We made it through the winter! After all those chilly months of waiting, spring is finally here – with clocks going forward, gorgeous pink blossom in parks and gardens, and all kinds of small creatures emerging from winter hibernation to stretch their furry limbs and snuffle off in search of food. Thinking back towards the end of October – there’s something rather inviting about the thought of hibernation, isn’t there? An old friend of mine always claimed to be on the point of signing up for the whole business, especially (I suspect) the part where you have to lay in vast stores of body fat in order to see you through the winter. Then, presumably groaning under the weight of all those pizzas, burgers and other high carb nosh, you double lock the door, turn off the phones and the alarm – and snuggle in under the duvet. Bliss! But, wait a minute! Have you turned down the central heating thermostat? No point in wasting energy while you’re in the land of Nod for four months. Suppose it gets really cold and the pipes

Suppose that dripping tap in the bathroom fills up the entire bath and gushes through the ceiling causing a major flood? And, come December, whatever’s going to happen when all those Christmas cards start piling through the letterbox, with no chance of a seasonal reply? And, oh heck! Just think how many gazillions of emails you’ll have to wade through in your Inbox on the first day of spring. I’m so glad I stayed awake.

What’s more, they’re offering free lessons throughout May, on Tuesday and Saturday afternoons from 2pm, so now’s the time to find out about joining. Book your child’s nursery place now If you’re looking for childcare in the next academic year, it’s a good idea to get organised in plenty of time. Now is an ideal time to visit local nurseries, check out the facilities, meet the staff and decide which will be best for your child. And if you’re expecting a new addition to the family, don’t delay. It’s important to book his or her Nursery place well in advance. Take a look at Woodstock Day Nursery in Farncombe Road, where they’ve been undergoing all sorts of refurbishments to play areas. The downstairs bathroom has had a complete renovation, too. Now spring has arrived, there’s plenty of fun to be had in the fresh air – and Woodstock has a large safe garden with playhouses, sand pit, water play and climbing
frame. Recent additions to the garden include a new all-weather play area with a storyteller’s chair. There’s a high ratio of qualified staff, and the nursery has its own Early Years Professional, so you can be sure your preschoolers are happy, safe and enjoying life to the full. To find out more about what Woodstock has to offer babies and pre-schoolers, call 01903 233655.
8 Essential Business
Worthing Business Circle – the Worthing network Build relationships, build business and build the community Strong business relationships are vital in any community, and if you run a small to medium business in the local area, you’ll know how important it is to make the right contacts and get the right referrals to help your business grow. Networking really is the way forward, and there are several local groups offering opportunities to socialise over breakfast and promote your company at the same time. But what makes Worthing Business Circle so special? Ask its members, and they’ll tell you. “We believe in networking in a relaxed and informal environment, with no hard sell,” says Keith Preston at Option Hygiene. “Building relationships and trust between members is so important, because this is what generates genuine business referrals.”
“Thanks to the relationships we have built within the membership group we regularly exchange ideas, offer mutual support, encouragement and the occasional challenge,” says Graham Vaughan at Enterprise Actions. “Over the years, we’ve created a network of trusted business contacts we can recommend with confidence.” Worthing Business Circle has been established in the town for over seven years. It’s a group of up to 40 local business people, managed by a committee of members who are elected each year during the AGM. The group meets weekly for Wednesday breakfast at Hill Barn Golf Club – an ideal venue that’s close to town and next to the A27, so members can get to work easily after the meeting. There’s easy, free parking for everyone, too.
“Our Wednesday mornings begin at 7am and officially finish by 8.45am, so you’ve got to be an early riser,” says Chairman Simon Lovering of Eco Innovations “It’s always a great atmosphere, and the perfect way to get to know our networking colleagues. And once every quarter we replace our breakfast meeting with an evening social networking
event, starting around 6.30pm, for those people who function better later in the day!”
Fancy becoming a member? If you would like to come along as a guest at one of the Worthing Business Circle meetings, please contact the group by email at admin@worthingbusinesscircle.co.uk. Or take a look at the list of members on the website at www.worthingbusinesscircle.co.uk. Chances are you already know someone in the group who will be more than happy to introduce you as a guest. The group operates a strict policy of one business per category, to avoid clash of interest. Breakfast will cost you £10, payable on the door.

