From the Editor Stop a moment. Stand still. Take a look at the shape of that tree on the horizon. Listen to the fascinating sound of the waves as they swoosh over the pebbles on the seashore. Enjoy an autumn sunset in all its fiery splendour. You’re doing something most of us forget to include as a necessary part of our lives. It’s called Taking a Breather. I’m only mentioning this because I’m so hopeless at it. For those of us with a frantic schedule – and, at a rough guess, that encompasses about 85% of the population, give or take a few – Taking a Breather is an activity that’s all bound up with guilt. Because, if we simply “stand and stare” as the poet advises, all kinds of ghastly niggles assail us. Should we really be wasting time in this frivolous way? Isn’t there something far more Useful and Businesslike that we should be grappling with? And who needs a sunset, anyway? If you’re tempted to think in this way, here’s a quote I came across recently that could change your mind. It certainly changed mine.

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass watching the clouds float across the sky is hardly a waste of time.” So let’s all make a conscious decision to relax our brains – not for ever, but for a moment or two. I reckon the results could be quite surprising. How was it for you?

6 Essential Showbiz

A real premier production Sussex Musical Productions brings us Rice / Lloyd-Webber’s first collaboration

Thanks to West Sussex Library Service for help with image scanning.

The Likes of Us was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, at the age of 17, and former Lancing College student Tim Rice, then 21. Worthing, through Sussex Musical Productions, has been lucky enough to secure the south east coast premier of this musical to showcase this early talent. It’s part of a revolutionary move by Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful

Group, in conjunction with the National Operatic and Dramatic Association, to release the musical to amateur theatres across the region. At the time of writing it, the pair was unknown and not able to sell the show in London. Their second collaboration, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat was the start of a great success

story, and The Likes of Us was almost lost. Based on the life of Doctor Thomas Barnado and the foundation of his children’s homes, the production will help Barnados by inviting the charity into the theatre during the week to fund-raise and promote their work. The show has a cast that includes 36 children, some of whose parents and grandparents appear with them on stage. Set in 1866, the story tells how Doctor Barnado, (pictured on archive lantern slide) intent on cleaning up the East End of London, discovered the plight of the street children and set up homes for them. The charity is still very active today, but thankfully the street urchin is no longer a common sight. The show runs from Tuesday November 16 to Saturday November 20, 7.30pm with matinees on Wednesday and Saturday, 2.30pm. Tickets from the Pavilion Theatre, £11 – £15 with concessions. Call 01903 206206 or visit www. sussexmusicalproductions.co.uk for more information

Tuesday 16th to Saturday 20th November 2010

There are some great shows coming to the Pavilion Theatre this month, but as they’re only here for one night you’ll have to be quick. Wednesday October 6 The Vagina Monologues, 8pm. Talks funnily, openly and poignantly about women’s most intimate secrets with hilarious and revelatory results. Wednesday October 20 The Screwtape Letters, 7.30pm. Nigel Forde’s adaptation brings to life the satirical classic comedy by CS Lewis, in which senior devil Screwtape instructs his junior apprentices in the fine art of temptation. Friday October 22 Old Dog, New Tricks, 8pm. The Grumpy Old Women team captain Jenny Eclair presents a new show filled with her trademark stand-up gags. She tries not to mind that she’s 50 years old this year, but proves she’s still got what it takes to be an award-winner (Crufts 1982). Worthing’s own Alexis A beautiful voice to grace your party Your chance to win a set of six Christmas cards, designed by our cover artist Worthing based Erica Sturla, is well known for her fun pieces using polymer clay figures. “I love working in this medium because it’s very smooth and comes in fantastic colours,” she explains. “I model my figures in sections and when I’m happy with the result I bake the clay in the oven. Then I’m ready to

assemble the sections on the canvas using a hot glue gun. I enjoy making quirky, amusing scenes, using characters based on people I know. They’re lots of fun because they’re almost like 3D cartoons.” And did you know – Erica also designs and makes greetings cards in her own inimitable style? Now’s your chance to win a pack of six Christmas cards, featuring two different, fun designs.

