Dr. Mark Foley has served as president of the University of Mobile since 1998 and is the third president of the university since its founding in 1961. During more than a decade of leadership, Dr. Foley has led the move to intentionally integrate faith and learning in all areas of university life, while raising academic standards, building new residence halls, establishing outstanding programs such as the Center for Performing Arts, and earning the private Christian university national rankings. His emphasis on the core values of faith, learning and leadership has extended to all operations of the university, from the classroom to the administrative offices. With these core values in place, the university is committed to graduating confident Christian men and women who have mastered the body of knowledge required by the degree they hold; who know how to think; who know what they believe and why they believe it; who possess the courage to live and work according to those beliefs; who accept responsibility as caretakers of that with which God has entrusted them; and who possess the willingness and skill to use their influence in appropriate and effective ways to change the world around them. Dr. Foley is a member of the Executive Committee of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, a past chairman of the Alabama Association of Independent Colleges and Schools, and a member of the Board of Directors of Victory Health Partners and Volunteers of America, Southeast, Inc. Previously, Dr. Foley was executive vice president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He holds a bachelor of business administration from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas; and a master of divinity and a doctor of philosophy in psychology and counseling from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He is an ordained minister, a former business owner, and has practiced as a professional counselor. His wife, Marilyn, is involved in many university activities. She holds a bachelor of science in education from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and is a former classroom educator. The Foleys have two children and two granddaughters. Their daughter, Molly, is married to Doug Sawyer, an accountant in Georgia, and they have two daughters, Avery and Abby. Their son, Rob, and his wife, Leah, reside in Colorado where he works with Christian ministries in the National Parks system.

Roy Patton will begin his first season at the University of Mobile after taking over for Peter Fuller. For Patton, the announcement marks a return to the city that honored him in 1996 by naming May 30 “Roy Patton Day” in recognition of his contributions to area youth soccer.
COACHES
Roy Patton
UMobile’s men’s soccer program was launched in 1991. Since then, the program has made 14 trips to the NAIA National Tournament, including winning the 2002 NAIA National Championship, NAIA runner-up in 1994 and 1999, and in the NAIA Round of 4 in 1993, 1997, 2000 and 2010. The program has an overall record of 275-122-22 and has produced 51 All-Americans. Patton is a former professional soccer player in both Ireland and the U.S. (Glentoran FC and Bangor FC, both Irish Professional Teams, and in the USISL with the Mobile Revelers and Vermont Wanderers). He was head men’s soccer coach at the University of South Alabama from 1980-1996, earning honors as Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year 12 times. At USA he had 14 consecutive NCAA Division 1 winning seasons, won the Sun Belt Conference from 1991-1995, and had a 100 percent graduation rate among four-year student-athletes. He was presented the National Meritorious Award for services to the game of soccer by the National Intercollegiate Soccer Official Association in 1993. At the University of Vermont, where he served as head men’s soccer coach from 1996-2003, the team won the America East in 2000 and made an NCAA appearance, was finalist in America East in 2002, and produced the first Vermont athlete to be named America East Men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year for all sports. Patton was named America East Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2000 Patton’s combined record at USA and as head men’s soccer coach at the University of Vermont is 270-146-36. When he left the collegiate coaching ranks for the athletic directorship at Plattsburgh State, Patton was ranked nationally in the top 20 among active Division I coaches in career wins and career winning percentage. Along with the success his players have enjoyed on the field and in the classroom, a number of Patton’s pupils have gone on to make their own marks in soccer. Eddie Carvacho played in the MLS, served as the U.S. National Team goalkeeper and is currently the goalkeepers coach at Clemson University. Colin Carmichael played for the Mobile Revelers and is the head coach of Oklahoma State’s women’s soccer program, and Brett Jacobs is an assistant coach for the 2010 MLS Champion Colorado Rapids. Patton also coached Goggi Rognavaldursson, who was named All-American, Academic All-American and was the NCAA Div I leading goal scorer in 1989. Patton has mentored numerous other players who have gone on to play professionally and enter the coaching ranks at various levels. Also, Patton has served as coaching director of Nordic Spirit Soccer Club in Burlington, Vermont (1999-2004); as director of athletics at Plattsburgh State University in New York (2004-2005); and as general manager and technical director of Middleton Yahara Soccer Club in Wisconsin (2006 to present). Previously, he was a chemistry and biology teacher with the Mobile County Public School System at Citronelle and Satsuma high schools (1982-1987) and was a science and physical education teacher in Belfast, Northern Ireland (19781980). He is a U.S. Soccer Federation “A” licensed coach and holds certifications with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, advanced national diploma, and Irish Football Association Grade 1. He was a founder and board member for the Mobile Revelers professional soccer franchise, and founder and board member for Vermont Wanderers, now known as the Vermont Voltage and rated as one of the best Professional Player Development Soccer League franchises in the U.S. He has served as a regional Olympic development coach from 1988-1992, and as state director of coaching in Alabama from 1988-1992. He served as chairman for soccer in the Sun Belt Conference from 1990-1994 and served on the NCAA Tournament Regional Selection Committee from 1990-1993. Patton holds a bachelor of education in biology and physical education from Queens University in Belfast, Northern Ireland; a master of education in exercise technology from University of South Alabama; and a Doctor of Education in sports management from the United States Sports Academy. He is married to Dr. Katherine Habeeb, M.D., of Mobile and they have two children.

