It’s the longest bench in Britain and you’ll find it on the sea front in Littlehampton, near South Terrace. This awardwinning design is by London-based Studio Weave – with enthusiastic assistance from pupils at Connaught Junior School, Littlehampton. It’s made using hundreds of reclaimed wood slats and engraved with over 200 personal messages from supporters of the scheme. We love to keep our covers quirky!

Animal Clinic
We provide... subsidised veterinary treatment to pets of local people receiving certain means-tested benefits or bona-fide homeless, including many pensioners. Although receiving fees, we rely heavily on donations and legacies to cover our costs. Further subsidies are available towards micro-chipping, neutering and vaccinating puppies and kittens, and towards major treatments or referrals beyond owners’ means. We carry out some 4,000 consultations and 500 operations a year, using extensive equipment and facilities and helping prevent animal suffering and ill-health

From the Editor I found myself following the weirdest driver on my way back into Worthing the other night. It was only about 9.30pm, not your usual pub-chucking-out time, so I doubted that an over-enthusiastic consumption of alcohol was really at the root of the problem. Here’s how it went. The driver crawled at a steady 20 miles per hour all the way past the Aquarena as far as the lights at the entrance to Steyne Gardens. Then as they changed to green, he (or she – it was hard to tell in the dusk) whizzed around the corner as though shot from a cannon, abruptly resuming the slow crawl along the sea front, until just after the multi-storey car park – whereupon the car turned right, up a one way street. Talk about “to boldly go”! I was so astonished I felt quite lightheaded. And this must have persisted for a while, as it’s the first time I’ve included a split infinitive in my column. But I ask you – who, in their right mind, actually drives like this, at any time of the day or night? It wasn’t just inept, it was perverse, verging on the seriously bonkers. And then I thought what a fascinating analogy for life this is. We dawdle along aimlessly, oblivious of the consequences for those around us. Then, when a change of direction seems inevitable (marriage? divorce? mortgage? visit to the in-laws?) we rush blindly into it, hoping to get it all over quickly so we can settle down to a quiet life. I say, beware. Eventually the one way street will loom – and then what will you do? Just make sure your indicators are working.

Families are invited for a fun day out to celebrate the official opening of a brilliant new project – We Cycle Too! It’s been created to enable children with disabilities to experience the joy of cycling – which can have enormous physical and emotional benefits. The project will enable children and young people with a disability to take part in an activity which they can enjoy with friends and family. The children will be able to rent a specially adapted bike or be seated on a bike with their parent or carer. For many, it may be their first experience of cycling. There’s a purpose built 400m track with a choice of long or short routes – and an extra 10 blue badge car parking spaces with full accessibility. Come along and enjoy plenty of entertainment, as well as the official ribbon

There’s an additional wheelchair swing, musical sensory equipment, sensory springers, a themed bench and assisted saddles for the pony rides. Inspired by Sussex The Worthing Wordies return to Indigo with a local flavour
Sussex is the theme for the next Wordies of Worthing performance and dinner at Indigo Restaurant in The Steyne on Sunday June 26. Those who have already experienced one of these events will know that the evening consists of a variety of readings and performances followed by a delicious two course meal and wine. While choosing the programme, the players were amazed to discover just how many writers had been inspired by our county, from
William Blake and Oscar Wilde (pictured) to Hilaire Belloc and Harold Pinter and many a modern writer too. Items to be included were written in Sussex, inspired by Sussex or penned by residents. There’s humour, drama, beauty and a bit of silliness besides. “Whether you are a regular at these events, a visitor or just interested in the literature of Sussex, there should be plenty to entertain you,” says Simon Margaroli of Indigo Restaurant at the Ardington Hotel. The performance begins promptly at 6pm with a short interval for drinks at the bar. The menu will reflect the food of the county and you will need to make your selection when you book. At £18.95 for the whole evening – for quality entertainment and food – it’s a bargain. To book call 01903 230451, or visit www.indigorestaurant. info . Pre-booking essential.
Over the garden wall at Ambrose Place For most of the year, the beautiful gardens behind those impressive houses in Worthing’s Ambrose Place are a well-kept secret. But for just one day the gardens of this Grade II Listed Regency terrace in the centre of town are open to the public as part of the National Gardens Scheme – and this year the date for your diary is Sunday June 26. This special event is now in its 28th consecutive year and residents hope to raise money for a raft of worthy causes, including Macmillan Nurses and Marie Curie Cancer Care. Come along from 11am to 1pm and from 2pm to 5pm – the entrance is in Richmond Road opposite the library. You’ll pay just £5 to see all the gardens and for an additional £2 (by pre-paid ticket) you can enjoy afternoon tea with home made cakes in the Tabernacle Church’s Way-in-Café opposite the Town Hall. These gorgeous gardens are incredibly varied in layout, treatment and planting – and are all maintained by their amateur garden owners, who now have a brand new