Win tickets for an unsinkable musical treat

When the “unsinkable” Titanic set sail from Southampton on her maiden voyage in 1912, none of its passengers or crew could guess the fate that awaited them. The true taste of Nepal New faces at the Gun We’ve been sampling some exotic delights at Om Restaurant

If you love the delicious spicy flavours of Indian cuisine, it’s high time you treated yourself to a taste of Nepal – so a visit to Om Restaurant in Rowlands Road is an absolute must. Regular diners already know about the mouth-watering range of traditional dishes from different Nepalese regions – and owner/ Chef Roj Kumar Lama is more than ready to welcome new customers. Each dish is individually prepared using fresh ingredients, and Roj grinds all his own spices for the perfect combination of flavours. For a fabulous starter we love Lamb Choila, grilled with

zesty spices and a touch of chilli. Be warned, though – this packs quite a punch, so if you prefer a milder flavour, go for crunchy Vegetable Pakora served with a minty yogurt dip. When it comes to the main event, we strongly recommend Khasi Taang – tender lamb shank, slow cooked to perfection and served in a traditional spicy vegetable sauce with sliced marrow, tomatoes and fresh herbs. Or try Chicken Gurkhali, prepared in a rich masala sauce, and topped with cheese, cream and almonds. It’s smooth, rich and utterly delicious. We’ll be back for more.

Great new menus from Sally and Lewis Can we tempt you to warm goat’s cheese bruschetta with hazelnut vinaigrette followed by slow roasted belly of freerange pork? If you have room for dessert, maybe you fancy baked Baileys cheesecake or red berry & cassis parfait. These are just some of the delicious options available on the evening menu produced by the new owners of The Gun in Findon. Formerly at Pestle & Mortar, Sally and Lewis have created a warm, welcoming atmosphere and would love you to join them. Let’s get fresh at Bryce’s We’ve been tasting some fabulously fishy dishes

If you love fresh fish, beautifully cooked and presented in style, you probably already know about Bryce’s Seafood Brasserie, with its elegant bay windows fronting the promenade at the corner of Worthing’s Steyne Gardens. What you may not know is – this excellent restaurant now has a new general manager, working with a strong team of chefs to bring

you a fabulous new menu. “Our head chef, Anthony Masters has an impressive background of Michelin star cooking and fine dining, so he’s passionate enough to bring those top level skills into a relaxed brasserie atmosphere,” explains manager Carole Lindsay-Mearns. “We get most of our fish straight from the beach at Goring and Shoreham,

so you can be sure it’s superbly fresh and tasty.” We couldn’t wait to sample the menu. We began with Dived King Scallops, delicately tender and served with spinach, pancetta and aubergine yogurt. Bryce’s leave the coral (the orange part of the scallop) attached, which gives a superb flavour. If you prefer your scallops to pack a little more punch, try the Queenies from Loch Fyne in Scotland, served with spinach and creamy hollandaise sauce. We tried both – and they’re delectable. We were also persuaded to sample a rock oyster or two – and these just burst in the mouth, delivering the very freshest taste of the sea. Our advice on eating oysters? Chew, don’t swallow – it’s the only way to experience the fabulous taste. Moving on to the main course, we tried Pan Fried Local

Black Bream, a pink-fleshed fish with oodles of flavour, served with a rich crab risotto and lemon and parsley sauce. If you enjoy a meatier fish, go for Pan Fried Wing of Local Skate, served on the bone with a crab and parmesan gremalata. And for gorgeous white flesh that simply melts in the mouth, we heartily recommend keeping it simple, with Whole Grilled Plaice served with lemon butter and new potatoes. This is a dish which lends a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘less is more’ – and we loved it. Bryce’s is open for lunch and dinner, and you can order a la carte, from the specials board or from the set menu. For sophisticated ambience and top class fish cooked to perfection, this restaurant really takes some beating. To book your table, call 01903 214317.

