2010 Preview While most teams begin the season looking to qualify for nationals, the University of Mobile men’s soccer team will start 2010 with an advantage. Due to hosting the 2010 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championships along with the Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission Nov. 29 - Dec. 4 in Orange Beach, the Rams will receive a host bid to the round of 16. Instead, the Rams will focus on preparing themselves to make a run at the national tournament. “It’s a great opportunity and advantage, knowing you’re starting the season going to the round of 16,” Mobile Head Coach Peter Fuller said. “We need a quality regular season to get a good seed and the key is to be peeking at the right time.” Leading the way for Mobile will be a strong core of returning players and some talented newcomers. Jason Williams returns in goal after posting 4 shutouts last year and he will be joined in the defensive backfield by 2009 All-American Christopher Dillon,

David Maddren and Robbie Ford. “We’ve got a terrific group returning,” Fuller said. “Adding in a couple of very good defenders, we should be very solid in the back.” The Rams expect to be strong on the attack as well, with Stephen Okai patrolling the midfield and Sam Blackburn and Ruben Diaz at forward. “Okai is a great passer of the ball, and up front you have Sam Blackburn, who scored some big goals for us, and Ruben Diaz, who has 26 career goals,” Fuller said. Some of the key newcomers for Mobile are midfielder Ebenezer Amoah, forward Marc Joseph, forward Deshorn Brown and defender Marc Bowron. “With a strong returning group, the newcomers won’t have as much pressure on them, but we still need them to fill some spots, and are confident they can do that,” Fuller said.

University of Mobile

Mobile will start things off at home on Aug. 26 against Bethel College (Ind), who finished the 2009 season ranked No. 8. Mobile will also play 2009 NAIA National Tournament participants Martin Methodist, Embry-Riddle, Southern Poly, Bethel (Tenn), William Carey and UT-Brownsville. Bethel (Tenn) (1), Southern Poly (4), Bethel (Ind) (8), William Carey (9), UT-Brownsville (15), AUM (17), Embry-Riddle (18) and Belhaven (23) all finished the 2009 season in the Top-25 and dot the Rams’ schedule. That means over half of the Rams’ 17 opponents qualified for nationals or were nationally ranked last season. The 2010 season will also mark UMobile’s first year in the Southern States Athletic Conference, and that will pose a challenge. “The SSAC is one of the top 3 conferences in the country, maybe the best,” Fuller said. “There are seven top-25 teams in the same conference, it’s a very competitive league.”

2009 Review The University of Mobile men’s soccer team posted a sub-.500 record of 9-11 in 2009, but the team finished strong, winning the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship and NAIA Unaffiliated Championship to earn the program’s 13th trip to the NAIA National Championships. “Our record wasn’t where we would like it to be, obviously, but every year our goal is to win conference and have a chance to go to nationals, and we did that,” Head Coach Peter Fuller said. Mobile faced a tough schedule, with perennial powers such as Azusa Pacific, UT-Brownsville, Embry-Riddle and AUM dotting the schedule. That along with a slow start by the UM attackers equaled a rough start to the season. The Rams started the year 1-4, scoring only two goals in those contests, and went 3-6 over the first nine, with only six goals scored. “For whatever reason, our guys couldn’t put the ball in the back

of the net early on,” Fuller said. “We were creating enough opportunities to win games, but couldn’t finish.” Mobile snapped out of it briefly Oct. 11-12, beating LSU-Shreveport and Northwood University by a combined 7-5 margin, before going 1-4 to close out the regular season. They lost four straight, being outscored 7-2, before slamming rival Spring Hill 4-0 to close out the regular season. Three of those losses were one-goal setbacks to talented teams Belhaven, AUM and West Florida. “We started to fall back into our early-season bad habits, but we were playing tough teams, and that helped prep our guys for the postseason,” Fuller said. “Beating our rival 4-0 gave our guys a lot of momentum.” The Rams slipped by Belhaven 2-1 in overtime on a pair of goals from Henrique Bertoli to open the GCAC Tournament, and then stunned William Carey 4-0 to take home the title. Ruben Diaz tallied a pair of goals and one assist in the game.

“We got some guys to step up in big spots and our defense continued to do a great job,” Fuller said. Since the GCAC did not have enough men’s soccer teams to get an automatic bid to nationals, the Rams then had to battle Asbury University for the Unaffiliated Championship. Mobile took care of business there, winning 2-1 to qualify for the NAIA National Tournament. The Rams drew a trip to EmbryRiddle for the NAIA Opening Round contest. Mobile bested the Eagles 1-0 in Mobile on Sept. 19, but this time, Embry-Riddle got the win with a 2-0 decision. “Our guys were playing great throughout the postseason, but we just ran into a hot team and couldn’t finish some scoring chances,” Fuller said.” For their efforts during the season, Chris Dillon, Onesimus Ikungo and Jason Williams were named All-Conference, while Dillon was also named Honorable Mention NAIA All-American.
