From the Editor What’s your Christmas shopping strategy? I’ve come to the conclusion it’s a technique that divides us into two distinct groups – people for whom the whole thing is a mission and an adventure, and people who give it as little brain space as possible. And there’s an interesting sub-group among the first category who began the whole process during the last January sales, and completed it with cries of glee by about the middle of June. These delightful folk then sit back smugly as December gets into its stride, watching the rest of us tear frantically round the shops in search of those elusive pressies. I’ve always longed to be part of the second group of carefree souls, but somehow I’ve never been able to manage it. Actually, I do believe it’s a gender thing. Guys are brilliant at telling you they haven’t started on the gift list yet because, heck, it’s still only December 23rd and there’s plenty of time. They’re perfectly happy to dash into the local garage just as it’s closing on Christmas Eve and emerge with a couple of cans of festive windscreen de-icer or a set of adjustable spanners. I even know someone who leapt

into his local off licence at the eleventh hour and bought up the remaining stock of liqueur chocs as last ditch presents for his nieces and nephews – all of whom were under ten at the time. Needless to say, when faced with their irate parents on Christmas morning, he had a fair bit of explaining to do. I reckon Christmas shopping is an art. Some of us have got it, some haven’t and some probably never will. What amazes me, though, is how often Santa manages to get it spot on. But, then again, he does have all those elves to help him – and a whole year to get organised. Merry Christmas!

What’s cooking this Christmas? If you’re the one with the chef’s hat on this year, or you’ve just been roped in to peel the vegetables – have we got some recipe ideas for you!

Roll up for flavour at Colmers

For a real treat this year why not try a whole turkey, boned and rolled in its natural skin? You can do this yourself, but it cuts down on hassle if you leave it to a specialist butcher. At

Colmers in Ferring you can order your turkey ready boned and rolled – with or without one of their fabulous stuffings. These come in a choice of flavours, including sage and onion, plain chestnut or the more exotic cranberry and orange. All Colmers poultry is free range and guaranteed organic. Order yours now, by calling 01903 504327.

COLMERS Traditional Family Butchers • Organic West Country Meats • • Home cure organic bacon • Order • Wild Game • now for • Home made freshly baked pies • Christmas • Home cooked organic meats • • Olives & Mediterranean selection •

Cooking a boned turkey Allow about 25 minutes per lb (450g) plus 30 minutes cooking time. Place turkey on a wire rack over a pan half filled with water. Smear the top with a little butter and sprinkle lightly with salt, if wished. Top with 2 or 3 fresh bay leaves. Cover with foil and cook at 200C, Gas Mark 5 for 30 minutes. Reduce heat to 170C, Gas mark 4 for remainder of cooking time. Baste occasionally and top up water as necessary. About 30 minutes before the end of cooking, remove foil and pour off most of the stock to make gravy. Leave the turkey to rest for about 20 minutes before carving.

AND DID YOU KNOW?… there’s a tasty range of pies at Colmers, filled with gorgeous game and festive meats. Just the thing to go with salads, bubble and squeak or jacket potatoes on Boxing Day.

Vegetables – the stars of your Christmas dinner Christmas goes hand-in-hand with British veg – and at Riverford they trial, test and taste until they find the most flavoursome varieties to grow. Here are some tips on how to make those veg the stars of your festive feast.

Brussels sprouts Without the artificial sprays that protect conventionally-grown sprouts, Riverford’s organic ones may not look perfect. But because they grown everso-slowly, these sprouts taste much better – and wherever possible you’ll get them fieldfresh, still on the stalk. Soggy, overcooked sprouts are about as unappealing as it gets, so if you must cook them in water, avoid boiling and steam them as briefly as possible.

Open Mon, Wed, Sat 8am-1pm, Tues, Thur, Fri 8am-5pm. Closed 1pm-2pm. 6 The Pantiles, Ferringham Lane, South Ferring, Worthing BN12 5NE.

