UMobile Administration Dr. Mark Foley has served as president of the University of Mobile since 1998 and is the third president of the university since its founding in 1961. During more than a decade of leadership, Dr. Foley has led the move to intentionally integrate faith and learning in all areas of university life, while raising academic standards, building new residence halls, establishing outstanding programs such as the Center for Performing Arts, and earning the private Christian university national rankings. His emphasis on the core values of faith, learning and leadership has extended to all operations of the university, from the classroom to the administrative offices. With these core values in place, the university is committed to graduating confident Christian men and women who have mastered the body of knowledge required by the degree they hold; who know how to think; who know what they believe and why they believe it; who possess the courage to live and work according to those beliefs; who accept responsibility as caretakers of that with which God has entrusted them; and who possess the willingness and skill to use their influence in appropriate and effective ways to change the world around them. Dr. Foley is a member of the Executive Committee of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, a past chairman of the Alabama Association of Independent Colleges and Schools, and a member of the Board of Directors of Victory Health Partners and Volunteers of America, Southeast, Inc. Previously, Dr. Foley was executive vice president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He holds a bachelor of business administration from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas; and a master of divinity and a doctor of philosophy in psychology and counseling from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He is an ordained minister, a former business owner, and has practiced as a professional counselor. His wife, Marilyn, is involved in many university activities. She holds a bachelor of science in education from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and is a former classroom educator. The Foleys have two children and two granddaughters. Their daughter, Molly, is married to Doug Sawyer, an accountant in Georgia, and they have two daughters, Avery and Abby. Their son, Rob, and his wife, Leah, reside in Colorado where he works with Christian ministries in the National Parks system.

Women’s Basketball Coaches Michael Berry begins his 4th season at the helm of the University of Mobile women’s basketball program, after taking over halfway through the 2007-08 season. Mobile is 43-36 with Berry in charge. Prior to becoming the head man, Berry served four years as an assistant, with Mobile advancing to the NAIA National Tournament in two of those seasons. Last season, the Lady Rams finished 17-12 and climbed into the NAIA Top-25 for the first time since 2007 when they appeared at No. 24 in the Jan. 11th edition of the poll. Mobile also featured one of the best defenses under Berry’s leadership last year, ranking 2nd in blocks per game, 5th in defensive rebounds, 6th in total blocks and 8th in field goal percentage defense. The team set school records for fewest points allowed in a season and total blocks. Aside from team accomplishments, five players have earned All-GCAC honors since Berry took over. Danielle Goodly was named NAIA AllAmerican in 2009 and Crystal Hutchinson was named GCAC Freshman of the Year in 2008. Players have also set six school records under Berry’s watch (single-season blocks, single-season steals, single-game scoring, single-game FG made, single-game FG att, single-game blocked shots). Berry’s 2007-08 team also ranked in the Top-20 in steals per game, defensive rebounds per game and total rebound defense. Berry’s coaching experience is lengthy. He served as head coach at Harvest Christian Academy in Pasadena, TX and Bucks County Community College in Newtown, PA. He was assistant coach at NCAA I Sam Houston State, Lon Morris College and Oklahoma City University. After leading Oklahoma City to a NAIA National Championship as a player in 1991, Berry helped coach the team to a pair of national titles in 1999 and 2000. He is a 1991 bachelor of arts graduate in mass communications from Oklahoma City and received his master of liberal arts in management/leadership from Oklahoma City in 1996. Berry is a native of North Carolina and is married to Geeta. He has two children, Mycah, 20, and Rekha, 13.

Women’s Basketball Coaches Ebonie Ferguson begins her third year as assistant coach for the University of Mobile women’s basketball team after an extensive playing career at Mississippi State and two years of coaching experience at the JUCO and collegiate levels. Hailing from Gadsden, AL, Ferguson attended Mississippi State University from 2001-05, where she was a four-year letter winner as a guard and earned a bachelor of science in educational psychology. During her playing time at Mississippi State, Ferguson helped guide the Lady Bulldogs to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances and one WNIT Tournament appearance. Ferguson left MSU with a .351 career 3-point field goal percentage, which currently stands at 7th-best on the all-time list. She won the Most Improved Player Award in 2005, and the Lady Bulldogs collected a 72-47 overall record in her four years at the school. She also played with current WNBA stars LaToya Thomas and Tan White. After college, Ferguson took over as assistant coach at East Central Community College in Decatur, MS. There she served as coach for the 2006-07 season when the team appeared in the Regional Tournament. The coaching carousel then took Ferguson to East Texas Baptist University for the 2007-08 season, where she dealt with recruiting, on-the-floor coaching, team travel and academics. ETBU is a member of the American Southwest Conference and a NCAA Div. III affiliate. Ferguson, an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated, will serve in those same areas at Mobile.

