From the Editor Sent any good postcards lately? Whether your idea of summer fun is soaking up some Spanish sun or braving the breezes in the Scottish Highlands, your holiday thoughts may turn to those stuck on the treadmill back home – and, of course you want to send them a merry greeting, telling them what a fantastic time you’re having. Or do you? The tradition of postcard sending is long and illustrious, and for well over a century holiday-makers have licked the end of their pencils and searched for the perfect phrase. These days it’s probably a darn sight easier to nip into the local internet café and reply to your emails – or even send an oh-soarticulate text. HI, M8. WTHR BRILL – WISH U HERE. Doesn’t quite do it for me, though. Call me old-fashioned, but I still enjoy getting a pretty photo through the mail, depicting

somewhere exotic. But I do believe we have a duty to our loved ones to make the message vaguely amusing. Boring postcard messages are a no-no – and it’s so much more fun to give the postman, as well as our friends, something worth reading. But what happens when you’re in such a relaxed state that your brain seizes up, and you can’t think of a single word to write, witty or otherwise? You could consider following the penmanship of a dear friend of mine who, writing from Corfu several years ago, sent me a card which simply read:

Need help managing your investments and paperwork? Worrying about household bills? Don’t panic, says Karen Thomas at Carpenter Box Retirement is a time to enjoy your hobbies and pastimes and see more of your family. But these days we seem to be getting more and more paperwork through the door – and for many people, dealing with this is becoming a chore and a worry. If you have investments, for instance, you may find yourself drowning under a deluge of paperwork giving valuations and forecasts. It’s difficult to work out which pieces of paper need to be dealt with and which can be filed away. Household bills should be reviewed regularly to ensure you are getting the best deals. Our advice is don’t panic – help is at hand!

Karen Thomas from Carpenter Box Accountants gives tax advice to individuals in the local area. She deals with many retired people and prefers to do this on a personal level. In response to many requests from clients who are finding it difficult to manage their paperwork, their Silver Service is proving very successful. It provides support and, if needed, regular home visits to help with filing, form filling, investments and any tax matters arising. This service can be tailored to meet individual needs and is provided for a fixed monthly fee.

Karen and her team can also help you compare prices in household energy, insurance and telecommunications, to make sure you’re getting the best deal for your money. She’s also able to give advice regarding capital gains tax on selling assets, and inheritance tax on gifts or on your estate – and explain ways in which you can make tax savings. If you think Carpenter Box can help, call Karen on 01903 234094.

Last year 20,000 pensioners were forced to sell their homes – to fund care home fees It pays to plan in advance, says Glenys Laws at CLS

There are new proposals, being considered by the Government at present, which if they do eventually come into effect, would mean that people’s homes would not be sold immediately. They would be sold after the death of their owner, in order for the fees owed to be taken from the sale of the property at that stage, rather than before. The shocking figure, above, highlighted by the Daily Mail at the end of last year, is likely to continue rising

over the next few years due to government cuts to local authority budgets – resulting in fewer people getting the help they need to stay in their own home. On average, over the last five years, nearly 60 pensioners a day have had to sell up to pay for their care. This shows just how many of us who have worked, saved and paid taxes all our lives, have families who now see their inheritances vanish. The good news is that by arranging your legal affairs in advance, you can plan and protect your home and savings to ensure that you pass as much as possible to your loved ones. For a free informal consultation at home, or for more information, call Glenys Laws on 01903 200982 or visit the website at www. glenyslawscls.co.uk.

Save it or bin it? House clearance doesn’t have to be a nightmare

The loss of a loved one is a difficult time, and if you’re faced with the task of clearing out their home, it can be doubly daunting. Or if someone close to you is going into sheltered housing or residential care, you’ll need to make decisions on what to save and which possessions need to go. It’s tough at the best of times, but grief or stress can make these decisions even trickier. So when it comes to clearing out you need an expert with a sympathetic approach.

Garfy at Worthing based Star Solutions offers a complete clearance service, disposing of unwanted items sympathetically, efficiently and safely. He does all the work, so you don’t have to lift a finger. What’s more, he’s a licensed waste carrier, so you can be sure everything will be properly disposed of, in line with environmental waste regulations. Need a bed moved upstairs or heavy furniture shifted within a room? Garfy can handle it – and offers a light removal service, too. If you call him out for a job this summer, Garfy has pledged to give 10% of the cost to St Barnabas Hospice – so you’ll be helping a really worthwhile local charity.

