2010 UM Coaches Person has served three seasons as head coach of the women’s program after serving 6 years as an assistant. The Lady Rams are 19-30-7 in his three seasons and four players have been named NAIA All-American under his direction. He began his collegiate playing career at Central Washington Brian Person University and eventually Head Coach finished at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks where he graduated in 1998 with a B.S. in Exercise Science. Person, who earned his MBA from the University of Mobile in May of 2002 with a 3.9 GPA, also has playing experience with Mobile. A former starter at right back for the Rams, he also played for the PDL Jackson Chargers in 1998-99. He has a USSF “B” License. He is an active member of the NSCAA and has spent nine summers working with the regional Olympic Developmental Program.

Laux has served 3 seasons on the Lady Rams’ coaching staff after serving as a graduate assistant for Spring Hill’s soccer program. Laux is in familiar territory, as he graduated from the University of Mobile in 2005 with a B.S in psychology and a minor in sports management. He was also a member of the 2002 men’s soccer team that won a NAIA National Championship and was the team’s 2004 Champion of Character award recipient.

He received his Masters of Sports Science in Sports Coaching from the US Sports Academy in March of 2010. He works in all aspects of the program and is relied upon heavily in recruiting. Laux has his USSF “C” license.

2010 Preview The 2010 University of Mobile women’s soccer team will look to improve upon last year’s 10-10-1 mark and take that final step to the national tournament. “We’ve made steady progress each of the past two years, and we are excited to see what this season will hold for us,” Head Coach Brian Person said. “We like the mix we have on offense and defense.” The Lady Rams lose two-time NAIA All-American Terri McCreadie up top, but return some fire power and stout defenders. 2009 All-American Missy Stovall returns after a team-leading 17 goals in 2009, while Christy Lachappelle returns after posting 7 goals and 8 assists. Mobile will also get midfielder Cherly Edgar back from injury.

Joining the returning players are several talented newcomers. Rebekah Counce and Madison Rumore will compete for starting spots in the defensive backfield. “We have a very strong core of returning players, but expect Rebekah and Madison to compete for significant minutes right away,” Person said.

“It’s tough to lose a player of Terri’s caliber, but we have some great talent on the wings and in the midfield,” Person said. “Missy and Christy are our go-to scorers, and we have several other players that we think will excel

“Our team will have to gel quickly with two key dates right off the bat,” Person said. “We’ve played Martin Methodist close the past few years, and Lee is a big game, as we might have to go through them in the conference tournament.” Top-15 schools AUM, William Carey and Northwood (FL) also dot the schedule as Mobile moves to the Southern States Athletic Conference. Mobile will open the season away Aug. 23 against rival Spring Hill College at 5 pm. “The new conference will definitely test us, but we are familiar with many of them from regional play,” Person said. “If we do our jobs as coaches, and the girls work to improve each day, we should be right where we want to be at the end of the year.”

Fiona Young was named NAIA All-American. 1997: The University of Mobile women’s soccer team went 24-0-0 and won the NAIA National Championship. Lady Rams beat Simon Fraser 2-1 in overtime to claim the title. Championship came one year after losing in the finals in a 5-overtime contest. Uwe Tittl was named NAIA Coach of the Year. 1997: The University of Mobile men’s golf team won the NAIA National Tournament. The Rams fired an 1152 to win by 30 strokes over Huntingdon (AL). The 72-hole tournament took place at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, OK. 1997: The University of Mobile men’s tennis team won its 2nd NAIA National Championship, finishing with 7 more points than AUM. Fernando Ibarrola was named the Ward-Ballinger Outstanding Player and Derrick Racine was named Coach of the Year. 1994: The University of Mobile women’s tennis team went 25-2 and won the NAIA National Championship. Melissa Metcalfe and Anita Pearson won the NAIA Doubles Championship. Anna Moll, Marilla Andrade, Melissa Metcalfe and Anita Pearson named NAIA All-Americans. 1993: The University of Mobile men’s tennis team finished with 28 points to beat out Auburn-Montgomery and North Florida for the NAIA National Championship. Aim of the SSAC - To promote the development of athletics as an integral part of the educational offerings of member institutions by means of democratic participation at the conference level. This aim shall be accomplished by means of the functioning of committees composed of representatives of those institutions which subscribe to and support athletic programs that shall culminate in truly democratic conference championship competition. The SSAC seeks membership only from accredited institutions that support this aim. The primary criteria for selection and encouragement of membership shall be educational emphasis. Goals for its SSAC Member Institutions to Achieve Its Aim * Ensure that intercollegiate athletics is an integral part of the total educational offering, under the control of those responsible for the administration of the institution. * Maintain high ethical standards through commitment to the principle of self-reporting. * Evaluate the athletics program in terms of the educational purpose of the institution. * Engage in competition with other institutions having similar athletic and academic philosophies and policies, while respecting the diversity that can exist in a conference setting and among its member institutions. Conference Incorporation - The SSAC is organized exclusively for charitable, religious, educational, or scientific purposes, including, for such purposes, the making of distribution to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under Section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954 (or the corresponding provision of any future United States Internal Revenue Law). Conference Name Change - The SSAC was incorporated under the name Georgia Alabama Carolina Conference, Inc. on the 16th day of March, 1999 and renamed the Southern States Athletic Conference, Inc. on the 27th day of June, 2005. All other provisions of the Articles of Incorporation for the Georgia Alabama Carolina Conference, Inc (now the Southern States Athletic Conference, Inc.) remained in effect.

