Berry is a 1991 bachelor of arts graduate in mass communications from Oklahoma City University in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where he was a starter on the 1991 NAIA National Championship team. Ebonie Ferguson Ebonie Ferguson begins her second year as assistant coach for the University of Mobile women's basketball team after an extensive playing career at Mississippi State and two years of coaching experience at the juco and collegiate levels. Hailing from Gadsden, AL, Ferguson attended Mississippi State University from 2001-05, where she was a four-year letter winner as a guard and earned a bachelor of science in educational psychology. During her playing time at Mississippi State, Ferguson helped guide the Lady Bulldogs to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances and one WNIT Tournament appearance. Ferguson left MSU with a .351 career 3-point field goal percentage, which currently stands at 7th-best on the all-time list. She won the Most Improved Player Award in 2005, and the Lady Bulldogs collected a 72-47 overall record in her four years at the school. She also played with current WNBA stars LaToya Thomas and Tan White. After college, Ferguson took over as assistant coach at East Central Community College in Decatur, MS. There she served as coach for the 2006-07 season when the team appeared in the Regional Tournament. The coaching carousel then took Ferguson to East Texas Baptist University for the 2007-08 season, where she dealt with recruiting, on-the-floor coaching, team travel and academics. ETBU is a member of the American Southwest Conference and a NCAA Div. III affiliate. Ferguson, an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated, will serve in those same areas at Mobile.

The University of Mobile women's basketball team will look to bounce back in 2009-10 after putting up a losing record in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play for the first time since 1993-94.

and Talladega will come to town for the tournament. Among the 11 non-conference games are five games against NCAA affiliates: University of Southern Mississippi (Nov. 5, Away, 7 pm), Alabama State University (Nov. 13, Away, 6 pm), University of West Florida (Nov. 16, Away, 5 pm), University of Arkansas-Monticello (Nov. 20, Away, 7:30 pm) and Southern Arkansas University (Nov. 21, Away, 12 pm).

The Lady Rams finished 2008-09 14-18 overall and 6-12 in GCAC action. In 1993-94, the team went 15-16 overall and 5-11 in GCAC play. "The University of Mobile women's basketball team has a proud history and we expect to turn things around quickly," Head Coach Michael Berry said. Mobile does not have a lot of experience returning, with only two starters returning, and five players that saw action in 2008-09 returning. Gerica Johnson, a 5-8 guard from Theodore, Ala., and Kyiona Boulton, a 5-8 forward from Pascagoula, Miss., are the returning starters. Walker, La. native Morgan Melancon averaged 23 minutes per contest and will need to step up and replace 2008-09 NAIA All-American Danielle Goodly at the point guard spot. "We do not have a ton of experience coming back, so the few we do have need to step up in a big way," Berry said. "If Gerica picks up where she left off last year, she can be an AllAmerican, and Kyiona can give us some tough defense and rebounding if she makes strides from her freshman to sophomore year." "Everyone knows the point guard spot is crucial in basketball, and Morgan needs to fill that spot for us," Berry said. "She showed flashes last season, but was inconsistent and does not have an All-American to turn to like she did last year. She will have to step up and be a leader." The trio combined for 905 of the team's 2,227 points last season. Joining the trio are Mandy Eads and Bianca Phillips, who saw action in a combined 23 games in 2008-09. Eads is a 5-11 forward who was limited to 10 games due to injury, while Phillips is a 5-10 forward. "Mandy showed she can contribute some valuable minutes in the post, but we just need her to stay healthy," Berry said. "Hopefully, after

Gerica Johnson was a 2008-09 All-GCAC selection in her first season at Mobile.

playing as a freshman, Bianca can make strides and help us out in the paint." Six newcomers will join the five returning players to round out the 2009-10 squad. In that group are three guards and three post players. The newcomers are Alyssa Lane (5-8, G, Houston, TX), Morgan Crawford (5-6, G, Theodore, AL), Davina Jefferson (5-7, G, Miami, FL), Adrienne Mackay (5-10, F, Laurel, MS), Trenell Spears (5-9, F, New Orleans, LA) and Alice Honnery (6-2, P, New South Wales, Australia). "I think Alice and Adrienne have what it takes to be legit starters in this league," Berry said. "At 6-2, Alice offers a nice mismatch in the post, while Adrienne has experience coming from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and is a tenacious rebounder." "The other six newcomers will be looked to for valuable minutes, and we need them to improve throughout the early part of the season so they are ready to contribute in a big way when conference play starts on January 7th," Berry said. The Lady Rams will have 11 non-conference games to prepare for GCAC play. They open the year Oct. 30-31 when they host the Port City Tip-Off Classic. Martin Methodist, Xavier