Parsnips can be ready by September, but Riverford waits for the first frosts before harvesting them. Cold weather causes some of the starch in the root to convert to sugar and greatly improves the flavour. For a new take on roasted parsnips, parboil them and roll in a mixture of flour and parmesan. Season well and roast in the oven with the turkey.

Tradition and chips – with a sprinkling of community spirit It’s refreshing to buy a takeaway from someone who really cares about the customer. When Mike and Helen took over the Broadwater Fish Bar in August, they worked hard to become part of the community. Mike’s a trained chef and has introduced lots of homemade food to the menu – fresh battered mushrooms, fishcakes, cauliflower cheese fritters – alongside lunchtime specials and traditional fish and chips, which is one of the healthiest takeaways around. They say, “For coeliacs, we sell Glu 2 Go gluten free products, with wet fish to cook at home.” They use best quality ingredients, cooking foods in separate pans and keeping the oil filtered for the best flavour. As part of their community involvement, Mike and Helen

turned their windows into art space for children, in aid of Help for Heroes with the best painting winning the artist a free meal. The Christmas theme supports a local charity http:// ciarasroom.squarespace.com For a chance to win free cod and chips, look out for their eye-catching rally car, advertising the shop. Instructions on how to win can be found under the wipers, on the ‘I’ve seen the Celica’ sticker. You’ll find Broadwater Fish Bar in 58 Broadwater Road. Call 01903 233000.

Nice Slice customers don’t need to cook on Sundays now as, from December, Karen is opening the café for breakfast and traditional Sunday lunch, including a nut roast for

vegetarians. Nice Slice has built up a reputation for its delicious cakes and lunchtime snacks, so regulars are already aware of its charm. If you haven’t been there yet, you’ll find them due south of the station level crossing at the bottom of the road. On Sunday December 12, however, roast lunch won’t be on the menu, as there will be a holistic fair at Nice Slice with gift stalls, too. Throughout December, Karen will also be selling Christmas cakes and other treats, but stocks are obviously limited, so make sure you don’t delay.

Traditional delights at Eclipse If you love scrumptious, traditional dishes, Eclipse cafe bar is definitely the place to be this Christmas. There’s a superb three course preChristmas lunch, served every day from December 6, right up until Christmas Eve, as well as a five-course dinner for party bookings every evening until December 23. On The Day itself, you can enjoy a slapup Christmas lunch, with five festive courses. It’s a mouth-watering menu. You could start with Pumpkin and Parsnip Soup, served with a hot baguette, or perhaps Pheasant Paté served on toast with caramelised red onion chutney. The star of the show is undoubtedly Roast Turkey with all the trimmings – but if you fancy a break with tradition, why not try Lamb Shank with rosemary, red wine and sun-dried tomatoes? And

we like the sound of Salmon with a Parmesan Crust, served with boiled potatoes and a vegetable medley. There are some drop dead gorgeous desserts, too. If you’re feeling too full for Christmas pud, you could find yourself tempted by Frosted Berry Pie with custard – or how about Orange and Chocolate Roulade with cream? Decisions, decisions… You’ll find Eclipse at 12-14 Goring Road. To book your table, call 01903 244111

14 Essential People

What will YOU be doing after Christmas Dinner? You’ve eaten the turkey and Christmas pud, cleared the dishes – what’s your favourite thing to do next? Here’s how the Essentially Worthing Team like to spend Christmas afternoon.

Gill Medway – Editor

Terri Germaine – Office Manager

Silly games are a favourite in my household. I’ll never forget the year we got all the puppets down from the loft and used them to play the memory game My Mum went to Brighton – each adding on a ridiculous shopping item as we went. Everyone did the craziest puppet voices, and as we got into our stride we were crying with laughter. Well, you had to be there…

After opening our presents and a lazy brunch I take my girls for a lovely Christmas day ride. Of course, the horses have first pick of the carrots – and if there are any left we’ll have some with our dinner.

Sue Boiling – Distribution Manager For the past few years we’ve been away for Christmas with the family, enjoying iced drinks on hot beaches and only eating our Christmas meal late in the day when it’s cooler. So this year will be a bit of an unknown quantity, as we’re staying at home. I just hope we’re not shovelling snow off the path.