2011 UMOBILE MEN’S SOCCER COACHES
Daniel Whelan Daniel Whelan will begin his second season as Assistant Coach of the University of Mobile men’s soccer program in 2011-12, after helping guide the team to the Round of 4 at the 2010 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship. The Manchester, England native served as a volunteer coach at Embry-Riddle in 2007 and served as interim head coach for the Spring Hill College men’s and women’s soccer teams in 2009. Before beginning his coaching career at Embry-Riddle, Whelan played for ERAU from 2003-06. The two-time NAIA All-American earned numerous honors in his playing career. He was also a three-time All Conference selection as well as the Florida Sun Conference and NAIA Region XIV Player of the Year in 2006. He served as team captain in both his junior and senior campaigns. Whelan, who received his B.S. from ERAU in Aeronautical Business Administration in 2007, was named an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District selection by CoSIDA and received an NAIA Champion of Character Scholarship. Before coming to the United States, he played at the highest level of youth soccer in England, the FA Youth Premier League, with the Blackburn Rovers Football Club in 2001-03.
Gerardo Flores Gerardo Flores begins his first season as Assistant Coach for the University of Mobile men’s soccer team. Flores is familiar with the program after appearing in 66 games for the Rams from 2006 to 2009. While playing mostly in the midfield, Flores tallied 4 goals and 6 assists in his career. He totaled 2 goals and 1 assist as a freshman in 2006. The Rams went a combined 43-32-3 in his four-year playing career, won two Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournaments (2008-09) and qualified for the NAIA National Tournament in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Mobile advanced all the way to the Elite Eight in 2008. Flores has racked up coaching experience as a youth soccer coach.

2011 UMOBILE MEN’S SOCCER The University of Mobile men’s soccer team will enter the 2011 season coming off a trip to the Round of 4 at the 2010 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship. The Rams will once again serve as co-host to the event in Orange Beach, Ala., but will enter this season with a new man at the helm, as Dr. Roy Patton takes over for Peter Fuller, who departs after 16 years at Mobile. Patton brings a 270-146-36 all-time mark at University of South Alabama and University of Vermont with him to Mobile.
Fredrik Madsen, a freshman from Norway is a newcomer that will fight for a starting spot right away. “Fredrik is expected to be an impact player right away,” Whelan said.
While the head coach will be different, the team will return 12 players that have seen significant action with the Rams, along with some talented newcomers that will look to make their mark in Mobile’s second year of competition in the Southern States Athletic Conference.
Fighting for minutes and providing depth in the defensive backfield will be, Samuel Weeks, Justin Dillenschneider, Anthony Greenlee, Tajay Higgins, Shane Mendenhall, Alex Swan, Frank Nshamamba, and Casey Wanschek.
“We lose some key guys in Jason, O, Ruben and Maddo, but overall we return a lot of talent,” Assistant Coach Daniel Whelan said. “And, all of those returning players got a taste of the Round of 4 last year and can hopefully lead the team back there.”
Midfielders Returning in the midfield are Bernardo Zamora, Stephen Okai, Kyle Kimbrell and Eoin Dolan. All five of those players saw action in 20 or more games last season, while Okai was a 1st-Team All-American.
Goalkeepers One of the key losses is goalkeeper Jason Williams, who logged 40 wins and 17 shutouts in his Mobile career. Vying to replace Williams is senior Kyle Buxton, who is seen action in 12 games over three years with Mobile, and a pair of newcomers in Xavier Audergon and Elijah Gibson.
“Okai is brilliant at setting up the offense, Kyle provides a defensive presence and a powerful leg, and Bernardo had some very nice games for us last year,” Whelan said. “Then you have Eoin, who helps supplement our attack from the midfield.”
“Elijah and Xavier should provide plenty of competition with Kyle to fight for the goalkeeper spot,” Whelan said. In front of the keeper, will be a stout backfield that returns Josh Shields, Jubril Lawal, Chris Dillon and Marc Bowron. They combined for 82 games played last season.

