From the Editor Love me, love my dog. It wasn’t until about two years ago, when I first acquired my very own canine pal that I came to understand how all that tail-wagging and slavish devotion really works. I hate to say it, but husbands, boyfriends, children and best mates really don’t have a clue when it comes to unconditional adoration. Who else can be relied upon to devise a strategy of licking your nose at 6.30am as a fond wakeup call? Who else can be guaranteed to plonk himself on your lap and obscure your view of 90% of the TV screen during the final of Strictly? Your dog, that’s who. Of course, for all these demonstrations of True Love, you have to reward him. And in his world, the only possible reward begins with W. Dare I speak the word aloud without provoking maniacal leaping about the house? Oh, go on, then. Walkies… Hugo, our Jack Russell picks up on every clue – from the very obvious (getting the lead down from the peg in the hall) to the more subtle (stuffing a couple of poo bags in your pocket). And as long as you don’t insist on making him wear his coat – sartorial

elegance isn’t his forte – he’s keen to get down to Goring Gap at any time of day. What’s great about these walks isn’t just the sniffing, the rolling over, the leaping, the games of chase with other dogs – although these are definitely top of Hugo’s list. But I’ve discovered a whole new world of chatty dog owners – delightful people who like nothing better than to swap details of their pet’s age, breed and little foibles. Let me tell you – it beats any Mother and Toddler club hands down. But, then… it’s been a while!

Getting your loft insulated?

It’s probably full of a heap of junk you don’t need, says Garfy at Star Solutions If the thought of climbing the loft ladder fills you with dread, or your car has been banished to the driveway because you just can’t fit it into the garage – you could be in need of a major clear out session. Garages, sheds and loft areas are notorious for accumulating mountains of stuff you don’t need, and for most of us, it’s a matter of “out of sight, out of mind.” But if you’re having loft insulation, you can’t put it off any longer. Let’s get real, and make this the time of year you

get to grips with it all. At Star Solutions we offer a complete clearance service, from single items to the full works – disposing of your unwanted clutter simply, efficiently and safely. I do all the work, so you don’t have to lift a finger – and you can even share the job with a neighbour. What’s more, I’m a licensed waste carrier, so you can be sure everything will be properly disposed of, in line with environmental waste regulations. My advice is – clear your loft, shed or garage (as well as your conscience) and get your car back where it belongs! Garfy is an ex-police officer and ambulance driver. He’s not only completely reliable, he prides himself on a friendly, personal approach to the whole business of lifting and shifting. He also offers an excellent removal service. Call Star Solutions on 07748 023923 or email starsolutionsman@aol.com for advice and a free estimate.

Join in the fun – it’s the Ashdown Club’s sponsored Spring Walk

Fundraisers at the Ashdown Club are busy planning their sponsored walk along Worthing seafront as part of an ‘Around the World’ challenge. The entire project aims to clock up a massive 25,000 miles from combined events in 2010 and 2011. It’s all happening on Sunday March 20 at 2pm, when Ashdown families and friends will be walking on a sponsored two-mile round trip starting and finishing at Beach House grounds.

The Ashdown Club supports children and young people aged 5 to 18 with conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, Down’s Syndrome, ADHD, Autism and other special needs – as well as their parents and carers. The club began 12 years ago with Saturday sessions on a first come, first served basis. Ashdown now works with over 70 families at a specially equipped centre where children enjoy stimulating fun sessions which give their parents and carers a muchneeded break. Groups of children with a range of different special needs have the opportunity to hang out with friends and enjoy a wide range of activities, guided and supported by specially trained staff. Trips such as bowling, visiting the Sealife Centre or an adventure playground would be virtually impossible without special assistance.

Care homes with nursing in Worthing and Tarring

Ashmount

Southey Road, Worthing ~ 01903 528500 ashmount@guildcare.org

Just five minutes from the sea and in a peaceful part of Worthing, our friendly and relaxed home offers quality residential and nursing places for state funded and private clients.

There are sessions on Saturdays and during the school holidays – and there’s also a weekly youth club for 23 teenagers, with one exciting outing every month. Ashdown also runs a siblings service, providing an opportunity for the brothers and sisters of young people with special needs to meet, share experiences, have a break from caring responsibilities, and most importantly, have fun. The Ashdown Club has no permanent funding and is supported by Guild Care, a well known local charity which has been supporting older people and carers in Worthing since 1933. An appeal was launched last year for £20,000 to cover the club’s core running costs, such as energy, maintenance and petrol for minibuses. Money also has to be raised for salaries for fully trained staff and for training for volunteers. Can you help?

