Coaches
Head Coach: Daniel Whelan
Daniel Whelan will begin his 1st season at the helm of the University of Mobile men’s soccer program in 2014-15 after serving as assistant coach for the Rams for the past five seasons. In that time, the club compiled a 68-32-5 record with four trips to the NAIA National Championship, including a trip to the Round of Four in 2010 and the championship game in 2012. Prior to coming to UMobile, Whelan served as a volunteer coach at Embry-Riddle in 2007 and interim head coach at Spring Hill in 2009. Prior to coaching, Whelan played at ERAU from 2003-06, earning two NAIA All-America honors, three All-Conference selections and Florida Sun Conference Player of the Year honors. He received his Bachelor of Science in aeronautical business administration from Embry-Riddle in 2007. He was named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection by CoSIDA and received an NAIA Champion of Character Scholarship. Before coming to the United States, he played at the highest level of youth soccer in England, the FA Youth Premier League, with the Blackburn Rovers Football Club in 2001-03.
Assistant Coach: Gerardo Flores Gerardo Flores will begin his 1st season as assistant men’s soccer coach at UMobile in 2014. No stranger to the Rams, Flores played for Mobile from 2006-09 and served as a volunteer assistant during the 2010 season. During his time with the Rams, Flores appeared in 66 games, notching four goals and eight assists. The Rams advanced to the NAIA National Tournament his final three years as a player, including a trip to the Round of 8 in 2008. The Rams also won the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship in 2008 and 2009. In 2010, when he served on the coaching staff, UMobile won the Southern States Athletic Conference Championship and advanced to the Round of 4 at the NAIA National Tournament. Flores graduated from UMobile in 2010, earning his bachelor’s degree in HPES with a concentration in coaching and a minor in psychology. He has his USSF “C” license and USSF Youth license, along with his NSCAA National Diploma and NSCAA Director of Coaching Diploma. After leaving UMobile, Flores coached men’s soccer at Fairhope and Murphy HS, and is in his third year as director of coaching for the Daphne Strike Soccer Club. He and his wife, Cheryl, live in Daphne, Ala. Cheryl, a former women’s soccer player at the University of Mobile, is currently coaching women’s soccer at UMS-Wright.