Keep taking the tablets Don’t be confused by the latest technical wizardry, says Claire Love at LWS Creative

It took us ages to get the hang of PCs. We had to use Windows – which didn’t let you see into them – and we had to learn to click things with mice, which weren’t really rodents at all. Just when we started to get used to all this, they started talking about tablets – and not the ones we’re used to, in tamper-proof jars. These don’t need mice or those typewriter thingys. But, they said, they don’t have Windows either (well, some do). Most are Apples, they said – while some have “Android”, which sounds like something you can get cream for. Confused? No need to be. Here’s my quick guide to help you get it sorted.

The tablet market is dominated by the Ipad, now in version 2. There are very good reasons why this device is dominating the market right now, but there are some very good competitors out there, running Google’s Android system. But – and this is the important bit – do you need one? If you’ve already got a portable PC or laptop, the answer is, probably not – but you might want to consider one when it’s time for a replacement. If you have a desktop, but occasionally need to access the web somewhere else, or to make notes or read an e-book, tablets are a great solution and I’m sure that they can only grow in popularity. Best of all, the grandchildren will be very impressed. Claire Love is the Managing Director of West Sussex LWS Creative – a web, graphic design, training and marketing company. Caring 4 Yeste rdays

Send me a postcard, drop me a line Wendy Greene explores the history and changing role of the seaside postcard

Standing room only on Worthing beach in Edwardian times. And no-one would be seen in polite society without a hat

Before the advent of text messages and camera phones, the only contact from our friends and family on holiday was usually a picture postcard. Sometimes a view or place of local interest, sometimes a saucy joke, but mostly bearing a brief message – “wish you were here” or “enjoying ourselves despite the weather”. In the vast collection held by West Sussex County Library Service, messages such as “see you tomorrow” show that postcards were often delivered the following morning despite being postmarked as late as 9pm. Nowadays, it’s quite common to arrive home before your cards have been delivered to their destination, so postcards are used more as a memento than for a message.

Early postcards were produced by companies and hotels for promotional purposes and could only be posted if they bore a pre-paid stamp. Warnes Hotel in Worthing produced several cards, some of which look suspiciously “altered” to enhance its glamour. In September 1894, The Royal Mail began its halfpenny stamp service allowing publishers to sell picture postcards for posting. At first the message had to go alongside an illustration, with the address only on the reverse. Worthing photographer Walter Gardiner was among the first to produce a card depicting scenes of the town, and others followed rapidly. With the boom in seaside holidays in Edwardian times, the postcard industry became big business.

Despite modern communication advances, well over 100 million postcards a year are sent, and many kept as souvenirs to save printing the same view from digital cameras. Deltiology – the study and collection of postcards – has a huge following, with early cards bearing rare stamps fetching thousands of pounds at auction. Because, by their very nature, cards are sent away from the town in the picture, it is common to find a selection from your own town while browsing in antique shops anywhere in the country. The saucy seaside postcards of Donald McGill have become collectors’ items in their own right, but in the 1950s McGill was fined £50 with £25 court

costs for violating the 1857 Obscene Publications Act. This court ruling bankrupted companies who had to destroy their vast stock, but by the midsixties attitudes had changed and the jokes became far more risqué than before. Today’s political correctness seems to be turning tastes yet again, away from cartoon curvy girls and red-faced men and towards quirky photographs, like those produced by the Caravan Gallery (pictured). A great way to support artists is to buy postcards of their local views from craft shows and open house events. Who knows, you could be promoting a future Turner, Gardiner or McGill, or creating an heirloom for another generation.

Your chance to win a top title Worthing Under Attack An eye witness history of Worthing during the 1930s and 40s by Chris Hare Published in paperback by Guild Care and West Sussex County Council price £6.50, ISBN: 978 0 9563171 1 7 If you’re a fan of local history, you’re going to love this. It’s a fascinating and often enthralling account of how ordinary people coped with the impact of the Great Depression in the 1930s, followed swiftly by the dangers of war a decade later. It draws heavily on oral history – interviews conducted with real people who were living in Worthing at the time. The account of the war years and the many deadly attacks faced by the town between 1940 and 1944 are made

especially vivid by the inclusion of many previously unpublished photographs, showing the aftermath of bombing and machine gun raids on the town. Chris Hare’s lively style means you’ll look afresh not only at the history of Worthing – but at the history of the whole period. We’ve got two copies of this fascinating book for you to win.

Books can also be purchased at any of Guild Care charity shops, or from Worthing Library.

Q.

De ar Dr Sa rah…

Q.

I have been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. What is this and what treatment is available? Mrs D. Rogers, Shoreham

A.

