Our Cover Art Competition – meet one of the winners
They do say creative people are nearly always left-handed – and this certainly applies to this month’s winning cover artist. We love the light-hearted, slightly zany take on the Worthing’s famous Birdman event, designed by local artist
Pete Slight (pictured). Pete enjoys working with cut paper, clay and mixed media models and usually exhibits with his photographer wife Sarah. You may remember a joint exhibition entitled Trees and Towers at Worthing Museum, which we featured in Essentially Worthing in November 2009. If you’re visiting the Isle of Wight this month, check out Pete and Sarah’s latest exhibition, Birds and Beasts, at the Quay Arts Centre in Newport, which runs throughout August and until Saturday September 10. Congratulations to Pete! To see more of his work, take a look at his website at www.smirkyherbert.co.uk

Dr Sarah has the last word
From the Editor As children all over the country spill out of classrooms and on to beaches everywhere, it’s high time to revive one of the great holiday traditions which may have escaped our consciousness during the winter months. Yes, we’re talking about the Intrepid British Sandcastle. As an early lesson in engineering, planning and construction, it has no equal. The equipment you need – bucket and spade – requires minimal outlay, with maximum family input. Perfect! If you’re embarking on a sandcastle project this summer, it’s probably best to have at least one kid with you, though. The solitary adult saddo digging his moat with a blue plastic spade may attract a few sniggers from passers by – unless, of course, he pretends he’s an ardent fisherman digging for bait. Even so, this ruse may wear a bit thin when it comes to decorating your sandy fortress with seaweed and shells. I’d also recommend choosing a spot on the beach that’s dog-free. (The vast chunk of sand at low tide between Heene Road and the

Pier is ideal.) For most dogs of my acquaintance sandcastles hold an irresistible fascination, and must be sniffed, explored and finally peed on – so do try to avoid any canine additions to the water in your carefully dug moat. And the very best thing about the impressive, towering result of your afternoon’s labour? The sure and certain knowledge that the tide will come in (watch out, King Canute!) and destroy all the evidence – leaving you and the kids free to begin all over again tomorrow. Happy digging!

These include members of 617 ‘Dambuster’ squadron, six holders of the DFC and three ex-POWs, so you’ll be in distinguished company! It’s all happening from 10am – 5pm. Admission £8 adults, £2 children from 5 – 15 years (no concessions). Car parking is free.
To find out more, call 01243 790090 or visit www.tangmere-museum.org.uk We’d love to see your photos of this event. If you’ve taken a fantastic picture, send it to edit@essentiallyworthing.co.uk – and we may use it in a future edition.
It’s almost 70 years to the day that RAF fighter ace Douglas Bader was shot down over Occupied France and became a POW in Colditz Castle until the end of the World War II. Contrary to popular belief, Bader lost both legs in a flying accident as early as 1931, and overcame his severe physical handicap with immense courage. Not only did he learn to walk again, he persuaded the RAF to let him fly operationally in Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain and after. His determination and courage is being celebrated this month at a very special event at Tangmere Military Aviation Museum on Sunday August 7.
The whole day has a World War II theme, with oodles of fun events for the whole family – including: • Flying display by two Spitfires of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and a North American Harvard (weather/ serviceability permitting). • Helicopter Joy Rides (extra charge – weather/ serviceability permitting) • Bader Trail with talks on the life and times of Bader while at Tangmere in 1941 Members of the Douglas Bader Foundation, a charity for the physically handicapped, will be there. And there’s also a signing by 14 Bomber Command Veterans, in aid of the Bomber Command Memorial Fund.