Light up your home

Before

Cobsen-Davies Daylight do it the natural way As autumn arrives and the days grow shorter, do you wish you didn’t need to turn on the lights quite so early? Even during the day, rooms that don’t have direct sunlight can seem gloomy and depressing. Cobsen-Davies Daylight have the skills to bring natural light into your rooms – light that is free and doesn’t feel synthetic like most light bulbs. The way they perform this miracle is by placing a polycarbonate dome on your roof to capture sunlight and refract it down into the system. Highly reflective tubing passes the light through the loft area into the room below, effectively bringing the outside light indoors. It works for offices too – they’ve even worked their

magic in the US Embassy in Grosvenor Square. The first step is to give CobsenDavies Daylight a call and discuss your specific requirements. They will give you a free quotation, either for supply only or supply and installation. The company is part of the Cobsen-Davies Group who have over 50 years roofing experience in the local area, so are ideally placed to install the system into any type of roof. They will give you a two-year installation guarantee alongside the manufacturer’s ten-year warranty, to provide you with peace of mind.

As with most products, there are different levels of quality, and you do get what you pay for. With CobsenDavies and the Solatube® system, you will have the brightest and highest quality system, according to independent tests. CobsenDavies Daylight are able to offer these systems from as low as £474 + VAT installed. In a recent school installation, a teacher commented, “I have lost count of the number of people who have thought that there are lights on. In terms of energy saving and bringing natural light into classrooms, they are the ideal option.” Bringing natural daylight

Everyone loves daylight – so why leave it outside?

Essential Pets 15

Who’s that pet? ID is vital, says Holly Ross at Shoreline Pet Supplies

Although it seems a simple thing to do, many people are still not tagging their dogs or cats. If you’ve ever had your cat go astray or your dog run off, you’ll remember that terrible feeling of never seeing them again. The best way for your beloved pet to get back to you is through the ready information you provide on their collar – and if they should lose their collar a microchip will ensure you’ll be reunited. Identification is the key mechanism for reuniting lost dogs and cats with their owners. Under the control of Dogs Act 1992 every dog must wear a collar when in a public place, carrying the name and address of the owner, or on a disc attached to the collar. It’s also helpful to have a contact phone number. Visible identification

discourages cruelty, theft and fraud, and helps safeguard the welfare of your animal. Micro-chipping is a very positive step to take – the chip is no bigger than a grain of rice and it is inserted into the scruff of the neck with a syringe. The Microchip has a unique registration number and your animal’s details are stored on a database All vets and rescue centres scan cats and dogs if they are found without any ready identification. So many unidentified cats and dogs end up in rescue centres throughout the UK and it’s vital we do everything we can to make sure our pets get back to us safely. If you’re worried about a lost pet, call Shoreline Pet Supplies on 01903 243100 and we’ll do everything we can to help.

Could your cat have toothache? Have you looked at your cat’s teeth recently? asks Amanda of Cat’s Whiskers Veterinary Clinic With as many as 70% of cats over the age of three suffering from some form of dental disease, now is a good time for your cat to have a dental health check. A healthy mouth has pale pink gums and bright white teeth. Smelly breath, red or bleeding gums and pawing at the mouth can be signs of gum inflammation or gingivitis – and is usually due to an unhealthy accumulation of plaque bacteria on the teeth. If left untreated, gingivitis will progress and can result in destruction of the tooth supporting structures and tooth loss. Dental disease is detrimental to a cat’s health – bacteria spread via the bloodstream from the mouth to affect other organs particularly the kidneys and heart valves. Dental disease is a significant cause of pain. Often cats show no outward signs and will continue to eat, so regular dental checks are essential. We can advise on diets and homecare to keep your cat’s mouth healthy. We are fully equipped to perform a dental scale and polish to remove calculus and harmful bacteria, and to take dental x-rays to check for painful lesions below the gum line which are not visible in the

mouth. Broken, painful and infected teeth will need to be removed to prevent pain and infection. Don’t think of dentistry as being trivial or cosmetic. It’s vital for your cat’s overall health and wellbeing. To book your cat in for a dental check, contact Cat’s Whiskers on 01903 830577 and arrange an appointment.

Scary stuff – it’s almost Halloween! Chris “Coppo” Copsey dons his ghoulish mask

Across the pond, our American friends have celebrated AllHallows Eve in a big way for as long as I can remember – but it’s only in recent years we as a nation have started following suit. Personally I’m not a fan of the art of Trick-or-Treating, unless first seeking advance permission from the person whose door you’re about to knock on. This, in some way at least, protects our elderly folk who may not understand these American-style high jinks.

