Administration

Dr. Mark Foley has served as president of the University of Mobile since 1998 and is the third president of the university since its founding in 1961. During more than a decade of leadership, Dr. Foley has led the move to intentionally integrate faith and learning in all areas of university life, while raising academic standards, building new residence halls, establishing outstanding programs such as the Center for Performing Arts, and earning the private Christian university national rankings. His emphasis on the core values of faith, learning and leadership has extended to all operations of the university, from the classroom to the administrative offices. With these core values in place, the university is committed to graduating confident Christian men and women who have mastered the body of knowledge required by the degree they hold; who know how to think; who know what they believe and why they believe it; who possess the courage to live and work according to those beliefs; who accept responsibility as caretakers of that with which God has entrusted them; and who possess the willingness and skill to use their influence in appropriate and effective ways to change the world around them. Dr. Foley is a member of the Executive Committee of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, a past chairman of the Alabama Association of Independent Colleges and Schools, and a member of the Board of Directors of Victory Health Partners and Volunteers of America, Southeast, Inc. Previously, Dr. Foley was executive vice president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He holds a bachelor of business administration from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas; and a master of divinity and a doctor of philosophy in psychology and counseling from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He is an ordained minister, a former business owner, and has practiced as a professional counselor. His wife, Marilyn, is involved in many university activities. She holds a bachelor of science in education from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and is a former classroom educator. The Foleys have two children and two granddaughters. Their daughter, Molly, is married to Doug Sawyer, an accountant in Georgia, and they have two daughters, Avery and Abby. Their son, Rob, and his wife, Leah, reside in Colorado where he works with Christian ministries in the National Parks system.

That came a year after the team advanced to the Round of 16. In each of the past four seasons, at least two of Person’s players have been named NAIA All-Americans. Terri McCreadie and Anna Maddox were honored in 2008, Maddox and Missy Stovall were honored in 2009, and Maddox, Christy Lachappelle and Stovall were honored in 2010 and Lorna Brownlie, Rebekah Counce, Christy Lachappelle and Olivia Maddox were honored last season. He has also coached the Conference Player of the Year in 2008, the Defensive Player of the Year in 2009 and the Offensive Player of the Year in 2010. Person’s record as the head coach at UMobile sits at 51-41-9. He began his collegiate playing career at Central Washington University and eventually finished at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks where he graduated in 1998 with a B.S. in Exercise Science. 2012 Preview

in early, Isaacson is a physical player and Brackin is a hard-worker that will compete right away.”

Last season’s UMobile women’s soccer team took another step forward towards being a national champion caliber team, and the 2012 version will look to continue that progress that saw the Lady Rams go 19-4-1 and advance to the Round of 8 at the 2011 NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship.

Standing in as the team’s last line of defense will be returners Sylvia Skultety and Gillian McMahon, and newcomers Tori McKenzie and Rebecca Wynne. “We’ve been blessed with All-American keepers the last several years and we will look for someone to step up and seize the job this year,” Person said. “McMahon saw playing time last year and performed well, Skultety redshirted for us last year, and Wynne brings the athleticism and work rate to compete for the job as a freshman.”

The Lady Rams lost only two seniors that saw significant playing time last season in Kassie Ruff and Lorna Brownlie, and the team has a group of seven seniors that will be counted upon heavily this season. “Kassie and Lorna will obviously be tough to replace, but the leadership and skills of our senior class will really help,” UMobile Head Coach Brian Person said. The 2012 senior class is Jesslyn Fagundes, Olivia Maddox, Christy Lachappelle, Kelsie Ruff, Courtney Lavender, Elisabeth Davis and Brianna Simmons. Last season, that group combined for 44 of the teams 67 goals, led by Lachappelle’s 19 and Fagundes’ 14. Two-time All-American Lachappelle and Fagundes will headline the teams’ forward options, along with holdover Bethan Morgans. Newcomers expected to help attack are Pell City, Ala., native Katie Compton, Clovis, Calif., native Monique Martinez and Jackson, Miss., native LaTesha Fleming. “We will look for Christy and Jesslyn to repeat last season’s performances and lead the group, while Bethan got meaningful playing time last season and should be able to up her performance with a year at the collegiate level under her belt,” Person said. “Among the newcomers, LaTesha is very athletic, Monique brings JUCO experience and Katie will bring good size and athletic ability.” Patrolling the midfield for Mobile will be a strong group of midfielders, led by 2011 NAIA All-American Olivia Maddox and Bri Simmons, who tallied 10 goals

and 7 assists last season. Holdovers Ruff and Melissa Maddox will see time at midfield and at defender. Newcomers expected to help out in the midfield are Kali Carver and Brittany Bradford. Martinez will see some time at forward and midfield, while Paige Brackin offers the ability to play at defender and in the midfield. “Olivia is an excellent defensive presence in the midfield and Bri really helps our offense go,” Person said. “Among the newcomers, Kali brings a great work rate, Brittany brings skill and experience and Paige brings athleticism that we can plug in at several spots.” The defense will feature a solid group of returners and newcomers. Rebekah Counce, Rebekah Spalding, Davis, Melissa Maddox, Ruff and Courtney Lavender are the returners that will see time in the backfield, while Sarah Duren, Emma Isaacson and Brackin are newcomers that will seek playing time.

