum it up, my favourite Architects are ones who think about future and are visionary. Those who are willing to take risk to explore and extend the boundaries of design. Those who love to add new words and new definitions to the dictionary of design. Those who are revolutionary leaders in this field.

THE SHOAL APARTMENTS
We were first approached by a client to review the exisiting DA package for a site located in Newcastle, NSW. The scope of the project was, increase the yield of the project by increasing the size of the units, add an additional penthouse level and also redesign the outdated facade.
NORTH ELEVATION
The challenge was, we were very limited in terms of how much change we could make to the design. Another limitation was that ground level, level 1 and 25 % of level 2 was already built . Therefore, by our client’s request, we had to maintain what was already built, and we couldn’t move any structural walls. The end result was a 50 unit apartment building with a modern dynamic facade. FUTRA iAPARTMENT
Futra iApartment is located in Mascot, NSW. This eleven story, 54 unit residential tower was already designed and it already had a DA approved package. The client had this project reviewed by another architect which also lodged a section 96 package. But they were not satisfied with the outcome. Therefore, they engaged Marchese Partners to re-evaluate the design. Our brief was to optimise the unit layouts, remix the unit distribution and simplify the facade. MERU WELLNESS CENTRE
We were commissioned by Zencare to design a wellness centre for an aged care site in Ipoh City, Malaysia. Later during the design phase we were also got engaged in reviewing the exisiting master-plan for subject site. For the first part, we proposed a concept which correlates with its internal functions, and external appearance of the building actually describes the internal programs. Also, in our scheme at there is a strong empahsis on the distinction between private, public and smipublic programs which are all connected through genrous and light filled circulation spaces. The building is contained and at the same blurs the boundary between the public areas and the surrounding landscape, where this opportunity arises. The primary access creates an entry statement for the aged care village and operations as well as a clear visual marker for the community. Lifecare Masterplan
Masterplan project for Aged Care provider Life Care involving 6 major sites across Adelaide.
The project has involved an in depth analysis of the current Life Care network and concepts which can be used as reference for future models of Aged Care across all sites. For this specific project we used different approach, rather than analysing the sites as micro regions we have analysed them in relation to each other and other in-demand facilities that can benefit each and every site as a whole. This means in this analysis technique we might come a cross interesting observation which can change the important of having one particular facility in one of these site rather than others. And also we might conclude that some facilities might not be feasible for a particular sight even though it was asked by client. The main focus was the locations of medical centres, retails, community centres, age care facilities, recreation facilities and parks, within 1, 5, 10, 15 and 20 km radius of subject sites. This enabled us to have a more accurate understanding of what facilities and programs we have to accommodate in out sites. Also the data that we gathered for our sites, have made us realise that some of the programs can actually contribute and complete the surrounding programs/facilities. After this analysis, we have propose some very basic diagrams, of how each facility should be place on each site. Below are a sample diagrams which we have done for one the sites. The next phase was the actual concept design for each site.

Blacket St.
Blacket street project, was residential development located in Downer, ACT. One of our major challenges was designing a building which did not feel like apartment blocks but rather town houses. At the same time the client wanted the maximise the yield yet without compromising the quality of living. Our design consists of two main blocks with mix of 1 bed, 2 bed and 3 bedroom units. The main concept was to have an even width across the site thus giving the advantage of modular construction resulting in reduction of overall cost. Also by providing duplex or two story units giving the residents the advantage of separating the living and sleeping area in elevation, which creates the feeling that the building is bigger than what it seems.

CANBERRA OUTLET CENTRE RETAIL We were commissioned to review the existing Canberra outlet Centre. The scope was to increase the efficiency, profitability and user experience. The challenge was to meet all of the above requirement and stage the changes in such a way that it would not force the centre to be fully shut-down. After analysing the flow and circulation of the movement we realised that the size and distribution of the tenancies, long corridors without any visual stimulating characteristics were the major factors. One of the changes that we proposed was introducing a new mall breakthrough which would create a relief in circulation and optimise the flow movement of users. We also decreased the northern corridors length and introduced major retails area which by bringing major brands would act as a magnet for the outlet centre.

SEPEHRRETAIL CENTRE
Sepehr Retail Centre was one of my favourite projects. Dynamic features which made it very unique. The folds and the actual form was driven by it surrounding. The cut in upper level was made for better view towards the mountains. The raise in form on ground level was made to invite people into the building and also create a semi-open space which has the potential to be a cafe/restaurant. The main reason to this approach was because of adjacent block. The adjacent block was a major retail development with 10 times more gfa than our subject site. Instead of looking at this issue as a threat, we embraced it. Rather than competing with that retail, we would use its users as our potential customers, by making our retail programs more of a service provider rather than a specialty retail. For instance our building is the only block in that area with a permit to built a 5 story public parking in the basement. Also our ground level has a supermarket, bank, and cafe shops. Also our building is the has more circulation space than its neighbour.