However, I am a fan of scaring the living daylights out of people who really want to be spooked or give me the impression they do! Just ask those who have had the misfortune to have me jump out at them while wearing my ghoulish mask, which sadly now requires a replacement after far too much use in recent years. I can’t explain why I have this impulse to induce a scream from people I love and care for, but it does give me pleasure and uncontrollable laughter sometimes at the effect of my shock therapy. It probably comes as no surprise to hear that I have also received the odd slapping by friends who did not see the funny side of my antics. Or maybe they were still in shock? Worryingly, this urge to frighten my best friends at

any opportunity has now been handed down to my kids, who both dish out their fair share of shock treatment, mostly to their parents. We’re one shocking family! So once again this month we will be making our annual pilgrimage to the spook capital of Sussex – Tulley’s Farm at Turners Hill and their famous Halloween Festival. This has developed over the last fifteen years into what is now recognised as the UK’s largest dedicated Halloween event. It’s actually two parks in one, with fantastic scare attractions at night in the Shocktoberfest Scream Park alongside a daytime Octoberfest Fun Park which offers great fun for families and little ones.

So look out for the Copsey family if you’re planning a terrifyingly entertaining night at Tulley’s Farm In the coming month, it could be me you’ll be standing next to while screaming your head off. But that’s okay, it means the Shocktober Fest is as good as ever, with five haunted attractions to scare you silly including the Field of Screams, It’s Curtains Maze2, the Cellar Haunted House and Creepy Cottage. But promise me you’ll leave the best until last – the Haunted Hayride – a spooktacular way to round off your visit to the ghoulish HQ of Sussex. Have a great month, Happy Halloween and thanks for listening to Splash on 107.7 FM.

The elephant in the room – is it here to stay?

We’re talking obesity, compulsive eating, and other food disorders here – problems that now affect one in four adults in the UK, and that’s over 1.1 million people. These are complex conditions with physical and emotional consequences which often cause people to seek help from their GP. An exceedingly high risk group are females aged between 14 and 25. Young people often use overeating,

under-eating, types of purging, or a mixture of the three to help them cope with life. Unless addressed early on, these behaviours and conditions are reinforced as lifelong coping strategies – and can even prove fatal. Pathways for Recovery is an exciting new local service focusing on the psychological aspects of disordered and chaotic eating. Diets can

address weight loss initially, but they do not disengage the emotional and social reasons a person uses food (or starvation) to cope. That’s why the service provides a professional, psychotherapeutic programme of individual counselling and time limited group interventions to help disentangle the problem. “I worked in Primary Care Mental Health Services in West Sussex for some time, and often encountered food, weight, and image difficulties found just underneath the stated problems people bring to their GP,” says

Essential Care 19

Where the heart is Wraysbury’s a home in the true sense

When someone reaches a stage of their life when they need to live in a secure, protected environment, they want to be sure they can still remain as active as possible. At Wraysbury, the brand new EMI home in Beccles Road, there are ample opportunities to stimulate the

mind and exercise the body to full potential. The building, which has been completely refurbished, is laid out so that each ensuite room is the resident’s private domain while remaining part of the community. Assisted baths are also available on each floor. There’s an elegant lounge, a library and smart dining room that give a real country house hotel feel. The large conservatory that runs behind these rooms can be used all year round, with views of the garden which is accessed by gently sloping ramps. It is currently laid to lawn and rose beds but will have raised beds added for next Spring. Meanwhile the leafy surround gives a pleasant, calm outlook from inside the conservatory. Says owner Alice Bock, “I want the residents to feel relaxed and completely at

home. Our ethos is to allow each individual to live life according to their own choices – not those prescribed by others. Having a secure site, we don’t need to lock doors or overmedicate unnecessarily.” Wraysbury House was originally bequeathed to Worthing Society for the Blind, who ran it as a home for many years before selling it to raise funds for their new needs. Alice has taken this lovely old house and re-modelled it to the standard and style she requires. She has now started taking in the first residents and is very happy to give a guided tour to anyone interested in securing a place. “There will be entertainment, activities and an Internet café,” says Alice, “as well as a hairdressing salon and aromatherapy sessions.”

