Administration Dr. Mark Foley has served as president of the University of Mobile since 1998 and is the third president of the university since its founding in 1961. During 15 years of leadership, Dr. Foley has led the move to intentionally integrate learning, faith and leadership in all areas of university life, while raising academic standards, building new residence halls, establishing outstanding programs such as the Center for Performing Arts and The College of Christian Leadership, and leading the university to national rankings. His emphasis on the core values of faith, learning, conviction, integrity, stewardship and leadership has extended to all operations of the university, from the classroom to the administrative offices. With these core values in place, the university is committed to graduating confident Christian men and women who have mastered the body of knowledge required by the degree they hold; who know how to think; who know what they believe and why they believe it; who possess the courage to live and work according to those beliefs; who accept responsibility as caretakers of that with which God has entrusted them; and who possess the willingness and skill to use their influence in appropriate and effective ways to change the world around them. These values lie at the heart of the University’s 2020 Vision strategic plan that sets as its outcome: “By 2020, The University of Mobile will be a nationally recognized voice and transforming influence in the revitalization of Christian faith and character in America.” Dr. Foley held membership on the Executive Committee of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Executive Committee and past chairman of the Alabama Association of Independent Colleges and Schools, and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Volunteers of America, Southeast, Inc. Previously, Dr. Foley was executive vice president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas; and a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Philosophy in psychology and counseling from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He is an ordained minister, a former business owner, and has practiced as a professional counselor. His wife, Marilyn, is involved in many university activities. She holds a Bachelor of Science in education from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and is a former classroom educator. The Foleys have two children and two granddaughters. Their daughter, Molly, is married to Doug Sawyer, an accounting executive in Georgia, and they have two daughters, Avery and Abby. Their son, Rob, and his wife, Leah, reside in Colorado. Rob is on the staff of Denver Theological Seminary and Leah is a registered nurse.

2012-13 Preview The 2012-13 University of Mobile men’s basketball team will take the court with a new look, as only three players that have seen significant action will return.
2009-11, averaging 5.5 points and 3.6 rebounds, with highs of 19 points and 10 boards.
“I like our athleticism this year,” Head Coach Joe Niland said. “As we move along, we’ll be pretty solid, and our depth will be a strength once the young guys learn the college game. With all of the new players though, we will need to come together.” Headlining the backcourt are Birmingham, Ala., natives Marcus Polnett and Chris Richardson; Viera, Fla., native TJ Simon; Pensacola, Fla., Marcus Polnett is one of few returning starters for the Rams in 2012-13. native Matthew Smith-Cook; Sorrento, La., native Brandon Morris; On the wing, the Rams have Powder Springs, Ga., product Jonesboro-Hodge, La., native Kwame Brandon Waters; Mobile native Steven Beard and Morris. Beard is a 6-4 Thomas and Chattanooga, Tenn., junior and Morris is a 6-1 junior. native Nick Ellis. Polnett is a 5-10 senior that played in 30 games last year with 5.7 points per game and a team-high 97 assists. Waters saw limited action, appearing in six games for the Rams. Richardson is a 6-1 transfer from NCAA-I UTMartin where he played in 61 games over the past two seasons. “Our only returning guard with a lot of experience is Marcus, and he’s been really solid and we expect him to continue that,” Niland said. “He brings a lot of leadership and has always been a good defender. Freshman TJ Simon is expected to push for playing time. He’s a really good on the ball defender, sees the floor well and will be a real asset. Smith-Cook, Waters, Thomas and Ellis will all provide valuable depth.”
“Kwame brings a lot of experience, and is a big guard that can attack the basket and shoot very well,” Niland said. “He plays aggressive defense and brings athleticism on the perimeter. Morris is a scoring wing that we are very high on.” Inside, the Rams boast Springfield, La., native Cody Scott; Lake Charles, La., native Kevin Calloway; Clearwater, Fla., native Julien Sargent; Pensacola, Fla., native Cole Fountain; Carson, Calif., native Dominick Brumfield and Detroit, Mich., native DeVondre Peoples.
“Kevin has played a lot, and we are hoping he’ll pick up the pace, while Cody has lots of potential if he grows,” Niland said. “Julien is a very strong, skilled post player that provides the size we need and JP will also provide great size. Cole is a tremendous athlete, and once he and DeVondre figure out the college game, they should really fit well into our uptempo system.” Awaiting the Rams is a 29-game schedule, featuring 17 home games and 18 Southern States Athletic Conference games. “The size of the conference limits the non-conference schedule, but we still have a quality one, facing GCAC teams Xavier and Fisk, Carroll and Montanta Tech on the road and St. Thomas out of Florida,” Niland said. “The SSAC West is very balanced from top to bottom. We would’ve won it last season if we’d beaten Loyola, and it’s going to be another dog fight this year. We are looking forward to the challenge.”
Scott played in 31 games last season, averaging 4.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game while earning SSAC All-Freshman honors, and Calloway played in 57 games from