2010-11 Women’s Basketball Preview The 2010-11 season will look a lot different to fans of the University of Mobile women’s basketball team when the season begins Nov. 1 at Tougaloo College. The Lady Rams will begin their first season in the Southern States Athletic Conference, and the coaching staff worked hard to add more size, versatility and experience to the roster. “We are much bigger this year,” Head Coach Michael Berry said. “We made an effort to get bigger, and added size in the post and on the perimeter.” Adrienne Mackay and Alice Honnery return to lead the way in the post. Honnery set the school’s single-season and single-game block records last year. Joining them in the post will be 6-4 Daphnee Frieson, who comes to Mobile via Ole Miss and Stetson, 6-3 junior Jana Rastovic and 6-1 freshman Leana Tajkov and 6-0 sophomore Hillary Dedeaux. “Daphnee provides the best inside presence we’ve had the last 4 years, and her DI experience will be valuable,” Berry said. “Jana brings us
size and experience, and the ability to stretch the defense. She’s probably the best shooting post player since Rheonda Leary. Leana can do a little bit of everything at 6-1. Hillary is a sophomore that can add strength inside.” Mobile also has a solid group of wing players that can play guard or forward. Anna Maddox, who started as a freshman, will return after two years away from the game and sophomore Alyssa Lane returns after averaging 6.7 points per game last year. They will be joined by newcomers Briana Edwards, Qiana Lambert and Monet Kearse. “Briana is a high-quality freshman with a really good skill-set and basketball IQ,” Berry said. “She can make an immediate impact. Monet brings some raw athleticism and defensive skills.” The Lady Rams will have plenty of guards to complement the interior players, with newcomers Kyndra Davis, Allison Michael, Crosby Morrison and Jessica Palmer joining holdovers Morgan Melancon, Morgan Crawford, Judi Vignuelle and Kelsie
University of Mobile Lady Rams
Ruff. The three holdovers combined for over 62 minutes per game, 13 points and totaled 148 assists. “Allison is a 3-point shooter that can shoot the lights out and has solid fundamentals, while Kyndra brings some JUCO experience with quickness on the perimeter,” Berry said. Waiting for the team will be a tough schedule. “Our new conference is tougher, but we can compete,” Berry said. “We will likely be in the middle of the conference, which is about where we need to be at the start of the season.” Dotting the schedule are four NCAA Division I games against University of Southern Mississippi, Alabama State, South Alabama and Southeastern Louisiana.

UMobile Standouts Kelly Smith Kelly Smith played basketball at Mobile from 1986-89 and now owns a national strength equipment manufacturing company, Legend Fitness. They outfitted Air Force One for President Obama recently. “UM provided me with an opportunity to earn a degree and participate in intercollegiate athletics where I may have not succeeded at another institution. UM was instrumental in providing me with appropriate surroundings, structure and faculty members that I needed to become more disciplined, preparing myself for future success. Most importantly, UM planted the early seeds towards my becoming a Christ follower as a more mature adult. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities afforded me by UM athletics.”
J.C. Romero Since being drafted in the 21st round of the 1997 MLB Amateur Draft, Romero has appeared in the big leagues with the Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Boston Red Sox and, most recently, the Philadelphia Phillies. The Walnut Grove, Miss., native helped the Lady Rams to the 1993 NAIA National Tournament and a 61-33 record in her three seasons. She was named a District 30 Scholar-Athlete and NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete in 1994-95.