“We’ve got two seniors back there in Josh and Marc, who should provide plenty of leadership and some stability, while Lawal is one of the more athletic players on the team,” Whelan said. “Chris was named 1st-Team All-American last year and he was only a sophomore, we expect big things from him again this season.”

Newcomers will also have a chance to impact the team. “Michael Azira won a National Championship at Lindsey Wilson, while Kaleb Williamson is a standout from Satsuma,” Whelan said. Rounding out the roster at midfield are Alain Nshamamba, James Hayley, Ebenezer Amoha and David Belser.
Forwards Finally, up top, the Rams return 28 goals and 11 assists from the trio of Sam Blackburn, Deshorn Brown and Marc Joseph. Brown tallied 21 goals and was named 1st-Team All-American and ran away with numerous conference honors. “Deshorn is a different class,” Whelan said. “He’s just brilliant at finishing and is still only a sophomore. The Schedule Awaiting the players and coaches will be a schedule featuring 12 SSAC contests, now that the Divisions play each other. Conference play will begin Sept. 23 and 24 with home contests against Shorter and Lee University at 6 pm and 7 pm, respectively. “The SSAC is probably the top conference in the NAIA, and having to play all of the teams just makes our schedule that much tougher,” Whelan said. “We like that though, it will help prepare us for postseason play.” Some key non-conference foes are Embry-Riddle, Mississippi College, UTBrownsville and West Florida. “We have some tough non-conference games to prepare us as well,” Whelan said. “Embry is always tough, UTBrownsville beat us last year, and the guys always look forward to testing ourselves against West Florida.”

2006: The University of Mobile softball team went 51-2 on the season and won the program’s first-ever NAIA National Championship. Linden Jones was named NAIA Pitcher of the Year. Mayret Perez and Jones were named 1st-Team NAIA All-Americans. 2002: The University of Mobile men’s soccer team went 18-4-1 on the season and defeated Park University 2-1 to win the program’s first NAIA National Championship. Head Coach Peter Fuller was named NAIA Coach of the Year for the 3rd time. 1998: The University of Mobile women’s golf team won the NAIA National Championship. Head Coach Dr. Terry Hopper was named NAIA National Coach of the Year. Fiona Young was named NAIA All-American. 1997: The University of Mobile women’s soccer team went 24-0-0 and won the NAIA National Championship. Lady Rams beat Simon Fraser 2-1 in overtime to claim the title. Championship came one year after losing in the finals in a 5-overtime contest. Uwe Tittl was named NAIA Coach of the Year. 1997: The University of Mobile men’s golf team won the NAIA National Tournament. The Rams fired an 1152 to win by 30 strokes over Huntingdon (AL). The 72-hole tournament took place at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, OK. 1997: The University of Mobile men’s tennis team won its 2nd NAIA National Championship, finishing with 7 more points than AUM. Fernando Ibarrola was named the Ward-Ballinger Outstanding Player and Derrick Racine was named Coach of the Year. 1994: The University of Mobile women’s tennis team went 25-2 and won the NAIA National Championship. Melissa Metcalfe and Anita Pearson won the NAIA Doubles Championship. Anna Moll, Marilla Andrade, Melissa Metcalfe and Anita Pearson named NAIA All-Americans. 1993: The University of Mobile men’s tennis team finished with 28 points to beat out AuburnMontgomery and North Florida for the NAIA National Championship. Mattias Karlsson and Jacques Theron won the Doubles Championship for Mobile.

