It wasn’t until about two years ago, when I first acquired my very own canine pal that I came to understand how all that tail-wagging and slavish devotion really works. I hate to say it, but husbands, boyfriends, children and best mates really don’t have a clue when it comes to unconditional adoration. Who else can be relied upon to devise a strategy of licking your nose at 6.30am as a fond wakeup call? Who else can be guaranteed to plonk himself on your lap and obscure your view of 90% of the TV screen during the final of Strictly? Your dog, that’s who. Of course, for all these demonstrations of True Love, you have to reward him. And in his world, the only possible reward begins with W. Dare I speak the word aloud without provoking maniacal leaping about the house? Oh, go on, then. Walkies… Hugo, our Jack Russell picks up on every clue – from the very obvious (getting the lead down from the peg in the hall) to the more subtle (stuffing a couple of poo bags in your pocket). And as long as you don’t insist on making him wear his coat – sartorial

elegance isn’t his forte – he’s keen to get down to Goring Gap at any time of day. What’s great about these walks isn’t just the sniffing, the rolling over, the leaping, the games of chase with other dogs – although these are definitely top of Hugo’s list. But I’ve discovered a whole new world of chatty dog owners – delightful people who like nothing better than to swap details of their pet’s age, breed and little foibles. Let me tell you – it beats any Mother and Toddler club hands down. But, then… it’s been a while!

Join in the fun – it’s the Ashdown Club’s sponsored Spring Walk
Fundraisers at the Ashdown Club are busy planning their sponsored walk along Worthing seafront as part of an ‘Around the World’ challenge. The entire project aims to clock up a massive 25,000 miles from combined events in 2010 and 2011. It’s all happening on Sunday March 20 at 2pm, when Ashdown families and friends will be walking on a sponsored two-mile round trip starting and finishing at Beach House grounds.
The Ashdown Club supports children and young people aged 5 to 18 with conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, Down’s Syndrome, ADHD, Autism and other special needs – as well as their parents and carers. The club began 12 years ago with Saturday sessions on a first come, first served basis. Ashdown now works with over 70 families at a specially equipped centre where children enjoy stimulating fun sessions which give their parents and carers a muchneeded break. Groups of children with a range of different special needs have the opportunity to hang out with friends and enjoy a wide range of activities, guided and supported by specially trained staff. Trips such as bowling, visiting the Sealife Centre or an adventure playground would be virtually impossible without special assistance.

There are sessions on Saturdays and during the school holidays – and there’s also a weekly youth club for 23 teenagers, with one exciting outing every month. Ashdown also runs a siblings service, providing an opportunity for the brothers and sisters of young people with special needs to meet, share experiences, have a break from caring responsibilities, and most importantly, have fun. The Ashdown Club has no permanent funding and is supported by Guild Care, a well known local charity which has been supporting older people and carers in Worthing since 1933. An appeal was launched last year for £20,000 to cover the club’s core running costs, such as energy, maintenance and petrol for minibuses. Money also has to be raised for salaries for fully trained staff and for training for volunteers. Can you help?

Meat and ten veg A healthy, thrifty and ethical way to eat in 2011 Many of us eat more meat than is good for us and the planet. So how can we eat it in a sensible way and save money, too? Riverford’s Bacon, Leek & Potato Gratin, serves 6 2 leeks, sliced 1 knob of butter 100g bacon, cooked and chopped 300ml double cream 100ml milk 2 garlic cloves, crushed 800g potatoes, peeled and cut into 2-3mm thick slices 1-2 tbsp freshly grated parmesan sea salt and black pepper Sweat the leeks in butter for 10 minutes, then add the bacon and garlic. Add the cream and milk and bring to the boil. Season and mix in the potatoes. Transfer to a gratin dish. Cover with foil and bake at 180°C
for about 50 minutes, until potatoes are tender. Remove the foil, sprinkle with parmesan and bake for another 10 minutes, until golden brown.