Perhaps you could support Ashdown by holding a coffee morning, a bring-and-buy sale, a disco, car wash or a summer fair. Or you could sign up for regular giving every month. If you’d like to get involved in a really worthy cause, call the Fundraising Team 01903 528630 for more details. And if you’d like to find out more about the Ashdown Club, visit the website at www.ashdownclub.org.

Essential Eating 11

Meat and ten veg A healthy, thrifty and ethical way to eat in 2011 Many of us eat more meat than is good for us and the planet. So how can we eat it in a sensible way and save money, too? Organic vegbox company Riverford on Norton Farm believes that eating better quality, higher-welfare meat, less often and in smaller quantities is a healthy, thrifty and ethical way to eat this year. “Meat and ten veg is our philosophy,” say Michelle and Stuart, who deliver Riverford vegboxes in Worthing. “Eat a small amount of good quality, ideally organic, meat and let

the veg be the star of the show. It also makes good economic sense. A steak supper for six is likely to be painful on the wallet – a beef stir fry packed with vegetables is not.” Riverford works with farmers over the long term, so it knows where the livestock comes from, the breed, how the animal was raised and then killed and hung. The meat is carefully butchered and packed by hand by Riverford’s skilled team of butchers. To find out more about organic veg and meat delivered to your door visit www.riverford.co.uk/norton.

Riverford’s Bacon, Leek & Potato Gratin, serves 6 2 leeks, sliced 1 knob of butter 100g bacon, cooked and chopped 300ml double cream 100ml milk 2 garlic cloves, crushed 800g potatoes, peeled and cut into 2-3mm thick slices 1-2 tbsp freshly grated parmesan sea salt and black pepper Sweat the leeks in butter for 10 minutes, then add the bacon and garlic. Add the cream and milk and bring to the boil. Season and mix in the potatoes. Transfer to a gratin dish. Cover with foil and bake at 180°C

for about 50 minutes, until potatoes are tender. Remove the foil, sprinkle with parmesan and bake for another 10 minutes, until golden brown.

Essential Travel

Happy Birthday to Woods – they’re celebrating 40 years in the travel industry “We’ve also found that our door-to-door service by taxi to the coach pick up point has proved to be popular for many people across Sussex and Hampshire, especially for the older members of our community.”

It all began in 1971 with two London boys and two ZephyrZodiacs, providing quality taxi services from a small office in Aldwick. Now the company, Woods Travel Limited, runs the premier private coach hire service on the Sussex coast, has a full international tour programme, an ABTA bonded independent travel agency, runs the Sussex Cruise Club and employs over 45 people. Roger Elsmere and Bill Wood started the company with the aim of being the best – and they’ve always kept that goal in sight. After Bill’s death, Roger took sole charge of the company and by 1992 had opened a second side to the business, Woods Holidays Limited, an ABTA travel agency that was soon bonded with ATOL and IATA. The Sussex Cruise Club was added to the Woods group in January 2008 to highlight the travel agency’s cruising expertise and has gone from strength to strength.

The tour programme began in 1982 offering just five UK destinations. 2010 has seen over 125 departures, carrying over 6,500 passengers to various destinations, ranging from The Isles of Scilly to Eastbourne to the Austrian Lakes. The day excursion programme covers everything from train rides to boat trips, gardens to London shows (limited pick up area). And now, with their Ruby Anniversary fast approaching, Roger believes his company can cater for the modern-day traveller. “Woods will be the popular choice this year because people are becoming more demanding about what they want from their holidays,” he told us. “Everyone’s looking for a quality package which still represents excellent value for money. This year we have the usual mix of UK destinations, but we’re also travelling to the Italian Dolomites and cruising to the North Cape of Norway.”

Essential Pets

Is Love Enough? asks Holly Ross, leader of the pack at Shoreline Pet Supplies

Give a snail a home Worthing & District Animal Rescue Service (WADARS) get a lot of unusual animals and pets handed into them over the year, but the latest batch of abandoned snails has taken the charity by surprise. Twelve Giant African snails were found in a box at the side of the road in Worthing and passed to WADARS for re-homing. If you can give the

Giant African snails a home, call WADARS on 01903 217788 or visit the web site at www.wadars.co.uk.

