Men’s Basketball Coaches Joe Niland Coach Joe Niland begins his 11th season at the University of Mobile. Not a stranger to success, Niland has posted 20-plus win seasons in 10 of his 16 seasons as a head coach and recorded his first 30-win season during the 2004-05 season when he guided the Mobile Rams to a 30-6 record. He guided the Rams to back-to-back Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament titles in 2003-04 and 2004-05. In ten full seasons as head basketball coach at the University of Mobile, Niland's teams have posted a 214-117 record overall and a 109-61 mark in GCAC play. His 1999-2000 squad went 24-10, earning a trip to the NAIA National Tournament. In all, Niland has guided the Rams to five NAIA National Tournament appearances in nine seasons, two Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament championships, and back-to-back Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season cochampionships in 2003-04 and 2004-05. His 2001-02 team posted the program’s first win versus a NCAA Div. I opponent, when the Rams upset defending SWAC Champion Alabama State 65-61. Niland also serves as the Athletic Director at the University of Mobile, overseeing 13 athletics programs that constantly rate at the top of the NAIA. Before his time at Mobile, Niland led Spring Hill College to the NAIA National Tournament on two separate occasions, both in the 1993-94 season and again during 1998-99 season. During his tenure at Spring Hill, the Badgers compiled a 127-60 (.679) overall record and a 75-29 (.721) mark in the GCAC. Niland’s 127 wins are the most in SHC history. The Niland family has a history of success in athletics. His father, the late Joe Sr., coached at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY from 1947-54 and was also the Director of College Scouting for the Buffalo Braves of the NBA. Niland’s younger brother, Dave, is head basketball coach at Penn State-Behrend College in Erie, PA and his late uncle, Tom Niland, coached at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY from 1947-1972 and served as the school’s athletic director for 45 years, retiring in 1992. Also, Michigan’s head basketball coach, John Beilein, who took the University of West Virginia to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament in 2004-05, is Niland’s first cousin. Prior to coming to Mobile and taking his first head coaching job at Spring Hill College, Niland spent three seasons as an assistant at Florida Southern College where the Mocs posted a 73-20 overall record, winning two Sunshine State Conference titles and earning two NCAA Division II National Tournament berths. From 1988-90, Niland served as an assistant at the University of Tampa. The Spartans also won two Sunshine State Conference titles while twice appearing in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The 1988-89 Tampa team finished ranked No. 1 in the final regular-season poll.

UM was instrumental in providing me with appropriate surroundings, structure and faculty members that I needed to become more disciplined, preparing myself for future success. Most importantly UM planted the early seeds towards my becoming a Christ follower as a more mature adult. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities afforded me by UM athletics.”

pete for playing time. Polnett is a strong on-the-ball defender that averaged 12.3 points and 3 assists at Homewood High School. Moreaux is 5th all-time at Mobile in assists, and someone will need to step up and take the reigns.
Mobile will look to the players in the paint to lead the way with a nice mix of returning players, incoming players and versatility. "With the return of Robert Golston and Ben Healey from injury, we'll be much more solid in the post, especially with the experience Matt Turner and Sasa Lazic gained last season," Head Coach Joe Niland said. "You add Lake Charles, La. product Kevin Calloway to the group and we feel pretty good coming into the year that we will be better in post play." Golston was leading the Rams in scoring and rebounding before he got hurt just three games into the season, while Healey was starting until he went down in the eight game of the season. Michael Jones also received experience in 2008-09 and will add depth. Wingmen Brock Dockery and Treii Pace can also step in at the power forward position. "We have versatility because Brock and Treii can slide down and play the power forward slot if need be," Niland said. "Both gained experience there last season." But, for the time being, the duo will be counted on heavily on the perimeter along with junior Donte Walker and sophomore Spencer Duke. Walker was the 2007 GCAC Freshman of the Year, while Dockery had a pair of 20-point games in the 2009 GCAC Tournament. "Donte had a little bit of a sophomore slump, but we expect him to come back and play at a high level," Niland said. "Treii returns and is a great defender, while Brock Dockery gives us a big wing with great 3-point range. Spencer Duke returns after illness cut short a very good freshman campaign."
"This season hinges on guard play," Niland said. "Traditionally the GCAC has been a guard league, and last season our inexperience in the backcourt really showed in the won-loss column. We feel this year we have more depth and experience and are very excited about our talented freshman group."
Donte Walker is one of 10 returning players that gained experience in 2008-09.
Redshirt freshman Ji Kimbrough (6-1, Mobile, AL), Merlin Walker (6-0, New Orleans, LA) and Broderick Johnson (6-1, Jackson, AL) will join that group and create competition and depth on the perimeter. Kimbrough possesses special speed and athleticism, and prepped at McGillToolen, where he averaged 24 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists as a senior. Walker has a knack for making others better, as evidenced by his 7 assists per game at West Jefferson High School to go along with 20 points per contest. Even the most talented post and wing players can be hampered without someone to distribute the ball to them, and that's where the Rams' 2009-10 season hinges. "Point guard is a big question mark after losing three-year starter Derrell Moreaux," Niland said. "Freshman Lelund LeDay gained some experience in that spot after Moreaux's senior year was cut short by a knee injury." LeDay will compete with Birmingham, Ala. native Marcus Polnett for the starting spot, while Walker, Kimbrough, Duke and redshirt freshman Hunter Lee will com-

