Pantos are back in Worthing “You shall go to the ball”
It’s Amanda Barrie as the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella at the Connaught Coronation Street and Bad Girls star Amanda Barrie knows that as the Fairy Godmother, she’ll be doing a lot of talking in rhyme. So, as a decidedly good girl this Christmas, she promises she’ll be working hard to ensure all the lines are in her head before rehearsals begin.
‘
Kids these days don’t like characters that are twee and unfunny
’
“I do like playing goodies, but they need to be amusing. Kids these days don’t like characters that are twee and unfunny,” says Amanda. This year’s Cinderella at the Connaught Theatre will be Amanda’s first panto in Worthing.
“After 15 years in Corrie I’m glad to come back to panto, because it really has returned to its old values,” she says. “It’s the only branch of theatre where family enjoyment is key. If you get it right, all ages will enjoy it equally. Now, more than ever, we all need an extra helping of truth and sincerity. I learned this ages ago in panto, and it works today better than ever.”
It’s Darren Day as Captain Hook in Peter Pan at the Pavilion
Get on Get ked d ready to o o H erlan boo the Nev villain, as the dastardly Captain Hook prepares to do battle with Peter Pan, and flee that persistent crocodile! “It’s loads more fun to play baddies, because there’s so much more you can do,” says Darren Day, who plays the wicked Captain. “I’ve just worked for six months in Hollyoaks, playing a gangster, so I’ve been getting in the mood!” Darren loves the concept of panto – and admits it’s taken on a whole new meaning since he had his own children. “My four-year-old daughter is a bit disappointed I won’t be playing the hero, but my boys are really excited that I’m handling the villainous side of things.”
Darren reckons panto is the best way to create a future in theatre-going for children. “It’s so important to take it seriously and really nail your character,” he explains. “I’m really looking forward to coming to Worthing, and can’t wait to start rehearsals!”

Personally speaking Ghost hunter Arron Weedall, age 33, from Littlehampton, runs the West Sussex Paranormal Investigations group (WSPI). He tells us about his creepy calling The world of the paranormal has always interested me. Even as a small boy, tales about monsters, vampires and ghosts, but mostly ghosts, were spine-tingling. I’d read about haunted locations and walk around graveyards at night hoping to catch a glimpse of a spirit. In 2004 I started to investigate the paranormal seriously. I found a group to join (C.O.T.C. Paranormal Investigations) and prepared for my first official ghost hunt at Michelham Priory. A week before I went to Michelham a very good friend of mine sadly died, which left me wondering whether to give up ghost hunting before it had even started. I realised though that if I could prove to myself that ghosts were real and that there was an afterlife, I would eventually see my buddy again. So my quest for the paranormal suddenly had a new meaning. The most haunted place around Worthing has to be Clapham Wood. It’s so nice during the day but at night it’s dark and creepy and makes you feel that you’re being watched. There were many bodies buried here in plague pits during the Black Death. Maybe their restless souls make it haunted, or maybe the story of the pits simply fires our imaginations into thinking it’s haunted. I still don’t know which it is. If you want to ghost hunt, you’ll need lots of patience (and a good night vision video camera). You’ll also need a level head. The ability to look for a rational explanation is a must – not all ghost hunters believe in ghosts. If you’d like to take part in a ghost hunt, see www.deadhaunted.com

Treats for your top dog
The next time you go on holiday, how about a little R&R for your dog too? We talk to Barking Mad, a unique service for all those pampered pooches So what’s it all about? Barking Mad was set up to ensure that when you go on holiday, you never have to leave your best friend in a boarding kennels again. After a visit from your local Barking Mad representative, Christine Low, to find out all about your dog and their likes and dislikes, your dog will be collected from your home and taken to a specially selected host family for their very own ‘five–star’ break! All their creature comforts, such as bed, toys and treats, will go with them to ensure that they feel right at home in their new surroundings, and the host family will take lots of lovely holiday snaps of your dog so that you can see how they got along. t! i d Debbie Hodder, who lives near trie I’ve Billingshurst, used Barking Mad this summer. Debbie and her family were all
set to travel to Oxford for her brother’s wedding, when at the last minute Debbie’s mother in law was unable to look after their eight month old Springer Spaniel Archie. “It was a bit of a mad panic” says Debbie, “but Barking Mad had been recommended to us, so we decided to give it a try”. Christine Low, who runs Barking Mad in the Worthing area, came round to see them immediately. “Christine was brilliant. She wanted to know all about Archie and his likes and dislikes. It was almost as if she was going to look after a child,” says Debbie.
“My seven year old daughter was really upset about leaving him but Christine sent texts all weekend to let us know how he was getting on. “Christine also came back with loads of photos of Archie, which showed him playing with her son, in her garden or asleep” says Debbie. “He looked like he’d had a great time, and apparently he loved the sea. We don’t live near the coast so it was a real treat for him!” Barking Mad www.barkingmad.uk.com 01243 863050