If you care, so will your cat says the team at Cat’s Whiskers Veterinary Clinic

Most pet owners will tell you they love their animals – but do we express our love in a way they can understand? If we shower our furry friends in cuddles and kisses, do they realise why we are behaving this way? Take a dog for example. Many of us treat them like humans and give affection above all else, but this does not create a balance in their lives. Dogs need exercise, direction and leadership. We can show our dedication and care by being a balanced leader and use our affection as a reward for calm, relaxed behaviour. The best way we can show our animals we love them is by fulfilling their needs. Food, water and shelter, of course, are the very basics – but a good diet, a safe comfortable environment to rest, freedom to exercise

and a worry-free way of life are things that many animals can only hope for. Spending time with our pets and learning about them will help us to understand them and give them the best life we can. Many people love the idea of owning a certain pet, but do not necessarily understand what it means to have the commitment of caring for an animal in the right way. Be a true animal lover and choose the right pet for the right reason – making sure it suits your lifestyle and budget. Treat your pets with the dignity and respect they deserve, and they will leave pawprints on your heart forever. Need help or advice about caring for your pet? Talk to Holly or Rob at Shoreline Pet Supplies – they’re a mine of information. Call 01903 243100 or just pop in.

Cats may seem independent creatures but the more you get to know them, the more you come to realise they really do rely on you for mental stimulation and affection. Kittens and young cats are very playful so give them an assortment of toys to keep them occupied and exercised. These need not be expensive – every kitten loves a cardboard box to play in – and it’s a great way to get to know and trust each other. Scratching posts allow natural scratching behaviour without damaging furniture. Equally important to your cat’s happiness are regular suitable meals, with a constant supply of fresh water, and their own clean, comfortable bed. Provide your cat with outdoor access or be prepared to empty and clean a litter tray on a daily basis. Regular grooming is important – a daily task with long-haired cats. All other essentials will be dealt with by

your veterinary practice, and Cat’s Whiskers will be happy to advise on neutering – around 4 to 6 months old – vaccinations against major feline diseases and regular worm and flea treatment. Pet insurance and pet health plans can be set up to avoid sudden bills when you want them least. Cat’s Whiskers Veterinary Clinic is at 125 South Farm Road. Call 01903 830 577, email info@cwvet.co.uk or visit www.cwvet.co.uk for information and advice.

Essential News 15

Hello, hello, hello…

Littlehampton Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) are planning to get out and about in the local community, by climbing aboard the Stagecoach bus network. This gives police officers a great chance to say hello to passengers and discuss any issues they may have. The initiative is part of an ongoing policy operated by the PCSO team to interact and meet as many people as possible in the community. Twelve local PCSOs who patrol the Littlehampton area have been given free travel on the buses.

“The officers will be welcomed by our drivers,” says Adam Keen, Operations Manager for Stagecoach. “We have very few safety and security issues on our network, but the frequent presence of the PCSOs will help create a good rapport with our drivers and controllers. I believe this initiative will provide a perfect platform for the community to interact on an informal basis.” And West Downs Community Engagement Sergeant, Peter Allan comments: “We hope that the PCSOs will be able to meet more people in the relatively relaxed environment of the bus. It’s important we can engage in a two-way information flow with the community face to face, as well as through newsletters and websites.”

We provide... subsidised veterinary treatment to pets of local people receiving certain means-tested benefits or bona-fide homeless, including many pensioners. Although receiving fees, we rely heavily on donations and legacies to cover our costs. Further subsidies are available towards micro-chipping, neutering and vaccinating puppies and kittens, and towards major treatments or referrals beyond owners’ means. We carry out some 4,000 consultations and 500 operations a year, using extensive equipment and facilities and helping prevent animal suffering and ill-health

Secret Diaries exhibition at local libraries West Sussex Libraries are celebrating Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) History Month with some free events. And the Library Service has been working with West Sussex County Council’s LGBT Staff Group to host a series of talks by authors and performers. On Wednesday February 9 author Helena Whitbread visits Shoreham Library, to discuss her book, The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister, a selection of the diaries of a 19th century landowner – a lesbian in a time where such matters were neither discussed nor recognised.

There’s a fascinating accompanying exhibition at Shoreham Library from Tuesday February 1 to Friday February 11, and at Worthing Library from Tuesday February 15 to Monday February 28. The Library service holds a wide range of events throughout the year, including visiting poets, artists, authors and live music. Events are free, but places are limited. Tickets available through Worthing Library on 01903 704809, or Shoreham Library on 01273 454438. Visit www. westsussex.gov.uk/libraries for more information about these and other LGBT events.

