Coach Campbell spends most of his time coaching and mentoring players with his wife and assistant, Amber, by his side.
Amber Campbell, who graduated from the University of the Cumberlands in 2004 with a degree in public health, joined Jon as his assistant coach for the inaugural season at University of Mobile in 2005. Her various duties indicate an involvement level usually reserved for head coaches. Campbell is actively involved in planning and coordinating practices, while she also designs and implements the weight-training program for the team. She works closely with the team’s setters during games and practices, and joins with husband and head coach Jon Campbell for game management and overseeing statisticians. Campbell adds 9 seasons of head coaching experience to this husband-and-wife duo and has committed to training life skills and developing good character in players while improving their volleyball ability. Both coaches are actively involved in promoting and improving volleyball in this region of the country through camps, lessons, and a volleyball training program designed for players who cannot play club volleyball. The Campbell’s have two children. University of Mobile Volleyball

2009 Review
The 2009 season saw the University of Mobile volleyball team advance to the NAIA National Tournament for the third consecutive season and win 25+ matches for the fourth straight year, as the team went 26-13. The team also went undefeated in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play for the first time in school history. “Each year our goal is to take care of business in conference and use that experience once we get to nationals,” Head Coach Jon Campbell said. “We continued to build toward our goal of being a National Championship contender.”
At the final site of the National Tournament, Mobile found itself in a tough pool with Cal Baptist (2), Vanguard (11) and Taylor University (16). The Lady Rams fell to Cal Baptist and Taylor, and beat Vanguard, falling short of moving on to the championship bracket.
Whitney Knight finished at Mobile as a three-time NAIA All-American.
to move into the finals against Loyola.
The season started out slow for the Lady Rams, as they faced several ranked schools and stumbled out of the gate to a 6-7 start. They picked up a nice 3-1 win over Embry-Riddle and narrowly missed against SCAD and Lubbock Christian, falling in 5 sets in each match.
The Wolfpack and Lady Rams battled in the first two sets, with Mobile taking the opener 25-22, and Loyola tying it up 25-23 in the 2nd set. But, the Lady Rams caught fire and closed it out with 25-11 and 25-15 wins in the final two sets.
“We want national recognition as a program, and we had a chance to make a big statement in that opening stretch,” Campbell said. “Unfortunately, we left some big wins on the table.”
“We began clicking down the stretch and that carried over into the conference tournament,” Campbell said. “Loyola came out strong early, but we started playing like we are capable of and dominated the last two sets.”
Following back-to-back shutout losses to Lee and West Florida, the Lady Rams began to turn the season around, going 14-4 to close out the regular season. That included nine straight-set wins, and victories over Martin Methodist, Freed-Hardeman and Campbellsville. With that streak, Mobile locked up the top seed in the GCAC Tournament. The Lady Rams carried the momentum into the tournament, rolling off three straight-set victories
“It was a tough draw, but through it all we still beat the 11th ranked team,” Campbell said. “We haven’t advanced out of pool play each of our trips to nationals, and we can use that as motivation to improve to get past that hurdle.”
That win earned the Lady Rams their third bid to the NAIA National Championships and a shot to host SCAD in a NAIA National Championship Opening Round Match. The cards were stacked against the Rams as they had lost twice previously in the season to SCAD, but they were well prepared for this matchup. Mobile jumped out to a 2-0 lead and went on to beat the Lady Bees 3-1, winning an Opening Round Match for the second straight season.
University of Mobile Volleyball
Several Lady Rams were honored for the successful season, as six players were named All-GCAC, and Whitney Knight and Paula Stilkey were named NAIA All-Americans. Knight finishes her career as a three-time All-American, while Stilkey finishes as a twotime All-American.
Paula Stilkey finished her career at Mobile as a two-time All-American.
“Paula and Whitney have meant a lot to this program on and off the court,” Campbell said. “It’s going to be different without them, but we are proud and grateful because they helped put the Lady Rams on the map.” 14
