From the Editor Many families and friends have ‘in-jokes’ and their own private, invented words. One of ours was ‘bashinas’ my childhood name for ‘machines’, the amusements on the pier enjoyed during our annual holiday by the sea. The almost unbearable excitement as I clutched a bag of large, old pennies in one hand and my dad’s hand tightly in the other and looked down in fascinated terror at the crashing waves through the cracks of the wooden boards of the pier deck. The first machine I would make for was always ‘Haunted

House’ a small Victorian theatre in a glass display. As my penny dropped in it would spring into action and through the cobwebs the terror play would begin. This mechanical marvel would surely now be considered collectible and get a high valuation on the Antiques Roadshow, and so different from the noisy computerised gaming gadgets of today’s pier entertainment. I hope you enjoy our in depth look at the history of piers past and present . My daughter assures me that the word ‘bashina’ will continue as a family heirloom!

Congratulations to Mrs A O’Shea of East Preston who has won a framed print of our lovely summer cover picture, by Pamelia Long, with this witty caption.

Wendy Henwood – our cover designer Wendy Henwood is a Sussex artist and our stunning cover collage was created especially for Caring4Sussex. In an era when it’s so easy to cut and paste on the computer, it’s refreshing to find someone who still prefers the handson approach. Wendy arrived in Sussex in 1998 from the Forest of Dean. Her training was in Textiles and Lithography. Finding her skills a little rusty, she enrolled on a course at Northbrook College, where she met up with the ladies who joined with her to form Sienna Arts. They hope to exhibit in Worthing’s Christmas Arts Trail – 1st/2nd December. Regular readers may remember our Chichester Cathedral cover by Sienna’s Rosemary Jones. “My main inspiration comes from natural and organic forms.” says Wendy, “Drawing is most important, so I joined Dudley Sawer’s Life Drawing class at Heene Community Centre in Worthing. He has enabled me to exhibit at a number of venues.” Wendy has her own printing press and loves etching and gouache, as well as her current collage work.

Your home could be sold to fund care home fees “We have worked hard all our lives to leave something for our children and grandchildren. Why should the Local Authority get it all?” It pays to plan in advance, says Glenys Laws at CLS If you have to go into care and you have assets that total more than £23,250 (including the value of your home), you will have to fund your care in full. A care home could cost £500-£800 a week or more. The reality is that your children could end up with very little. Although care might seem only a distant possibility right now, there are important steps you should take now to protect your home.

Married Couples If you and your husband/wife currently have ‘Mirror Wills’ or ‘Joint Wills’ you risk leaving your share of your home

to your husband/wife for it simply to be swallowed up in care home fees. A legal trust arrangement within your Will could save your family tens of thousands of pounds and ensure your hard earned wealth passes to those you choose.

Widowed/Single The options available to you to protect your home are fewer and it is vital you act now. “I’m protected, I’ve signed my house over to my children” Have you considered what will happen if your child/ children experience marital difficulties and your home forms

part of a divorce settlement? What will happen if your child/ children experience financial difficulties and enter bankruptcy? Did you know that Capital Gains Tax is payable on second homes, meaning a potentially huge tax bill when your home is eventually sold by your children?

It’s not too late to put it right – just contact us for advice. The good news is that by arranging your legal affairs in advance, you can plan and protect your home and savings to ensure that you pass as much as possible to your loved ones.

For a free informal consultation at home, or for more information, call Glenys Laws on 01903 200982 or 07931 512448

Can you spare 4 hours a week? Becoming a volunteer with The Friends of Worthing Hospital will help make your local hospital special. Volunteers are needed to help with the running of our Hospital shops The West wing shop and coffee bar is open 6 days a week The Cafeteria in the main entrance is open 5 days a week The trolley shop provides afternoon service on the wards Profits from the sales within these shops have already helped fund some much needed high-tech equipment We are now raising money for our CT Scanner appeal launched this year to celebrate our 60 years.

Most people get their sight & teeth checked regularly, SO WHY NOT ADD YOUR HEARING to the list? If your hearing is beginning to let you down it’s important to do something about it. Because, like any other healthcare issue, the earlier you get a diagnosis, the better the outcome is likely to be.

