OregonBILDS - Hope Loop Design/Build of an Affordable, High-Performance House Eugene, Oregon

OregonBilds is the University of Oregon’s new design/build program for affordable, high-performance housing.. Our studio worked on the conceptual design and design development phases, and by the end of term reached construction documents and permit submittal. The aim was to design an approximately 1200 SF house for a lot in West Eugene given to the program by one of our partners. Throughout the whole term, all 14 students in the studio worked as a comprehensive team designing one house, a very different experience from the normal studio culture. Personally, one of my favorite aspects of the project was the opportunity to design a variety of small details throughout the house, from how to put together the stairs to what the best/most efficient wall assembly would be.

Vicenza Civic Auditorium A New Heart for the Palladian City Vicenza, Veneto, Italy

Vicenza sits at the bottom of the Monte Berico hills at the edge of Northern Italy’s Po Valley. A settlement since the Roman Empire, Vicenza is home to a host of wonderful medevial and Renaissance architecture. Especially that of Andrea Palladio, including the Basillica Palladiana at the heart of the city. However the context that the Basillica sits in is problematic. One of the four main piazzae is empty and barren, and the building attached to the Basillica’s eastern side is a stoic, lifeless late-Baroque shell housing a boring modern block. Recent renovations to the courtyard between the two buildings have made the site even more scattered. The problem posed for this studio was then to create a new civic building containing an auditorium, library, and meeting spaces to bring more people to the site. Additionally, priority was put on giving the building a real civic presence and repairing the public spaces it would enfront.

Center for Russian Icons Bringing Old World Relics to the Pearl District Portland, Oregon

ICONS. The Pearl District. Who would think of these two things together? And yet that was the goal: to create a new museum and school on an infill lot near I-405 to preserve Orthodox Christian iconography and the craft + art that goes into creating them. How to make a signature building that also stands at remove from the hustle of the city around it and isolated from the noise of the interstate? What kind of building would result from trying to make the best possible home for these icons, yet out of modern materials and with modern building techniques? What resulted was a modern, urban monastery organized around two courtyards, one outer to screen the outside, one inner to create a heart to the campus. Screens started to appear throughout the building, blocking some, but not all of the exterior light from reaching the fragile and sacred icons. Two Ls, one for the museum and one for the school of iconography.