Your autumn harvest Andrew Tomes from Bell Gardens Ltd in Worthing tells us what we should be doing in our seaside gardens this October
Apple picking, potatoes, leaves and bonfires are my abiding memories of Octobers past. Not much has changed except that the weekend bonfire has given way to composting. It’s a frenetic month for gardeners, the culmination of all the work from the planning, planting and tending. Now the last tomatoes can be taken off and either left to ripen (in a paper bag with a ripening banana is a good method) or made into green tomato chutney. Potatoes and carrots can be dug, preferably in dry weather, and stored. One tip is to cut the withering green of the potato plant two weeks before digging to combat blight spores infecting the crop. The vegetable garden should be ready for a good clear out, with the exception of any brussels, and leave the parsnips for a frost. The now tired and withered stalks can all be gathered and composted. Onions and garlic can be sown to give an early crop. The cleared ground can be levelled and dressed with a good dose of compost or manure and roughly dug in. The frosts will help make it Top Tip more manageable for the Cut out the withering green spring. Remember manure of the potato plant two weeks should be well rotted, before digging to combat blight though fresher compost sores infecting the crop. may be used if put at the

bottom of a deep future bean trench. It is always a great feeling to be able to empty those compost bins for a fresh start. The general garden tidy up includes pruning fruit bushes like currents, taking cuttings of half hardy annuals like pelargoniums and fushias. If you’re planting a few bulbs, think about pots. A good early display of tulips and fritillaries in a pot close to the house really starts the spring off with panache.
Finally it is an excellent time for lawn repairs as luckily on the south coast early frosts are rare. Turf and seed will take quickly while the soil is still warm and there is rain to keep it moist. Scoop out the seeds and any loose flesh using the dessert spoon. 3. Sketch a face or spooky design onto your pumpkin. Use a biro so that any mistakes can be scrubbed off with a scouring pad. 4. Carefully cut out the features. Make small cuts using a puncturing motion rather than a slicing one. 6. Using the knife, mark a circle the size of your candle or tea-light in the centre of the base. 7. Carefully hollow out the marked area with the teaspoon. 8. Place your candle in the hollow, light it and replace the lid of your jack o’ lantern.
Hah! Hah! Q. What do you call a witch who lives at the beach? A. A sand-witch. Q. What do you call a skeleton who won’t work? A. Lazy bones Q. Do zombies eat popcorn with their fingers? A. No, they eat the fingers separately. Q. Why are graveyards so noisy? A. Because of all the coffin!
Funky Facts
This eerie info is all about Halloween, which is on October 31 • The biggest pumpkin in the world weighed a whopping 821kg – that’s about the weight of a small caravan. • The record for the fastest pumpkin carver ever goes to Steve Clarke from Pennsylvania in the United States. He carved a pumpkin in just one minute and 14.8 seconds! • Black cats were originally believed to protect witches’ powers from negative forces. • Halloween is linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-an or sow-in). This name is derived from Old Irish and means roughly ‘summer’s end’. • The ancient Celts thought that spirits and ghosts wandered the streets on Halloween so they began wearing masks and costumes so that they weren’t recognised as human. • The American tradition of carving pumpkins was originally a harvest time tradition, but gradually people started carving pumpkins for Halloween too.