Respite care is also available, giving carers a chance for a wellearned break. It’s also a good way to find out if it’s the way forward for an elderly infirm relative who is struggling at home. 20 Essential Care

Tucking into Autumn at the Shelley

It may be the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, but residents at The Shelley are looking forward to an Autumn menu of gorgeous local produce. Chef duo Simon and Jo will be hard at work in the kitchen, preparing a tantalising choice of seasonal fare at lunch and supper – with an excellent breakfast and all kinds of snacks on offer, too. “Nobody ever goes hungry at The Shelley,” says owner

Marlene Sanders. “There’s so much to choose from – not only at mealtimes, but right through the day. And if anyone fancies a three-course meal in the middle of the night, that’s no problem, either!” Pumpkin soup, plum crumble, apple and blackberry pie are just some of the scrumptious dishes planned for The Shelley’s Autumn menu – and everything is always beautifully presented to tempt even the most delicate of appetites. “We have desserts and cakes to die for – and that can be a serious temptation for our staff, who love popping into the kitchen for a taste of this and that,” says Marlene. “Most of our residents have hearty appetites, and sometimes I wonder where they put it all. After a cooked

breakfast, followed by lunch, teatime snacks and a good supper, you’d think they’d all be queuing up for our exercise classes. But at the first suggestion of exercise, it’s amazing how quickly the room clears! That’s human nature, I’m afraid.” There’s always plenty of choice on The Shelley menu, with a roast or curry for lunch, plenty of seasonal vegetables and a lighter option, often salad or an omelette. And there’s a choice of two cooked suppers or a sandwich, if preferred. We asked a few residents to tell us their favourites – and here’s what we discovered. “I’m fond of lovely warming stews and casseroles,” says Phyllis. “And pumpkin soup with warm bread is nice, too.”

Ethel’s favourite is apple and blackberry crumble with lashings of custard. And Jack tells us he likes autumn pudding with autumn fruits. “Home made rice pudding with plum jam is also a winner,” he adds. Ex-chef Peter, activities co-ordinator had the brilliant idea of organising tasting sessions, and he’s been running these for some time. “We’ve explored all kinds of flavours, from fish, cheese, cakes and chutneys to wines, beers, ciders and cordials,” he says. “There’s always something new and exciting to try each time, and these events are a huge hit with everyone. Food is a great talking point, and everyone gets an information sheet about the different foods, as well as a score sheet to record their preferences.”

Fancy a sing song for Marie Curie Cancer Care?

Marie Curie Cancer Care is inviting everyone to Sing Out for Marie Curie Cancer Care this Christmas. Whether you are singing with a choir, friends, a church group or just in the shower, the charity wants you to dedicate a Christmas performance to them. Every note sung will help Marie Curie Nurses provide free nursing care to patients

with terminal cancer and other illnesses in their own homes. Marie Curie Nurses will be working throughout Christmas and the New Year, ensuring terminally ill patients can spend Christmas at home with their families. Last year, Marie Curie Nurses cared for 349 patients on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day All you need to do is choose a date any time during November and December to hold your singing event. Decide where you are going to host your event – it could be anywhere, such as your local church, town hall, shopping centre, workplace or school. And then warm up those vocal cords and get practising. Registration is open until November 26. To find out more about how you can organise your own event, call 08700 340 040 or visit www. mariecurie.org.uk/singout.

Quirky Surrealism at Worthing Art Gallery Surrealist-inspired sculpture and mixed media work – that’s what’s on the artistic menu in Worthing Museum’s Garden and Gallery, with the launch of Sussex-born Anthony Veale’s first local exhibition. Anthony showcases as many as 30 significant pieces of his work, including the literal Lead Balloons, the René Magritteinspired Consensus and provocative double-entendre pieces such as Frutti and Homogenous Erogenous. This eye-catching exhibition is all about creativity and experimentation, and celebrates Anthony’s interest in the fun side of humanity. It’s quirky, thought-provoking and something you can’t miss as you walk past the Museum Garden. Why not drop in and experience the rest?