Stories in Stone Stone masonry is a living art, says Alison Campbell at H D Tribe
Churchyards, cemeteries and their memorials are one of the most valuable sources of local history – telling a story more vividly than many written records. And taking a walk around them brings back the past in a very special way. At H D Tribe our team of highly experienced and creative masons design and prepare memorials of great beauty. These talented craftsmen take pride in their finished work, ensuring that it is of the highest quality. We can manufacture any shape, size or design in any material, and all ornaments and designs are interchangeable.
Our large showroom allows you to view the many different materials and memorials available, and we’re happy to advise you. What’s more, we’ll send a layout proof with your estimate so you can see a scaled down version of the memorial and inscription. The Diocese of each district has regulations on the placement of memorials into each churchyard, which may restrict you in your choice. They require that all new memorials are in keeping with those from hundreds of years ago – allowing them to blend in with their surroundings. But they do encourage inscriptions about the life of a loved one, rather than just stating names and dates. With our extensive knowledge of these regulations, we can guide you through all aspects of your order.
If you’re choosing a memorial for a loved one, we’ll help you make the very best choice. Our showroom at 26 South Street, Lancing is open 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday.
Our stonemasons undertake a wide range of work, including headstones, tablets, books, pet plaques, wall plaques, renovations and general maintenance. Call 01903 764426 for more information, or email stonemasons@hdtribe.co.uk.

Lofty sentiments
Is your attic full of music and fun? asks Tony of Guitars & Vintage Toys to 2pm on Saturdays. You could make your past pay for your future – and make someone else very happy at the same time.
Now is the time to climb that loft ladder, sort through all those souvenirs of your youth and decide if someone else should be enjoying them. We buy and sell electric and acoustic guitars, so whether your Hendrix or James Taylor aspirations are well and truly in the past or just resurfacing, give us a call. We also have books, records and vintage toys by Hornby,
Tri-ang, Matchbox and other well-loved manufacturers. If you are selling, we’ll give you a fair price and if you’re buying we accept any sensible offer. It could be that once you’ve cleared a space in the attic, you want to start again with a proper grown-up train track, complete with accessories. Just call in, browse and recapture your childhood. We are open 9.30am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 9.30am
I’ll take you there – at last year’s prices Let me be your chauffeur, says David Matthew of Absolute Anywhere Having worked as a taxi driver in Worthing and transport manager in my father’s company – which included driving a truck across the UK and Europe – I decided to start my own business and launched Absolute Anywhere in January last year. I now enjoy driving for the residents of Worthing, especially older folk and those needing to transport pets. I run very clean, luxurious cars at excellent rates and have a ‘call or text back’ service, which can help those with hearing impairment. Being polite, reliable, smart and organised is very important to my business. I always get out of the car to open the door for my passengers and help with any baggage. Much of my work involves airports and seaport transfers. And the really good

