The Old City of Jerusalem - South Western Corner Why the Old City of Jerusalem? Jerusalem has a very long and interesting history as one of the oldest cities in the world. I was drawn to this city initially due to its religious significance to the Muslim, Jewish and Christian faiths. In all three religions, Jerusalem has been considered holy and this in turn has led to significant conflict for the ownership of the city. Currently, both Israel and Palestine claim Jerusalem as their capital city; while Israel maintains its primary governmental institutions in Jerusalem, Palestine ultimately views the city as their seat of power regardless. Neither claim has been widely recognised internationally.
825m
Why this Particular Section of Jerusalem? I initially chose this particular section of Jerusalem due to its inclusion of all of the primary religious and historical structures of Jerusalem’s old city, including: The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Tower of David, St. Jame’s Cathedral Church, Instanbuli Synagogue, The Wailing Wall, Al-Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock. In addition to this, the section includes a good portion of the old, surrounding city wall and significant portions of all four quarters: Armenian, Jewish, Christian and Muslim.
Why 825 x 825 Metres? The decision to increase the area of study for the figure-ground was made based on the intention of including both the Tower of David, old city wall and part of Dome of the Rock. Had the initial 750m x 750m area been strictly followed, the figure ground would have had to sacrifice the Dome of the Rock completely, a very significant Muslim structure that is important to the Old city as a whole. (Note: The Scale model only deals with a 750m x 750m section to stay consistent with other students)

Site Analysis: Location Plan Why Off the Coast of Karratha? “Australia should plan for a new city, like a Gold Coast of the west, to cope with the population boom predicted by 2050. The country has the resources to accommodate a projected 35 million people, but Australians will have to get smarter about where and how they live. The rainfall and agriculture of the Pilbara and the Kimberley make it suitable for more intensive development in the future.

Site Analysis: Proposed Ocean Links Searipple Passage Currently this passage is completely uncharted and as a result, cannot be safely travelled by any sized craft. However, it could be speculated that there is opportunity in the future for the passage to be charted and made appropriately safe for the passage of smaller vessels and potential hovercrafts.
Small Non-Commercial Passenger Hovercrafts Boats
Small Leisure Crafts
Flying Foam Passage This passage has already been charted, however, the conditions within the pass are less than desirable and as such will only permit the passage of vessels no bigger than a tug boat. In the future, it could potentially serve as a passenger link between Dampier and the island in the event that safety can be improved.

Mermaid Sound Currently the safest avenue of transport. The waters have been charted and frequently serve for the transport of goods in and out of Dampier. This link could potentially serve as the main passage to transport goods to and from the island in the future.

Jerusalem - Division of Density and Randomness
The Elements of Nature - Forming Logical Districts
Beginning with the Old City of Jerusalem as a framework, the Island of Elements aims to recreate the spirituality and beauty of Jerusalem in a more contextually appropriate way for the site in Karratha. The new island city aims to achieve this spirituality by drawing inspiration from the inherent beauty of the natural and human elements of the world instead of the religious aspects that exist as a central spiritual force within Jerusalem.