MUMS ON A MISSION
KIDS’ DIARY Family Food Day Saturday October 22 Children’s cup cake workshop, craft activities, cookery demonstrations, family food treasure hunt and wild food forage for younger children. Various locations in Arundel, see www.arundelfoodfestival.org.uk
Worthing mums Vicki Thorne and Laura Moore have set themselves a huge challenge. They are aiming to raise a joint target of £50,000 to help their children, who have quadriplegic cerebral palsy. When Laura’s son William (above) was a baby, she was put in touch with Vicki and her daughter Iona-May (now five) by health professionals. “It would be difficult to do this sort of fundraising on our own, so it’s great that we have each other,” says Laura. “William can’t sit, stand or use his hands and he has a visual impairment, but he is a really happy boy,” she says. Laura and Vicki first needed to fundraise to pay for therapy for the children. With that done, their new aim is to raise money for adaptations to both of their houses. The children need downstairs bedrooms and bathrooms, wider doors and access to the garden. “These improvements would make a huge difference to our lives,” says Laura. “William is only two and a half now but he’s already really heavy and he’s only going to get bigger! I have to carry him up the stairs and he fights all the way. He can’t weight bear at all so it’s really difficult.” If you’d like to help Laura and Vicki, you can go along to one of their charity events this month. There’s a Spooktacular Seafront Stroll on Saturday October 29 (see page 8) and a charity auction hosted by ITV’s Ian Towning on Saturday October 15 where you can win a chef for the night. In the kitchen with… Askor Ali, Maahan Restaurant Tell us about your restaurant? Mahaan has been established for over 30 years and is one of Worthing’s premier restaurants. This is only possible with good friendly service and quality food preparations. We only use top quality herbs and spices, which is the most important element in our cooking. We have a very long list of loyal customers and without them we would not be where we are today, so a big thank you to all our customers. What is your signature dish? My signature dish would be Shorisha Mas – a ‘home cooking’ style fish dish made with mustard seeds. What is your favourite ingredient? Ayer fish is one of my favourite ingredients along with shatkora (a citrus fruit) and shorisha (mustard). We use all of these a lot in the Mahaan. It’s your last meal on earth – what will you have? Charity begins at home
They have served the community for 20 years, now Worthing Churches Homeless Project needs your help In 1990 a group of Christians started taking soup and blankets to the homeless on the streets of Worthing. From those small beginnings, the Worthing Churches Homeless Projects (WCHP) has grown to the charity it is today, with four residential projects and a day centre. Employing 50 people and with 200 volunteers, they help people to lead an independent life in their own accommodation. The most frequent cause of homelessness is relationship or marital breakdown or a young person being thrown out of home. A homeless person has no access to the basic things which many of us take for granted. They feel unloved, uncared for, and totally alone and frightened.
Worthing Churches Homeless Projects adopt a holistic approach, looking at the whole person and their life. The first port of call for someone living on the streets is St Clare’s Day Centre. Open 365 days a year, they provide an invaluable service. On average 20 people a day access this service and have a cooked breakfast served by volunteers. Whilst attending the day centre, clients are assessed for access to one of the hostels. Sadly there is always a waiting list. The charity has four hostels each working with people at different points on their journey out of homelessness. The charity relies on the support of local people. You can donate by visiting their website or sending your donation (see below for details). The charity is always in need of clothing and food as well as items to sell in their charity shop. The charity also run a full calendar of events throughout the year, see below for details. WCHP, 13 Grafton Road, Worthing, BN11 1QP For more details: www.wchp.org.uk / 01903 227829

One of the most important aspects of the AFN is the voluntary work they offer to vulnerable people in the community. Adur has the highest unemployment levels in West Sussex and the second highest percentage of lone parents. For health deprivation seven wards within Adur have been rated within the top 20 most deprived wards in West Sussex.
Volunteering helps people feel included in their local areas. It combats feelings of isolation, improves self worth and enhances both mental and physical well being. As one current volunteer puts it: “A sense of knowing I belong (as it’s not easy as a physically disabled person) makes me feel happier in myself. I feel I’m doing something worthwhile which helps combat my depression.” Adur Furniture Network, Brighton Road, Shoreham by Sea Revival, Brunswick Road, Shoreham by Sea 01273 441700 / 01273 446615 www.adurfn1.org.uk

Shades of success
Do you feel like you’ve got a bulging wardrobe but nothing that suits you? We talk to Cathy Hesling from Confident Colours about how colour matching could mean never searching for something to wear again “I do feel a bit like Gok Wan,” says Cathy. “People come to me because they are either lacking in confidence or unsure about their colours and style, so I try to boost their self-belief and encourage them to try things that will make them look and feel good.” You may have heard of colour matching. It’s all about harmonising your skin tone and eye colour to one of four groups of colours (which are represented by the seasons), and then determining whether you suit warm or cool shades best. “I used to work in Spain,” says Cathy. “When I came back to grey old London I felt that life had lost a bit of its colour.” So she decided to get her colours done with a friend and from there her future business was born. “After this I’d wear bright red shirts with my grey suit to make a statement,” she says.
Bored with the same old clothes Would you like a change of image? Let me help you refresh your look in just one day!! A two-hour Colour Consultation will transform your appearance. You will be shown different shades of colour that will enhance your complexion to such a degree that it can take years off you! A complementary make up to follow will accentuate your skin tone, eye and hair colour so that they all work together in harmony. A half-day Shopping Trip will be enough to guide you with your style and colour and give you enough confidence to set you on your way.
Go on… give it a go!! You will love it! After all, we all need a little pampering!! It also makes a great gift for (hate to say it so soon but…) Christmas!!
Call Cathy on 07941392868 or email cathy@confidentcolours.com www.confidentcolours.com
The process is fairly simple: The client sits in front of a mirror in natural light, with their clothing and hair covered. Different coloured drapes are placed under the client’s chin until the best shades are found. “You have to match like with like,” says Cathy. “So if a person has a warm complexion they’ll need warm coloured clothing.” Cathy then applies appropriately-coloured make-up and takes the client