Denise Tayler – Director of Advertising After walking off Christmas lunch on the beach nearby, I like to gather with family and friends and play Trivial Pursuit. As a person who dislikes wasting time, I feel I’m relaxing but learning something. That’s when I’m not chasing Alfie to retrieve the stolen turkey leftovers!

Miles Davies – Photographer On Christmas Day I’m chef. I start with scrambled egg and smoked salmon for breakfast, then cook the roast lunch. I belong to the ‘Keith Floyd’ school of cooking – I cook with wine and some goes in the food – so once lunch is over I’m ready for a coffee before snuggling into the armchair to watch the sort of television that isn’t too taxing on the brain.

Scifer, our cover artist Being just a 14-year-old boy at heart, I’ll probably be playing with the brand new games I’ve received as Christmas presents. I suppose I shall also have to grit my teeth and bear the endless rounds of Charades and Cluedo my family seem to go for. But at least it will end with a nice evening of watching DVDs with the family… and perhaps a glass of Christmas cheer. Happy holidays, folks!

Wendy Greene – Features Editor Alfie – Office Cat As we see it Alfie has two choices – either trace the source of those lovely meaty smells or find a lap to sleep on. If both options fail, he can always disrupt Mum’s Trivial Pursuit game.

I’m usually with family members, and after we’ve phoned our more distant relatives, we sometimes get out the family photos and remember when the children were small and Dad dressed as Santa. In those days, Mum used to suggest “a brisk walk in stout shoes” after lunch.

Christmas delights at Woodstock Day Nursery There’s a real buzz in the air at Woodstock Day Nursery, as the thrill of Christmas gathers pace. The children are busy practising their Nativity Play at St George’s Church and learning all kinds of new songs. With parties coming up, they can hardly contain their excitement – especially as Father Christmas himself has promised to fly in for an early visit. Every month an artist comes to the nursery to bring new ideas and inspiration to the children’s daily creative activities – and this month Nadia has helped them create a special Christmas tree for the festival at St George’s. Regular visitors pop into Woodstock every week to share their skills. These include a musician playing the accordion,

and the children love to dance and join in with the songs. Woodstock has a large safe garden with playhouses, sand pit, water play and climbing frame – and even at this time of year there’s plenty of fun to be had in the fresh air. There’s a high ratio of qualified staff, and the nursery has its own Early Years Professional, so you can be sure your pre-schoolers are happy, safe and enjoying the festive season to the full. To find out more about what Woodstock has to offer babies and pre-schoolers, call 01903 233655.

Make Christmas purr-fect

Christmas can be a stressful time for cats, warns Amanda, Veterinary Surgeon at Cat’s Whiskers Veterinary Clinic Cats are very sensitive to change in their environment – putting up Christmas decorations and a tree, for example, can interfere with the scent marks left by your cat and may cause him stress. Changes in routine can also be

a potential problem for your cat, and friends and family visiting can cause distress. Some signs of stress are easy to detect – increased scratching activity shows your cat is scratch marking to increase the number of scent signals in the environment. Urine marking and aggression can be a result of very stressful situations. Other signs, such as over grooming, changes in food intake and decreased levels of activity and play are more subtle and may be more difficult to link with stress. Cats react to stress in a number of ways and to a varying degree. Some are able to cope very well with a change in their environment. Others will have problems coping with the changes Christmas brings and are more likely to suffer acute stress which can have a real impact on their health causing problems such as cystitis, dermatological conditions and anorexia. If you are worried about your cat’s stress levels during the festive period or if you believe your cat is suffering from any of the medical conditions discussed above, please contact the clinic and we will recommend suitable options which may include pheromonatherapy and behaviour therapy if appropriate.

Cat’s Whiskers Veterinary Clinic is at 125 South Farm Road. Call 01903 830 577, email info@cwvet.co.uk or visit www.cwvet.co.uk for information and help.

