Portfolio Matthew Lo rd i n g Sel ec t ed Wo rk s
In 2018, I completed my exhausting but incredibly satisfying Bachelor s Deg ree of Architecture. With plans of commencing my master s next year, I’ve given myself a year of f to f i n a l l y c atch my b reath a n d s i mu l ta n eo u s l y s o m eh ow a f fo rd to g o tr avel i n g to c o u n tr i es I only thought existed on the back of National Geog raphic Mag azines. T hough I say it has been exhausting, the three year s of my underg raduate deg ree have brought with them some of the most rewarding and fulfilling moments of my life. I draw inspiration from a diver se ar ray of creative avenues, whether that be film, literature or fine arts and love the challenge of tr ying to come up with innovative solutions for complex and sometimes not so complex issues. When it comes to designing, I enjoy critiquing existing typologies and finding new ways to reinter pret how a space could operate and be envisioned. To me, design is bred from the chaotic, rough cong lomerate of society’s randomness, th e bu s tl i n g d en s i ty a n d tr a n s p a ren c y o f o u r bu i l t f a b r i c , th e s h i f ti n g tem p o r a l i ty o f o u r natural environment and the sprawling economic and political paradigms that subtly gover n our lives. T he most important examples of design are thus the ones that are aware of issues on multiple scales and seek innovative solutions to address them.

THE SOLAR ANALYSIS IS HEAVILY LINKED WITH THE OVERSHADOWING OF THE SURROUNDING CONTEXT OF THE LAW BUILDING. IT REVIELED THAT THE NORTH FACING FACADE WAS RECIEVING 5+ HOURS OF LIGHT BUT THE OFFICE SPACE IS LOCKINGTHE LIGHT FROM ENTERING THE ENTIRITY OF THE BUILDING. ALSO THE POSITIONING OF THE LIBRARY WAS SHOWN TO BE INADEQUITE IN UNTILISING NATURAL LIGHT THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. THEREFORE, A DESIGN DECISION TO MOVE IT TO THE NORTH WESTSIDE OF THE BUILDING WAS DECIDED UPON.

WALL LIGHT AS INDICATED THROUGH THE STUDIES ON DIALUX, THE ALL THE ROOMS SATISFY THE RELEVANT CRITERIA, MOREOVER THE BOOK SPACES MAINTAINS A LUX READING OF APPROXIMATELY 200 LUX WHILE THE INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP AREAS BOTH MAINTAIN ADEQUATE LUX READINGS OF 400 - 500 DEPENDING ON LOCATION IN THE ROOM, IT CAN THUS BE SAID THAT THIS ASPECT OF THE CRITERIA IS MET. THE IMPLEMENTATION OF VOIDS WITHIN THE SPACE FURTHERMORE ALLOWS FOR THE LIGHT TO BE TRANSMITTED BETWEEN FLOORPLATES WITH RELATIVE EASE, ALLOWING FOR THE LIGHTING THAT HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED TO BE MAXIMISED THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING. THIS IS BEST SHOWN THROUGH THE CEILING PLAN IN REGARDS TO DAYLIGHTING, THE DIALUX READING SHOWS THAT DAYLIGHTING HAS BEEN UTILISED SUFFICIENTLY TO MAINTAIN THE 200 - 500 LUX READING SET WITHIN THE CRITERIA. MOREOVER, IT IS CLEAR, THAT THROUGH THE POSITIONING OF SHADING DEVICES, THE DAYLIGHTING ENTERS THE SPACE HOWEVER DOES NOT CAUSE DISCOMFORT, APART FROM A FEW MINOR SPACES, FURTHERMORE AS HAS BEEN INDICATED IN THE DIALUX STUDIES FURTHERMORE THE CHOSEN LIGHTS WITHIN THE SPACE OFFER A LUMINOUS GLOW, THE CEILING LIGHTS ALLOW FOR THIS LIGHT TO BE TRANSMITTED EVENLY THROUGHOUT THE FLOORPLATES WHILE THE WALL LIGHTS OFFER A SECONDARY ILLUMINANCE WHILE ALSO COMPLIMENTING BUT NOT CAUSING DISCOMFORT WHEN PLACED INTO RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CEILING LIGHTS.

THROUGH THE SELECTION OF HEAVILY ACOUSTICALLY ABSORBENT MATERIALS, THE DECIBAL RATING WITHIN THE SPACE IS ACHIEVED WITH RELATIVE EASE, THE ONLY BACKGROUND NOISE THAT NEEDS TO BE CONSIDERED IS THAT OF THE AIRCONDITIONING UNIT WHICH IS DIFFUSED IN THE SPACE WITH RELATIVE EASE. MOREOVER, THE NOISE IN THE SPACE IS CONTROLLED WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PRIVATE READING AREAS WHICH ALLOW FOR THE NOISE TO BE ISOLATED IN THE SPACE. THE VOIDS DO ALLOW FOR SOME NOISE TO BE TRANSMITTED BETWEEN FLOORPLATES HOWEVER THE MAXIMUM THAT CAN BE TRAVELLED IS ONLY THROUGH ONE GIVEN THE POSITIOINING OF THE VOIDS. MOREOVER THE GROUP WORK SPACES ARE IN ISOLTATED LOCATIONS, FURTHERMORE ALLOWING FOR THE SOUND TO BE CONTAINED WITHIN THESE SPACES.

THE IMPLEMENTATION OF RELEVANT MATERIALS WITH HIGH SOUND ABSORBENT QUALITIES FURTHERMORE ALLOWS FOR THE ACOUSTICS OF THE SPACE TO BE CONTROLLED WITH RELATIVE EASE, AND GIVEN THE QUIET NATURE OF THE SPACE, THIS NOISE IS FURTHER CONTROLLED. ADDITIONALLY, THE MATERIALS CHOSEN RESIST INTRUDING NOISES IN THE SPACE. THE PROPERTIES OF THESE MATERIALS FURTHERMORE SATISFY THE REVERBERATION TIME CRITERIA AND THUS ALLOW FOR ALL COMPONENTS OF THE CRITERIA TO BE SATISFIED.