Awaiting the team will be a tough schedule with non-conference games against ranked opponents, and the always-tough Southern States Athletic Conference competition. The team will open the season against Grand View (RV), Martin Methodist (7) and Northwood (15), and then Sept. 14 and 15 in Orange Beach, the Lady Rams will battle 2nd-ranked Concordia (Ore.) and 4th-ranked Embry-Riddle. The conference slate begins at Brenau Sept. 21, and from there, the team will close out the regular season with ten more SSAC contests. “The SSAC is the best conference in the country,” Person said. “Lee has won four-straight national titles, and AUM, William Carey and Brenau are all receiving votes in the preseason poll. To prep for that tough schedule we are playing one of the toughest non-conference schedules in recent memory, capped by what should be an exciting tournament in Orange Beach with a pair of Top-5 matchups.”

“We will look for Counce and Spalding to really anchor the defense, while Davis, Maddox and Ruff all really stepped up last year after being thrust into playing time at this spot, and we expect more of the same from them this year,” Person said. “Duren brings the work rate and athleticism to factor

UMobile Women’s Soccer

2011 Review

The 2011 season saw the UMobile women’s soccer team take another step forward, going 19-4-1 overall and an impressive 11-1 in the always-tough Southern States Athletic Conference. The team went on to advance to the Round of 8 at the 2011 NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship and finished the season ranked 5th in the final NAIA Top-25.

crowd, and I was proud of the girls for bouncing back after the early goal,” Person said. That win sent UMobile to the final site of the tournament in Decatur, Ala., to face 16th-ranked Graceland University. Jesslyn Fagundes led the way in the game, finishing with a hat trick, including goals in the 8th and 46th minutes. Graceland did not manage a goal until the 73rd minute, and the Lady Rams went on to a 4-1 victory. Ruff and Lachappelle each finished with two assists in the game.

“We want to compete for championships, and we took another step forward in that quest,” Head Coach Brian Person said. “After going to the Round of 16 last year, it was nice to take that a step further this season.” After starting the season with a scoreless tie against No. 19 UT-Brownsville and a 3-2 loss to 14th-ranked Northwood, the Lady Rams got their legs under them and picked up five-straight wins. That included a 5-4 double-overtime victory over 19th-ranked Westminster on Christy Lachappelle’s goal in the 108th minute after Westminster scored four goals in the second half to tie it up. UMobile went on to upend Martin Methodist on another overtime goal from Lachappelle, as Lorna Brownlie made five saves in the 1-0 shutout victory. “Westminster and Martin Methodist were big wins for us,” Person said. “We blew a 4-0 lead against Westminster and it was good to see our players respond and get the late victory. We’ve been trying for years to get the best of perennial power Martin Methodist, and we finally did it. Our defense played great and Christy came through again for us.” After the Martin Methodist game, the Lady Rams headed into their SSAC schedule and continued to roll despite an early 3-1 loss to National Champion Lee University. Following that game, Mobile’s defense allowed one goal or less over the next 12 games. Mobile closed out the regular season with ten-straight victories. That run included a 1-0 win at William Carey when Brownlie made eight saves. “You always want to finish the regular season on a hot streak, and we did that,” Person said. “Our defense really set the tone for the season and our offense was able to produce goals consistently.”

2011 3rd-Team NAIA All-American Lorna Brownlie The strong finish sent Mobile to the conference tournament as the 2nd seed, behind only Lee University. In the first two rounds, the Lady Rams picked up right where they left off with a 1-0 win over Shorter and a 3-0 win over Brenau. The Lady Rams allowed only four shots on goal over the two games and Kassie Ruff produced a hat trick against Brenau. That set up a showdown with Lee for the second-straight season, and the Lady Rams came up just-short, falling 2-0 to the eventual National Champions. Lee out shot Mobile 14-4 and scored one goal in each half. “Lee’s an incredibly talented team and we hung in there, but could not generate enough of an attack to take any momentum,” Person said. For the second-straight year, the Lady Rams hosted a NAIA National Championship Opening Round game and won that game, taking down 19th-ranked UT-Brownsville 2-1. The Lady Scorpions jumped ahead 1-0 with a goal just two minutes into the game and outshot the Lady Rams 20-9, but Brownlie snagged seven saves to keep the team in the game. UMobile stayed the course and tied the game up in the 26th minute on a goal from Lachappelle, before Brianna Simmons produced the game-winner in the 75th minute. “It’s great to be able to play a national tournament game in front of our home

www.umobile.edu

“Scoring so early in each half helped calm our nerves and we were able to control the tempo for the majority of the game, and keep Graceland from seizing any momentum,” Person said. From there, the Lady Rams earned a matchup with 3rd-ranked Azusa Pacific in the Round of 8. Azusa’s defense stifled the Lady Rams’ attack all game, and the Lady Cougars were able to keep up consistent pressure throughout, winning 4-0. They out shot Mobile 13-0. “It was an outstanding season,” Person said. “Our ladies showed a lot of heart all season and performed well against some tremendous competition.” Following the season, several Lady Rams were honored for their work during 2011. Lorna Brownlie was named 3rdTeam NAIA All-American, while Rebekah Counce, Christy Lachappelle and Olivia Maddox earned Honorable Mention NAIA All-American honors. On the conference side, Person was named SSAC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year, and Brownlie, Lachappelle and Maddox were named All-Conference. Counce and Fagundes were named 2ndTeam All-Conference, while Brianna Heiss and Rebekah Spalding were named to the All-Freshman Team. Maddox, Lachappelle, Elisabeth Davis and Kelsie Ruff were named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. “So many of our players had outstanding seasons, and that showed up in the season we had,” Person said. “It reflects well on our program for so many studentathletes to be honored for their hard work on and off the field.”
