A city within the City |

Contemporary work practices have a relational dynamism that implies creating spatial complexity in its sites and rethinking consolidated typologies. Increased reliance on external spaces (including homes), flexible use of environments, multiplication and diversification of spaces of relationship and collaboration are just a few of the new requests brought on by workers and companies.

In recent years, the ideal habitat of an office seems to want to compare itself to almost an entire city, rather than with a single activity: organic, stratified, incremental in space and adaptive and in the times that pass through and transform it.

In the fit-out project for the new NTT Data headquarters in Milan, articulated in 16, 1000 square meter floors, the core principle is making each floor unique in layout, materials and furnishing, in order to recreate the complexity of urban life inside the building. Spaces and layouts of the floors echo typically urban structures and situations, that by nature and character generate indeterminate relationships: squares, stairways, balconies, courtyards.

Reflecting the landscape |

Located not far away from the coastline of Gioia Tauro in the region of Calabria is located the old waste-to-energy plant that has become out dated and inefficient. The aim of the competition is to create a new plant that will initially collaborate with the existing one and in time replace it while it’s being dismantled.

Being the plot sorrounded by agricultural land and set on a plane, the architectural proposal aspires to create a building able to dialogue with its context, blending in with the materials of the sorrounding landscape: the earth, olive trees, vignards and the sky.

To achieve this goal, the massive volumes that contain the machinery are given order stepping them back from each other and making them more light as they get taller towards the sky. A gentle slope is created to hide the base level of the building reducing its perceived height and at the same time conceiling the infrastructure on which the trucks circulate.

The volumes are designed with two different skins: the exterior one is like a see trhough metal courtain with different patterns that make the building shine and vibrate with games of light and shadow; the interior one, made of alucobond panels colored according to the elements sorrounding each facade.

Recycling cities |

Popular historic hall from the 1970s onwards, the former cinema-theater Maestoso will become a sports complex.

The restoration, which will be completed by spring 2022, is an initiative of owner of the property Italcine, while the management will be entrusted to Virgin Active.

The new function that will be installed will have a positive impact on the neighborhood, offering new activities and opportunities for aggregation, and on the city.

While maintaining the perimeter and volume of the existing building with its 1930s facade, the redevelopment, about 5000 square meters in total, aims to clarify the relationships between the parts that make up the building complex by assigning specific roles to the existing volumes: the entrance volume is the point of contact with the city and the historical memory, the great hall is the place of the building’s rebirth. The project also intends to encourage the dialogue with the outside by opening the facades with large windows that make the internal activities visible, and through a roof covered with glass tiles, which reflects the light, and makes the presence within the urban fabric special.

The marble that once adorned the façade on Corso Lodi will be reproduced on the entrance volume alongside with surfaces in brass strips, while large arched openings with brass inserts will be created on the classroom volume.

Industrial building, prototype, showcase |

On the outskirts of Madrid, within Pinto’s industrial pentagon a new factory is raising made out of steel, concrete and glass: the Ensamble Fabrica Manufacturing Workshop.

The space is defined by very simple and precise elements wrapped by a fifteen meter high steel frame, enveloping the plot and the construction with different claddings in order to obtain different levels of visual permeability. The envelope creates two different enviroments within the site: a large courtyard and the industrial building.

The building itself is very minimalistic, yet a sofisticated artifact. In fact, it is a one nave space spanning over eighty meters, rythmed by galvanized steel columns. At the notrhern side of the building is located a two story housing module with only two glass openings on the east and west facade. On top of the module and of each column is placed a three meter tall galvanized steel truss, spanning eighteen meeters wide.

The purpose of this new building is to realize prefab architectonic elements that will then be shipped around the world by container. All the components for future buildings will be realized by robots.

What makes this project really valuble is that each element that composes the Ensamble Fabrica is a prototype and they are the same pre-fab elements that will then be built again and again by robotic manufacture.

A tale of two movements |

Adagio - Vivace expresses a new iconography for the Rade waterfront, evoking and reinterpreting the narrative richness visible in the images portraying the banks before the late XIX century and XX century restructuring. A new rich range of situations is grounded in a dialectic relationship between the ground of the city - which is the place marked by continuity and regularity - and the water plane, a surface endlessly surrendering to the metamorphosis of ephemeral events.

ADAGIO and VIVACE are two different spatial configurations while they also are two different ways to live the space of the roadstead, according to a redefined topography.

Adagio is the first movement: a unitary space, redefining the bank on the upper level of the city, in continuity with the built fabric. It is marked by a homogeneous surface - a monochromatic and mineral band of a constant width of 42m, unrolling all along the roadstead, planted with a regular system of four tree rows.

Vivace, the second movement: it is a wooden deck, laying at a lower level, in constant contact with the water. It twists to accommodate diverse programs and activities, re-designing the bank profile.

A complementary landscape to the city |

While defining the forms of inhabiting, “an embryonic alternative and/or complementary settlement-landscape model” emerged, identified by the term Slow Territory or Slow Landscape, distinguishing itself to more dynamic and fast environments.

The thesis wants to explore the possibilities of regeneration of Slow Landscapes offered by the planning of a new cycle path, which crosses northern Italy, extending from Verona to Florence. In specific the project takes place in a territorial section from Peschiera del Garda and Mantova, where the cycle path crosses through Mincio River’s landscape.

Secondly, the recent launch of the contest Cammini e Percorsi from the Italian State Property Office, in which several state-owned real estates are given to private individuals. The thesis project is first of all a description and exploration of a territory at risk endowed with a wealth of unexpressed potential. In the project vision the design of a linear river park offers a new idea of landscape able to restore unity to the territorial dimension. To this central system refers a capillary network of itineraries and a succession of cities of villages, portions of territory in which a new urbanization is defined by a density of new common services, paths for sustainable mobility and new activities related to the specificities of the landscape, its traditions and local knowledge.

It’s no longer time to build Pyramids |

Following a brief historical overview, which compares two of the most important architectural paradigms on the factor of time defined in the permanent and temporary dichotomy, initiates a discussion, still unexplored and of a contemporary nature, regarding the biodegradability of materials used in architecture. This subject, fascinating and controversial to the eyes of the architect, is discussed through the scientific study of a new material, which could offer a surprising future. We are referring to an organic material, denominated by the researchers that first explored its characteristics, Mycelium Brick. The brick, that can be defined as a composite material, is the result of an extraordinary process of manufacture where mycelium, the vegetative part of the mushroom, is the main actor. The independence from electric energy and the absence of pollutant products are very important aspects to reach sustainability. The feedstock is in fact totally biodegradable and production doesn’t release carbon in the atmosphere. Secondly the relatively easy way with which this material can be realized and the low cost of the manufacturing process, means that we can consider the brick as a very innovative material in times of economic sterility.