"We will have some tough tests in non-conference play, and that is good," Berry said. "Arkansas-Monticello and Southern Miss are NCAA programs that combined for 41 wins last year, and we have our normal home-away series with an Auburn-Montgomery team that won 20 ball games last season. Hopefully the tough slate will prepare us for conference play." Thanksgiving week will take the Lady Rams to Spring Hill College for the SHC Thanksgiving Classic. Mobile will face Aquinas College and Davenport College, which went a combined 50-14 last season. Four of the 11 non-conference games will take place at Pharr Gym. After the Lady Rams make their way through the tough non-conference play, they will open GCAC action Jan.7 at home against Loyola University. Loyola went 16-2 in conference action last year and won the Regular Season Conference Championship. Loyola, LSUS and Xavier went a combined 44-10 in GCAC play last year and held down the top three spots in the league. William Carey finished 10-8, while the rest of the league finished below .500 in conference play. "It was a bit of a strange year in our league, with six teams finishing below .500, but I expect teams to improve and the league to be a bit more competitive," Berry said. "Obviously Loyola, LSUS and Xavier are the cream of the crop, but any team in the conference can beat you any give night, you have to show up." Spring Hill College will visit Mobile Jan. 30 at 5 pm, while the Lady Rams will visit Spring Hill to close out the regular season on Feb. 27 at 5 pm.

The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference developed out of a series of meetings held over a period of almost four years. A number of private four-year schools in the Gulf Coast region with similar educational standards, enrollments, budgets, and athletic philosophies mutually felt the need for a conference. In April and May, 1981, a constitution was developed, officers were elected and the decision was made to proceed with conference competition during the 1981-82 school year. Charter officers were Anthony M. Rachal, Jr., Xavier University, president; John Burton, Spring Hill College, vice president; Mark Windham, Belhaven College, secretary-treasurer; and Thomas Howell, Louisiana College, commissioner. Charter members were Belhaven College of Jackson, Mississippi; Dillard University and Xavier University of New Orleans, Louisiana; Louisiana College of Pineville, Louisiana; Spring Hill College of Mobile, Alabama; Tougaloo College of Tougaloo, Mississippi; and William Carey College of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. In August, 1981, the GCAC received recognition as an NAIAaffiliated conference. The University of Mobile was admitted in October, 1985; Southern University in New Orleans was granted admission in May, 1986; Loyola University was admitted in April, 1995; and Talladega College was admitted in April, 1999. In May 2000, Louisiana College and Belhaven College withdrew while Louisiana State University - Shreveport became a member in August, 2000. Belhaven College rejoined the GCAC in 2002. The purpose of the conference is to regulate and promote all recognized activities of intercollegiate athletics sponsored by member institutions through the maintenance of high standards of honor, integrity, and fair play. All member institutions agree to pursue the highest standards of ethical conduct and personal integrity in all aspects of intercollegiate athletics.

The 2008-09 season saw the University of Mobile women's basketball team start with four straight victories, before fading down the stretch to suffer the team's first losing season since 2000-01.The Lady Rams finished 14-18 with a 6-12 mark in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action. "We started the year with wins over three very good teams in AUM, Berry and Shorter and had very high expectations," Mobile Head Coach Michael Berry said. "But, then after playing okay ball the rest of non-conference play, we really struggled in conference and had a disappointing season." After the 4-0 start, the Lady Rams played their next six contests against NCAA affiliates and went 2-4 in those match ups, beating Alabama State and West Alabama, but falling to West Florida and Montevallo by single-digits.

The team then split a pair of games against SSAC foes Auburn Montgomery and Berry College before heading into conference play. "Going into the year, I knew that sixgame stretch against the NCAA teams would be rough, but we were 10 points away from going 4-2 instead of 2-4, and that could've given us a lot of momentum heading into conference play," Berry said. The Lady Rams had gone a combined 50-19 in conference play since 2005, but struggled to 6-12 despite beating SUNO and Dillard to start the GCAC schedule. Mobile won those games by a combined 30 points, but then lost the next three to start the downward spiral. "After cruising in our first two games, we lost to Belhaven and William Carey by a combined six points and I think that hurt our confidence," Berry said. "Then, two of our next three were against two of the best teams in Loyola and Xavier, and that put us in a hole that we couldn't climb out of." A seven-game skid from Feb. 7 to Feb. 26 highlighted the season's disappointment, but at least the Lady Rams took care of business against rival Spring Hill, beating the Lady Badgers 87-83 in overtime and 82-74.

Sherri McIntosh became the 9th all-time leading scorer at UM in 2008-09.

Despite the lack of team success, the Lady Rams did have some individual accomplishments. Senior point guard Danielle Goodly left her mark on the school, becoming the school's alltime steal's leader with 291, 3rd alltime in assists with 328 and the 5th all-time leading scorer with 1,386 points. Sherri McIntosh finished up

Danielle Goodly was a 2008-09 NAIA Honorable Mention All-American selection.

her Mobile career as the 9th all-time leading scorer with 940 points and 4th all-time leading rebounder with 695. Goodly was named Honorable Mention NAIA All-American, and joined newcomer Gerica Johnson as a 2009 All-GCAC selection. Johnson led the Lady Rams with 18.3 points per game, racked up 212 rebounds and led with 104 steals. Goodly averaged 17.5 points per game, led the team with 105 assists and finished with 79 steals. "It's always nice to have players awarded for their performances," Berry said. "Our seniors, Sherri, Danielle and Johnitia Williams all left a lasting impression on our program and will be missed next season."