2009 Review The University of Mobile women’s soccer team went 10-10-1 in the third season under Head Coach Brian Person in 2009, and finished one game shy of qualifying for the NAIA National Tournament.

Lady Rams were not far from reaching their potential, as five of the six losses were by only one goal, including a 2-1 loss in the final seconds to Top-5 Azusa Pacific and a 2-1 overtime loss to Belhaven.

“We’ve improved each of the past two years, and came very close to achieving our goal last year, which has laid a foundation for our future success,” Person said.

“That mid-season stretch was disappointing after our solid start, and it was tough being so close in so many big games,” Person said. “It just came down to missing some makeable goals and having defensive breakdowns at the wrong time.”

The Lady Rams started the year with a 3-1-1 mark, dropping only a 2-1 decision to perennial power Martin Methodist in overtime. They blanked Warner University, Warner Pacific and Nova Southeastern in the stretch.

From there, the Lady Rams closed out the regular season by splitting a pair of onegoal conference games, beating Spring Hill and falling to William Carey.

“Our season started off on a high note, but it could’ve been better,” Person said. “Our defense was very solid, but we should’ve won our opener and had a chance to make a statement versus Martin Methodist.”

At the GCAC Tournament, Mobile exacted revenge by eliminating Belhaven 1-0 to set up a finals showdown with William Carey. In the game, the Lady Crusaders’ defense proved to be too strong as Mobile fell 2-0.

Following a 2-0 win over Nova Southeastern, Mobile struggled to a 3-6 mark over the next nine contests.

“William Carey is always a tough team and we usually play them close,” Person said. “We had our chances, but their defense turned us away, and they kept the pressure on offensively.”

They lost four-straight to West Florida, AUM, Oklahoma City and Azusa Pacific to start the stumble, and then won three of the next five, dropping winnable games to Northwood and Belhaven. Despite the 3-6 record in the stretch, the

onship to try and earn a berth in the NAIA National Tournament. Mobile got past College of Saint Mary 4-1 and blanked Carroll College 1-0 to set up another showdown with William Carey for another championship. The game was another heart breaker for the Lady Rams, as they fell 2-0. William Carey struck for a 1-0 lead just minutes into action, and soon after, Mobile picked up a red card and was forced to play a man down. “At the beginning of the year, one of your goals is always to put yourself in position to make the National Tournament, and we did that,” Person said. “We faced a lot of early adversity versus William Carey and our girls put up a great fight, but we just could not pull it out.” Several Lady Rams were rewarded for the play on the field. Anna Maddox and Missy Stovall were named NAIA All-Americans, while they were joined as 1st-Team AllConference selections by Christy Lachappelle, Ashley Lachappelle and Terri McCreadie. Olivia Maddox and Danielle Byrd were named 2nd-Team All-Conference.

2009 UM Review Baseball: The Rams finished the season 20-34 overall and 13-21 in GCAC action. Season ended on day two of the GCAC Tournament versus Belhaven. Men’s Basketball: Rams finished 17-11 overall and 10-8 in GCAC play. Season ended with a four-over time loss to William Carey in the GCAC Quarterfinals. Ji Kimbrough was named GCAC Freshman of the Year, and was joined as a 1stTeam All-Conference member by Donte Walker. Defeated NCAA I Louisiana-Lafayette 68-64 on Nov. 24. Women’s Basketball: Lady Rams finished the year 17-12 overall and 9-9 in conference. Season ended at Loyola in the GCAC Quarterfinals. Alice Honnery was named 1st-Team All-GCAC. Set single-game blocks record with 12 and singleseason record with 135. Men’s Cross Country: UM men finished 5th at the GCAC Championship Meet. Josh Stodghill and Kaleb Heffner named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes. Women’s Cross Country: Lady Rams finished 6th at the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship Meet. Men’s Golf: Jacob Morgan won the 2010 individual GCAC Championship. Rams finished 2nd as a team. Season ended with a 4th-place finish at the NAIA Unaffiliated Play-In Round. Women’s Golf: Maegan Rice was named 1st-Team NAIA All-American and qualified for the NAIA National Tournament for the 4th-straight year. Taylor Lee was named a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete. Rice finished 17th at nationals. She won the NAIA Unaffiliated Qualifier. Men’s Soccer: The Rams finished the year 9-11 and 3-2. Chris Dillon was named Honorable Mention NAIA All-American. Mobile qualified for nationals and fell 0-2 at Embry-Riddle in the Opening Round. Rams beat William Carey for the GCAC Championship and defeated Asbury College for the NAIA Unaffiliated Championship. Jason Williams, Dillon and Onesimus Ikungo were named All-GCAC. Women’s Soccer: The Lady Rams finished 10-10-1 and 2-2. Missy Stovall and Anna Maddox named Honorable Mention NAIA All-Americans. Season ended versus William Carey in the NAIA Unaffiliated championship game. Maddox, Stovall, Christy Lachappelle, Terri McCreadie and Ashley Lachappelle named 1st-Team All-GCAC. Olivia Maddox and Danielle Byrd named 2nd-Team All-GCAC. Softball: Finished 34-19 and 11-5. Eliminated by William Carey in the GCAC Tournament.