Flying in for a wild summer June is National Microchipping Month It’s not only in winter that our garden birds need a bit of help with their food, says Holly at Shoreline Pet Supplies
Here’s a great offer from Cat’s Whiskers Each microchip has a unique code which is linked to the national 24 hour database which contains your contact details. During the summer, birds need high protein foods especially while they are moulting and feeding their young. Great choices would be black sunflower seeds, soaked raisins, good quality seed mixes, suet pellets and blocks, and of course, mealworms. Use dried ones or, if you don’t mind them live, they provide a fantastic, wriggly meal! Try to avoid feeding whole peanuts and chunks of bread – these can be harmful to nestlings, as they pose a choking threat. Clean your feeders at least once a week with a specialist disinfectant to avoid the spread of disease. Never allow uneaten foods to collect on your bird table or feeding stations, as they can also attract unwanted visitors. Don’t feed anything with a high salt content, like salted peanuts, crisps or bacon scraps. These foods can lead to dehydration. Try to feed your birds at the same time every day,
as they will establish a routine and plan their visits to your garden. It’s a good idea to provide water all year round for birds to drink and bathe in. Although some birds get enough moisture from the food itself, drinking water is especially needed when feeding a dry diet such as seeds. If you’re new to feeding wild birds or having trouble attracting them to your garden, try black sunflowers or sunflower hearts. This will attract a wide variety of birds. Like to find out more about feeding specific varieties of birds, and what type of feeders should be used with which seed? Pop into Shoreline Pet Supplies – we’re always on hand to help. We stock a massive range of Wild Bird food and speciality feeders. We also hold bulk foods for the real enthusiasts! You’ll find Goring Pet Supplies at the Mulberry Shopping Parade on Goring Road.

Family friendly at Goring Café Sizzling Safety Here’s how to avoid trouble at your barbecue The easiest way to ensure everyone’s safety is to apply the rules you automatically follow in your kitchen. Never leave the fire or food unattended. Make sure one sober person is in charge at any time. They will know which food is thoroughly cooked and which tools have been used to pick up uncooked food. You may know that raw pork and chicken can make you ill, but a delicious rare steak can be just as bad if handled with contaminated tongs. Isolate the heat source. Keep away from fences and sheds. Be aware of which way the wind is blowing and how your guests will move around the barbecue. Keep children and pets out of the way.
When you’re taking your hungry kids out to lunch, it’s good to know a local eatery that’s open seven days a week, serving satisfying meals at bargain prices. At Goring Café, right at the heart of the Mulberry in Goring Road, there’s a fantastic range of sandwiches, omelettes, grills, burgers, jacket potatoes and salads – with a special kids’ menu serving dishes at £2.70 for the under-tens. This excellent, family-friendly café already has a strong reputation with its regular customers, and if you and your family haven’t yet discovered the delights of its hearty menu, it’s about time you did. The open plan kitchen means you can watch the chefs at work, as they prepare your meal just the way you like it. If you’re a fan of all-day breakfasts – and who isn’t? – try the Mega Set Breakfast. It’s got absolutely everything for just
£6, and you won’t need to eat again for the rest of the day.
Never be tempted to use accelerants to get your fire going. Firelighters will do the trick , but you need to be patient. Keep a plant spray bottle handy to damp down any food that catches alight. Think of others. Anti-social drinking and excessive noise can get you into trouble, so consider other people. Remember too, lighter fuel and burnt meat smells are not what you want, especially on your neighbour’s washing.
Sunday roasts are a speciality, too. They’re all served with roast potatoes and three vegetables – and at just £5.50 they’re a delicious bargain. The café has a friendly, cheerful atmosphere, with prompt, efficient service delivered with a smile. There’s a full takeaway service, too. Goring Café at 282 Goring Road is open seven days a week, from 7.30am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and from 8am to 4pm on Sunday. There’s easy parking at the rear or in the service road outside. Pop in soon, or call 01903 506868 to place your takeaway order.

