ME
All about me I love public space: high functioning, multi-modal, safe, active, equitable, culturally aware, and diverse urban environments. I enjoy solving complex problems with whatever tools I can find. Every single day I get to be creative in finding new ways to learn, to facilitate, and to communicate. Ask about urban design on Mars! I wrote my graduate thesis on Martian settlements, their predictive impacts to individual and societal wellbeing, and ways we can mitigate these impacts through the built environment. When I am not designing, I am backpacking, cross-country cycling, performing music, songwriting, and learning to write a graphic novel.
Hi! I’m Donny.

Pioneer Square Street Concept Plans Seattle, WA 2016 Framework Pioneer Square, Seattle’s oldest neighborhood, is a historic district with a rich architectural history. An influx of new public and private projects threaten to overburden sidewalks, streets, and public spaces that are currently inadequate and incongruous. Working with the Alliance for Pioneer Square and SDOT, we were tasked to produce design guidelines and street concepts to be amended into the SDOT Right of Way Manual. These guidelines seek to ensure continuity, character, and accessibility throughout the neighborhood.
Transportation Center
Booming Development
Documenting Public Space
Pioneer Square is a dense multi-modal hub, connecting ferry, heavy rail, light-rail, streetcar, bus, and bike.
As Seattle booms, the waterfront redevelopment and other developments will drastically change the neighborhood.
Using a data collection app (fulcrum), I spent 3-months inventorying and creating a GIS database of 80+ physical and social attributes of the public realm. ca

The ULI Hines Competition is an annual, 2-week long, interdisciplinary student design competition. For the 2016 competition, the challenge was to propose a comprehensive redevelopment strategy for a sub-area in Atlanta’s Midtown district characterized by isolated office towers, swaths of surface parking, and small cultural institutions. The site was bordered by the 75/85 highway connector and Georgia Tech to the East and an emerging high-tech incubator to the North.

Island County consists of two idyllic rural Islands in the Puget Sound. This plan provides the vision and prioritization for bike, pedestrian, kayak, and equestrian networks, as well as public shoreline improvements. My role has been to design and facilitate an objective, datadriven process to complement the more traditional qualitative process the county is accustomed to. The project is ongoing (through 2017), and these pages represent a preliminary process I developed for the GIS analysis of the bicycle network based on components of traffic stress, demographics, and user demand.

Prioritization Metrics
Using factors such as speed limit and shoulder width, a predictive measure of LTS can be generated for each segment.
Using census and ACS data allows a broader understanding of populations spread across a large county.
Using user generated route data (predominantly Strava) provides understanding of current system demand.
Using an algorithm based on LTS, user demand, and demographics, the output provides guidance on network priorities.

Downtown Columbia Redevelopment Columbia, MD 2015 Design Collective MD ASLA Merit Award The slender promenade and its adjacent mixed-use developments are the initial effort to urbanize a growing Baltimore and DC suburb. In addition to increasing residential density, the project creates a civic town center at the heart of the community. This design is a confluence of water, play, and art, while accommodating active retail and streetscape corridors. I was heavily involved in the public art integration, site design, construction drawings, and sub-consultant coordination.
Integrating Stormwater Stormwater collection, filtration, and storage facilities were integrated throughout the site.

STREETSCAPE AND LINEAR GREEN
The layered landscape captures, cleans and infiltrates stormwater. Moving water on the street is captured by rainwater planters at the back of curbs. Swales and planting strips capture stormwater within the promenade where vibrant, native planting also serves to buffer the playground from the adjacent streetscape. DOWNTOWN COLUMBIA

PARCEL C1 - WORKING SKETCHUP MODEL
Site constraints and building development on Parcel C1 resulted in a triangular-shaped amenity courtyard. An elliptical pool resolves courtyard geometries and provides dramatic views from the clubhouse. A boomerang-shaped wall provides privacy for sunbathers and serves as a dramatic architectural element extending along the clubhouse corridor. DOWNTOWN COLUMBIA

Seattle, WA 2016 Framework How do you make public engagement engaging? Funded through a Department of Neighborhoods grant for the First Hill Improvement Association, we were tasked to activate underutilized public spaces in this historic Seattle community. Three successful events were held: First Hill Fido Contest (now an annual event), First Hill Trivia, and First Hill 1940’s Street Games. The events drew over a hundred people including families, toddlers, hip youngsters, and residents of nearby retirement homes, creating a unique forum to learn from the community and keep them informed about ongoing projects.

Morrill Meadows Park Kent, WA 2017 MacLeod Reckord This project is a public-private partnership intent on locating a new YMCA in a public park. As design lead on the project, I have functioned as an intermediary between the interests of the YMCA, the parks department, and the larger public. Balancing those interests has required a highly iterative process of negotiation and visioning. The thrust of the design is to 1) create a symbiotic relationship between YMCA and park, 2) preserve the ecology and spirit of the existing park, and 3) amp up play and events programming to create a destination public space.
Draw, Scribble, Trace, Crumple Though the finished products are often clean and digital, my process is always sketchy, smudgy, and iterative. 1/3 of Parking Lot

Orientation: The lobby entry is the “face” of the building. As shown, it orients towards a parking lot. Access: Predominant pedestrian circulation and drop-off will be from the south while the entry is oriented east. Continuity: The location and shape of covered play protrudes into the public open space, reducing the effectiveness of a “gracious” building entry.

Orientation: Lobby entry and “building face” orient towards the community/ street and drop-off. Access: There are no pinch-points. Tapered edges ensure a free-flow of people across the entry plaza and promenade. Continuity: The covered play is tapered to open up the building entry while funneling traffic along the E-W promenade.

Water Street
Initially a “repaving” project, we developed an argument based on necessary infrastructure improvements to persuade the city to pursue a full design-out. Based on these simple diagrams, the city requested and received and additional $1 million for streetscape improvements. CONCEPT A: TABLED CONCRETE PARKING LOT STREET REPAVING
Port Townsend, WA 2017 MacLeod Reckord Port Townsend is a National Historic District along the Puget Sound. The unique location is highlighted by a beach that runs the length of the downtown. However, the waterfront main street (Water St) is a placeless car-topia with beach access limited to street-end parking lots. As lead designer, I relied on quick sketches and simple diagrams to illustrate how we could make the main street / street-to-beach accessible and activated.

Downtown Improvement Plan Albany, WI 2013 SAA Design Group Turn and face the water! The Downtown Improvement Plan is a coordinated vision to promote infill, preserve character, increase walkability, and maximize public access along the pristine Sugar River. It is part of a long-term effort to revive a struggling local economy by making Albany a regional tourism destination.