it!
on a shopping trip so that they can buy clothes in their new shades whilst paying particular attention to their body shape and style to show off their best features. “The aim is to bring out someone’s best features,” says Cathy. “Their eyes should look brighter and their skin smoother with fewer blemishes. No one has ever said that they can’t see the difference.”
David Hunt is 42 and works as a consultant at Worthing hospital. He decided to get his colours done after his wife tried it and he says he would highly recommend this process to other men. “I’m reasonably broad minded” says David, “so it didn’t take lots of persuasion to get me to do this”. “I’ve always been comfortable in suits, but not in casual clothing. I think that’s because I’ve always made more of an impact in suits.” “The experience itself was really entertaining,” says David. “I realised I was wearing all the wrong colours – far too much black and white.” David is warm autumn, which most red-heads are, so he can wear gold, mustards, greens, oranges and khakis.

Happy Hundredth, Mrs Sparkles! Staff and residents at The Shelley residential care home in Worthing are getting ready to celebrate a very special birthday They call her Mrs Sparkles, because of her glamorous look and glittering jewellery. And at 99 and a bit, Vera Barns still has plenty of sparkle in her own personality. She’s looking forward to her hundredth birthday on October 25, with a congratulatory telegram from Her Majesty and a fabulous party with family and friends to celebrate the occasion. “Our chef, Peter is preparing a gorgeous tea, and we’ll be entertained by Mr Richard ‘Shiny Shoes’, our handsome crooner, by special request from Vera,” says Marlene, The Shelley’s owner. “It’s going to be a wonderful afternoon.” Vera herself is the best advertisement ever for living to a hundred. Petite and elegant, her clear eyes and smooth skin would be the envy of women half her age. She still walks well, and goes out regularly for lunch with friends – but does confess to enjoying a short nap in the afternoons, just to recharge her batteries. Born in 1911 in Southend on Sea, Vera has always loved
the seaside. She remembers the town in those far off days, with the sounds of horses and carts and errand boys whistling. Later, Vera moved to London, and at 19 she married Cecil. “He was a very kind man and so easy to love,” she says. “We were together for 60 years.” Vera’s secret of longevity? “It’s having a positive attitude,” she says firmly. “Don’t worry about anything, put up with whatever happens to you
and just get on with the job. There have been times in my life when I’ve felt very low, but I’ve told myself to shut up and pushed myself to continue. It’s always worked for me!”

My October memories
EW 21
Splash FM breakfast presenter Richard Reynolds takes us back to his student days October, eh? I guess when most people think of October they recall cold, dark nights, conkers, leaves on the line and Halloween. Not me. When I hear the word ‘October’ I think of U2. I’d best explain. October was U2’s second album and was released in 1981. It was, and is, a glorious album full of religious imagery and swirling guitar and piano pieces.
In 1981, when I was a Computer Studies student at Brighton Polytechnic (now a university of course), there was a buzz going around about this brilliant live band from Dublin. One wet Sunday afternoon we were standing outside the back door of the Top Rank in Brighton, hoping to catch a glimpse of U2 arriving for their gig. Our patience paid off as four scruffy young men

emerged from a battered mini-bus. They seemed genuinely surprised that a bunch of strangers were waiting in the rain for them. They stopped and chatted and then to our amazement invited us in to watch the sound-check. I wonder what would happen if you stood outside the stage door of whatever huge stadium U2 are packing out now, trying to catch Bono’s eye? I guess,

ESSENTIAL HEALTH
EW
Dr Sarah has the last word

How far should the state intervene on our health choices? I heard an item on the radio a little while ago, detailing government proposals for a ‘fat tax’, i.e. a levy payable on ‘fatty’ foods, presumably to dissuade consumption. It got me thinking. As a competent over 18 in a democratic country I expect to have the freedom to choose my behaviour as far as it doesn’t impact on others. Wearing seatbelts is mandatory, not because anyone actually cares if I smash my head through the windscreen, but because when I do, it’s jolly expensive. Excessive drinking and smoking are also expensive habits in terms of the long-term health needs they generate and the impact on the wider welfare state. If the state pays for the consequences of these choices, do they have a right to discourage their practice? Although we – the taxpayers – are the state, so technically it’s our money anyway. How much should be carrot (if you’ll forgive the pun) and how much stick? How do we keep to clear messages about health implications and avoid the inevitable extrapolation into morality?
For me, splitting health and morality is crucial. Public health policy should be clearly about imparting education and information. As long as people have access to information, are making informed choices, and are willing to take responsibility for them, whether we approve of those choices is entirely irrelevent. So, the facts are as follows: smoking causes cancer and loads of other horrible respiratory problems. Drinking excess alcohol makes you ill and
ruins your social relationships, eating too much and doing too little makes you fat. Fat makes you ill. If you know all this and choose these things anyway, that is your right in a free country. Just be thankful we have an NHS, which treats according to need, not means or moral worth.