It’s often the little things in life that frustrate the most. A battery runs out but it’s not worth paying a parking fee just to buy some more. Your plumber needs a different joint but the wholesaler is across town. That’s when the local shops come in to their own, and Ferring boasts one of the best. Andrews Hardware in Ocean Parade stocks an amazing array of goods, even by the standard of most hardware stores. Apart from plumbing supplies, they have a wide range of nails, screws and fixings, electrical items, garden equipment, composts and a selection of plants. Then there’s the kitchen section, with tools for cleaning, utensils, crockery, cooking equipment and storage boxes.
Those who enjoy the outdoor life will find camping equipment and a budget range of fishing tackle. Add to that dry cleaning, Calor gas, watch batteries and key cutting and most of your hardware needs are covered, but if not they’ll try to get it for you. Delivery is available and free in the Ferring area. Jane and Malcolm Andrews opened the store just a few weeks ago, but have already made their mark on the village. Banish the garden invaders Don’t be over-run by pests in the garden. Check out our top tips for banishing those unwanted visitors. • Going ant crazy? This may sound weird, but next time you see a column of ants in the house or garden, try putting some two pence pieces in their path. We’re told they’ll leave quickly. (Editor’s note: That’s the rumour, anyway! Do let us know if you find it works.) • Catty challenge? Cats hate the smell of oranges, so sprinkle some finely chopped orange peel around the garden. Neighbouring cats should steer clear. • Mountains and molehills? Moles can create havoc in a garden. If you can find the entrance to their tunnel, you can deter them by pouring a can of sardines down it. We’re told they also dislike
Keen on green? Southwick Nursery has it all
the smell of orange peel and mothballs. • Slugging it back? Next time you’re having a quiet can of beer in the garden, leave a few drops in the can, widen the hole and leave on its side. Slugs are complete gluttons for beer, so will fall in and drown. • Shameless earwigging? If earwigs are really making a meal of your young plants, roll up some damp newspaper and leave it near where they’ve been at work. Next morning, the paper will be full of them, ready for you to dispose of the evidence. • Goodbye, greenfly! A clove of garlic buried in a plant pot will keep greenfly away from your beloved house plants.
Looking for the best ways to keep your garden green and in good shape? At Southwick Nursery you’ll find everything you need – from traditional hanging baskets, terracotta pots and tubs, to bedding plants, vegetables and compost. This well established, family run garden centre prides itself on a top quality service to the local
community – and because they’ve been in business for over 14 years, they really know what they’re talking about. Southwick Nursery offers a wide range of excellent home grown horticultural products, and supplies landscapers, local gardening businesses and general garden enthusiasts right across our area. And if you need advice on soil conditions, planting or any other gardening queries, they’re more than happy to help. There’s a good delivery service, too. Southwick Nursery is open Monday to Saturday from 9am – 5pm, and on Sundays from 10am – 4pm. Call for home grown garden produce and garden advice on 01273 592 865.