Treading the Boards There’s lots going on at Worthing’s theatres this month. Here’s our pick of some great live shows.
Chocks away, chaps! It’s the 4th annual Worthing International Birdman competition Birdmen everywhere are preening their feathers ready to take part in this brilliant event. The fun begins on Saturday August 13 from 11.35am to 1pm when the serious flyers show off their expertise in hi-spec flying machines, boasting wingspans of up to 30 feet. There’s also an opportunity for aviators to try a test flight in the new Vulcan class, which allows flying machines with a wingspan of up to 40 feet to launch – and that’s a UK first.
On Sunday August 14 it’s the turn of the fun flyers. From 12 noon to 2pm they’ll be launching themselves off the top of the 35 foot platform into the depths of the water below. Feathers crossed that they can stay in the air for a few minutes (or even seconds!) The serious aviators then take to the skies in a second attempt to fly over 100m – and the chance to win the much coveted £10,000 jackpot prize.

Early neutering is best Care for your pets – Preserve your young cat’s friendly nature
Sexual maturity in cats can lead to anti-social behaviour and unless they’re neutered early, their bad habits may not be reversible. Neutering prevents the risk of often unwanted kittens. Tomcats should ideally be castrated from four months old to prevent urine spraying indoors, roaming – especially at night – to gain territory, risking road traffic accidents and fighting, which can cause wounds, abscesses and transmission of FIV (cat AIDS) and FeLV (feline leukaemia virus). Spaying female cats from 4 months old offers several advantages. Once sexually mature, the queen will be “calling” for approximately one week out of every two to three until she is mated, displaying
loud, persistent crying, and frequent rubbing and rolling on the floor. Her scent will attract tomcats from miles around. All of this can be eliminated by neutering. Spaying removes the risk of uterine infection, and may possibly reduce future risk of breast cancer. There is no medical reason for letting your cat have a litter before she is neutered. During August, Cat’s Whiskers Veterinary Clinic is offering up to 30% discount on standard neutering prices. Cat’s Whiskers Veterinary Clinic at 125 South Farm Road, is open 6 days a week with a 24 hour emergency service. Call 01903 830 577, email info@cwvet.co.uk or visit www.cwvet.co.uk for information and help.

be directed at individual children – and no-one understands this better than the highly qualified team at Woodstock Day Nursery. Here are five good reasons for choosing Woodstock for your pre-schooler. • There’s a real family feel to the nursery, with small groups and many siblings attending at the same time. • An in-house artist works in the nursery one week every month, exploring creative activities with the children. • Milentos sessions build confidence through brain aerobics, music, imagination and games. They’re loads of fun! • There’s a storyteller to develop the children’s imagination and inspire individual story-telling. • The safe walled garden has a very large sandpit, safety play area with wobbly bridges, climbing frame, playhouses and plenty of room to run and ride bikes. You’ll find Woodstock Day Nursery at 1 Farncombe Road, Worthing. Call for a chat on 01903 233655, or visit www.nestledownchildcare.co.uk