Check out the exciting exhibition by local sculptor Alan Tobias Williams in the garden at Worthing Museum and Art Gallery. We’ve featured Alan’s work on our cover in the past – and it’s always fascinating to see his metal and stone sculptures with surprising recycled elements. The exhibition, entitled Thunder and Tempest, runs until April 23. Admission is free.

Got a spare room or two? Can you offer a stable loving home to a child in need? Plenty of people think about fostering, but don’t always take the plunge. So, to answer your questions, allay fears, and encourage more families to consider fostering seriously, West Sussex County Council is running new monthly drop-in sessions. The informal sessions are being held at a range of local libraries and are a first port of call for people who are

considering the idea and want more information. The next session is on Wednesday February 23 at Lancing library.

Essential Care

Romantic memories at The Shelley

Almost everyone remembers that magic moment when they first met the love of their life – and residents at The Shelley are no exception. We asked them for some romantic reminiscences, and here’s what they told us. One gentleman grew up in London’s East End and ran his own tailoring business.

He had a twin brother who began dating a lovely girl, only to discover that she was also a twin. His brother, a born matchmaker told him: “I’ve just found your future wife for you.” He introduced the pair, with instant success. The brothers double dated the sisters, proposed to them and enjoyed a double wedding.

“We were happily married for 68 years!” he tells us. Another gentleman met the love of his life while they were still at school. They were childhood sweethearts until his family decided to emigrate to Australia, and the pair lost touch. “I grew up and got married in Australia, and didn’t return to England until my wife died, 25 years later,” he says. “Imagine the amazing coincidence when I met our new neighbours – and found my childhood sweetheart living next door! It was like a dream come true to find each other again – and, of course we were married.” During World War II girls often wrote to guys in the Forces, building relationships through their words on paper. One Shelley resident tells how she became firm pen-friends

with a soldier, even though they had never met. “We felt as though we knew one another really well, though,” she says. “And when we met after the war, we clicked straight away and got married.” Brilliant human stories like this are what makes the world go round. And it’s great to look back on those far-off days, when love was everywhere and crept up on us when we were least expecting it. Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone at The Shelley!

Having trouble dropping off? Don’t bother counting sheep – try these top tips instead • Don’t drink coffee or cola after 2pm. The effects of the caffeine they contain can last for hours. Try redbush or herb tea as a calmer alternative.

Avoid drinking alcohol at bedtime. Although it may relax you at first, it’s actually a stimulant, so you’ll wake up again later. And it’s a diuretic, so it’ll make you need the loo. • Make sure your bedroom is cool and dark. Your brain tries to reduce your body temperature at night to slow down your metabolism – so aim for a bedroom temperature of about 16 degrees C.

• Soak in a warm bath. Your temperature will increase slightly and then fall – helping you to drop off. If you’re feeling achy, the warmth will also help relax stiff muscles. • Only go to bed when you feel really sleepy. If you can’t drop off within about 20 minutes, don’t lie there worrying about it. Get up and do something you find relaxing, like listening to calming music or reading.

Essential Health

Ditched the diet already? any personality, any pocket, and any lifestyle – but why don’t they work? Unless the underlying drivers of obesity and overweight are addressed alongside nutritional education, these patterns will never be broken. We will become a nation of fatties, with all the physical and mental health difficulties that go with that.

How many people eat and drink their way merrily through the Christmas and New Year period, telling themselves they will lose weight when the New Year comes? (It is common to have an intake of double our normal calories during that time!) Come January, a lot of people are able to stick to some sort of weight loss plan for a short time, but find that even a few weeks later it has all gone pear-shaped, and the seemingly unbeatable pattern of compulsive eating kicks in again. According to UK Obesity Statistics 46% of men and 32% of women are now obese, and these figures are on the rise. There is a diet to suit

What is a healthy weight for you? People vary in body shape and frame, so one of the most accurate ways to find out if you’re a healthy weight for your height is to calculate your BMI (Body Mass Index) Remember, weight is related to build, so take this into consideration if you are stocky or have a large muscle mass. But don’t kid yourself you have a large build if you have small hands and feet or narrow shoulders. How to work out your BMI 1. Write down your height in metres and multiply the figure by itself (good idea to use a calculator) 2. Measure your weight in kilograms 3. Divide the answer to step one by the answer to step 2 and that’s your BMI An ideal BMI is between 18.5 and 25. If your BMI is between 25 and 30 you need to lose some weight. If it’s between 30 and 40, you’re classified as obese – so weight loss is highly recommended.