Mother and Child

The heat is on As the nights draw in and the weather turns colder West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service are urging people to be aware of the dangers of chimney fires. Open fires and wood burning stoves are a comforting way to keep the winter chill at bay but they can become a serious safety hazard if simple guidelines are not followed. Safety Tips • Have your chimney swept at least once a year, twice a year if burning wood. • When burning wood, use dry, seasoned woods only. • Build smaller, hotter fires that burn completely and produce less smoke. • Never burn cardboard boxes or waste paper. • NEVER use petrol or paraffin to light your fire. • Do not overload the grate or appliance. • Use a fire or spark guard to prevent accidental fires. • Inspect your chimney breast, particularly in the roof space. Make sure that it is sound and that the sparks or fumes cannot escape through cracks or broken bricks. • Ensure the fire is fully extinguished before going to bed or leaving the house. • Make sure wood burners and other fire appliances are installed and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. • Make sure your smoke alarm is working properly, as early detection can save lives. Fire safety advice is free and easy to access from West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s Community Safety Team on 01243 642878 or www.westsussex.gov.uk/fire

Walking up an appetite at West Sussex Festival

Anthony Veale’s exhibition opens on October 9 and runs right through until the middle of January, so there’s plenty of time to take a look.

Why not take a hike this October during the West Sussex Food and Countryside Festival? The event is organised by walking groups Footprints of Sussex and Per-Rambulations, and supported by West Sussex County Council. It runs from Friday October 8 to Sunday October 10.During the three days, you’ll be able to sample local wine and food – then burn it off on one of 12 walks led by experienced guides. The walks vary in length from a stroll of two miles to a full day hike of more than 10 miles. Many of the walks will visit local farms and producers. On Saturday, there’s a chance to visit the indoor local produce market at the White Horse, Steyning, where producers will be offering free tastings of the best of Sussex food and wine. The festival finishes on Sunday afternoon with a splendid barbecue at the White Horse, where there will be a free prize draw, with some great outdoor prizes from Regatta to be won. Further details and booking forms are at www.foodandcountryside.co.uk or from any West Sussex Library.

26 Essential Zodiac A fun, friendly look at what’s in the stars for you in October

AQUARIUS

LEO

As an intellectual type you’re not particularly comfortable with an excess of emotion interfering with your thought processes. You love to express yourself in a logical way, which is why you may encounter a few problems this month – particularly when it comes to dealing with the ultra-sensitive souls in your life. Stay aware of other people’s feelings and try to temper your matter-of-fact approach with a little gentleness.

Your career seems to be chugging along nicely, so now’s the time to focus on home and family. You may find yourself longing for some emotional harmony and are perhaps seeking this in a wave of nostalgia. By all means use those thoughts of ‘the good old days’ as a basis for analysis, but don’t build your dreams on them.

(Jan 21 – Feb 19)

PISCES

(Feb 20 – March 20)

(July 24 – Aug 23)

VIRGO

(Aug 24 – Sept 23)

Say goodbye to a large dollop of stress that’s been plaguing you for the past few months. You’re feeling energised and generally good about yourself, which means you’re on the path to achieving those goals you set yourself way back in the summer. If you’re having dreams about the past, don’t fret. You can use them to learn something highly valuable about your future.

You’re feeling lucky and prosperous, but not because you’ve been sitting around twiddling your thumbs. On the contrary, you’ve been going the extra mile for bosses, and clients – and all this hard work is starting to pay off. Your communication skills are hot stuff, so take this opportunity to catch up on phone calls, blogs and emails. Touch base with people you haven’t contacted in a while – it’s time to re-stock your mind.

ARIES

LIBRA

Take a long, hard look at your finances this month. This is no time to make important decisions about money, or to make major purchases or investments. This doesn’t mean you should stop buying groceries, of course – just be careful with the big things. When it comes to romance, you’re feeling sexy and exciting, whatever your age. Sounds like good news for your significant other!

You’re feeling charismatic, glamorous and sexy this month – and if you fancy a spot of pampering now’s the time to indulge. Money matters are looking promising, and you’ll find social connections very useful financially, particularly through your spouse or partner. Happy travel opportunities are coming your way, and it’s important to find time to take advantage of these.