WET DAYS, DRY DAYS whatever the weather We all know about the unpredictability of the Great British summer, so don’t worry if it looks like rain. There are plenty of ways to keep the kids amused during the holidays, and dodge those showers at the same time.
There’s plenty of creative family fun on offer this summer at the Creation Station Here’s a brilliant idea for kids from one to eleven. The award winning Creation Station invites families on an amazing journey of discovery, where you can use your imagination to create clay creatures, wonderful willow crowns, body badges and amazing “Big Art” life size paintings – all under the guidance of session leader, Aby Mason.
“We use a whole range of art and craft materials and we love to get really messy,” says Abi. “Children really enjoy the freedom of paint, glue and glitter – and parents love the fact they don’t have to clear it up!” The sessions cost just £5 per child and siblings can come along, too – at half price. Places are limited, so book early to avoid disappointment. Sessions are at Lancing Parish Hall, St Paul’s Centre, Worthing and East Preston Village Hall. For times and dates, call Aby on 0844 854 9186, email aby@thecreationstation. co.uk or visit www. thecreationstation.co.uk where you can download a wide range of creative activities to keep kids amused during weekends and holidays.
CHEERY CHUCKLES Q. A giraffe, an elephant, a camel, a bear, a pig, a frog, two mice and a snake all sheltered under one umbrella. How many got wet? A. None – it wasn’t raining. Q. What’s black and white and has sixteen wheels? A. A zebra on roller skates.
An afternoon at the theatre is loads of fun – and there are some fantastic live shows for kids at the Connaught and Pavilion this month. The Jungle Book, Connaught Theatre, Thursday August 25 – Saturday August 27, 1.30pm and 4.30pm. Travel to the heart of the jungle and join Mowgli and his friends for a musical adventure based on Rudyard Kipling’s classic tale. The Mr Men and Little Miss Party Roadshow, Pavilion Theatre, Tuesday August 30, 1pm. Ninety minutes of fun, celebrating the 40th birthday of these much-loved characters. And look out for a brand new character, too – Little Miss Princess.
Mr Benn, Pavilion Theatre, Wednesday August 17 (1.30pm) and Thursday August 18 (10.30am and 1.30pm). Mr Benn’s world is turned upside down when he stumbles across a small dusty shop overflowing with costumes. The shopkeeper appears and shows Mr Benn into a changing room, containing a special door that leads to extraordinary adventures…
Tickets for all the above shows from Worthing Theatres box office on 01903 206206 or online at www.worthingtheatres.co.uk.

12 Essential Care
Pimms, anyone? There’s always lots going on at The Shelley Residents at The Shelley, Worthing’s luxury residential care home certainly know how to have fun – whether it’s a simple lunch or shopping trip or a grand day out to a place of interest. Activities co-ordinators Jeanette Labec and Peter Arthur know that older folk have a much better quality of life, and even live longer, if they go on learning and embracing new experiences – and that’s exactly why they spend so much time planning and organising a delightfully varied programme, with something to appeal to everyone. “It’s all about getting out of your comfort zone and going for it,” says Jeanette. “The old saying ‘Use it, don’t lose it’ has never been more true.” With this firmly in mind, activities, trips and outings are organised every day throughout the year, and residents hold
regular meetings on the entertainment programme to decide where they want to go or what they want to do. But everyone is especially looking forward to the summer outings – with the chance to find new and exciting places to stop for tea and cakes and to enjoy a gorgeous view over the local countryside. “We’ve just been to one of our favourite places – Bakers House at Shipley,” says The Shelley’s owner Marlene Sanders. “It’s only open for two days a year, in May and June, as part of the National Gardens Scheme. We love it because it’s so elegant and charming – with a scented knot garden, a large lake and the most beautiful flowers, including a tunnel of laburnum and a fabulous display of roses. It’s the perfect place to while away a summer’s afternoon.”
Other exciting visits have included a visit to a trip to the famous Spinnaker Tower at Portsmouth’s Gunwharf Quay, where everyone went right to the top and stood on the glass floor. Scary? Not for the intrepid party from The Shelley! Closer to home, there’s a special tea party planned this summer in aid of St Barnabas Hospice. “We’ve booked some fantastic live entertainment from Richard, the handsome crooner we’ve nicknamed Mr Shiny Shoes. All our ladies love him!” says Marlene. “And we’re serving ‘proper’ tea – the full works, including cucumber sandwiches. Visitors are welcome, and we’re hoping to raise lots of money for this very important charity.”
Ex-chef Peter enjoys organising taster sessions, where residents can sample everything from smoked fish, cheeses, chocolates and ice creams to regional wines, ports and sherry. And everyone enjoys ‘Pimm’s o’clock’ on a sunny afternoon. “We all enjoy sipping a delicious cool glass of Pimm’s in our lovely garden – and this leads on to tea and homemade cakes later,” says Marlene. “We’re extremely civilised here at The Shelley!”