The Future is in Your Hands Philip Lansberry, Director of Spofforths Private Client Services, explains why it is so important to plan ahead …

I am often asked “What steps should I be taking to keep my affairs in order now I’m getting older”? It is a simple enough question but the answer needs a bit of thinking about as there are so many things one can do. Some are absolutely vital and others of less importance. Making sure you leave an up-to-date Will is crucial. The stress and worry caused by an inappropriate Will can be so easily avoided by everyone ensuring their Will is up-to-date, legally binding, tax efficient and, most importantly of all, carefully planned so the Will itself doesn’t create a problem. Serious consideration should also be given to signing Lasting Powers of Attorney. Out of all the people who have registered one, only 8 per cent have covered their health and welfare. It seems we are all far more worried about our money than our care. Money management is important but surely so is who is going to look after us, take important health decisions on our behalf and organise where we live in the years to come. Next, there is a lovely old expression called ‘Dying tidily’. In essence this means filing financial papers carefully and not hoarding records going back years and years. Perhaps taking out a pre-paid funeral plan and decluttering the house a bit. And don’t forget to tell the children where your Will, house deeds and other important papers are kept. Two final thoughts. First, if your Estate will be liable to Inheritance Tax it is never too late to do something about it and, secondly, think about consolidating your investments and bank accounts if you are in the habit of spreading your money around. Someone’s going to have to find them all and close them down. There is over £10 billion worth of unclaimed assets in the UK at any one time. Some of that money might belong to your family!

Please contact Philip on 01403 253282 to arrange a consultation. Spofforths’ can organise a home or hospital visit.

Caring 4 Susse x Piers

A stroll down the piers Wendy Greene looks at the chequered history of piers in Sussex

Photo © Hastings Library

Let us take you for a stroll on the Pier. Not just one, but several – some still thriving, some long gone. Remember the “end of the pier shows”, imagine the paddlesteamers docking and relive the days when a few pennies could keep a child entertained for a couple of hours. Seaside piers date back to around 1800 and fewer than 60 of the original 100 still stand. In Sussex we have five of them. You might think that, being thirteenth to be built, Worthing Pier fulfilled superstition by being blown down, burnt down and blown up, but in fact all our

surviving piers have had their problems. The sixth, West Pier in Brighton, is derelict. Littlehampton, strictly speaking, doesn’t have a pier but a jetty. The National Piers Society tell me a pier must have its feet in salt water, be partially on legs and support a leisure building. Littlehampton’s leisure complex is next to, not on, the jetty. Its original towers, known as ‘salt and pepper’ were removed in 1940 in case the enemy used them as navigational markers. A new tower was built in 1948 but the front range is no longer a tower, simply a green light on a pole.

Many piers were built as landing stages for boats delivering cargo and passengers, and prior to the emergence of Newhaven as a major port, Brighton’s Chain Pier was the terminal for boats to France. The Victorians loved piers and soon kiosks and attractions were installed along them, followed by pavilions, cafés and amusement arcades. Some became known for their summer shows where holidaymakers could see London stars down for the season. During wartime, the government had two options – to remove part of the structure

to prevent enemy troops landing or to fortify them. Bognor chose the latter in both world wars, naming their pier HMS St Barbara in the second, for which it was awarded a commemorative plaque by the Royal Air Force Association in 2010. Hastings Pier, which was armed, was bombed. In recent years many piers have suffered from changes in holiday habits, yet whenever anybody threatens to remove or drastically alter a pier, there is an outcry from local people, often followed by Grade II listing and grant applications. Bognor introduced its Birdman competition and when the water depth was deemed unsafe, Worthing was pleased to take over. Bognor sorted out its problems in 2010 and now both towns have successful events bringing crowds to the piers once again.

In 2008, The Ice Prince deposited its cargo of hundreds of tons of wood on Worthing beach and one year later a stained glass panel, created by local artist Chris Brown to commemorate the event, was installed on the pier. This started a welcome trend for more art events, which, together with its annual Pier Day, bring new life to Worthing Pier. In 2006 it was nominated Pier of the Year, following Eastbourne’s success in 1997.

