Adoration (1951, arr. 2020) for mixed dectet for Antoine Clark and the McConnell Arts Center Chamber Orchestra This late work by Florence B. Price (1887-1953), originally for organ, demonstrates the composer’s craft and lyricism. Published originally in The Organ Portfolio, in December 1951, it is one of several short organ works she composed in the last years of her life, several of which were published by the Lorenz Corporation, and later allowed to lapse into public domain. While clearly a practical piece for use by church organists as a prelude, Adoration features a meditative, flowing approach to melody and a harmonic language that holds the interest of listener and musician alike, and its intimacy transfers well to the chamber music medium. Instrumentation: Flute Violin 1 Oboe Violin 2 Viola Clarinet in Bb Violoncello Bassoon Contrabass Horn in F Dr. Matthew C. Saunders has taught music from kindergarten to college in styles from madrigal to mariachi, and strives to make beautiful music for and with captivating people. He is always up for a few hands of euchre or a good game of chess, likely winning the former and losing the latter. Dr. Saunders is Professor of Music and music department chair at Lakeland Community College, where he directs the Lakeland Civic Orchestra.
