UMobile Administration Dr. Mark Foley has served as president of the University of Mobile since 1998 and is the third president of the university since its founding in 1961. During more than a decade of leadership, Dr. Foley has led the move to intentionally integrate faith and learning in all areas of university life, while raising academic standards, building new residence halls, establishing outstanding programs such as the Center for Performing Arts, and earning the private Christian university national rankings. His emphasis on the core values of faith, learning and leadership has extended to all operations of the university, from the classroom to the administrative offices. With these core values in place, the university is committed to graduating confident Christian men and women who have mastered the body of knowledge required by the degree they hold; who know how to think; who know what they believe and why they believe it; who possess the courage to live and work according to those beliefs; who accept responsibility as caretakers of that with which God has entrusted them; and who possess the willingness and skill to use their influence in appropriate and effective ways to change the world around them. Dr. Foley is a member of the Executive Committee of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, a past chairman of the Alabama Association of Independent Colleges and Schools, and a member of the Board of Directors of Victory Health Partners and Volunteers of America, Southeast, Inc. Previously, Dr. Foley was executive vice president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He holds a bachelor of business administration from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas; and a master of divinity and a doctor of philosophy in psychology and counseling from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He is an ordained minister, a former business owner, and has practiced as a professional counselor. His wife, Marilyn, is involved in many university activities. She holds a bachelor of science in education from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and is a former classroom educator. The Foleys have two children and two granddaughters. Their daughter, Molly, is married to Doug Sawyer, an accountant in Georgia, and they have two daughters, Avery and Abby. Their son, Rob, and his wife, Leah, reside in Colorado where he works with Christian ministries in the National Parks system.

In the past 12 years, more than 25 Rams have signed professional contracts, including current Major League baseball players J.C. Romero and Saul Rivera. The leadership that produced over 25 professional players also led the Rams to the 2001 NAIA World Series in Lewiston, ID and a 43-win season in 2008. Jacobs helped begin the University of Mobile baseball program in 1990, after coming to Mobile from UMS-Wright Preparatory School, where he spent two years as an assistant coach and the last four as the head coach. As the head coach of the Bulldogs, Jacobs led them to a second-place finish in the State 3A classification in 1987 and a state title in 1988. He was inducted into the UMS-Wright Hall of Fame this fall. In 1981, Jacobs coached the Evangel Christian School squad to a second-place finish in the Alabama Christian Athletic Conference. He began his coaching career at Central Baptist School, where his team won a district title in the Alabama Private School Association. As a college player, Jacobs had an outstanding career at the University of South Alabama under Eddie Stankey. He was a four-year letterman at USA and was the Jaguars’ leading hitter in 1976. Jacobs and his wife, Joy, are members of People of Mars Hill, where he serves as an elder. Mrs. Jacobs is a registered nurse, a graduate of the University of Mobile, and works for Surgicare of Mobile. Jacobs has been a featured speaker at several Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ functions.

Matthew Sparks enters his second season as a graduate assistant on the staff after playing for the University of Mobile baseball team for two seasons. Sparks caught for the Rams 2008-09, logging 66 games behind the plate as Mobile won 77 games in those two seasons, including a school-record 43 in 2008. He was a defensive force behind the plate, throwing out 23-of-38 would-be base stealers in his career.

2011 Preview Heading into the 2011 season in the competitive Southern States Athletic Conference, the Rams are banking on a deep team that can throw strikes and the ball with authority. “We think we have one of our deepest teams in years,” Head Coach Mike Jacobs said. “We also believe we have a very talented team with a nice combination of returning players and incoming talent.” The saying is “pitching wins championships,” and the Rams have 11 pitchers on the roster with four returning arms and seven newcomers. Chris Peacock, Cameron White, team captain John Ladnier and Jeff Lyons combined for over 200 innings last season and picked up 10 wins. “We expect each of these guys to come up big for us,” Jacobs said. “Peacock had some big outings for us, Ladnier proved to be a very good arm out of the pen, Lyons showed he can provide a lot of innings in relief and White started off really well on the mound last year, before injuries cut his time short.” Joining the staff are Josh Blaylock, John Irwin, Corey Fountain, Michael King, Blake Hanson, Jacob Knowles and Drew Esslinger. Corey comes back to Mobile after a year away from the team, while Hanson, Irwin, Esslinger, Blaylock and King all have JUCO experience. “Fountain was one of the most impressive arms on our 2009 staff, Esslinger is another lefty who uses deception to get hitters out, and Blaylock is a versatile athlete who can win a starting spot,” Jacobs said. “Knowles is another dual threat who has a good feel for pitching, King has great stuff and will be in the mix for a weekend

18

spot, Hanson likes the ball in his hand with the game on the line and Irwin will add another arm to eat up innings.”

and Knowles to compete for time at first base as the season progresses,” Jacobs said.”