Why should you extend the lease of your flat? The lease of a flat is a diminishing asset, says Jonathan Everett at Coole & Haddock
As the lease on your flat gets shorter, the value of the flat decreases. If the existing lease has an unexpired term of less than 80 years, you may encounter difficulties selling your flat. If the unexpired term is less than 70 years, the flat may be unmortgageable with many lenders. The Leasehold Reform, Housing and Urban Development Act 1993 gives
leaseholders the right, if they qualify, to claim a new lease of their flat for an extended term, which is 90 years longer than the unexpired term of their existing lease. Also, ground rent is reduced to a peppercorn – meaning no ground rent will be payable from completion of the new lease. If it cannot be agreed with the landlord, the price to be paid for the new lease will be determined by the leasehold valuation tribunal. The law in this area is complex. There are strict time limits involved when bringing claims and failure to meet these time limits can have serious consequences for the claim. And that’s where we can help. As a partner based in Worthing law firm Coole & Haddock, I have 15 years leasehold enfranchisement experience, with a thorough understanding of the processes involved in claiming a lease extension under the 1993 Act. This experience and understanding
means I can provide specialist advice at a competitive fixed fee. Group discounts can also be offered to leaseholders, and I’ll be happy to attend an initial group meeting free of charge to explain the processes involved.
For further details about lease extension claims under the 1993 Act, the fixed fee service or group discounts, please contact Jonathan Everett on 01903 534505 or email jonathan.everett@ coolelaw.co.uk

Aloe Vera Gel – the perfect health drink
The properties of Aloe Vera have been well documented over hundreds of years. The gel found inside the leaf of this extraordinary-looking plant contains 75 essential ingredients – including vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other compounds necessary for the body’s wellbeing. Imagine slicing open an aloe leaf and consuming the gel straight from the plant. The closest you can get to doing this is by drinking Aloe Vera Gel. This patented, stabilised
product is almost identical to the fresh gel of the leaf, and it was the first to receive certification by the International Aloe Science Council. By drinking Aloe Vera Gel, you’ll be enjoying a wonderful health drink. Its important ingredients include 19 of the 20 amino acids needed by the human body, which are often deficient in food. These allow complex enzyme systems to work really well, meaning you could experience a fantastic feeling of wellbeing. Aloe Vera Gel contains a wide range of vitamins and minerals, too – so it’s great for building up the body’s defence system. And because it contains plant sterols, it works well in soothing muscles and maintaining healthy joints, mobility and flexibility. Try it alone or mixed with

Ouch! I’ve been stung! ‘Tis the season for bees, wasps and other flying attackers. To save yourself the pain of getting stung, try these preventative measures. Wear white. Stinging insects prefer dark colours. Don’t smell too tempting. Avoid perfume or aftershave that could make a bee confuse you with a flower. Use a bath oil. Certain oils contain a natural insect repellent, so it’s worth rubbing a little on to your skin before you go out. Try an over the counter insect repellent cream. Sunshine and smiles at The Shelley
There’s nothing so tranquil, or so uplifting, as a beautiful English garden in summer. And after those chilly weeks earlier in the year, (remember those?) residents at The Shelley, Worthing’s luxury care home, are looking forward to enjoying a healthy dose of fresh air and sunshine. The Shelley’s large, secluded garden is the perfect place to while away an hour or so – and
many of the residents’ rooms open directly on to a sunny patio, with their own private planting area, comfortable garden furniture and a parasol that’s just right for enjoying the morning newspaper and a fresh brewed coffee. Many other rooms have a garden view, so there’s always something interesting to see, whatever the time of year.
Owner, Marlene Sanders comments “Whether they’re tending the garden, planting out their own plants or simply feeding all the visiting birds and squirrels, our residents can find plenty to do, if they want to. But if their idea of having fun in the garden is simply sitting back and enjoying the beauty of our surroundings, they can do that, too. Our water feature is a lovely tranquil spot, and looks particularly good when the outdoor lights come on in the evenings. There’s something about the gentle sound of bubbling water that really soothes the mind and makes everyone feel better.” Activities organisers Fiona and Peter make sure there’s plenty planned for residents – barbecues, Pimm’s parties and visits in the minibus to local garden centres for inspiration.
This month the garden will be ablaze with June roses and a spectacular display of the resident’s own plant tubs – and come the autumn, apple pie should be firmly on the menu, with cooking apples straight from The Shelley’s own trees. Whether we’re planning, working or relaxing, it’s great to get out there in the garden and now summer’s well and truly here, it sounds as though everyone at The Shelley will be busy doing all three.

