UMobile Administration Dr. Mark Foley has served as president of the University of Mobile since 1998 and is the third president of the university since its founding in 1961. During more than a decade of leadership, Dr. Foley has led the move to intentionally integrate faith and learning in all areas of university life, while raising academic standards, building new residence halls, establishing outstanding programs such as the Center for Performing Arts, and earning the private Christian university national rankings. His emphasis on the core values of faith, learning and leadership has extended to all operations of the university, from the classroom to the administrative offices. With these core values in place, the university is committed to graduating confident Christian men and women who have mastered the body of knowledge required by the degree they hold; who know how to think; who know what they believe and why they believe it; who possess the courage to live and work according to those beliefs; who accept responsibility as caretakers of that with which God has entrusted them; and who possess the willingness and skill to use their influence in appropriate and effective ways to change the world around them. Dr. Foley is a member of the Executive Committee of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, a past chairman of the Alabama Association of Independent Colleges and Schools, and a member of the Board of Directors of Victory Health Partners and Volunteers of America, Southeast, Inc.

2011 Preview The University of Mobile women’s soccer team will enter the 2011 season fresh off a trip to the Round of 16 at the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship and a SSAC West Division Championship. If the team is to build off of last season’s success, they will have to gel to make up for the loss of some talented players. “You lose players every year, but losing Louise Arseneault, Anna Maddox and Madison Rumore in the back and Missy Stovall up top will be tough,” Head Coach Brian Person said. “It will take a team effort and some young players rising to the occasion to make up for those losses.” Forwards Leading the way at the striker spot will be 3rd-Team NAIA All-American Christy Lachappelle, who tallied 11 goals and 8 assists last season, and SSAC All-Tournament team senior Kassie Ruff, who returns after netting 8 goals. “We are going to need Christy and Kassie to lead our attack and score a lot of goals for us,” Person said. “We feel they are both capable of doing that, and are looking forward to seeing them continue to work.”
“We are excited that Jesslyn chose us and expect her to impact our team right away,” Person said. “Bailey, Alyssa and Hillary should improve rapidly and contribute minutes as the season progresses.”
“We have some good returning players in the midfield,” Person said. “Bri has worked to improve her scorer’s mentality, while Ebiz, Melissa and Olivia are relentless on the field and just get after it.” Incoming players expected to impact the midfield spot for Mobile are Daphne product Brianna Heiss; Houston, Texas native Bethan Morgans and JUCO transfer Molley Ward. “Bethan and Molley will bring valuable experience to the position and be able to compete for time right away, while Brianna is a strong, athletic freshman who should see significant minutes as the season progresses,” Person said. Mobile also has Kelsie Ruff returning after playing in all 21 games last year. “Kelsie is very versatile and we expect her to continue to be a valuable player,” Person said. Some of the midfielders will be able to drop back and log minutes in the defensive backfield, where they will join only one returning defender. Defenders Bekah Counce is the lone returning defender for the Lady Rams after starting in every game as a freshman last season and being named to the SSAC West All-Freshman team. “Bekah was tremendous for us last year, and we are really looking for her to take the lead role in replacing Anna, Louise and Madison,” Person said.
Igniting the attack will be a solid core group of midfielders and some talented newcomers.
With the lack of returning players, the newcomers will be expected to compete early and often. Kelsey Pope comes to Mobile via The Woodlands, TX; JUCO transfer Moriah Beeler hails from Nine Mile Falls, WA; and Rebekah Spalding is a native of Bastrop, TX.
Midfielders Elisabeth Davis, Brianna Simmons, Melissa Maddox and Olivia Maddox all return after seeing action for the Lady
“Kelsey is coming off a knee injury, but gradually gaining confidence, while Rebekah played for one of the top five club teams in the country in the
Lonestar Soccer Club and should bring experience and energy right away. Moriah will be ready to impact our team immediately coming off a season where she was voted to the NWAACC All-Star team,” Person said. Goalkeepers Waiting as the last line of defense will be Lorna Brownlie, who returns after going 12-6-1 in goal last season with 7 shutouts and 56 saves. “We are looking for Lorna to be one of our leaders this year and be a rock in goal for us,” Person said. “She was very good this summer in the WPSL and should bring that confidence into the season.” Providing depth behind Brownlie will be JUCO transfer Gill McMahon and UpsonLee product Alexandra Watson. “Gill brings size and experience to the GK position and should push Lorna for the No. 1 spot. Alexandra suffered an injury late last year, but we expect to see rapid improvement, and are excited to have her,” Person said. Schedule Awaiting the Lady Rams will be 18 regular season games, beginning Aug. 25 against UT-Brownsville in Hattiesburg, MS, and ending with a home date versus Spring Hill Oct. 29. Half of the contests are home dates, not including a tournament in Orange Beach Sept. 9-10, where Mobile will face Carroll and Westminster. SSAC play will begin on Sept. 23 against Shorter. This year all teams in the league will play each other, unlike last year when only division games counted in the conference standings. “The conference will be tougher with having to play everyone, as teams will have a lot of games to make up ground in the standings,” Person said. “On the other hand, we will be familiar with everyone when postseason play begins.”