Getting it right – keeping it delicious Tradition is firmly on the menu at Tides Restaurant
Regular customers at the awardwinning Tides Restaurant in Aldsworth Avenue know exactly what to expect when they pop in for breakfast or lunch. Traditional dishes, beautifully cooked using fresh ingredients and served in a relaxed, friendly way – that’s the ethos of this top class little eatery, run by husband and wife team Mark and Ali. But here’s something you may not know. On Friday and Saturday evenings, Tides is open for dinner – and the ambience changes dramatically, from daytime bistro to an intimate, candlelit ambience we know you’ll love. There’s a special evening menu – and now spring is finally here, we can’t
wait to sample the Cannon of Spring Lamb, served with olive mash. It’s a brilliant signature dish for the season. Dishes like Pork Tenderloin, pan fried with apple brandy and mustard sauce are simple but gorgeous – and the oven baked Cod Fillet, topped with a parsley lemon and parmesan crust is a real must-try. Theme nights are incredibly popular at Tides, and always fill up quickly, so you need to book well in advance. Just ask at Tides for details. “It didn’t take a Splash Award last year to highlight our strengths,” says Mark. “But we were delighted to win – and it’s always good to know when you’re getting something right!” Book your table on 01903 500040 or online at www.tidesrestaurant.net.
Gifts without guilt A great alternative to chocolate When it comes to ideas for Easter gifts for all ages, Kingsley Coffee in Ferring has the perfect solution – and you can be sure they have done everything possible to be environmentally friendly. From the packaging to the heating, green is their theme. “We believe in buying British,” says Fiona, “and many items are made by local artists. We even have honey produced in Ferring.” At this time of year, sometimes you can have too much chocolate, so it’s good to have such an excellent selection of alternatives under one roof. Take a look at the fabulous artwork and craft items, including wooden boxes, pots and vases, leather-bound
note pads, and jewellery. The silk flowers are exquisite and you’ll have to look twice to know they aren’t real. There’s wrapping paper and greetings cards too. For a really personalised gift, you can decorate a pottery egg. As they come in two halves, you could even put something special inside. You can choose from two sizes and paints are provided. There are many other items to choose from in the Pottery Shop area, and children love it. Kingsley’s has become a popular place for coffee and cakes as well as light lunches. The wood-burning stove is a cosy focal point next to sofas where you can relax and meet friends. You’ll find Kingsley Coffee at 50 Ferring Street. Call 01903 227727 for more details.

St Barnabas House has been providing specialist palliative care for local people and their families for almost 40 years – and now, with the opening of a superb new, purpose-built hospice, months of planning and careful financial management have finally come to fruition. The new building, set in tranquil surroundings in Titnore Lane is less than a mile away from the hospice’s previous location in Columbia Drive. It’s all set to provide care at the highest level. “At St Barnabas, our aim is to ensure that the comfort and dignity of our patients is at the heart of everything we do,” says Chief Executive, Hugh Lowson (pictured). “Through consultations with our patients, their families, our staff and volunteers and other healthcare professionals, we’re confident that the new building will be the very best for everyone who uses the hospice.” The number of in-patient beds has increased to 20, with accommodation in beautifully furnished single en suite rooms, providing patients with greater

Share the care – a great way to help families with disabled children
Caring for a child or young person with a disability is demanding, so sharing the care – even for a short time – can make a big difference. There’s a real need for more short break carers to help disabled children and their families in the county, and you may already have seen posters from West Sussex County Council at your local school, hospital, health centre or library. “Short break carers come from a wide range of ages and backgrounds,” says Peter Evans, Cabinet Member for Children and Families. “The most important quality is to
share a love of working with children – and we’re looking for new carers. The amount of time you give is very flexible and can be anything from a few hours a week, to an overnight stay once a month.” Short break carers have access to a comprehensive training programme, which includes how to care for a specific child’s needs, and are paid either for overnight stays or an hourly rate if care is during the day. Like to find out more? Contact the Fostering Recruitment Team on 01403 229333.

Fantastic fans Carol Wagstaff’s exhibition in the Norwood Gallery at Worthing Museum and Art Gallery
Cockade by Carol Wagstaff Sussex based artist and printmaker Carol Wagstaff has been behind the scenes at Worthing Museum and Art Gallery to discover a stunning fine art and fan collection. She found over 300 fans from China and Europe in the Museum which were used in different ways. In the Far East, fans were an important part of everyday life, especially in ceremonial functions. In the royal courts of Europe they were used for sending coded messages. Carol studied the paintings of Charles Morris and the fan collection – and created drawings and paintings based on the stories or patterns she
saw. Now there’s a fan-tastic chance for you to see some of the historic fans and paintings alongside Carol’s paintings. “As a child I was given a Japanese fan which fascinated me and fuelled my interest in the objects and culture of the Far East,” explains Carol. “One of the Chinese proverbs that gives meaning to the fan is To Call the Wind, to Strike a Butterfly which I thought was charming. It encapsulates perfectly the language of the fan.” To Call the Wind, to Strike a Butterfly runs at Worthing Museum until July 9, so there’s plenty of time for a browse.