“Our guys really came into their own down the stretch, winning a very tough conference and performing well in three one-goal games at Nationals,” Assistant Coach Daniel Whelan said. “In the Notre Dame game, both keepers were stellar and we got off 16 shots, but we just couldn’t finish.” The Rams out shot Notre Dame 16-10 with eight shots in each period, but put only four shots on goal. Luke Holmes scored the game-winner in the 58th minute on a miss-kicked cross that found the far corner of the net. In the first game of the tournament, the Rams were pitted against Southern States Athletic Conference foe Belhaven, and prevailed in a back-and-forth 4-3 contest despite having to play a man down in the final 13 minutes. Deshorn Brown and Ruben Diaz each tallied two goals, while Stephen Okai finished with a pair of assists. Diaz knocked home goals in the 71st and 72nd minutes to seal the deal. Mobile got off 23 shots in the offensive showdown. “Our offense was really good all game long, and we needed it to overcome some defensive lapses,” Whelan said. “Deshorn and Ruben were huge, and it was a big win against a team that was familiar with what we try to do.” Next up was Bethel University (Tenn.) who knocked Mobile out of the Round of Eight in 2008. Bethel jumped on top with a pair of first half goals, but
the Rams used second half goals from Chris Dillon and Onesimus Ikungo to grab the win, with Ikungo knocking in the game-winner with under a minute left in regulation. Jason Williams made seven saves in goal. “After facing a conference foe, we had to battle a team that won it all just two years ago and we started out a little rusty, giving up five shots on target in the first half,” Whelan said. “Getting the tying goal just eight minutes into the final half helped calm our guys and then O’s late goal was brilliant. It was a huge win.” Prior to Nationals, the Rams swept through the SSAC Tournament with wins over Lee, Shorter and Southern Poly by a combined 8-2 margin. They blanked Southern Poly 2-0 in the finals. “Our guys performed really well all season in a new and very tough conference, and that performance in the tournament gave us a lot of momentum heading to Orange Beach,” Whelan said. Heading into postseason play, Mobile went 12-3-2 in an impressive regular season showing, including running out of the gates with a 7-1-1 start that showcased wins over Bethel, Southern Poly and Shorter.
“It was good to get tested some heading into postseason play, because you know all tournament games are going to be a battle,” Whelan said. As you would expect following a trip to the Round of Four, postseason honors poured in for several UMobile players.
2010 REVIEW
Serving as the host school for the 2010 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship, the University of Mobile men’s soccer team advanced all the way to the Round of Four, before falling by a 1-0 score to Notre Dame College and ending the season with a 17-4-2 overall record. It was the team’s 14th alltime appearance at the tournament.
Deshorn Brown, Stephen Okai and Chris Dillon were named 1st-Team NAIA All-Americans, while Brown was named the SSAC’s Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. Jason Williams, Dillon and Okai joined Brown as All-Conference selections. The SSAC West AllDivision team added David Maddren as an honoree. Brown, Ruben Diaz and Dillon were named to the NAIA All-Tournament Team for their work at the National Championships. “We had so many guys turn in invaluable performances,” Whelan said. “Jason, Maddren and Dillon anchored our defense, Okai patrolled the middle of the field and helped set up our offense, and then you have Deshorn and Ruben providing scoring threats on the outside. They were fun to watch.”
“We knew the early schedule would test us, and when the guys responded with seven wins in nine games we knew it could be a special season,” Whelan said. After that opening stretch, the only regular season losses came in the form of a 1-2 loss at UT-Brownsville and a 2-3 loss to NCAA-II West Florida. Mobile tied Belhaven 1-1 and squeaked out 1-0 wins over rival Spring Hill and always-tough William Carey.

2009: Finished 9-11, won GCAC Tourney and lost in 1st round of NAIA National Tournament. Chris Dillon named Honorable Mention AA. 2008: Finished the season at 13-7-2 and ranked #14 in the NAIA Top-25. Won the GCAC Championship and hosted a NAIA National Championship Opening Round game, where they beat UT-Brownsville. Mobile advanced to the Elite 8 of the NAIA National Tournament before falling to Bethel. Matt Watts was named 2nd-Team NAIA All-American, while Ruben Diaz was an Honorable Mention selection. Watts was named GCAC Player of the Year, while Jason Williams, Thomas Wharf, David Maddren, Diaz and Jack St. Hilaire joined him as All-GCAC selections. 2007: Finished the season with a 14-5-1 record. Advanced to NAIA National Tournament for 11th time. Lost to Embry-Riddle in 1st Round. Thomas Wharf, Caetano Lima and Ruben Diaz were named 3rd-Team NAIA All-Americans.