Climbers and nibblers Make sure your festive plans are pet friendly • Christmas trees can be as dangerous to pets as they are to young children. Many cats and some dogs will see the tree as a great climbing frame, so consider placing the tree in a room where you can close the door when you’re unable to police the festivities. • Mistletoe is poisonous to pets, so make sure you hang it out of reach and clear up any falling berries or leaves. • Electric lights, cables and mains adaptors are easily chewed. Small pets such as rabbits, rats, hamsters and gerbils are particularly adept nibblers, so don’t allow them to roam free in a room where there are lots of wires about. • Beware of chocolate! It contains a substance called theobromine – perfectly ok for us, but it can be fatal for both cats and dogs. Less than 100g of cocoa powder is enough to kill a 30kg Labrador – so keep it out of pets’ reach at all times.

• You’ll be having fun with friends and relatives, but pets may not enjoy the experience quite so much – and remember, not everyone likes pets. Make sure your pets have the opportunity to get away from all the action, especially if they’re not used to children. • If you’re planning a firework party over Christmas and New Year, make sure your pets have a safe place to shelter and/ or sedatives. A few drops of rescue remedy added to their drinking water is often recommended by experts. • Beware the Boxing Day blues! Over-indulgence with treats and leftovers is never a good idea – especially for our pets. Many vets tell us they’re often snowed under directly after Christmas, with animals suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting. Never give cooked bones to pets, either, as these can splinter and cause injury to the mouth or intestines.

Who cares at Christmas? The Salvation Army – that’s who. They’ve teamed up with Worthing Food Bank to provide special Christmas hampers for local families in crisis – and expect to send out more than a hundred this year. The hampers will be chock full of tinned goods as well as toys and gifts for children – and, of course, donations are always welcome. If you’d like to donate toys in particular, come along to The Salvation Army’s Toy Service on Sunday December 5, where you can sing carols and add to the gift collection. Families can be in crisis at Christmas for all sorts of reasons, and many are grateful for the help and support given by organisations like the Food Bank and The Salvation Army. Homeless people referred to them will also be fed and given a warm welcome. The volunteers at Welcome In café work hard all year round,

Wear the Date Band and I’ll take you there meet local people

It’s a whole new dating idea, says Lisa If you’re single, you’ll know the scenario. You spot someone gorgeous at a club, at the gym or in the supermarket, and you’d love to get to know them better. But how can you go up and introduce yourself? Suppose they’re already in a relationship – or just don’t want to know? Date Band is a brilliant new idea, and it’s been developed just for you. Here’s how it works. It’s not only a brand new online dating service – there’s a funky, yet subtle band you wear on your wrist, so others will know you’re single and up for grabs.

There’s more. Next time you see someone you’d like to date, just place a Date Band ICU card under their windscreen or somewhere equally visible. You can then retreat if you’re feeling shy, knowing that person has the Date Band website address and your user name, so they can check you out online. But don’t worry if the person is in a relationship – there’s a small disclaimer on the back of the card to avoid any embarrassment. Date Band is very different from traditional websites. You’ll be meeting people in and around where you live and work. There’s also an iPhone app you can download and view details of members who might be standing behind you in the supermarket queue. And, of course, you can communicate all you like through the website. Get to know people by chatting and messaging – and who knows where it may lead? Like to find out more about joining Date Band? Call Lisa on 0333 055 7138 or check out the website at www.dateband.com.

Let me be your chauffer, says David Matthew of Absolute Anywhere Having worked as a taxi driver in Worthing and transport manager in my father’s company – which included driving a truck across the UK and Europe – I decided to start my own business and launched Absolute Anywhere in January 2010. I now enjoy driving for the residents of Worthing, especially older folk and those needing to transport pets. I run very clean, luxurious cars at excellent rates and have a ‘call or text back’ service, which can help those with hearing impairment. Being polite, reliable, smart and organised is very important to my business. I always get out of the car to open the door for my passengers and help with any baggage.

