ICELANDIC OASIS BEE BREEDERS COMPETITION

As visitors arrive at Vogafjos restaurant & greenhouse, the building takes shape along the hillside. The silhouette of the building drapes gracefully down the hillside flowing naturally with the topography. The greenhouse and restaurant blend harmoniously as if two gabbled hills met in the middle. This blending is highlighted by the restaurant’s wood facade, which interlocks with the greenhouse’s glass to create a blend of materiality within the form. This use of materiality acts as an outward diagram for the program. The blending of the restaurant and greenhouse programs allows two programmatic types (most often separated) to be married as one. This creates an authentic farm-to-table experience that is understood visually and aromatically throughout the interior, genuinely connecting the farm to the table. Nature is pulled into the building by the greenhouse, while the restaurant’s classic gable construction acts as a frame for viewing Iceland’s picturesque landscape.

KNOWLEDGE VEIL Oak Park Library

Walking along in a suburb of Chicago, the library appears as a veil draped across a street corner. As if pulling back the corner of a book, visitors discreetly enter and then disappear from the outside world. The corner site allows greater access to the library, while leaving a prominent and proud mark on the neighborhood it inhabits. Entering the courtyard transports readers to a boundless and beckoning world of knowledge. The interior courtyard allows visitors to see virtually every part of the library no matter where they stand. This not only provides transparency and visibility to multiple spaces throughout the library, but also serves as an invitation to explore. The bookshelves act as a differentiation of spaces hiding private rooms, such as bathrooms and study rooms, as well as, vertical circulation. The building draws the visitors inside, providing a refuge from the outside world, like a book allows its reader to escape the everyday reality of life.

SPRING 2021

EARTHLY AWAKEN SWITCH COMPETITION

Hiking up the expansive highland, the wellness center does not appear to be sitting on the landscape itself; instead, it gently emerges from the valley as if Mother Nature intentionally cultivated the structure from the earth. The form replicates a traditional bathhouse, providing a meaningful place for cleansing the mind and body as it flows out of the topography from which it was built. As visitors enter the building’s encompassing grounds, they sense a feeling of harmony with the earth and its life forces, where the boundaries between self and the rest of nature are blurred. A deep understanding of peace and connectedness with nature pervades one’s consciousness. The emerging form allows for the natural gift of the surrounding landscape to be seen from within and around the wellness retreat, thus centering biophilic design as the natural remedy for the body and mind.

PROCESS-CORE NOHO Design Museum

Design is not just about the final product; it is also about capturing the artist’s journey through the creative process. The NOHO Design Museum strives to highlight the designer’s process as a core function of the building itself. As visitors traverse the vertical circulation of the museum’s central tower, they encounter the various stages of the design process of the items they are about to view. The building floors are staggered, double-height spaces to allow visitors to observe the objects from various viewpoints above and below. This provides the visitors with unique perspectives rarely seen in a traditional museum. The facade allows ambient light to flood the galleries while focusing all the attention on the works themselves. The experience gives the visitor a rare glimpse through the designer’s eye, allowing one to see not only the object itself but the culmination of the creative process.

EDEN INITIATIVE 120 HOURS COMPETITION

Fourteen billion pounds of trash, most of it plastic, is carelessly dumped in the world’s oceans every year. The enormity of this waste problem requires an equally scaled solution. The Eden Initiative is a waste to energy plant that seeks to converge and address two of the greatest challenges confronting mankind today—pollution of our oceans and pollution of our atmosphere. The form gives way to combining a fluid dynamic structure with a tower-like presence that allows one to see for kilometers. The system gathers and consumes tons of trash every hour with the massive intake on the structure’s front. In the building’s belly, waste is burned, and energy is produced in the form of hot gases used to heat water, produce steam, and turn a turbine that generates electricity. As envisioned, the building would be self-supported with trash cleansed from the sea. The height symbolizes the scale of the issue as it floats from port city to port city, inspiring people to do their part by reversing mankind’s abuse of our most precious asset, planet earth.

SACHS A TANGENT...

TOM SACHS EXP.

In Fall 2020, the artwork “Broken Record” was produced for the “I.S.R.U. Dome” challenge as part of a collection of work organized by Tom Sachs and his studio. Similar to a broken record, the dome’s design creates a repeating pattern. The project’s concept is a double entendre of a broken record that repeats itself, similar to the parts in which the dome is constructed. “Broken Record” was published alongside other works in a book produced by the studio. This project gave way to a new task of testing shoes for Nike and Tom Sachs. Being given the name “Wear tester,” the task was to test the shoes over a period of 3 months and produce artwork based on the experience. An architectural model was crafted as a collection of work to display where the shoes had traveled. The work was displayed at Rockefeller Center’s Gallery in the “Endurance” Exhibition.