Happy Birthday to Woods – they’re celebrating 40 years in the travel industry “We’ve also found that our door-to-door service by taxi to the coach pick up point has proved to be popular for many people across Sussex and Hampshire, especially for the older members of our community.”
It all began in 1971 with two London boys and two ZephyrZodiacs, providing quality taxi services from a small office in Aldwick. Now the company, Woods Travel Limited, runs the premier private coach hire service on the Sussex coast, has a full international tour programme, an ABTA bonded independent travel agency, runs the Sussex Cruise Club and employs over 45 people. Roger Elsmere and Bill Wood started the company with the aim of being the best – and they’ve always kept that goal in sight. After Bill’s death, Roger took sole charge of the company and by 1992 had opened a second side to the business, Woods Holidays Limited, an ABTA travel agency that was soon bonded with ATOL and IATA. The Sussex Cruise Club was added to the Woods group in January 2008 to highlight the travel agency’s cruising expertise and has gone from strength to strength.
The tour programme began in 1982 offering just five UK destinations. 2010 has seen over 125 departures, carrying over 6,500 passengers to various destinations, ranging from The Isles of Scilly to Eastbourne to the Austrian Lakes. The day excursion programme covers everything from train rides to boat trips, gardens to London shows (limited pick up area). And now, with their Ruby Anniversary fast approaching, Roger believes his company can cater for the modern-day traveller. “Woods will be the popular choice this year because people are becoming more demanding about what they want from their holidays,” he told us. “Everyone’s looking for a quality package which still represents excellent value for money. Cats may seem independent creatures but the more you get to know them, the more you come to realise they really do rely on you for mental stimulation and affection. Kittens and young cats are very playful so give them an assortment of toys to keep them occupied and exercised. These need not be expensive – every kitten loves a cardboard box to play in – and it’s a great way to get to know and trust each other. Scratching posts allow natural scratching behaviour without damaging furniture. Equally important to your cat’s happiness are regular suitable meals, with a constant supply of fresh water, and their own clean, comfortable bed. Provide your cat with outdoor access or be prepared to empty and clean a litter tray on a daily basis. Regular grooming is important – a daily task with long-haired cats. All other essentials will be dealt with by

Littlehampton Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) are planning to get out and about in the local community, by climbing aboard the Stagecoach bus network. This gives police officers a great chance to say hello to passengers and discuss any issues they may have. The initiative is part of an ongoing policy operated by the PCSO team to interact and meet as many people as possible in the community. Twelve local PCSOs who patrol the Littlehampton area have been given free travel on the buses.
“The officers will be welcomed by our drivers,” says Adam Keen, Operations Manager for Stagecoach. “We have very few safety and security issues on our network, but the frequent presence of the PCSOs will help create a good rapport with our drivers and controllers. I believe this initiative will provide a perfect platform for the community to interact on an informal basis.” And West Downs Community Engagement Sergeant, Peter Allan comments: “We hope that the PCSOs will be able to meet more people in the relatively relaxed environment of the bus. It’s important we can engage in a two-way information flow with the community face to face, as well as through newsletters and websites.”

Secret Diaries exhibition at local libraries West Sussex Libraries are celebrating Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) History Month with some free events. And the Library Service has been working with West Sussex County Council’s LGBT Staff Group to host a series of talks by authors and performers. On Wednesday February 9 author Helena Whitbread visits Shoreham Library, to discuss her book, The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister, a selection of the diaries of a 19th century landowner – a lesbian in a time where such matters were neither discussed nor recognised.

Romantic memories at The Shelley
Almost everyone remembers that magic moment when they first met the love of their life – and residents at The Shelley are no exception. We asked them for some romantic reminiscences, and here’s what they told us. One gentleman grew up in London’s East End and ran his own tailoring business.
He had a twin brother who began dating a lovely girl, only to discover that she was also a twin. His brother, a born matchmaker told him: “I’ve just found your future wife for you.” He introduced the pair, with instant success. The brothers double dated the sisters, proposed to them and enjoyed a double wedding.
“We were happily married for 68 years!” he tells us. Another gentleman met the love of his life while they were still at school. They were childhood sweethearts until his family decided to emigrate to Australia, and the pair lost touch. “I grew up and got married in Australia, and didn’t return to England until my wife died, 25 years later,” he says. “Imagine the amazing coincidence when I met our new neighbours – and found my childhood sweetheart living next door! It was like a dream come true to find each other again – and, of course we were married.” During World War II girls often wrote to guys in the Forces, building relationships through their words on paper. One Shelley resident tells how she became firm pen-friends
with a soldier, even though they had never met. “We felt as though we knew one another really well, though,” she says. “And when we met after the war, we clicked straight away and got married.” Brilliant human stories like this are what makes the world go round. And it’s great to look back on those far-off days, when love was everywhere and crept up on us when we were least expecting it. Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone at The Shelley!

Having trouble dropping off? Don’t bother counting sheep – try these top tips instead • Don’t drink coffee or cola after 2pm. The effects of the caffeine they contain can last for hours. Try redbush or herb tea as a calmer alternative.