straight home to write about it in his diary. But Pepys would probably not recognise today’s Punch and Judy. The version he saw would have taken place inside a small tent rather like a fairground booth, and Punch was actually a marionette, dancing while the showman pulled the strings. So what of the pugnacious stickwielding glove puppet we all know as the real Mr Punch? If nothing else, he’s certainly a survivor, rising from the ashes
Remember that red and white striped booth erected on the beach, with a gaggle of excited children gathered in front of it? Remember how you waited for the curtain to rise, revealing that hunchbacked, hook-nosed figure everyone loves to hate? With his piercing squawk of “that’s the way to do it!” no-one could fail to recognise the anarchic Mr Punch – and his total disregard for any form of moral code or political correctness has delighted children for nearly three and a half centuries. Punch and Judy shows were once part of any British seaside scene, and although they appear less frequently on beaches these days, the rollicking old rascal and his long-suffering wife are still very
much in evidence at fetes, parties, carnivals and other functions where merrymaking is an important part of the proceedings. But how did it all begin? And what exactly is it that fuels our national fascination with such comic irreverence? The show can trace its roots way back to the 16th century Italian commedia dell’ arte, when the figure of Punch was known as Pulcinella or Punchinello. He made his first recorded appearance in England on May 9 1662, near St Paul’s Church in London’s Covent Garden, when a certain Mr Samuel Pepys happened to be passing. He was “mightily pleased” by the “very pretty” show and went Young puppeteer Joe Burns with his best pal, Mr Punch
two pieces of wood which slap together, making an extra loud noise when striking another character. The opportunities for conflict, fun and general mayhem were endless – with new characters like the policeman, the baby and Jack Ketch the hangman making their debut and falling victim to Punch’s antics. Another trademark is Mr Punch’s distinctive squawking voice – produced by a device known as a swazzle which the

Perhaps he knew that what had once pleased Great Grandmamma was no longer a novelty, and in order to stay alive he must re-invent himself. And that involved cutting the strings which bound him to the world of marionettes. Instead of his cumbersome booth which had previously needed half a dozen assistants to operate the puppets, Mr Punch became a glove puppet – with a one-man show so simple it could be pushed around the streets on a handcart. And the rest, as they say, is history. A glove puppet has one great advantage over a marionette – he can pick things up and hold them. And the first prop Mr Punch seized upon was his trademark slap stick, made from
puppeteer holds in his mouth. And, of course, it is the skill of the puppeteer by which Punch’s success stands or falls. Throughout the ages these ‘professors’, as the Victorians called them, have entertained us at street corners and on seaside beaches the length and breadth of Britain. No fewer than sixteen monarchs have sat on the throne of England since Mr Punch made his first appearance – and in the 21st century he still has the power to mesmerise and enthral us. His exultant progress into a new millennium certainly gives Mr Punch plenty to boast about. And, as he thumps Judy with his stick, swinging those silly little legs over the front of his stripy booth, you can bet your last sixpence that’s exactly what he’ll be doing – for a very long time to come.

