Writer Sarah Thornton said it best, “Artforum is to art what Vogue is to fashion.” Published 10 times per year with a massive summer issue that spans the sweltering months of June, July, and August, Artforum is the premiere international magazine for contemporary art. Founded by John P. Irwin, Jr. in 1962, Artforum has been a decisive voice in its field since. Featuring many different artists each issue, Artforum dives into their lives with interviews, portfolios, and reviews of their work. In addition to features, they review many contemporary films, books and more each issue to inform the contemporary art community. Although the magazine is based in New York City, Artforum caters to many different cities and their respective art scenes. International gallery shows have and will continue to be important in the magazine. Full-page adverts for galleries are more frequent than curated conent within the magazine.

COMPARISON

PRINT It is clear that the print version of Artforum International directs the design of the web version rather than following it. Because of this, design is the forefront of the publication, both graphically and typographically. The content in the magazine is much more curated compared to the breadth of content in the website. There is an explicit flow of content

from the columns to the features and then the gallery reviews. On the typographic side, Artforum for the majority of the time uses the typefaces Franklin Gothic and Garamond for everything. Below is a word mapping that visualizes attributes and hierarchy of elements based on size.

the article headline is prominent in the print version with clear objectives.

the table of contents is unique to the magazine because of the affordances in print media.

ads take up more than 3/4ths of the magazine. and are symbolic to the publication.

WEB The Artforum aims to be a broad resource for many different needs. The amount of content is truly overwhelming: archives of every magazine since the 1960s, diaries, gallery guides, and more. In addition, the affordances of web allow artforum.com to have video, up-to-date news, interaction with audiences, and all without limitations in the quantity of con-

because the web is a dynamic medium, they are able to keep it up-to-date with news.

ads take up less space on artforum.com, and have a dedicated sidebar on every page.

TYPOGRAPHIC ATTRIBUTES

PRINT

HEADLINES Font: Franklin Gothic Size: 24 pt, 72 pt

The headlines change position on the page, ranging from centered to left aligned to fit within the text placed on the page. The size of the headlines vary greatly throughout the magazine due to the amount of white space available before an article begins.

BODY TEXT Font: Franklin Gothic, Garamond Size: 9 pt

The first few words of the article are bold. The style of the text stays consistent throughout all of the articles. Because of the limited page space, a smaller font is used to fit the article within the constraints of the magazine. The text throughout the magazine is left justified to make reading easier for the reader to follow due to the use of multiple columns placed next to each other, making it easier for the reader.

CAPTIONS Font: Franklin Gothic Size: 6 pt

The artist, title of work, and year the work was completed is bold to create hierarchy over the materials used in the artwork. The style of the captions stays consistent for every image. Captions are left aligned no matter where they are placed around the image. Because the magazine allows for a more creative layout with images, multiple captions may be placed next to one picture depending on the number of images on one page.

ARTFORUM

WEB

HEADLINES Font: Arial Size: 20 px, 26 px, 28 px

The headlines are always positioned at the top of the article page, left aligned with the article. Because the web has an unlimited page length, the headlines vary little throughout the articles because there is no designated white space for the title.

BODY TEXT Font: Arial Size: 13 px

The first few words of the article are bold. The style of the text stays consistent throughout all of the articles. Due to the ability of the web to change page length depending on content, a larger font is used to ease reader’s eyes while scanning the content. The text throughout the website is left aligned since the layout only allows for one column.

CAPTIONS Font: Arial Size: 11 px

The artist, title of work, and year the work was completed is bold to create hierarchy over the materials used in the artwork. The style of the captions stays consistent for every image. Captions are left aligned no matter where they are placed around the image. Because of the limited width of the website, a single picture is placed on its own within text, calling for only one caption.
