Matthew Ricarte
Architecture Undergraduate + Artist based in Metro Manila, Philippines
Hello, I’m Matthew. I thrive on the ethos of ‘radical exploration’, and am committed to pushing the boundaries of conventional design. Throughout the years, I have become an adaptive learner of multiple sets of skills. Seeking a multidisciplinary approach has not only expanded my creative pursuits but has also fundamentally transformed how I approach architectural design. I firmly believe that each project is an opportunity to evolve and synthesize ideas!

Tektonik Tower_ Roxas Boulevard, Manila, Philippines Year: 2023 Designers: Ricarte, M.
Set in the Year 2050, Tektonik Tower explores a novel frontier: one where a skyscraper serves as a dynamic fusion of interactive museums and artist studios. It seeks to create an “artistic nexus” where the past, present, and future of Filipino Art and Culture converge.

3 Makiling Botanical Garden [MBG] Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines Year: 2023 Designers: Ricarte, M. | Abella, S. | De Roña, Z. | Goño, R.
The primary problem of the current MBG is the lack of interest for visitors to visit the site in its current dilapidated state. Factors that contribute to its neglected state, such as overgrown paths and trails, worn-down facilities and activity areas, and a lack of personnel to manage the garden. The site’s inaccessibility in mobility and transportation options make it difficult to access the gardens from other cities. With this, a redevelopment was truly necessary.

3 InterDouglas House_
Harbor Springs, Michigan, U.S.A. Year: 2022 Designers: Ricarte, M. | De Roña, Z.
InterDouglas House is a response to an issue in the Douglas House where the interior is overpowered, and it has lost its sense of intimacy. “What if we can reverse the situation and bring the inside out?” was the question we imposed, which led to the introduction of 3 new programs: a courtyard, planetarium, and observatory. While the 3 provide a sense of enclosure, these bring out the interiority of natural exterior spaces. They serve as a temporary boundary between internal (home) and external forces (nature).

A full sphere is incorporated as the Planetarium to fully captivate visitors once they walk in. A ramp wraps around the sphere’s lower half for visitor access. The observatory at the top-most floor of the house is placed in such a way that no light would obstruct the telescope’s view.