Those freshmen will need to step up, and the returning players will need to continue to grow as the Rams face a tough schedule in 2009-10. "We are playing a much more challenging non-conference this year," Niland said. "Our traditional games against AUM, Life and Faulkner will give us a good gauge of how we stack up with the best of the NAIA." Auburn-Montgomery and Life University both advanced to the NAIA National Tournament last season, while Faulkner has been to the tournament six times since 2000. Rounding out the meat of the nonconference slate are four exhibition games against NCAA I schools South Alabama, University of New Orleans, University of Louisiana Lafayette and Nicholls State. Those tough games will help the Rams prepare for an always-tough Gulf Coast Athletic Conference schedule. "It's going to be another great year in the GCAC, it'll be very balanced," Niland said. "LSU-Shreveport, Xavier and Tougaloo should be just as tough as they were last year, Spring Hill is on the upswing after reaching the conference finals, and Loyola and Belhaven both return most of their players and should be very strong."

The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference developed out of a series of meetings held over a period of almost four years. A number of private four-year schools in the Gulf Coast region with similar educational standards, enrollments, budgets, and athletic philosophies mutually felt the need for a conference. In April and May, 1981, a constitution was developed, officers were elected and the decision was made to proceed with conference competition during the 1981-82 school year. Charter officers were Anthony M. Rachal, Jr., Xavier University, president; John Burton, Spring Hill College, vice president; Mark Windham, Belhaven College, secretary-treasurer; and Thomas Howell, Louisiana College, commissioner. Charter members were Belhaven College of Jackson, Mississippi; Dillard University and Xavier University of New Orleans, Louisiana; Louisiana College of Pineville, Louisiana; Spring Hill College of Mobile, Alabama; Tougaloo College of Tougaloo, Mississippi; and William Carey College of Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

In May 2000, Louisiana College and Belhaven College withdrew while Louisiana State University - Shreveport became a member in August, 2000. Belhaven College rejoined the GCAC in 2002. The purpose of the conference is to regulate and promote all recognized activities of intercollegiate athletics sponsored by member institutions through the maintenance of high standards of honor, integrity, and fair play. 2008-09 Review all eight games before he went down." The Rams turned that nice non-conference start into a solid 3-1 start in GCAC play and sat at 11-4, 3-1 after a double-overtime win over AUM on Jan. 19th. Then, the conference slate got tougher and the Rams started getting hit with the injury bug again, as backcourt starters Derrell Moreaux and Spencer Duke went down for the season.
Brock Dockery helped spark a run to the GCAC Tournament Semifinals in 2008-09.
The 2008-09 season saw the University of Mobile men's basketball team go 16-16 overall and 6-12 in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play; that is coming from a program that has a GCAC-leading 253 wins since 1986. "Coming in, we knew we were going to have a young team so we tried to schedule a manageable non-conference slate," Niland said. "We did pick up nice wins over national tournament teams Life and AUM, and perennial power Faulkner, but started to struggle offensively as the season wore on." Post players Robert Golston and Ben Healey were knocked out for the season after games 3 and 8, respectively, and as the strength of schedule started to pick up, the losses of the two bigs hurt the Rams. "You never want to blame injuries for a sub-par season, those two post players going down hurt us," Niland said. "Golston was leading our team in scoring and rebounding when he went down, and Healey had started
"Derrell was our floor general and Spencer was having a very nice rookie campaign," Niland said. "Losing two starters in the paint and two in the backcourt is tough to overcome." Following the AUM win, Mobile scored under 60 points over the next four games to start a 1-3 skid. They then suffered a two-point doubleovertime loss to William Carey and a one-point loss to Loyola to fall to 1210, 4-7. The team went 2-5 the rest of the way to finish at 6-12 in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action heading into the conference tourney.
That set up an improbable semifinal showdown at rival Spring Hill College for the right to play LSUShreveport in the finals. At Spring Hill, the Rams struggled to a 38% effort from the field and 17% from three-point range, while the Badgers' Marcus Coleman drained five three-pointers on his way to a 20-point night. "Our guys really responded in the tournament, but we just went cold from three-point range in the semifinals," Niland said. "It was still a great learning experience with so many young players being around for that postseason run." Senior point guard Moreaux averaged 12 points per game and moved into 5th place on the all-time assists list at Mobile before suffering his season-ending injury. "Derrell meant a lot to this program and I hate that he didn't get to finish out the season," Niland said.
"We really struggled down the stretch," Niland said. "But, we did play teams tough, so we had some confidence heading into the postseason, and used the underdog card to our advantage." Freshman sharp-shooter Brock Dockery got hot in the postseason, scoring 24 points in a 78-63 win over William Carey in the opening round to send Mobile on the road versus top-seed Tougaloo. Dockery again answered the bell with a 21-point performance as the Rams knocked off the Bulldogs 66-55.