AďŹƒliations Since 1937, the NAIA has administered programs and championships in proper balance with the overall educational experience. In 2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the character-building aspects of sport. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official, and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five tenets: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship. The NAIA Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sport, and provide student-athletes, coaches, and parents the training to help them know the right thing, do the right thing, and value the right thing inside and outside the sports setting. Opportunities for the Student-Athlete - 48,000 participating student-athletes - Hundreds of NAIA students recognized annually as All-America Scholar-Athletes, thousands more honored on the conference level - Championship opportunities at the conference and national level - 23 championships encompassing 13 sports: (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, wrestling, softball and volleyball) - The NAIA emphasizes the importance of academics while participating in athletics - The NAIA offers the Daktronics Scholar-Athlete program recognizing junior and senior student-athletes with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale)
Aim of the SSAC - To promote the development of athletics as an integral part of the educational offerings of member institutions by means of democratic participation at the conference level. This aim shall be accomplished by means of the functioning of committees composed of representatives of those institutions which subscribe to and support athletic programs that shall culminate in truly democratic conference championship competition. The SSAC seeks membership only from accredited institutions that support this aim. The primary criteria for selection and encouragement of membership shall be educational emphasis. Goals for its SSAC Member Institutions to Achieve Its Aim * Ensure that intercollegiate athletics is an integral part of the total educational offering, under the control of those responsible for the administration of the institution. * Maintain high ethical standards through commitment to the principle of self-reporting. * Evaluate the athletics program in terms of the educational purpose of the institution. * Engage in competition with other institutions having similar athletic and academic philosophies and policies, while respecting the diversity that can exist in a conference setting and among its member institutions. Conference Name Change - The SSAC was incorporated under the name Georgia Alabama Carolina Conference, Inc. on the 16th day of March, 1999 and renamed the Southern States Athletic Conference, Inc. on the 27th day of June, 2005. All other provisions of the Articles of Incorporation for the Georgia Alabama Carolina Conference, Inc (now the Southern States Athletic Conference, Inc.) remained in effect. 2009-10 Women’s Basketball Review Florida, Arkansas-Monticello, Southern Arkansas University and Aquinas College. It also carried Mobile to a 3-1 start in GCAC play, including an upset of preseason favorite Loyola in the opener. “We were clicking on all cylinders against some tough competition,” Berry said. “We really thought the win over Loyola would lead us into a successful conference campaign.” Alice Honnery’s record-setting season was one of the highlights of 2009-10.
The University of Mobile women’s basketball team finished the 2009-10 season with a 17-12 overall record and a 9-9 mark in the team’s final season in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. Mobile started strong, building an 11-3 record and climbing into the NAIA Top-25 for the first time since 2007. The Lady Rams went 8-2 in the first ten games of the season, while Gerica Johnson averaged 25.9 points per game, but grades prevented the 2009 AllConference selection from playing the rest of the season. “It was nice to get the program back in the Top-25 where we belong,” Head Coach Michael Berry said. “Gerica was obviously a big part of the climb, but we were also doing a good job of getting different players to step up on any given night.” The hot start saw Mobile split with AUM, and go 4-1 against NCAA-II opponents, beating West 25
Instead, it went downhill after that 3-1 GCAC start. The Lady Rams lost four straight and six of the next seven conference games to fall to 4-7. The team struggled to score in the stretch, scoring under 60 points in five of those six losses.
Hill to finish a regular season sweep of the rivals. The Lady Rams then were sent to Loyola University for the GCAC Quarterfinals. The Lady Rams split with the Wolfpack in the regular season, but fell short, 48-75, in the playoffs. “We got our offense going a bit down the stretch and headed into the postseason on a nice little roll, but we just ran into a talented Loyola squad and did not get the job done,” Berry said. Honnery represented Mobile on the 2010 All-GCAC squad after setting the school single-season block record with 135.
The one victory came in the form of a 63-55 win over rival Spring Hill, when Alice Honnery recorded a triple-double of 14 points, 12 blocks and 10 rebounds, breaking the single-game blocks record at Mobile. “For whatever reason we just couldn’t score,” Berry said. “It’s very difficult to win when you are doing good to score 60 points.” After back-to-back losses to Tougaloo and Loyola, Mobile turned in a strong finish to the regular season, going 5-2 over the remaining seven games, with the lone losses coming at LSUShreveport and Xavier. Mobile capped the regular season with a 71-58 victory over Spring University of Mobile Lady Rams
Morgan Melancon and the Lady Rams went 4-1 against NCAA-II schools in 2009-10.
“Alice had a really nice first season with us,” Berry said. “She was dominant on defense and showed some flashes of being a capable scorer.”