Gold hot pants, anyone? Anna B just can’t decide what to wear for this year’s Splash FM Garden Party There’s so much excitement and anticipation at the return of the summer and the sunshine. And there are two summery things in particular that I look forward to, which are instantly written in my diary in big red pen. The first is my birthday (June 4 – thanks for asking!) Even though I’m not overly keen on watching the candles on the cake increase after someone kindly pointed out I’m closer to 40 than I am to 21 now, it’s still an occasion that must be celebrated. The other date that gets marked on the calendar the very moment it’s announced, is the Splash FM Garden Party! The great news is – it’s back again this year in Steyne Gardens on Friday July 22 and Saturday July 23. It seems so clichéd to say – but I know this year will be bigger and better than ever before. The more times we fill
Steyne Gardens with a massive state-of-the-art rock stage, with one hundred thousand watts of speakers and lighting power, with some of the top tribute acts in the country and thousands and thousands of excited party goers, the more times we can make it even better the following year. Practice makes perfect! As 2011 marks the tenth successive year Splash FM has hosted a concert in Steyne Gardens, I feel pretty confident that this will indeed be the best yet. So, what’s in store? On Friday night we’re celebrating the music of Kylie, with Ultimately Kylie and Irish Rock Gods U2, performed by Achtung Baby. So ladies, I think it’s about time to dust off those little gold hot pants! On Saturday night, as the 10 hours of live music continues, we bring you the music of Phil

Collins, complete with an eleven piece live band as tribute act And finally Phil Collins takes to the stage. The music of Robbie Williams will be brought to life by the UK’s number one Robbie Tribute, Millennium Robbi and finally, to round things off and take us on a tour of some of the biggest pop hits of the last four decades, it’s Melissa Totten, who’s toured the world as a tribute to Madonna. There’ll also so be some great local support to kick things off as we enjoy a lazy picnic on Saturday afternoon. You can snap up Early Bird tickets now, priced at just £8 for both nights. To buy them while they’re still on offer, or for more details on the whole event, go to www.splashfm.com and I’ll make sure I see you there. The only problem now is what to wear…
We apologise for an error in last month’s quiz. The answer to question 3 about the midmorning show should have been Sam Hughes, not Richard Reynolds – who, of course, has been presenting the Breakfast Show for some time.