And so our piers live on, some more overtly commercial than others, all still holding a little bit of magic for those who take time to stroll to the end and look back at the promenade. Even in death, Brighton’s West Pier is still a spectacle – every evening it is the stage for a bird ballet as murmurations of starlings whirl and dive before settling on the skeletal remains for the night.

Caring 4 Pets

It’s a stressful time for pets Our pet experts look at the problems and finds solutions Picture © Pamelia Long

8

In the next three months, pets of all types, but especially those that have spent much of the summer outside, may be put through stressful situations. The weather will get colder – which requires the growth of a winter coat – strangers will appear in the home, and loud noises will be heard when you least expect them. For six weeks after the children return to school, pets can enjoy a period of calm, spending their days doing their own thing without interference. Then comes half term. With blustery gales already putting the wind in their tails, cats in particular, can become stressed if handled by youngsters who

want to love them a bit too much. Dogs and cats can live very happily together, but being indoors with visitors’ children can be a step too far for either or both if they’re not used to each other. Worthing Cat Welfare are very careful about rehoming cats where dogs or children already live, so you can’t assume they’ll get on. At this time of year, rabbits can no longer graze in their summer runs and can quickly become bored stuck in a hutch – and if it isn’t kept clean it’s especially unpleasant. If rabbits are handled when small, they may later be happy to play indoors for a while, but they

too, along with other small mammals, can become victims of careless handling by children. Just when the poor creatures thought they could relax, along comes bonfire night – or bonfire fortnight, the season now lasting from Hallowe’en to mid-November at least – with loud unexpected bangs and flashes shattering their peace. Says Hannah at Zebedee’s Pet Supplies, “It’s kindest to bring pets, including rabbits and other small mammals, indoors if you can. New Year can be noisy too.” And then there’s Christmas when everything changes yet again with visits from friends and family. “Cats are very sensitive to change in their environment

and routine,” warns Amanda, Veterinary Surgeon at Cat’s Whiskers Veterinary Clinic. “Christmas can be a stressful time for them. Even putting up decorations and a Christmas tree can interfere with the scent marks they have left, which may cause stress.” You should also be aware that small children, and even unknowing adults, may try to feed unsuitable food to your pets, some of which may upset their system while others, like that chocolate Santa off the tree, can be dangerous. Just take a little time to make your pets comfortable and secure.

All smiles at Melrose A happy home where you’re sure of a warm welcome

When you’re greeted with smiles from staff and residents alike, you know you’re in a happy place. Melrose is a privately owned Worthing Care Home providing nursing for the elderly – the only Nursing Home in the area assessed as ‘Excellent’ by Care Quality Commission and given (and retained) the top accolade of 3 stars before CQC

stopped awarding stars, as well as having Beacon Status in the Gold Standards Framework in end of life care (GSF). The dedicated team of registered nurses, carers and housekeeping staff undergoes regular updating and training, ensuring a high quality, professional approach to all aspects of care.

There’s a wide range of activities on offer daily, and residents are encouraged to continue their former hobbies, such as gardening, flower arranging or arts and crafts. Specially adapted computers are available for residents to use with regular computer lessons for anyone wanting to improve their skills or take up surfing the net. Meals are cooked fresh every day using locally bought meat, fruit and vegetables, with residents having input when the excellent team of cooks re-designs the menu, taking all diets into consideration. Visitors are welcome at all times, with family and friends encouraged to take an active part in the life of the home – even staying for a meal.

The gardens, designed by Judy Gordon in conjunction with the residents, are well stocked with beautiful trees, shrubs and borders. Raised borders can be tended from a wheelchair, and designated areas of garden are available should residents wish to have their own ‘patch’. The patios and paths are well maintained to give a safe and very pleasant walking/seating area for all. Melrose also offers day care – for those wanting company and a hot meal – as well as respite care either for a rest, after a hospital stay or while carers are away.