18 Essential Pets
One year old and going strong – they’re definitely the Cat’s Whiskers
In April last year we announced the opening of a just-for-cats veterinary practice in South Farm Road and we’re delighted to be wishing them Happy Birthday. Their reputation has grown and however busy they are, owners Amanda Nicholls MRCVS (Veterinary Surgeon) and Kelly Goss (Practice Manager) will always greet you with a smile. Their nursing team (Laura Nutley RVN – Veterinary Nurse, Julie Jasper – Senior Feline Adviser, and Rosemary Burns – Cat Care Assistant) are
on hand to help too. At Cat’s Whiskers Veterinary Clinic, they believe a proactive, preventative approach to a cat’s healthcare is far better than waiting until he or she is vulnerable, ill or suffering. They want to make responsible pet ownership simple and affordable, so have designed Pet Health Plans which are tailored to your cat’s needs. The plans cover year round preventative treatments – vaccinations, flea and worming treatments, regular health checks and nail clips. The 15 or 30 minute appointments allow your cat a chance to settle in and relax before being examined. This provides time for you to discuss your cat’s health in detail with the vet or nurse. All consultations include a full health check.
There’s a range of medical and surgical services from vaccinations and wellness checks to neutering, dental work and medical investigations and staff can give you tips on preparing your cat for a visit to the vet and even diffuse cat specific pheromone scents (Feliway) for a calming effect.
Cat’s Whiskers Veterinary Clinic at 125 South Farm Road, is open 6 days a week with a 24 hour emergency service. Call 01903 830 577, email info@ cwvet.co.uk or visit www. cwvet.co.uk for information and help. You can also register your cat online and receive 10% off your first visit.
Catnip – an Easter treat for your cat
Chocolate is toxic to cats so how about a catnip treat for Easter? Catnip is a perennial herb of the mint family found growing throughout the world. It contains various aromatic oils including a mild hallucinogen, which causes a reaction we all recognise. Some cats will rub their cheeks and chin, sniff, lick and eat the plant – sometimes rolling around in ecstasy. Catnip needs to be inhaled to work, the scent being concentrated in the vomeronasal organ – found in many animals at Veterinary Clinic LLP the back of the nose. The Denture Detective
Uncomfortable dentures are a crime. If they’re loose or illfitting, your dentures can ruin a meal, make conversation difficult and adversely affect your life in a big way. That’s why you need an expert who can track down those problems and solve them for you.
“Don’t suffer in silence,” says Paul Cullen, Clinical Dental Technician at The Denture Studio. “Whatever your denture problem may be, I’ll find the answer.” Paul is based in East Grinstead, but makes home visits with free initial consultation all over the Essentially Worthing area. This means he can assess exactly what you need and give the best advice without you needing to stir from your favourite armchair – from first visit to final fitting. Sherlock could be his middle name! Put an end to criminal dentures, and give Paul a call on 01342 322171. Although The Denture Studio address has changed, the phone number remains the same. You’ll now find the practice at The Old Mill, 45 London Road, East Grinstead, RH19 1AW.
If only i’d gone to...
Stop the flow If you suffer from nosebleeds, here’s what to do. Blow the clot out and then stop. Give your nose one – and only one – vigorous blow to dislodge any clots which could be keeping the blood vessel open. Don’t blow again for at least 12 hours. Pinch the fleshy part of your nose. Apply continuous pressure for five to seven minutes. Sit up straight. If blood is trickling down the back of your nose into your mouth, lean forward slightly and spit into a bowl. Apply ice. An ice pack on the bridge of the nose can narrow the blood vessels and reduce bleeding.