Avoid drinking alcohol at bedtime. Although it may relax you at first, it’s actually a stimulant, so you’ll wake up again later. And it’s a diuretic, so it’ll make you need the loo. • Make sure your bedroom is cool and dark. Your brain tries to reduce your body temperature at night to slow down your metabolism – so aim for a bedroom temperature of about 16 degrees C.
• Soak in a warm bath. Your temperature will increase slightly and then fall – helping you to drop off. If you’re feeling achy, the warmth will also help relax stiff muscles. • Only go to bed when you feel really sleepy. If you can’t drop off within about 20 minutes, don’t lie there worrying about it. Get up and do something you find relaxing, like listening to calming music or reading.

Chris Copsey remembered Rik Scott pays tribute to his friend and Splash FM colleague, who passed away on January 11 Magazine columns like this have to be written a few weeks in advance, and as I write it’s the Monday after Chris passed away. Grey clouds cover the sky like a blanket, and by some strange coincidence it’s been like this since we heard the sad news late on Tuesday January 11. I’ve just spent a good 30 minutes reading through some of the many tributes left to Coppo at our website. Listeners, recent colleagues and names from the past are all united in wishing to express their regret at his passing. They’ve been sharing stories, bringing together different aspects of Chris’s life so we can all appreciate the man we’ve lost. In the radio industry we live a pretty nomadic lifestyle – with some of us moving from station to station every couple of years or so. Stoke, Newcastle, Manchester, Spain,
New Zealand… Chris’s former colleagues are dotted all over the place. Chris though, was the exception. Sussex was his manor. Chris was part of the team at our first commercial radio station, Southern Sound. But radio being radio, there’s always someone these days with a tape or mp3 of DJ’s at work so we can be sure that Chris’s work will live on. A dedicated family man, his show on a Monday would be full of tales of how he’d spent his weekend ferrying Charlie and Jess round to different sporting events. He was a tireless school governor and charity worker – and the tributes from local and national charities show there’s a big hole to be filled.

Dr Sarah has the last word… Most chaps reading this may struggle to pull into the petrol station on Feb 14 to grab a sad bunch of windswept blue chrysanths (don’t bother, it’ll only make it worse, much worse). Giving your actual heart to someone, rather than a soppy card or half-meant pseudo-romantic gesture, is the subject of my monthly muse and albeit tenuous link with Valentine’s Day, which since I was nine and fancied a spotty boy on the school bus, has been almost exclusively disappointing. The Transplant and Transfusion service rang me at home the other day, and in a scene reminiscent of the Monty Python Organ Donor sketch, I told them they couldn’t have my liver on account of my

Since the lad on the other end was about 12 and probably in a call centre in Mumbai, there was an awkward pause as my ‘joke’ fell like the proverbial lead balloon, and I visualised him mouthing ‘nutter’, and pointing down the receiver. I, like many others regularly give blood, on the basis that if I expect to get it when I need it then I should be prepared to give it when I don’t. Similarly, when I’m dead I shall be happy to donate any bits that might serve someone else and that aren’t pickled in Harvey’s Bristol Cream. Exceptionally, I might even be persuaded to part with a nonessential or duplicate organ to someone I love very much indeed so that they might live long enough to buy me some blue chrysanths. Of course there are more people alive needing
replacement organs than suitable live or dead donors. In many places this leads to the illegal ‘harvesting’ and trafficking of body parts, usually from the healthy poor for the benefit of sick, wealthy recipients. I read an article last week, again proposing the legalisation of live organ sale, and I’ve had a bit of an ethical wrestle with it. There is a clear utilitarian argument for too much demand, not enough supply. Legalising organ trade would almost instantly remove the supply problem and meet demand. In addition to this, the illegal trade would dry up and strangle the black market. All good. And yet… I believe, as with many good principles, the Law of Unintended Consequences would come into play. The current organ donor system would cease to exist, and the goodwill that goes

with it, in favour of a money driven market. People would be tempted to sell a kidney to pay for a holiday, car, conservatory or credit card debts. I’m not religious but I don’t believe in frivolous disrespect of the integrity of the human body. I feel deeply uncomfortable that, however you dress it up, the supply of organs would still be mostly from people in some sort of financial difficulty. The supply problem has to be tackled through education and by encouraging more people to give their organs for use by others when they have no further need themselves. Give someone your heart this Valentine’s Day. Get a Donor Card. Dr Sarah trained in Medicine at King’s College, London, and now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.