My work varies greatly, from a trip to the doctors or shopping to taking a bridal party to Grimsby. I chose the name as I am happy to go ‘absolute(ly) anywhere’, even to Europe. Much of my work involves airports and seaport transfers. Passengers, especially the younger ones, often enjoy using the DVD player. I look forward to providing a reliable, flexible chauffeur service to the residents of Worthing and surrounding areas for many more years. For more details visit www.absoluteanywhere.com or call 07765 438 192 to book.

Chomp with confidence this Christmas

Right on time

Says Paul Cullen at The Denture Studio

Since taking over the

With so many good things to munch, crunch and nibble over the festive season, no-one wants trouble with their dentures. So if you suspect your old ones are wearing out, you’ll need to change them in good time. You should do this around every five to eight years, depending on the quality of the teeth on the plate. Over the years, your gums will have changed shape. Dentures need adjusting throughout their life in your mouth, so don’t go on suffering in silence – it could ruin your Christmas. If your dentures have been a bit loose lately, but you’re on a slim budget, don’t despair. You may like to consider having your old ones re-lined – this will certainly improve the fit.

And to keep those dentures in tip top condition, soak them for no more than 10 minutes and brush with an ordinary nailbrush – it’s much easier to grip than a toothbrush and does a more efficient job. To book an appointment with Paul at The Denture Studio, call 01342 322171.

We’re there for you 24/7, says Steve of Starlight Taxis

management of Starlight in March, we’ve tried to ensure that we offer special facilities to make life easier for our customers. Firstly, we will give you a call-back when we reach you, so there’s no need to stand outside in the cold. We give realistic times, so you know just how long you can take to get ready, say your goodbyes or shut down the computer. We’ve made sure everything is just right for modern requirements. We accept credit cards and take bookings via our website.

Take forty winks! Doctors agree that one of the best ways to beat that preChristmas fatigue is to take a short nap. If you have a hectic work schedule or you’re a parent with a young child who wakes a lot in the night, you’re probably feeling frazzled as festive preparations start hotting up. Or perhaps you’re a bit older, and just aren’t sleeping as well as you used to. A nap is a good way to re-charge your batteries. Try taking one at roughly the same time each day—and for no more than an hour.

Lights and laughter at The Shelley Everyone at The Shelley residential care home is looking forward to yet another fun-filled Christmas – and everyone on the staff has been super-busy getting the decorations organised. Take a look at these pictures and you’ll see what we mean.

Is it Christmas yet? Festive figures pop out from every corner – just to remind everyone that Santa’s on his way.

Ablaze with lights – this sparkling festive display certainly makes it hard to miss The Shelley. Who needs real icicles? Everyone at The Shelley takes their decorations seriously. There’s always a huge Christmas tree in the lounge – and lots of smaller versions like this, all over the house.

Christmas at The Shelley is especially wonderful, it’s just one other thing that makes us different. Come visit us in the New Year.

“A little of what you fancy does you good!” There’s lots happening on the arts scene this Christmas. Check out the events on this page and pick your favourite Here’s the ideal chance to help recreate the glory days of the British Music Hall. Music Theatre 2000, under the musical direction of Mr Simon Gray, will be presenting an Old Time Music Hall at the Barn Theatre in Southwick on Friday December 17 and Saturday December 18 at 7.30pm. The programme features well-known songs made popular by famous Victorian and Edwardian singers, as well as some carols and festive songs – so come along in costume, if you like, and join in. The cast is headed by Miss Jeannie Harris who has appeared in many West End musicals. And Chairman Mr Allan Cardew will be keeping a tight rein on the proceedings.

The Gallery now sells a great selection of crafts to buy from stock or to order. Fashion accessories are popular, and four artists offer jewellery, hats and scarves. If you still want more, there’s wood turning from Jeff, handpainted glass from Nina, soap and pot pourri from Rosalind and candles from Lynne. Belinda of Inspired by the Sea makes lavender bags, doorstops, cushions and tote bags which are – guess what? – inspired by the sea. There are Christmas decoration items from Mary and bespoke wreaths from Alison, but if you want to make your own gifts, there’s Sue with Chalkhill Blue Fabrics.