Chris Copsey remembered Rik Scott pays tribute to his friend and Splash FM colleague, who passed away on January 11 Magazine columns like this have to be written a few weeks in advance, and as I write it’s the Monday after Chris passed away. Grey clouds cover the sky like a blanket, and by some strange coincidence it’s been like this since we heard the sad news late on Tuesday January 11. I’ve just spent a good 30 minutes reading through some of the many tributes left to Coppo at our website. Listeners, recent colleagues and names from the past are all united in wishing to express their regret at his passing. They’ve been sharing stories, bringing together different aspects of Chris’s life so we can all appreciate the man we’ve lost. In the radio industry we live a pretty nomadic lifestyle – with some of us moving from station to station every couple of years or so. Stoke, Newcastle, Manchester, Spain,

New Zealand… Chris’s former colleagues are dotted all over the place. Chris though, was the exception. Sussex was his manor. Chris was part of the team at our first commercial radio station, Southern Sound. The times we took the mickey out of him for the Mexican moustache he sported at the time!Years spent on breakfast, double heading with Nicky Keig Shevlin, then a move to mid-mornings. Every show prepped to the max! He knew all about the artists he was playing and what they were up to. The Retro show was a new vehicle for him in 2002, playing classic songs that hadn’t seen the light of day in years, plus a chance for him to chat with the people who made the songs, too. But life moves on, and Chris left Southern in 2008. The following year after a tough few months Chris returned to the airwaves here at Splash,

and it seemed all was well in the world. Coppo was back. Now it’s all been taken away in the most cruel of circumstances. But radio being radio, there’s always someone these days with a tape or mp3 of DJ’s at work so we can be sure that Chris’s work will live on. A dedicated family man, his show on a Monday would be full of tales of how he’d spent his weekend ferrying Charlie and Jess round to different sporting events. He was a tireless school governor and charity worker – and the tributes from local and national charities show there’s a big hole to be filled.

Essential Zodiac A fun, friendly look at what’s in the stars for you in February

AQUARIUS (Jan 21 – Feb 19)

Don’t you just love it when everything seems to be going your way? You’re enjoying some personal pampering, people are listening to what you say, and you’re bursting with energy and vitality. But don’t forget to listen to that little warning bell telling you when you’ve had too much of a god thing. All this drive and energy could end up pushing you beyond your limits, both mentally and physically – so take care.

PISCES

(Feb 20 – March 20) You’ve always been a generous, warm-hearted person, and this month you’ll find all kinds of opportunities to give to charity. It won’t necessarily be a financial donation, however – why not volunteer and get involved hands-on? The people you meet could turn out to be very useful contacts. During the second half of the month your finances take an upswing, with windfalls and opportunities for increased prosperity.

ARIES

(March 21 – April 20) If you’re looking for a career change in the near future, make sure you do your homework first. There’s no rush to jump into things, so get all the facts first, and these will help you resolve any doubts. If you’re single, there’s a strong possibility of a romance developing at work. If you’re in a relationship, your significant other is in a highly supportive frame of mind – so make the most of it.

LEO

(July 24 – Aug 23) Now’s the time to wake up and smell the coffee! You’ve been making all sorts of plans over the past few months, and the time is now right for putting these into action. Your social life is buzzing and, if you’re combining business with pleasure you could meet someone who’ll give you excellent financial advice.

VIRGO

(Aug 24 – Sept 23) You’ve really got your nose to the grindstone now, and this means you’re ready to reap rewards in terms of achievement. Job satisfaction is very important to you, and you’re prepared to tackle the boring stuff to ensure things are going your way. At home there could be tensions bubbling away beneath the surface – so listen to what a certain member of your family has to say.

LIBRA

(Sept 24 – Oct 23) You’re feeling on top the world – happy, healthy and well focused. Good for you! And to add to this rosy picture, your love life is blossoming. If you’re single, there’s a real opportunity for romance, but you’ll just want to have some fun first, before letting anything get too serious. Financial matters are looking decidedly interesting.

