The 2010 University of Mobile baseball team will have a largely new look heading into the season opener Friday, Jan. 29 at Belhaven College, but that is nothing new for the Rams.
the best ever at Mobile, placing in the top three all-time in homeruns and runs scored at the school. This year, seniors Nick Laico and Brad Sheffield are the only returning players who received significant at bats.
"We recruit a lot of junior college players which means we have a lot of turnover," UM Head Coach Mike Jacobs said. "Two years ago, we had pretty much a whole new lineup, but ended up with probably the second best season in school history, and last year we had to deal with a whole new pitching staff. This year will be a bit of both."
"Obviously, when you lose so many great hitters, including a pair of All-Americans in Carlos Romero and Kevin Orso, you are going to have some uncertainty," Jacobs said. "But, we like our returning players and our new guys and feel that they can make their own mark."
Dustin Lee and Alan Butts will return to anchor the pitching staff, along with newcomers Jarrin Brister, Cameron White, John Ladnier, Jeff Lyons, Michael Clay, Eric Meeks and Chris Peacock.
Sheffield will be expected to anchor the lineup after hitting .388 with 16 extra base hits and a .461 on base percentage. Laico logged 84 at bats between catcher and DH, batting .310. Travis Williamson is a senior that will split time behind the plate and the outfield.
"We really need our returning guys to step up big," Jacobs said. "But, it's nice that most of our newcomers are juco products and already have collegiate experience." Lee did not start pitching until the last half of last season, but he put up a sparkling 1.29 ERA in 21 relief innings. Butts logged 40.1 innings as a starter and reliever. Ladnier went 6-2 with a sub-3.0 ERA last season, Clay fanned 39 in 48.2 innings of work and Lyons picked up 3 saves and 3 wins for Faulkner State. Peacock limited opponents to a .213 batting average in 40.2 innings, while White put up a 6-2 record while splitting time between the mound and the field for Holmes Community College. Brister has had a great fall for the Rams and Meeks is a sidearm relief pitcher from Bishop State. "We like the arms we brought in, but it might take some time to get everyone in the roles that will fit best," Jacobs said. The 2008 and 2009 lineups were among
Joining Sheffield on the infield will be Justin Beck, Ben Negus, Eric Perez, Cody Sanderson and Brady King. Sanderson brings some much-needed power to the lineup after slugging .797 with 12 homers at Jefferson Davis, while Negus hit .302 at Jefferson Davis. Perez, Beck and King are versatile freshman that the coaches are excited about. "Our infield has a great deal of depth," Jacobs said. "Sheffield will start at 1st base and Sanderson will start at short. Bourgeois has had a good fall and will add depth in the middle if his arm comes around. Second base will have two freshmen see time in Beck and King, while Negus, White and Lee are all showing the ability to see action at 3rd base. The only clear-cut starters are Sheffield and Sanderson." Joining Laico behind the plate is Williamson. Williamson caught in junior college in 2008, while Michael Tedesco is expected to be ready sometime in February after shoulder surgery in the summer.
The outfield will likely see some combination of Cody Barber, Jake Halverson, Hunter Norris, Eric Perez and Travis Williamson. Barber, brother of former Ram Brett Barber, will be looked upon to be a key run-producer after hitting .358 with 56 runs at Faulkner State. Norris hit .326 at Jefferson Davis. Halverson is a transfer from Dana College where he hit .307 in 137 at bats. "We don't have three clear-cut starters in the outfield, but have several guys that we feel will help us there," Jacobs said. "It's up to them to settle playing time with their on-field performance." Team Captains Sheffield and Lee will look to have the team ready quickly, as the Rams jump right into Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action with threegame series versus Belhaven and Loyola to start the year. Spring Hill, William Carey, Tougaloo and LSU-Shreveport round out the conference foes. "The GCAC will be as tough as always with William Carey and LSU-Shreveport ranked and Belhaven on the cusp of being ranked," Jacobs said. "And you can't overlook anyone, as conference games always seem to bring out everyone's best." Non-conference play will keep the team tested throughout the season with homeand-away matchups versus SSAC members Auburn-Montgomery and Faulkner and teams such as West Florida, Oklahoma Wesleyan and Lambuth University. "We like to have a solid non-conference schedule to keep us battle-tested throughout the year, and this year will be as tough as any, as we will have to show up for every game," Jacobs said.