There’s plenty of choice for children including Caroline’s stocking filler toys, such as finger puppets and pin-the-tailon-Rudolph games. With her prices starting at 40p you won’t break the bank. That was the year, that was… Pete McIntosh glances back at 2010

So here we are again at the end of yet another year. It doesn’t seem like five minutes since I was writing the column for the January issue and predicting an early FA Cup exit for Manchester City. And one year on, City are no better – we just pay our players slightly more. I should really start by welcoming Chris Copsey to

the Breakfast Show at Splash FM. Chris has ‘previous’ when it comes to getting up at a ridiculous time and assures us all that he is naturally a morning person. I’ll happily let him leave his bed at roughly the same time I get into mine. If Coppo is on your Christmas list, I’m sure a new alarm clock and a heavy duty ice scraper will both come in more than handy! The new look Breakfast Show will, of course, continue you to bring the very best local news and travel updates, a great selection of music, and then there’s our brand new competition, The Famous Five. For the old school among you, this has nothing to do with Enid Blyton and everything to do with the boss digging deep into his pockets and giving you the chance to win a nice wad of hard

Looking back on 2010, it’s been another exciting year at Splash FM. We’ve had some great guests pass through our doors – including Diana Vickers, Scissor Sisters, The Saturdays, The Script, Ellie Goulding and Manic Street Preachers. Coppo was joined on the Retro Show by Mick Hucknall, Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet, and the boys from A-Ha who have just retired after 25 years of making music. Coppo was also looking forward to being joined by George Michael – but that interview never happened, due to George being ‘unexpectedly detained’ back in September.

30 Essential Zodiac A fun, friendly look at what’s in the stars for you in December

AQUARIUS (Jan 21 – Feb 19)

You may have felt overburdened at work throughout the past year, so you’ll be relieved to know there are definite opportunities on the horizon for a change of job. You’re all set for a serious health kick, too – perhaps with a new, preChristmas diet or exercise regime. Just make sure you don’t undo all the good work over the holiday period – and treat those mince pies with the respect they deserve.

PISCES

(Feb 20 – March 20) You’ve been negotiating your way through a period of compromise recently, and the good news is – those days are nearly over. No more walking on eggshells – it’s time to start living on your own terms, creating circumstances and conditions to suit you. You’re full of good ideas, and people are listening to them – at long last.

ARIES

(March 21 – April 20) This is a brilliant month for your career, with pay rises and promotions on the agenda. People respect your views, so now’s the time to push forward boldly and achieve those goals you set yourself. Your financial judgment is sound, and this could be a good time to pay off any outstanding debts, so you can begin the New Year with a clean slate. Romance is still a tad delicate, so tread carefully.

TAURUS

(April 21 – May 21)

LEO

(July 24 – Aug 23) You’re feeling on top of the world this month, with high energy levels buoying up your famous degree of optimism. If you’re single there’s a definite opportunity for romance from a surprising source, so keep an open mind and don’t miss out. A mini-drama in the life of a friend could test your patience in a big way, so remember to stay calm as well as supportive.

VIRGO

(Aug 24 – Sept 23) You’ve been concentrating hard on family matters recently, and this phase of your life is set to continue for a while yet. Keep listening and someone will love you for it. At work there could be a few changes in the pipeline, so don’t make any hasty decisions. And if you handle high-tech gadgetry, beware of gremlins in the works!

LIBRA

(Sept 24 – Oct 23) You’re feeling in need of a spot of TLC this month, so take time to snuggle in with your beloved. After all, a quiet, romantic evening at home is worth a dozen nights on the razzle. In all the Christmas preparations it’s important to pace yourself and not get overtired. And at work the rules of the game are changing, so make sure you’re prepared for whatever transpires.

SCORPIO

(Oct 24 – Nov 22)

You’ve always been a savvy shopper and believe in getting your money’s worth. It’s a character trait that will stand you in good stead this month, provided you get organised with that Christmas list and don’t leave everything to the last minute. Financial changes are waiting on the horizon, but it’s best to hold on until next month before you implement them.