Making up the other end of the battery, the Rams will have three new catchers. Sam Mahoney transfers in from Ohio University, Travis Bowen redshirted at Mobile last year and Ryan Waltman is a transfer from Lurleen B. Wallace.

Cody Barber is the lone returning outfielder, and he will be flanked by Blaylock, Jeremy Williams, Ryne Phillips and Walt Bedsole. Barber hit .295 last year with 27 RBI and 35 runs scored, while Phillips hit over .370 and Williams over .400 in JUCO ball last year.

“Mahoney is a 6-5 catcher with a very good arm who we expect to be a difference maker, while Bowen is a smart kid who had a year to learn by being around the game last year,” Jacobs said. “Waltman also has a good arm and hits with power. It is a big plus to have two big-time catchers to stop the running game. Bowen is recovering from surgery on his throwing arm, but he swings the bat and should help produce runs.” Directly behind the pitchers on the infield, the Mobile coaching staff will have its hands full getting players at-bats with a versatile group of athletes available. Cameron White, Brady King, Ben Negus, Derek Bourgeois, team captain Hunter Norris and Justin Beck return after seeing action in 2010. Beck led the team with a .366 average as a freshman 2nd baseman, Norris hit .307 and Bourgeois started 34 games, playing mostly at short stop. “We have a large group returning that all saw significant action last year,” Jacobs said. “Negus and King proved to be versatile players, White can handle the hot corner and swing the stick, and Bourgeois offers great range at short. We are excited to see Beck continue to improve and look for Norris to add even more pop to the lineup this season. The best thing about this group of infielders is that they are interchangeable.” “We also look for freshmen Keith Granger

University of Mobile

“Williams is a 5-tool player who can be a game-changer for us and Ryne is a lefty with power,” Jacobs said. “Blaylock loves to play the game, and he can hit with power, play all of the outfield positions and pitch. Bedsole is a good defensive outfielder who continues to improve.” The team will need everyone to step up as the Rams make the move to the SSAC for 2011. Mobile will compete in the West Division along with AUM, Loyola, Spring Hill, William Carey, Belhaven and Faulkner. “The GCAC had some very talented teams, but the SSAC is deeper and we will have our work cut out for us,” Jacobs said. “Thankfully we are familiar with our division foes since we always play home-andaway series with Faulkner and AUM.” Non-conference will pit the Rams against some tough foes like Lyon College, Lee University, Shorter University and Thomas University. “Thomas went 33-17 last season, Lee was one of the best teams in the nation and Lyon has given us tough games in the past when we have played them,” Jacobs said.

2010 Review The 2010 season saw the University of Mobile team finish 20-34 overall and 13-21 in the GCAC. Mobile just could not get on track throughout the year, finishing the 54-game schedule with only two winning streaks of more than two games. “When you go through a season like we did in 2010, we all must accept responsibility for the poor outcome,” Head Coach Mike Jacobs said. “As a staff we have to be able to find a way to motivate players when things go wrong.” During the 2010 season there were plenty of opportunities for motivation. The injury bug plagued Mobile, as the team lost five different starters for one month or longer during the season. Two were starting pitchers, and two others were at key positions: shortstop and catcher.

“It seemed like if something could go wrong, it did,” Jacobs said. “If we pitched well we couldn’t score runs, if the bats came alive we had trouble throwing strikes.” There were also some high notes to the season. The Rams picked up big wins over future conference foes Auburn-Montgomery and Faulkner University, as the Rams looked ahead to joining the SSAC in 2011. Junior Johnny Ladnier set a school record for appearances with 32, and freshman Justin Beck led the team in hitting with a .366 batting average. Despite the won-loss record, several seniors posted good numbers. Brad Sheffield scored a team high 37 runs and reached base at a .435 clip, while Travis Williamson belted 9 homeruns and slugged .532. Dustin Lee slugged .491 at the plate with 3 homeruns and Nick Laico posted a .960 fielding percentage behind the plate after getting injured in

the first game of the season. “We had a group of seniors that played with a lot of heart and they will be missed,” Jacobs said. “This is a season we want to put behind us. When a team has a bad season, it’s the coaches’ fault, but if there is a good season, it’s all about the players. That’s the way the game is played. I take the blame for 2010. Our focus for 2011 is to use the 2010 season as a learning tool to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