18 Essential Health
Avoid the big burn this summer course you’re aware of the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation on the skin, which can damage its immune response and increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Here are some useful safety tips for avoiding the big burn: In Britain at least, everyone perks up when the sun comes out. We all know sunlight is good for our general health and wellbeing, and makes us feel great. And because the summer so far has been a bit of a washout, many of us are packing our bags and jetting off to warmer climes in search of that elusive sun. It’s fun to sunbathe – but the risks are considerable, and well documented. Skin that’s exposed to the sun in an excessive way can become permanently damaged and prematurely aged. And of
UK FOUNDATION
Samaritans is a registered charity. Supported by The Vodafone UK Foundation
• Apply a good sunscreen about 30 minutes before going out, even if the weather is overcast. Harmful rays can penetrate cloud cover. Don’t forget your lips, hands, ears and the back of your neck. Reapply frequently, especially if you’re swimming or doing any exercise that makes you sweat. • If you’re in a hot country take extra care between 11am and 4pm when the sun is at its strongest. Follow the example of the locals and take an indoor siesta.
Or visit us between 9am - 9pm at 2 Lennox Road, Worthing
• Wear protective clothing when you’re not swimming. Broad-brimmed hats, tightly woven fabrics and long sleeves may not sound particularly chic, but they’ll help keep the sun off your skin.
• Look for these ingredients in your sunscreen. Zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or avobenzone all help to block harmful UV rays.
Ouch! Haven’t followed the rules and are already burnt? • Apply a soothing compress, using witch hazel or cold tap water with a few ice cubes. • Drink lots of water. • Take ibuprofen or another anti-inflammatory. This will help to relieve the pain, itching and swelling of a mild to moderate burn. And don’t make the same mistake again! If you’ve been burnt, it takes three to six months for your skin to return to normal.
Essential Dr Sarah 19
Dr Sarah has the last word…
When I rule the world… I’ve just listened to yesterday’s File on 4 on Radio 4 as a Podcast – how modern am I? They’ve been discussing reform of the provision of Emergency care in the NHS. Take cover – I feel a rant coming on. Of course, I’m lucky enough to have you, patient reader, to bear the brunt of my rant – so, thank you in advance. Why is it that those involved in ‘reorganisation’, ‘restructuring’, or ‘reconfiguration’ in positions of power and influence are so full of management jargon and trite platitudinous claptrap that one is never quite sure if they have answered the question
at all? Those who work to make changes to specialist areas all too often have limited experience of those systems. The basic problem goes something like this. Emergency Departments are busy. A lot of the time we’re busy with stuff that isn’t an Emergency. Many patients do not need to come to hospital at all and could conceivably have their ‘health needs’ met in the community by another healthcare professional. So – there’s your GP, the outof-hours GP service, the out of hours walk-in service, the Minor Injuries Unit, The Urgent Care Centre, Paramedic Emergency
If I were given a similar baffling choice of repair outlets for my car, I’d make mistakes too – mostly on account of not being a mechanic. How do I know whether it’s the gasket or the carburettor or the alternator? All I know is that it’s not working, it’s under the bonnet and I’m scared to look in case it blows up! Everyone’s problem is some sort of emergency for them. It is our job to triage, not theirs. We have to bite the bullet, accept that people are confused by too much choice, and make things simple. Accept that, whether we like it or not,
where they will be triaged by experienced medical staff and advised of the appropriate service provider to help them, all under the same roof. There should be a sliding scale of waiting time targets, dependant on clinical need. When I rule the world, gone will be the 2am haemorrhoids, the 3 week old sprained ankle, the legions of clearly well folk who thought they’d better just ‘get it checked out’. I will be where I like it best, up to my elbows in guts and claret, feeling as though I’ve made a difference and am part of a system that works, for me,
Care Practitioners, Community nurses, and last – but most definitely not least – your trusty Emergency Department. Lovely. Everyone clear where they need to go? No, of course you’re not.
people will come to A&E at four in the morning with a GP problem. So, provide a GP. Keep local GPs busy during the day but patients should also be able to attend hospital