22 Essential Zodiac A fun, friendly look at what’s in the stars for you in June
AQUARIUS (Jan 21 – Feb 19)
LEO
(July 24 – Aug 23)
If you’ve been concentrating a bit too hard on work for the past few months, now’s the time to enjoy a bit of cosy domesticity. Your family are really important to you, but if you do find your thoughts straying to business matters, that’s okay. Work out those important strategies in your head, by all means. Just wait a while before you zoom into the office and put them into practice.
A-list celebrity and world domination are not up for grabs this month – but you’re still doing very nicely, thank you. Success and promotion are well within your reach, and there’s plenty of support for your career goals from family and colleagues. Don’t be too ready to adapt and compromise, however. This is your time, and you can get things done your way.
PISCES
VIRGO
(Feb 20 – March 20)
(Aug 24 – Sept 23)
Your money-making activities may have been a lot of fun recently, but there is a limit to anyone’s interest in financial matters. The time must come when your brain starts to yearn for a little more intellectual and creative stimulation – and that time is now. Sign up for an interesting course, book yourself into a lecture or seminar. It’s all grist to the mill – and your busy brain will love you for it.
There could be an excellent opportunity to advance your career by getting involved with a charitable activity. It’s always good to give your time freely and enjoy volunteering, but these activities could also have some excellent practical consequences, which may not be immediately apparent. Health is good, but you need to stay focused on what’s important and not waste energy on trivial matters.
ARIES
LIBRA
(March 21 – April 20)
(Sept 24 – Oct 23)
Since the beginning of the year you’ve been enjoying a bit of a spending spree – and there’s certainly nothing wrong with treating yourself, if your finances are looking good. An overseas trip could be on the cards this month, and you’ll be raring to go. As the month progresses you’ll be longing to expand your mind, and catch up with all those long overdue letters and emails. Don’t delay!
Well, you got through the past couple of months – even if it felt as though others were reaching the dizzy heights of success, while you plodded on like a tortoise. But you still have your health and sanity intact – and things are all set to get better. The rest of the year may bring a few more trials and tribulations your way, but these are nothing compared with previous battles.
TAURUS
SCORPIO
(April 21 – May 21) Because you’re so good at being in charge you could find yourself acting as role model this month. Your career path looks strong, and you can expect plenty of family support as you press on to achieve the goals you set yourself in the New Year. If you’ve been feeling a bit under the weather recently, the good news is your health is on track to improve significantly.
GEMINI
(May 22 – June 21)
(Oct 24 – Nov 22) The key theme for your month – believe it or not – is love. There are flowers, wedding rings and serious relationships all set to jump out and surprise you. These could be for you, or perhaps for someone close to you. One thing is certain, though – you’ll be going out more (perhaps to a wedding or special party), and there could be an interesting meeting just about to happen.
SAGITTARIUS
Listen to the news and you’ll see how rapidly world events are moving. It’s exactly the same with your own life, but don’t panic – there’s no need to let things get out of hand. Spend time reviewing some difficult issues you’ve been wrestling with recently, perhaps connected with your family, and think about simple and immediate ways to resolve them. This may not be as impossible as you first thought.
(Nov 23 – Dec 21)
CANCER
CAPRICORN
You’ve probably been giving some thought recently to certain changes in your life that need to be made – and now’s the time to implement them. Your happiness and success is totally up to you, so if others don’t seem to want to go along with your plans, it’s perfectly okay to go it alone. And if you’ve been a tad under the weather recently, you’ll soon be feeling much better.
Life has probably been tough for the past few months, and you could be wondering what Fate will throw at you next. The answer is – it doesn’t matter, because you are going to face everything this month with joy and humour. Feeling bad? Make a joke of it! It’s an old cliché, but sometimes laughter really is the best medicine.
(June 22 – July 23)
Are you feeling exhausted? Last month was all about the pursuit of pleasure, but there has to be an end to all this partying – and now it’s time to knuckle down to some hard work. It’s a good month to handle all those irritating little details of life, so make sure you get all that filing and book-keeping up to date.
(Dec 22 – Jan 20)
Essential Dr Sarah 23
Dr Sarah has the last word…
I happened to catch a snippet of the TV programme Embarrassing Bodies the other day. It seems the nation has an insatiable appetite for this kind of ‘Medic-entertainment’, starring hapless members of the public (no pun intended), and their body parts. Bearing in mind these are people who have hitherto been too crippled by self-consciousness to consult a GP discreetly
Embarrassing bodies? Dr Sarah’s never been one to blush and confidentially, they have shown remarkable fortitude in overcoming their discomfiture and exposing their tender parts to a TV crew. And perfect strangers. And a viewing public of millions – all watching through their fingers, screaming “Ewwww….!” at the telly. Of course, all the doctors they feature are hipper and sexier than the average real-life medic. But that makes things worse, doesn’t it? Apparently not. In the episode I saw, some poor bloke was having his crown jewels plundered – in close up, if you don’t mind – by a tall, slim, blond, tanned and trendy-looking male doc. Obviously, in my line of work, it helps not to blush easily or giggle in the face of embarrassment or shock, but
I must admit, I did wince for this man. Is the power of TV so great that he was prepared to drop his Simpsons boxers in front of the entire nation, where previously he had been too embarrassed to seek help from a doctor who didn’t look like an extra from Baywatch? Bizarre. Is this normal? Have I missed a trick? Is this anything more than voyeuristic, freak-show TV? Upon mature reflection, I consider it might actually have a purpose. If these brave/stupid people can help de-stigmatise so-called ‘embarrassing’ problems – good for them! It’s only because we have such a contorted relationship with our intimate body parts and their function or malfunction that there is a problem at all.
Bottoms and boobs are ubiquitous in advertising. Inappropriately exposed celebrities get shoved down our throats every day of the week. Surely that’s much more embarrassing? So I say to you, bring out your boils and carbuncles, your hairy warts and webbed toes, your fungal nail infections and pimply bottoms. Be proud and let us see them. When I say ‘us’, of course, I mean ‘them’, your local and friendly GPs. They’ll be delighted. But please don’t bring them to me – unless they’ve fallen off a roof or smashed into a wall first.. Dr Sarah trained in Medicine at King’s College, London, and now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.