Unfortunately, you don’t say how old you are or how this diagnosis was reached – i.e. what investigations you’ve had. Very briefly, any change of bowel habit needs careful investigation, particularly for people over the age of 50, where there is a greater incidence of bowel cancer. Irritable bowel syndrome is a ‘diagnosis of exclusion’, meaning that more sinister conditions have been excluded by investigation. Symptoms can be managed by dietary changes and medication for cramps and loose motions. Have a chat with your GP.

Dr Sarah Honess trained in Medicine at King’s College, London, and moved to Worthing in 2003, where she trained in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care. She now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.

Q.

My 8 year old daughter has suffered from hip and leg pain for some time now. My GP says it is growing pains. What causes this and how long should it last?

My husband is obsessed with ‘sell-by’ dates on food products and regularly throws away what I consider to be perfectly edible food. Who is right?

Mrs S. Tucker, Worthing

Mrs H. Warner, Littlehampton

A.

A.

Mmm… this is the sort of question I’m not good at. What are ‘growing pains’? Good question. The answer is I have absolutely no idea. I suppose it’s conceivable that a fast rate of bone growth in young people may be painful, but I would primarily be concerned that other, more medical causes for such pain be excluded. I would suggest another visit to the GP with a view to a referral to an orthopaedic surgeon. In the meantime, ensure good pain control.

It’s hard to give a definitive answer to this question. Firstly there is a difference between ‘sellby’ ‘best before’ and ‘use before’. Personally while I do take account of these essentially arbitrary dates, I use them as guides rather than absolutes. I prefer to use my eyes, nose, taste-buds and common sense. Any meat, whatever the date gets the heave-ho if it doesn’t look or smell right and I regard all but the freshest, hottest cook-chill meals with suspicion. For the rest I use my judgement and millions of years of evolution to tell me what’s safe to eat. Obviously, when feeding babies, the elderly or other folk with compromised immune systems I would be much more rigorous.

The Summer Denture Adventure dentures sorted, so you can enjoy those lazy, crazy days of summer. Here are some answers to your top questions from Paul Cullen, Clinical Dental Technician at The Denture Studio

Summer’s here, and there are all kinds of delicious goodies sizzling on the barbecue – but if you’ve got problems with your dentures, this can seriously spoil your fun. Don’t be down in the mouth – get your troublesome

My dentures have been a bit loose lately, and I don’t want to lose them at the first bite of my favourite barbecued steak. What can I do to ensure they stay put? Loose dentures probably mean your old teeth are worn out and you need to order new ones. But if you’re on a tight budget, you may like to consider having your old ones re-lined – this will

I have partial dentures made of plastic, which break annoyingly often and feel loose in my mouth. Is there a better alternative? Certainly. Try metal ones, which will clip into place easily and hold fast. These are usually made in a horseshoe shape, which clears the palate and makes eating a lot more fun. And because it’s a special shape that doesn’t cover the palate, you’ll get your sense of taste back. Some people, however, may find these are not suitable, so please check first. My dentures are uncomfortable and I find they’re rubbing my gums. They used to fit really well, so what’s happened?

Over the years your gums will have changed shape. Dentures need adjusting throughout their life in your mouth, so don’t go on suffering in silence – it could ruin that summery feeling you so deserve. See a clinical dental technician or a dentist to get these adjustments made. Got a question we haven’t covered here? Give Paul a call on 01342 322171. Although The Denture Studio address has changed, the phone number remains the same. You’ll now find the practice at The Old Mill 45 London Road, East Grinstead, RH19 1AW.

certainly improve the fit. But if the dentures are badly worn it would be better to get new ones. Talk to a dental professional and get some advice.

Scupper that scam! No-one likes to feel they have wasted their money or – even worse – been conned out of it. Sometimes older folk can present an attractive target for scammers, but most of us can protect ourselves if we have the right information and advice. Junk mail can pose a real problem. One of the most common types of scam you’ll receive in the mail concerns a bogus lottery or prize draw. You could be told you’ve won a large sum of money and asked to pay an administration fee before you can collect it. The prize is either non-existent or worth very little. Don’t be

fooled, don’t respond – and never give the scammer your bank details. Unrealistic claims about miracle products could be another type of scam. Astonishing health cures which sound too good to be true are best avoided. Many of these so-called medicines have not been properly tested and could even be harmful. Check with your GP before you buy any health product through the post For more help and advice on avoiding scams, call Age UK Advice free on 0800169 65 65 or visit www. ageuk.org.uk/moneymatters