Hopping along to the Shelley Those Easter bunnies are paying a special visit
Residents at the Shelley are all set for a brilliant Easter this month – with all kinds of treats, celebrations and events planned by Fiona and Peter, their inventive activities team. This top class residential care home always makes sure there are fabulous decorations throughout the year, and this month residents will find large Easter wreaths decorated with eggs, and fetchingly dressed
boy and girl bunnies – complete with carrots, of course – popping up all over the place. “Who says decorations are only for Christmas?” says Marlene. “I love them for all kinds of special occasions, and so do the residents. They certainly generate plenty of egg-citement!” There’s an Egg Hunt, where two teams of residents compete to solve a number of cryptic
clues, and then instruct the staff on where to hunt. There’s also an Egg Head competition, with a chance for arty types to design their own decorated egg. “Designs vary enormously, from funny faces to geometric patterns to seriously artistic efforts,” says Marlene, owner of the Shelley. “And, of course, there’s a chance to design and make cards, too, to send to relatives and friends.” Ex-chef Peter has been running a series of fortnightly tasting sessions for some time now – and these are proving a huge hit, with something new and exciting to try each time. But there are no prizes for guessing what’s on the tasting agenda for Easter. “Chocolate is a winner,” says Peter. “As with all our tasting sessions, everyone gets an information sheet about the
different types of chocolate, and a score sheet to record their preferences. No-one’s going to want to miss out on this!” Easter morning always starts with a trip to the early morning church service, for those who want to go. And all staff and residents are given their own Easter egg. “Easter is the perfect time to think about new beginnings, re-birth, young lambs, the magic of spring flowers and all those lovely optimistic things that make life worth living,” says Marlene. “And if you can have hot cross buns for tea, as well – that’s just the tops, isn’t it?”

Pioneers of cuisine and service
Courage Award – Shane Wallace From top local businesses to special individuals, from sports teams to brilliant charities – Worthing proves once again that our town has it all. At the Splash FM Awards ceremony last month, a glittering event held at the iconic Dome Cinema, the stories we heard were so heart-warming there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. The ceremony, hosted by Paul Williams and Anna B, was held on Thursday March 17 and honoured all kinds of people in 16 different categories. Take a look at the winners – and be inspired by these fantastic local achievements.
Dad of the Year – Scott Melhuish Although seriously disabled with a chronic bowel condition, Scott’s love for his four children shines out.
Shane has been described as “a very caring man with a heart of gold.” He devoted his life to caring for both parents until their deaths, and although diagnosed with cancer, now looks after his disabled brother.
Top Teacher – Brian Thomas Mr Thomas is a Year 7 teacher at Durrington Middle School. His pupils tell us he’s simply “the best”

Fundraiser of the year – Luke Young
Charity of the Year – St Barnabas Hospice
Luke, a High School student, doesn’t let youth stand in his way when it comes to fundraising. His initiatives have resulted in hundreds of pounds being raised for a number of charities.
St Barnabas is close to the heart of many local people, not only to those who need palliative care, but also to their friends and families.
Pub of the year – Bar Release For good food, a great atmosphere and a range of cocktails described by its clientele as “amazing”, Bar Release is a worthy winner.

Best Friend – Sheena Sivyer
This group of eight youngsters are all under 18, and faced the huge challenge of keelboat racing at the top level.
Jean Barnard, who nominated Sheena, told us no-one could have a better friend. After Jean lost her husband in a road accident, Sheena provided all kinds of emotional and practical support.
Mum of the Year – Wendy Robinson Single Mum Wendy works tirelessly to care for her son, Mark, who is wheelchair bound. Her devotion and dignity in the face of tough challenges are second to none.
SPECIAL RECOGNITION: Rowland Gibson