Seasonal delights at the Shelley

Despite the wettest summer on record, the weather didn’t stop residents and staff at The Shelley celebrating the UK in style. We marvelled at the Diamond Jubilee, the amazing

Olympics and Paralympics and enjoyed garden parties, summer fetes, successful charity coffee mornings, as well as having an endless array of entertainers, outings and activities –

including our new zumba gold. Now, as nights begin earlier and leaves turn and fall, there’s no let up. We look forward to celebrating Autumn’s crisp mornings and earlier evenings, and with Halloween just around the corner, many hand carved pumpkins appear around the home. Numerous events are planned leading up to a fun packed Christmas, including the anticipated reindeer visit. Why not join us – allegedly the best decorated care home – for a coffee from December 1st, and see our Christmas decorations. As the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness settles, our chefs will be hard at work preparing a tantalising choice of seasonal fare at lunch and supper, so that residents at the Shelley can look forward to an Autumn menu of gorgeous

local produce. Pumpkin soup, plum crumble, apple and blackberry pies are just some of the scrumptious dishes planned for the Shelley’s Autumn menu – and everything is always beautifully presented to tempt even the most delicate or temperamental appetites. As well as our mission to provide top quality care there’s always plenty of choice on the Shelley menu, with a roast or curry for lunch, plenty of seasonal vegetables and a lighter option, often salad or omelette. And there’s a choice of two cooked suppers or a sandwich, if preferred. There are fabulous desserts and cakes – a real temptation for our staff, who love popping into the kitchen for a taster. The Shelley truly is a special place!

Mr Jones, 84, Alcoholic It was a common presentation. Mr Jones – not his real name – had taken a tumble in his neat little garden, banged his head on a plant pot, sustained a nasty laceration to his forehead, badly broken his right arm and taken most of the skin off his shins. Mr Jones lives by himself in a tidy one bedroom flat with no help. He struggles, but is a proud ex-serviceman and just about gets by. His only family, a niece, lives in Scotland. Mr Jones is on warfarin for an irregular heart beat.

This was 3 weeks ago and Mr Jones is still in hospital. He had to have blood tests, an ECG, X-rays and a CT scan of his head. He has been looked after by teams of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and social workers. For Mr Jones this has been a life changing event. Mr Jones’ little dog had to go into kennels. For the NHS it has been a very costly business indeed. All just to get our friend back to where he was on the afternoon of the fall, pottering about in his garden. On the

afternoon of said fall Mr Jones had been drinking, and on the afternoon before that, and on the one before that too, since his beloved wife of 60 years had died, several years previously. We are all too aware of excess alcohol consumption in the young. They shout and fight and vomit all over our town centres and their partially clothed bodies litter the streets – and A&E units – on most weekends. Tackling problem drinking in the elderly is a different problem entirely. After their lifetime of hard work, world wars and hardship, who am I to say they may not enjoy a sherry at the lunch club or half a Guinness with dinner? That’s not what I am saying at all of course. It’s not embarrassing to ask about medication, walking aids, stairs and access, eyesight and hearing. Somehow it’s easier to ignore the elephant in the room rather than quiz a proud old man – who could teach me a thing or two about life in general – on his alcohol consumption. Yet, had someone asked on previous similar presentations, not only about the drinking, but the grief, the loneliness and the boredom, the isolation and the pain, it might

have saved this man many weeks in hospital and the NHS a lot of resources. Most of these men, others like him, ladies and couples too, do not live in remote farmhouses in the middle of nowhere. They live on streets, next door to people like me, next door to busy families who are surely not so very busy with their own lives that they could not poke their heads round the door for a chat or offer a family meal from time to time. I’ll be old one day too, maybe bored and lonely and I hope my neighbours will care enough to check I don’t spend all afternoon talking to the telly with a mug of sherry in my hand… Dr Sarah Honess trained in Medicine at King’s College, London, and moved to Worthing in 2003, where she trained in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care. She now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital. Alcoholics Anonymous can support and help you if you are worried about your drinking. 0845 7697555 www.alcoholicsanonymous.org.uk