The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference developed out of a series of meetings held over a period of almost four years. A number of private fouryear schools in the Gulf Coast region with similar educational standards, enrollments, budgets, and athletic philosophies mutually felt the need for a conference. In April and May, 1981, a constitution was developed, officers were elected and the decision was made to proceed with conference competition during the 1981-82 school year. Charter officers were Anthony M. Rachal, Jr., Xavier University, president; John Burton, Spring Hill College, vice president; Mark Windham, Belhaven College, secretary-treasurer; and Thomas Howell, Louisiana College, commissioner. Charter members were Belhaven College of Jackson, Mississippi; Dillard University and Xavier University of New Orleans, Louisiana; Louisiana College of Pineville, Louisiana; Spring Hill College of Mobile, Alabama; Tougaloo College of Tougaloo, Mississippi; and William Carey College of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. In August, 1981, the GCAC received recognition as an NAIA-affiliated conference. The University of Mobile was admitted in October, 1985; Southern University in New Orleans was granted admission in May, 1986; Loyola University was admitted in April, 1995; and Talladega College was admitted in April, 1999. In May 2000, Louisiana College and Belhaven College withdrew while Louisiana State University - Shreveport became a member in August, 2000. Belhaven College rejoined the GCAC in 2002. The purpose of the conference is to regulate and promote all recognized activities of intercollegiate athletics sponsored by member institutions through the maintenance of high standards of honor, integrity, and fair play. All member institutions agree to pursue the highest standards of ethical conduct and personal integrity in all aspects of intercollegiate athletics.

The University of Mobile baseball team entered the 2009 season with high expectations coming off a 43-win season and Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship in 2008. The Rams returned a potent lineup, but lost key contributors from the pitching staff.
game, but the Blazers tallied the winning run when Craig Westcott won a 10-pitch battle by delivering a walk-off RBI double just-over the head of Carlos Romero in centerfield. "I was proud of the way our guys battled back after the tough opening game," Jacobs said. "We were right there in it, but just fell short, and I hate that for our seniors."
"Baseball usually boils down to pitching and defense," Head Coach Mike Jacobs said. "We had a great offense, but lost too much pitching to take that next step we were hoping to take." The Rams went 34-23, and the new pitching staff struggled early. The Rams lost all three games in the opening weekend against LSUS, and that sweep sent the Rams into an early-season spiral that had the team sitting at 9-11 overall and 6-8 in GCAC play on Feb. 27. "That opening series was a wake-up call, and told us this season would not be easy," Jacobs said. "Just because you are one of the conference favorites coming into the year, doesn't mean the other schools will roll over for you, and it took awhile for our guys to get rolling." Mobile started to turn things around with a 12-4 win against Belhaven to prevent a three-game sweep on Feb. 28. From there, until April 4, the Rams went 17-5 to improve their record to 26-16. The run was bookended by a pair of five-game win streaks. The offense came to life in that stretch, scoring seven runs or more in 17 contests, including doublefigures in 10 games. The pitching staff also started to come to life, holding opponents below four runs in nine of those games. "The season was starting to get away from us, but our guys responded and got us back in the running for a conference title," Jacobs said. The Rams played just-above .500 at 6-5 the rest of the regular season, and

entered the GCAC Tournament with a 32-21 overall record and a 19-15 conference mark. The double-elimination tournament opened with a loss to Belhaven College. The game forced the Rams to use four pitchers and put the team one game away from elimination. "It was disappointing to bounce back from the early-season struggles, only to have the same thing happen in the postseason," Jacobs said. "But, we didn't panic and just took things one game at a time from there."
For their efforts, Kevin Orso was named a First-Team NAIA All-American, and Romero was named an Honorable Mention All-American. Orso hit .357 with 17 doubles, 15 homers and 59 RBI. Romero finished with a .374 average, 66 runs scored, 14 doubles, 4 triples and 15 homers for the Rams. Those 15 homers tied Romero and Orso with Josh Kendrick for Mobile's singleseason homerun record. They also finished their careers No. 1 and 2 in homers, with Romero hitting 36 and Orso hitting 27. Jared Baria finished as the career hits leader with 275, followed by Romero with 253. Romero is also the career RBI leader with 193.
UM rebounded with a 9-6 win over William Carey and an 8-5 victory over rival Spring Hill College. That set up a title contest with Belhaven College. The Blazers would need only one victory to win it all, while Mobile would have to beat Belhaven twice for the championship. Working on three days rest, Nelson Curry limited the Blazers to one run on two hits in six innings of work, that allowed the Rams to build a 2-1 lead heading into the final inning. Ace reliever Dustin Lee came on to close out the