Tabnak residential building was a very challenging project. The client approached us after having problem with previous architect. The issue was that he didn’t like the previous design concept, he requested on changing the architectural design of the building but not the structural elements. This made the project twice as hard. Eventually after many sketches we came up with a scheme which both us and the client liked. The main concept was to have a maximum yield without affecting the established tree. So the curve in the design reflect the existence of trees on site. Technical Datails The site is located in one the the most expensive regions in Tehran. HOTEL DARBAND
This project was commissioned to us by one of the biggest Holding and Investment groups in Iran.
For this project we teamed up with Obermeyer (German base architectural practice) to come up with two designs. One of the important things about the site was its location in Tehran. Darband is situated on the most elevated zone in Tehran with a Panoramic View to the city and also a beautiful view to the mountains. The site was near a heritage zone, which limited the building height at the southern boundary of the site. Also traffic was one of the major factors in our design, Darband is one of the few densely vegetated areas in Tehran, but ironically these vegetations and green zones are mainly located in private properties, also the ratio of public green space to residents in Darband is close to none. So our main scheme and design inspirations came right from the surrounding nature of the context. We wanted to have the lease amount of excavation and also use the topography to our benefit. We also wanted to create a certain circulation which can attract the people to come into the site rather than neglecting them. In both of our first schemes, we used the existing excavation to our benefit. Our main focus was to have the little or close to none excavation and we wanted to have the rest of the site (apart from where there was already a building, intact). Thus we reduced the impact of our form on site to zero. The concept in both scheme was to design a layered form, with different interconnected programs, these layers are the extend of the existing topography into the built area. By moving this layers horizontally we created interesting points of views toward the city and natural attraction near our site. Also by moving the layers vertically, we have managed to mimic the mountains. In both schemes, we introduced the traditional Bazaar, which will boost the profit for the site’s stakeholders.

Si-o-Seh Pol (The Bridge of 33 Arches) - Isfahan, Iran
SAMAN BUILDING
Saman building was commissioned to Hootanpei by Saman Bank, for their housing development project. The brief was to design a 200 unit apartment building which had to look unique and different from the traditional residential designs and also do not feel dense nor populated. To address the uniqueness we came up with a unique facade which resembled Sio-Seh Pol (The Bridge of 33 Arches). An iconic/historic bridge located in isfahan, which everyone can relate to. In order accommodate 200 units in one building we proposed a cross-shape layout plan. This enabled us to divide the site into four separate private courtyards which made the building feel not that dense.

This a 250 m2 interior renovation project which was a conversion of residential unit to private office for Mr. Salehi. In this project I was responsible for the design, 3d presentation, and also the construction delivery of the project. Mr. Salehi’s most concern was to make the office looking as luxurious as possible within a certain limitation which was using MDF as our main material. SADEGHIEH FACADE Hootanpei was invited to a design competition for a facade of a retail building located in one the busiest commercial district in west of Tehran. For this project we designed two schemes, which our first alternative won the 1st prize, and the second won 3rd.
In both of our schemes we didn’t design according to the brief, we actually modified the plans without altering the structural system of the building. We simplified to circulation and also increased the number of retail units in the building. The client was so happy with our approach that he considered our recommendation. The chosen concept was the peace ribbon, a symbol which is well noticeable from distance. Even from ground. MELLI COMPETITION
I was part of a team that participated in an International Competition, which won the 4th prize. The subject site with an area of about 21,000 m2 was located near a domestic airport. The land use was for commercial, official & residential buildings. Our main goal in this project was to create an spectator theme which makes the landing and departure of planes the event of the site. Also another focus was to create a public domain for that particular area, and create a landmark that does not echo the usual approach to building design.

KOLAHI TOWER
This project was a competition for a residential tower. The site was near a lake. The brief was to provide retail space on ground level, 1 bed units one lower levels, 2 bed units in mid levels and 3 bed units on upper levels. Our approach was a bit different, we though of a tower as a dead-end, also the location of the site was unique because there was no high-rise building in the region, therefore the no one from that region had experience the city from a higher horizon. We proposed a VERTICAL STREET, which has the retail in middle section of our tower, thus enabling the public audience to experience something that they had never had. Also by creating that unique void we also managed to create a loop which addressed the dead-end problem in towers. The plan layout of the residential units were arranged in 8 different types with variety of sizes . According to the modulation philosophy. In this concept in addition to easy construction, the nature of there design is that all of the units have both the direct sun- light of south and also the daylight of the north. Another benefit of this approach is the fact that we have eliminated corridors in every other levels, which mean more yield to be sold.

ARCH-3 research
This research was done with collaboration of 2 other students. Our research led to creation of “Arch-3” which is a software that was made by us. Our objective was to produce a program which can assist Architects in making proper suggestion for the placement of architectural programs in the site. For putting all my effort and energy on this project, I withdrew myself from that semester, by the approval of the dean of the faculty. One of the main reasons that this project was introduced and started was that there were no researches done on the fact of computation in architecture in our university. It seems that there haven’t been any software developed in the field of architecture which could simulate and suggest the positioning of the architectural objects in the given site by using the intelligent methods which the architect can have almost a full control over the program. Unfortunately it seems that all of the CAD (Computer Aided Design) software aren’t actually aiding the user in design; they are only the drafting aided design software. We decided to publish a research paper which may help in future studies of computational development in architecture in our faculty. Creating a program, which uses fuzzy logic as its core of decision-making, for suggesting an optimal placement of architectural objects in the given site, became our goal.

I was invited by Professor Mashayekh Faridani to teach Grasshopper to graduate students of Shahid Beheshti University for one semester. In addition to this class, we held a 3 day workshop called “Design to Fabrication�. Main focus of this class was to teach students the process behind advance computational designes using grasshopper. At the end of the semester each group had to present their final project in addition to some mini-problems which they had to find solution by only using grasshopper. This class was the first class of its kind in our university.