The University of Mobile men’s basketball team finished the 2011-12 season with a 1417 record and a second-round loss to Shorter University at the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament. The Rams started the season with single-digit victories over Texas College and perennial power SUNO, but went on to drop five of the next six contests. That included a sixpoint loss at Southern Poly, a two-point loss to eventual SSAC champ Shorter and an 18-point thumping of Lee University. Against Lee, the Rams got to the free throw line 29 times, and got a 31-point, 16-rebound effort from Antonio Hester. In the close loss to Shorter, the Hawks shot 52% from the floor and 50% from 3-point range, while Ji Kimbrough poured in 27 points for the Rams. “That was a really tough start to the season, facing a bunch of talented teams,” Niland said. “We picked up a couple of great wins over talented SUNO and Lee teams, but we couldn’t close against Southern Poly and Shorter, and then we couldn’t score against Xavier.” The Jekyll and Hyde act continued as the Rams went 4-3 over the next seven before starting SSAC West action. In that stretch, the Rams blasted Life University by 20, but then turned around and lost by 18 to the same squad. Mobile picked up close road wins at Southern Wesleyan and Emmanuel as well. In the 104-84 win over Life, the Rams forced 28 turnovers and shot 47% from the floor, while Christian Salinas tallied 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting.

“We showed a lot by beating an always-tough Life University by 20, and finishing out a couple of close conference wins on the road,” Niland said. “It would’ve been nice to finish off a sweep of SUNO or Lee, but really splitting with those teams isn’t bad.”
The Rams earned a first-round matchup with Brewton-Parker at the SSAC Tournament, and picked up a 58-55 victory. The team held Brewton to 32% shooting from the floor and 24% from 3-point range in the game. Brock Dockery and Hester led with 14 points apiece.
Over the next six games, the Rams went 2-4 in SSAC West action with a non-conference loss to Tougaloo sprinkled in. All six games were decided by single digits, with the Rams pulling out road wins over William Carey and Spring Hill, and losing to Belhaven, AUM and Faulkner.
Next, Mobile faced 2nd-ranked Shorter, and lost 85-64 after being outscored 55-32 in the opening half. Shorter out shot Mobile 52% to 43% from the floor and 52% to 28% from 3-point range.
The Rams beat William Carey despite shooting only 33% from the floor thanks to a 10-of23 effort from 3-point range, and the team turned the ball over only nine times against Spring Hill. The three conference losses were by a combined 11 points, with the toughest being a 57-56 overtime loss at AUM, where the Rams hit only 9-of-16 free throws. The Rams made only nine free throws in three of the losses. “We started out nicely with a tough win at William Carey, and it’s always nice to beat Spring Hill,” Niland said. “We had a chance for a great start to division play, but just couldn’t close out some potential wins.”
“We were up and down all season, and that showed up in the postseason,” Niland said. “We gutted out a close win against Brewton, but then played one of our worst halves to start the Shorter game, and couldn’t recover.” Following the season, Antonio Hester was named 3rd-Team NAIA All-American after averaging 15.5 points and 8.6 rebounds per game, while Ji Kimbrough (14 ppg, 3.3 rpg) joined Hester as a 1st-Team All-Conference selection. Hester was also named the SSAC Newcomer of the Year. “Ji and Antonio were great all year,” Niland said. “Antonio was a force in the paint, and Ji just knows how to get the ball in the basket.”
Mobile went on to close out the regular season with a 4-4 mark, beating William Carey and Spring Hill for the second time each and then exacting revenge on Auburn Montgomery.
