PERSONAL COLLAGE
My interest in art and design began in childhood. From an early age inspiration seemed to surround me. Whether it was the times I spent in my uncle’s galleries or the times I was traveling with my family, art and design always seemed to be present. I have been lucky enough to have endless support and motivation from both family and friends. My family has always had strong ties to the New Zealand art world and as a result gave me my earliest inspiration. One of my uncle owns galleries, the other a framing business and my grandparents restore paintings. Between the four of them I have been surrounded by art and design from my youth. As a child, my family traveled frequently. I grew up in America, however I was born in Australia, and my family is originally from New Zealand. I had the opportunity to live in New Zealand for 18 months as a pre teen and I will always consider myself a New Zealander as well as an American. My experience living in different countries has helped define me as a person as well as a designer.
In addition to living in mutliple places, I had the privilege of traveling with my family for pleasure. On these trips we would often go to museums, monuments and any other sights of interest. From a young age I was introduced to all types of art and architecture. As I traveled, I learned, taking in every moment and every detail I could retain. It was not just learning about the art that interested me; how they built, the way they lived, why they lived that way, became the prevailing questions in my mind. These trips always filled me with excitement,v the same excitement I now feel while designing. I cannot definitively pick the moment when I said I wanted to be a designer, but I do know the influences that drove me to this choice. My family. After graduation I plan on continuing my education and earning a Bachelor’s degree in interior design. I look forward to furthering my understanding of people and how we live.

PROGRAM: Using 1 platform, 5 walls, 2 reflection pools, 1 monolith, 8 columns, 5 stairs and 1 roof, the goal is to design a pavilion made for meditation and relaxation. The layout promotes “the journey”, split into 3 stages. The first stage, the stairs intersect the pool as if emerging from the water. After the stairs is the long corridor, which creates a curiosity about what is to come. The final stage, the arrival, represents the resolution and the culmination of the journey.