December is a lovely, happy month for Scorpios, and if your love life has been experiencing a few hiccups recently, you’ll be glad to know everything is back on track. You’re feeling glamorous and stylish, so get out there and socialise to your heart’s content. If you’re single, there’s romance in the air, but don’t chase after Cupid’s arrows. They’ll find you when they’re good and ready.

GEMINI

SAGITTARIUS

(May 22 – June 21)

(Nov 23 – Dec 21)

The pace of life is hotting up – not just for you, but for everyone around you. This means you need to keep a tight hold of the plot and make sure you’re not being left behind. There may be unresolved dilemmas within your immediate family circle, but don’t let these worry you unduly. There’s nothing in your life that won’t sort itself out, given time.

Although your health and energy levels are pretty good, take care not to overdo the partying, or you’ll pay the price later in the month. Love affairs, both serious and light-hearted, may hit a temporary bump in the road. It’s a testing time for relationships and you may discover that one of you, at least, has some explaining to do.

CANCER

CAPRICORN

“There’s a lot of it about.” Bugs abound at this time of year, and you could be in for a bout of sniffles in the latter part of the month. Cosset yourself, stay warm and fend off the bugs as best you can. Take a long, hard look at your Christmas budget and be careful not to overspend. You’re well known for your thoughtfulness, so presents don’t have to be pricey.

You’ve been learning a lot this year about the true nature of wealth, and how to use your undoubted talents to gain what you need. As the year comes to an end, it’s time to take stock and discover how to take a bolder approach to financial matters. The way to make your savings work for you is much clearer now, and you’ll soon be able to set some realistic goals for 2011.

(June 22 – July 23)

(Dec 22 – Jan 20)

Essential Dr Sarah 31

And Dr Sarah has the last word…

As this is December’s column, it might be considered only right and fitting to choose a seasonal, festive theme. But, frankly – and as I sit down to write it’s still November – I must confess I’m sick of it already. Mince pies have been in the shops since the kids went back to school, the shelves are already groaning with all sorts of unnecessary novelty tat and TV channels are systematically brainwashing my impressionable offspring into demanding expensive gifts. When a four

Bah, Humbug! Dr Sarah’s not exactly in the mood for the festive season year old asks for an iphone instead of a tangerine and a spinning top, you have to wonder if you’ve slipped up somewhere as a parent. Instead of concentrating on what really matters, like our families, children and the vulnerable in our communities, it’s all too easy to feel like a failure if we do not conform to the media mirage of a perfect Christmas. Our homes are supposed to be warm and welcoming, bedecked in small, (tasteful) twinkly lights and smelling of (home made) mulled wine and Nigella’s mince pies. Our children should be appropriately excited without filling every waking hour musing through the Argos catalogue to find the perfect, ghastly plastic monstrosity. And, somewhere in the midst of

all the frenzy, we are supposed to fashion hand-crafted cards out of doilies or, worse still, use our toddler’s hand (borrow one if necessary) to make green hand prints in the shape of a Christmas tree to charm friends and relatives… I only wish going to work provided some relief. We spend most of December wading through over-madeup and under-dressed folk in various pitiful states after the office Christmas bash, road traffic accident victims who had a cherry brandy too many – not to mention inconvenient elders who have been dumped in hospital to make way for the tree. I’ve never minded working New Year’s Eve, though. It has a grim jollity about it. My best friend is also an ED doctor in Sheffield and we ran

an (unofficial) North versus South Best Dressed Lady competition. I only mention this because a) I won with my entry – an amply proportioned girl wearing – or very nearly – a gold sequined hot-pant/ boob-tube combo and b) as a warning to young women up and down the land to consider their outfits sober and in a fulllength mirror before they leave the house on New Year’s Eve! So, for this December’s column I will most definitely NOT be covering anything at all to do with the forthcoming festivities… MERRY… YOU-KNOW-WHAT! Dr Sarah trained in Medicine at King’s College, London, and now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.