Essential Splash 23
Moving Story It’s amazing what you find in other people’s houses, says Chris Bailey I’ve never considered myself to be a nosey person. I don’t normally stand with a notepad watching the neighbours come and go – and I’m sure they’ll be pleased to hear this. However, after recent experiences I think all that may have changed. You see, I’m going though what most people suggest is the most stressful thing in life. I am moving house. Firstly, though, I had to tackle the quest to find the house to move to. This, as far as I’m concerned, is the fun bit. You get to see inside people’s houses, into people’s lives. Perfect strangers let you in their home and allow – no, encourage – you to stick your head into cupboards, peer behind normally closed doors and generally root around their homes. It’s an experience with all the fun of Come Dine With Me, without actually having to cook a meal.
You do see some sights, though, don’t you? Some of the houses you view you’ll remember forever. Sometimes because of the meticulous decor, stylish ornaments and chic furniture, you get that sinking feeling, and realise that, despite the number of times you visit the Ideal Home Exhibition, you will never be able to recreate anything which even comes close. Others are memorable for very different reasons. Considering the houses I viewed are right in the Worthing area, and some of the owners may well be leafing through these pages as we speak, I’ll choose my words with care, preferring not to meet an angry mob when I leave the Splash studio. There was the house with the empty hall cupboard – empty that is, apart from some bolt croppers.

Then there was the house in complete darkness as the family sat on the sofa watching a DVD. And they remained sitting on the sofa, in silent darkness, while we picked our way over their feet and peered into the gloom of the room murmuring the usual tactful comments. (“It’s a good size.”) And the welcoming mum who asked us (very politely) to be extra quiet when viewing the back bedroom, as her teenage son was still fast asleep in the bed after a heavy night out. This wouldn’t have been quite so bad if it hadn’t been mid-afternoon at the time. I’m very happy to say we’ve now found on the perfect house in Broadwater and if nothing drastic goes amiss, we’ll be settled by the summer. So if you see us moving in next door, feel free to twitch those
net curtains and embrace the nosiness! I’m saying this in the true spirit of neighbourliness. Anything else might feel hypocritical. Catch Chris Bailey on Splash FM weekday evenings (7pm till midnight) and Saturday mid morning (10am-2pm)

26 Essential Zodiac A fun, friendly look at what’s in the stars for you in April
AQUARIUS (Jan 21 – Feb 19)
You’ve been on a financial high for some time now, and this lucky trend is all set to continue – with several opportunities for sound investment just around the corner. You could find yourself handling some high tech equipment, and you’ll be travelling locally, too. There are all sorts of courses, lectures and seminars to attend, so take a look at what’s on offer, and pick those you know you’ll find useful.
PISCES
(Feb 20 – March 20) Money is the name of the game this month – and you could receive a surprise payment from someone who’s owed you a tidy sum for a long while. New and lucrative work projects are all set to present themselves, insurance claims are looking promising – and there could even be a pay rise in the offing. It’s a tough life – but someone has to live it!
ARIES
(March 21 – April 20)
LEO
(July 24 – Aug 23) The sky’s the limit this month, as you’re entering a phase of true happiness and good fortune. Your intellectual horizons are expanding fast, with all kinds of educational and travel opportunities. Health is good – but beware of burning the candle at both ends. An intelligent discussion with a good friend could be more fun than a night on the tiles.
VIRGO
(Aug 24 – Sept 23) You’re feeling flirty and sexy this month – and others will find you attractive and fun to be with, whatever your age. Friends and family are in generous mood, but don’t rely on them to sort out your financial problems. If you have an unpaid bill or two, tackle them this month – either by getting them paid off, or by setting up a payment plan to clear the debt.
LIBRA
(Sept 24 – Oct 23)
This is a feelgood time, so there’s no need to dash out into the middle of life’s arena, waving flags and yelling. Instead, cosy in with your family and let the good things come to you. Your significant other is making a huge effort to please you – and if it’s your birthday, you can expect a gift that’s really got the ‘wow’ factor!
If you’re feeling under the weather this month, don’t just sit about feeling gloomy. Book yourself a massage or a pamper session to help regain some positive energy. Your social life has been a bit of whirl recently, and this could account for those low energy levels. Take it easy and spend a few evenings at home with a good book. Nothing is more important than your health – and your sanity.
TAURUS
SCORPIO
(April 21 – May 21)
(Oct 24 – Nov 22)
You’re in the perfect position to create exactly the conditions you want in your life. Do this by building wisely, and try to avoid confrontations or power struggles. Your financial savvy has always been spot on, and you’ll find it increases as the month progresses. It’ll become obvious that you’ll need to hold off on those really important decisions until the last week of the month.
When it comes to love, you’re usually a bit of a tricky customer. You thrive on the thrill of the chase, you love to party, but when commitment is called for, you’re gone in a puff of smoke. If this sounds pretty accurate, listen carefully. The time is coming when this cannot, and will not continue. Change is in the wind, and hearts may be a-flutter. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
GEMINI