TAURUS

SCORPIO

Your energy levels have been a tad low in the past six months – but the good news is, you’ve had plenty of rest and are now ready to face every day with zest and enthusiasm. Because you’re so well-disciplined and hard-working, you are every boss’s dream – but be careful not to overdo things. Serious is good, but you need to lighten up and have some fun, too.

If you’ve been feeling uncertain about a love relationship recently you’ll be aware that these are testing times. Maybe you and your beloved need to stand back for a while and take a good look at the bigger picture. Above all, don’t panic or try to force issues. Let love develop at its own pace – and it will.

GEMINI

SAGITTARIUS

Because there’s more direction in your life these days, you’re feeling altogether more confident – but don’t be surprised if the pace of your life slows a little as the month progresses. Take time to dot the i’s and cross the t’s – and don’t be tempted to take things for granted. Your love life is still going through a delicate phase, so avoid making major decisions about commitment.

You’ve been going through a period of change in your life recently, either with a close relationship or in your job. This could lead to a certain amount of restlessness and a strong need to get away from it all or strike out on your own. Your finances are looking good, with the chance of a nice windfall or perhaps a bit of luck with a foreign investment.

CANCER

CAPRICORN

Although you love to be independent, it’s more important right now to develop your ability to get along with others. You need the good opinion of those around you, so focus on honing your social skills and personal likeability. Romance is looking good, but if you’re single, beware of letting yourself be allured by the past, and don’t re-kindle old relationships. It’s time to move on.

Throughout this year you’ve been learning some valuable lessons about authority and power, and how best to use them. Now, with a few tricky matters well and truly settled, you’re able to see just how far – and how high – you’ve climbed. You’re in a strong position to call the shots, but watch your health and don’t take unnecessary risks with your own well-being.

Essential Dr Sarah 27

And Dr Sarah has the last word…

Working as I do at the front line of the Health Service, I am only too aware that many people in our town live in relative deprivation. We associate the South coast with relative affluence, and yet I encounter real poverty every day. Although I am loth to admit it, David Cameron’s recent talk of A Big Society got me thinking about volunteering. It’s easy not to, isn’t it? Aren’t we all so busy? What possible difference can we make as individuals? There seem so many worthy causes, so much need and so little time.

Every little helps Dr Sarah has some food for thought I first encountered the Worthing Food Bank on a supermarket visit, where I was presented with a simple list of food items. The idea is to buy one extra item while doing the rest of your shopping and donate it to the Food Bank on the way out. It is simple and effective – lots of people making a small gesture to make a big difference. The idea is beautifully simple and unthreatening, even to those with very little to spare themselves. Who can really not manage to buy an extra can or packet? I love the idea of the Food Bank for its simplicity. The need for food is universal, it does not depend on your race, religious or political beliefs. You cannot argue with food, we all need it. It’s not about ‘deserving’ but survival, and you can’t get more basic than that.

The Food Bank provides free emergency food for individuals and families in crisis. The organisation was pioneered in Salisbury by the Trussell Trust. The Worthing Food Bank opened in 2006 and is run by the Jubilee church with help from the Salvation Army and other churches and voluntary associations. A couple of weeks ago I helped out as a first time volunteer with my kids. It was rewarding and inspiring. At work I don’t always get to see the best of people, but saw such generosity of spirit in the people of Worthing as to restore completely my faith in human nature. It also served to remind us how circumstances can change, especially in such volatile economic times. Privilege can so quickly become need, and it’s easy to see how fortunes can be reversed. The actual time

commitment was minimal and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. The kids liked playing shops with all the produce and then sorting it into boxes – and also got them thinking, while having fun and interacting with people, that some families did not always look forward to nice dinners, treats and snacks. I’m not a fan of pious or conspicuous lecturing, but they got the message in a very positive way and are looking forward to our next session. It made me feel good too. It’s nice to see the better side of people and to feel you can make a difference, however small, to the little bit of the Earth you inhabit. Start small and local and we can all reap the benefits. Dr Sarah trained in Medicine at King’s College, London, and now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.
