Coach Campbell spends most of his time coaching and mentoring players with his wife and assistant, Amber, by his side. He is actively involved in USA Volleyball through Club Bomba, a group of traveling volleyball teams. Campbell has earned both IMPACT and CAP I Certification.
Assistant Coach: Amber Campbell Amber Campbell, who graduated from the University of the Cumberlands in 2004 with a degree in public health, is really an assistant coach in name only. Her various duties indicate an involvement level usually reserved for head coaches. Campbell is actively involved in planning and coordinating practices, while she also designs and implements the weight training program for the team. She works closely with the team's setters during games and practices, and joins with husband and head coach Jon Campbell for game management and overseeing statisticians. Campbell adds 9 seasons of head coaching experience to this husband-and-wife duo and has committed to training life skills and developing good character in players while improving their volleyball ability. She works through USA Volleyball where she has attained IMPACT and CAP I certification. Since moving to Mobile in 2005, Campbell has become actively involved in the Gulf Coast chapter of USA Volleyball through Club Bomba, a local volleyball club with teams ages 10-18. She also conducts a Training Team Program that is designed to develop players that are unable to travel with club volleyball. The Campbells welcomed their first child, Jovie Nicole Campbell, into the world in June of 2008.

The University of Mobile volleyball team will enter its fifth season of competition in 2009 with 108 victories and back-toback trips to the NAIA National Championship already in the books. "This is a big year for us to try and turn the corner to be an elite team that consistently challenges for a spot in the Top-10 and a National Championship," Head Coach Jon Campbell said. "We've made great progress the last three years but still have room to improve." To reach that next level, the returning players will have to continue to improve, and the incoming class will need to step up to replace some departing players. Headlining the returning players is twotime NAIA All-American outside hitter Whitney Knight, and 2008 NAIA AllAmerican Paula Stilkey. They are the teams' lone seniors and will be counted on to set the tone on and off the court. "Paula and Whitney are obviously two of our go-to players, and we will need them to be at their best and lead by example on and off the court," Campbell said. Also returning are Kelly Sherling, who had 296 kills and a .307 attack percentage, and Cassy Johnson, who was second on the team with 121 blocks last year. Gone from the squad are Nicole Stokes, DeCreisha Arrington, Syretta Baldwin, Amy Carey and Amber Presnell. Losing five key contributors means the incoming recruiting class will need to produce right away. The six signees are setters Vanessa Rodriguez and Melody Tenney, outside hitters Sarah Scott and Heather Schierer, setter/defensive specialist Courtney Fenwick, and middle blocker Blaire Fowler. Tenney is a transfer from Warner University, where she led the team with 512 assists and 58 aces. "After losing both setters from last year, we will need Melody, Courtney and Vanessa to step up, and I think they have the skill set to keep this offense running
and even allow us to do some new things," Campbell said. "Melody has the ability to jump set which will allow us to run a faster offense, Courtney is very smart and quick, while Vanessa's strength to push the other two makes everyone better." "Sarah is very good at varying her attack and is a crafty hitter, Heather is a strong six-rotation player who will fight for the libero spot right away, and Blaire brings a lot of energy and will challenge for court time early on," Campbell said. Waiting for the returning and incoming players is a schedule, which features 31 matches overall, seven home matches, and four tournaments. The team will begin play at the SCAD Tournament August 28-29, open Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play Sept. 9 at Spring Hill, and host their first home match Sept. 15 versus Southern University at New Orleans. Georgetown College, whom Mobile plays twice, and Lindenwood both finished 2008 in the NAIA Top-10, while Lubbock Christian, Lee University, Embry-Riddle and Union all finished in the Top-25 or received votes. "Early on it was hard to get a good schedule, but as we've continued to win, we've have been able to add more and more top opponents, and I think this is our most competitive schedule yet," Campbell said. "And that's the way we want it: To be the best you have to beat the best, and we now have that chance." A home-and-away series with NCAA II University of West Florida, and matches with very solid Freed-Hardeman, Campbellsville, SCAD and Loyola add to the list of tough matchups. "Georgetown and Lubbock were both at nationals last year and will give us a good gauge as to where we are," Campbell said. "Adding schools like Lindenwood, West Florida, FreedHardeman, Campbellsville and SCAD on
to that will really push our girls to get better." While all of the tough non-conference schools are great to play and measure up with, conference play is still crucial. With direct qualification in place, the Lady Rams need to win the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament to earn a bid to nationals, and to their advantage the tourney is at home this year. "Just like we did in 2008, we have to take care of business in conference before we can worry about winning a national title," Campbell said. "Loyola continues to get stronger and stronger, while Belhaven and Spring Hill are improving, so it is no sure thing. We certainly are looking forward to having the GCAC tournament on our court."

The 2008 season saw the University of Mobile volleyball team pick up its third straight 30-win season, 34-5, and advance to the NAIA National Tournament for the second straight year.
"When we started the program in 2005, we set our sights on being a National Championship contender, and we moved another step closer in 2008," Head Coach Jon Campbell said.
Mobile has quickly turned into a force to be reckoned with, going 10119 over the last three years after a 713 mark in 2005's inaugural campaign.
The season began with five straight shutouts and 18 consecutive victories, before a five-set loss at NCAA II West Florida on October 7th.
The season also saw Mobile climb into the Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 Poll for the first time in school history, climbing as high as No. 18 and staying in the poll for the final 10 weeks.
"We had a great start to the year, and West Florida was the best team we played in that stretch. Beating them would've been good, but losing brought out a hunger to win that we hadn't seen all season," Campbell said. Mobile bounced back nicely, going 12-2 after the loss to close out the regular season. The Lady Rams then headed into the GCAC Tournament, needing to win the title to pick up a bid to nationals. Mobile, while dominating the GCAC in the regular season the past two years, had yet to win the conference championship. The team rose to the occasion and beat Dillard and Loyola in straight-sets. "Before you can even think about being a national title contender, you have to take care of business in your own conference, and the team won the tournament with authority," Campbell said. For their efforts, the Lady Rams got to host Webber International in a 2008 NAIA National
Championships Opening Round Match. Mobile took momentum with a 25-12 victory in the first game and then held on for 25-22 and 30-28 wins to take the match and advance to Sioux Falls, Iowa for the rest of the tournament. In pool play at the 29th Annual NAIA Volleyball National Championship, Mobile drew perennial powers Azusa Pacific and Columbia College, who had combined for 79 victories in National Tournament play. Mobile dropped a 1-3 decision to Columbia and a 0-3 match to Azusa before rebounding with a 3-2 win over Dordt to close out the tournament. "We were disappointed with how we started, but it was nice to close with a victory, and we were able to see what kind of competition stands between us and our goal of being national champs," Campbell said. To cap the season, the Lady Rams racked up several awards. Whitney Knight was named 3rd-Team NAIA All-American after racking up 448 kills and 365 digs, and Paula Stilkey was named Honorable Mention NAIA All-American thanks to 319 kills, 276 digs and 132 blocks. Knight also garnered GCAC Player of the Year honors for the second straight year. Stilkey, Nicole Stokes, Syretta Baldwin and DeCreisha Arrington joined Knight as 1st-Team All-GCAC members. Amber Presnell, Stilkey, Knight and Baldwin were named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes. "It was great to see our student-athletes honored for their hard work on and off the court. Their education will carry them farther than volleyball ever will," Campbell said.