TAURUS

SCORPIO

(April 21 – May 21)

(Oct 24 – Nov 22)

It’s a busy month on the social scene, with all kinds of opportunities for fun at parties, or good old business networking. Now is a good time to assert your independence and use your judgment to make your own decisions. Although it’s sometimes good to listen to advice, there’s a particular matter where you know just want you want – and with a little effort you’ll be able to reach out and grab it.

If you’ve been spending time remembering and re-living old memories – or even dreaming about the past – this is no bad thing. It’s an essential part of getting some perspective into our lives, but don’t be ruled by your past actions. There are plenty of tomorrows to tackle, and you may need to ditch old methods and find a new approach.

GEMINI

(May 22 – June 21) If you’re a student, or if you’ve recently taken up a new course for fun, this is a great month for studying. You’ll find you can really immerse yourself in your chosen subject and discover all kinds of fascinating insights into stuff you never knew about before. If your finances have been a tad worrying over the last couple of months you’ll be relieved to know a period of greater prosperity is on its way.

CANCER

(June 22 – July 23) Change is in the wind as the month progresses, with new responsibilities to shoulder and fundamental shifts in the rules of the game. The good news is you’re properly focused on your career right now, so you’ll be able to take everything in your stride. During the second half of the month you may be feeling a tad under the weather, so try to avoid worry or anxiety and take a nap when you need one.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23 – Dec 21)

Finances could be somewhat erratic this month, so keep a close eye no the purse strings, and don’t be tempted by what seems like a bargain. Members of your family could be on edge, too, and fraying tempers at home mean you’ll need to exercise some of your famous patience. There could be an interesting travel opportunity on the horizon.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 20)

Most of your short-term financial goals seem to have been achieved nicely, so you can afford to indulge in some intellectual wealth instead. Read some good books, take up a new course, call an intelligent friend and arrange to meet for an in-depth discussion. You’re feeling and looking good – and your natural sense of style and glamour could be turning a few heads.

Essential Dr Sarah 23

Dr Sarah has the last word… Most chaps reading this may struggle to pull into the petrol station on Feb 14 to grab a sad bunch of windswept blue chrysanths (don’t bother, it’ll only make it worse, much worse). Giving your actual heart to someone, rather than a soppy card or half-meant pseudo-romantic gesture, is the subject of my monthly muse and albeit tenuous link with Valentine’s Day, which since I was nine and fancied a spotty boy on the school bus, has been almost exclusively disappointing. The Transplant and Transfusion service rang me at home the other day, and in a scene reminiscent of the Monty Python Organ Donor sketch, I told them they couldn’t have my liver on account of my

Lonely hearts (livers, kidneys…) It’s not a romantic gesture which may immediately spring to mind, says Dr Sarah Honess currently using it. Since the lad on the other end was about 12 and probably in a call centre in Mumbai, there was an awkward pause as my ‘joke’ fell like the proverbial lead balloon, and I visualised him mouthing ‘nutter’, and pointing down the receiver. I, like many others regularly give blood, on the basis that if I expect to get it when I need it then I should be prepared to give it when I don’t. Similarly, when I’m dead I shall be happy to donate any bits that might serve someone else and that aren’t pickled in Harvey’s Bristol Cream. Exceptionally, I might even be persuaded to part with a nonessential or duplicate organ to someone I love very much indeed so that they might live long enough to buy me some blue chrysanths. Of course there are more people alive needing

replacement organs than suitable live or dead donors. In many places this leads to the illegal ‘harvesting’ and trafficking of body parts, usually from the healthy poor for the benefit of sick, wealthy recipients. I read an article last week, again proposing the legalisation of live organ sale, and I’ve had a bit of an ethical wrestle with it. There is a clear utilitarian argument for too much demand, not enough supply. Legalising organ trade would almost instantly remove the supply problem and meet demand. In addition to this, the illegal trade would dry up and strangle the black market. All good. And yet… I believe, as with many good principles, the Law of Unintended Consequences would come into play. The current organ donor system would cease to exist, and the goodwill that goes

with it, in favour of a money driven market. People would be tempted to sell a kidney to pay for a holiday, car, conservatory or credit card debts. I’m not religious but I don’t believe in frivolous disrespect of the integrity of the human body. I feel deeply uncomfortable that, however you dress it up, the supply of organs would still be mostly from people in some sort of financial difficulty. The supply problem has to be tackled through education and by encouraging more people to give their organs for use by others when they have no further need themselves. Give someone your heart this Valentine’s Day. Get a Donor Card. Dr Sarah trained in Medicine at King’s College, London, and now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.