2010 Review The 2010 season saw the University of Mobile women’s soccer team go 13-7-1 and return to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time since 2000. The Lady Rams also came in at No. 11 in the final NAIA Top-25 Poll.
The team came a long way from the 2-31 mark they put up in the first six games of the year after facing four doubleovertime contests and perennial powers Lee and Martin Methodist. “We knew going in that the early part of our schedule would be tough, but I think it helped set the tone for the season and showed our team that we could battle anyone,” Person said. “The key was going from just battling the good teams to beating them, and we started to do that.”
“This was a big step forward for our program,” Head Coach Brian Person said. “When I became the head coach, my goal was to build the program back into a national title contender, and advancing to the Round of 16 is a step in that direction.” To get to the National Tournament, the Lady Rams advanced to the 2010 SSAC Championship Game before falling 2-1 to eventual NAIA National Champion Lee University.
but Rebekah Counce scored in the 51st minute to knot it up.
2011 Women’s Soccer
“The SSAC features a lot of talented teams and advancing to the finals in our first year was huge,” Person said. “We’ve always struggled to beat William Carey, so to beat them 3-1 in the semifinals was a great accomplishment.”

The Lady Rams went toe-to-toe with the Lady Flames, ending the first 45 minutes with the score tied at 1-1 after Kassie Ruff scored in the 43rd minute. Mobile upped the pressure in the final period, out shooting Lee 7-5, but they could not put any shots in the back of the net, and Lee won it with a goal in the 72nd minute. “Our girls turned in a quality effort against a great team,” Person said. “We got some good opportunities in the second half to take the lead, but just could not finish.” The run through the tournament earned Mobile a chance to host Embry-Riddle in a NAIA Opening Round contest for the right to advance to the Round of 16 at the final site of the NAIA National Tournament in Decatur, Ala. Despite being out-shot 19-9 and falling behind twice in the game, the Lady Rams prevailed. Christy Lachappelle led the way in the game with the winning goal in the 81st minute and a pair of assists, while Samantha Bird made nine saves in goal. Embry-Riddle led 2-1 at the half,

Christy Lachappelle was named a 3rdTeam NAIA All-American.
“You know postseason games are going to be tough and we definitely had our hands full in the game,” Person said. “Sam came up huge in goal, filling in for Lorna, and the girls responded each time Embry scored.” The win sent Mobile to the Round of 16, but unfortunately the team was forced to battle Lee University, whom they had already faced twice on the year. Just like in the previous two meetings, the Lady Rams stood tough against the Flames. Missy Stovall put Mobile on the board first in the 32nd minute, but Lee answered back just two minutes later with a game-tying penalty kick. With the Lady Rams only able to get one shot off in the final period, Lee won it in the 64th minute. “It was unlucky that we had to face a team that knew us so well, but when you are down to the final 16 teams in the country, it’s going to be a tough contest no matter whom you face,” Person said. “Our defense hung tough against an early barrage of shots to allow us to take the lead, but them answering just two minutes later took a little steam out of us. Then, in the second half, we just couldn’t generate an attack.”
Mobile
After back-to-back double-overtime losses, the Lady Rams went 8-2 to close out the regular season, suffering only a loss to NCAA-II power West Florida and a 1-0 loss to William Carey. The defense held the opponent to one goal or less in eight of those games. “We went into the postseason on a nice run and it paid off,” Person said. The team’s success led to several players being honored for their individual efforts.
