COLUMN: A DESIGN ENQUIRY INTO A PERFORMATIVE ORDER FOR A CEREMONIAL SPACE. (KADK, CITA) Thesis Project, 2014 Fabrication | secular ceremonial space | computational design Teachers: Martin Tamke, Mette Ramsgaard Thomsen, Phil Ayres and Paul Nicolai VELUX DAGSLYSLEGAT (2014) “The project illustrates an inspiring and insightful process where architecture and lighting design formally unite and create new potentials.” DURAVITPRISEN (2014) “His well-researched and referenced project shows finally an astonishing width and depth: a depth in the detailed investigation and a width, that engages with architectural questions on atmospheric, technological, social and cultural level.
In the old temples of Greece and Rome, the column was not only used as a highly structural element, it also allowed a freer planning of space and allowed light to enter spaces in a new way. In many examples, the column helps create something intangible, an atmosphere in the space. The aim of this project was to develop a range of a contemporary order of columns that may perform according to light and space making functions. As a setting for further development of the project, I investigated how the column might be deployed in a secular ceremonial space. A ceremonial space devoid of religious doctrine - with only social, cultural, constitutional and matterof-course properties embedded in its design.
[...] This synthesis allows Mattias most importantly to create a convincing and innovative proposal with intriguing spaces and atmosphere. Starting in research the project creates finally a very personal manifestation in a truly ceremonial space.”

THE SOUND - STRATEGIES FOR A FUTURE MONUMENT ON SALTHOLM (KADK, CITA) Individual Project 2013 Teacher: Martin Tamke, Mette Ramsgaard Thomsen, Paul Nicholas, Phil Ayres Exhibited and published for the Beijing Architectural Biennale 2013. The project is a speculation on how emerging technologies in robotics and material science can establish ecologies to handle the challenges of climate change. Here a monument is proposed for Copenhagen’s flat neighbour island Saltholm. This is expected to disappear under the raising water levels over the next 50 years. Its limestone filled ground, collected rainwater and the energy from the continuously blowing wind are the
foundation for a society of robots. These interact in order to refine the raw matter into 3d printed structures, shaped in a constant computational loop to engage with the everlasting wind. The created acoustic effects will be a reminder of the island, when this since long have been immersed under sea-level, while the new monument provides a sanctuary for humans.