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23 – Dec 21)
For the early part of the year, your chances of success depended largely on whom you knew. Now it’s much more about who you are and what you can do. Although your friends are still very important to you, there’s no need to rely on them quite so much. Love and care for them, of course – but now’s the time to plough your own furrow.
There’s a price tag on everything these days – even the pursuit of pleasure. If you’ve been partying hard recently, it’s time to take a breath and give yourself a chance to build up those flagging energy levels. And if you’ve been on a mad spending spree, take a long, hard look at your credit card statements. Take care not to overstretch yourself – emotionally or financially.

(Dec 22 – Jan 20)
You may be slap bang in the middle of a very successful phase in your life – and isn’t that lovely? But be aware that your health could be on the delicate side. We know events are pretty exciting, but if you get caught up in a mad whirl, there could be a price to pay later. Don’t be ashamed to take a rest if you’re feeling tired – it’s exactly what your body needs.
You may not feel as though the state of your health is a number one priority, but – honestly – it is. Treat yourself to a few early nights, cut down on your alcohol intake and if you’ve been planning for ages to quit smoking, now is a brilliant time to stub out your last ciggie. Sorry if this sounds like a nagging nanny, but if you take care of yourself now, you’ll avoid problems in the coming months.

Hospital food needs a serving of common sense, says Dr Sarah Honess

short-sighted, not to mention environmentally suspect to transport cook-chill meals half-way around the country. I make tasty and nutritious meals for my family from fresh ingredients every day. The food is eaten when it is at its best, hot and fresh. If I had to box it up and drive it to Wales, I wouldn’t expect it to be quite so nice. It often seems necessary in situations like these to draft in an ‘expert’, a ‘food Tsar’ a celebrity chef say, used to producing top quality nosh with scant regard for cost, to advise the Government on what is surely nothing more than common sense. I don’t expect to eat Michelin starred food in hospital, just decent, hot, fresh, unfussy food which looks appetising and presentable.
Malnutrition is a serious problem in hospital. People are often at their most vulnerable, both emotionally and physiologically. Food can have a significant impact on physical recovery and mental state. Investing in food speeds recovery and ultimately saves money by reducing hospital stays. So what’s the answer? Back to basics I say. Local sourcing, on-site kitchens, accountability and responsibility coupled with an appreciation that food matters and needs proper investment in the product – rather than spending the money on packaging, transport and outsourcing. Dr Sarah trained in Medicine at King’s College, London, and now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.

haven’t had to cook myself is definitely one of my top ten fantasies (how things change when you have kids!) – and that includes hospital food. A few weeks in an open prison sometimes seems appealing, too – if only to avoid the relentless shopping, cooking, cleaning and washing that goes with motherhood, and perhaps the chance to read a book or two. I suspect the novelty might wear off after a bit, though. In my humble opinion, it all went wrong when services such as catering, cleaning, portering and laundry were outsourced, presumably in the name of economy. What was so wrong with a kitchen and a cook, providing food for their own hospital from locally sourced ingredients direct from local producers? It seems

A recent Channel 4 Dispatches programme investigated hospital food. It started as a blog by a hospitalised journalist, outraged and depressed by the standard of food he was served, and how it impacted on his health. As everyone knows, institutional food, whether it be in hospitals, prisons, schools or care homes is historically and legendarily generally poor. This is largely due to cost. Decent, tasty, fresh food costs money – as anyone who looks after themselves knows. But it is not as simple as that. I must just add as an aside, that as a busy working mum, the thought of being provided with any food at all that I
