“We held our first fireworks and bonfire event in Shoreham last year. You never quite know if you’ve publicised it enough or if you’ve got it right, but seeing all those people flooding on to the beach that evening was the best feeling. It’s a family event, an early and a safe one. There are certainly no flaming torches! Historically, bonfire societies were run by criminal gangs and expressed anti-Catholic sentiment. We’re about re-claiming bonfire night as a community event. Shoreham is a good place to do this because it’s a very special place with nice people and an active community. At the moment, it’s just me and a friend, Stuart Lanham, at the helm. But at our last meeting at The Bridge pub in Shoreham, around 16 people turned up. There’s no paid membership and we’d love more people to join in. An event like this takes a lot of planning. We get the police and fire brigade involved and attend countless council meetings. And just when you think you’re done, there’s something else to consider. I’m not complaining though, as this makes it one of the safest bonfires around. We don’t get paid by anyone except the community who donate. In the first year we managed to cover ourselves, but fundraising is critical. If the community doesn’t pay for it then I pay for it!” The Shoreham beach family bonfire and fireworks, Beach Green, Saturday November 12, 6.15pm.

You may have noticed something a bit different about The Brunswick in Thorn Road, Worthing. This former sports bar and music venue has been given a complete make over by husband and wife team Fiona Driscoll and Suresh Hiremath, and a new name – The Bay.
“We’ve made it more traditional,” says Fiona, who recently moved to Worthing and decided to “rescue, renovate and reinvigorate” their local pub to create The Bay. “We’ve restored the original Victorian panelling and turned the sports bar into a restaurant. We also have rooms now so that people can stay.” “It’s a beautiful old building in a super spot just off the seafront”, says Suresh. “We wanted to make it a welcoming venue with a traditional pub, stylish bar and relaxed restaurant serving fresh best of British food, and a cosy B&B.” The food may be traditional and British, but, as Fiona says, “it’s not so
much what we cook, as how we cook it”. They are known for their 13oz pies, the pastry for which is all hand-made on the premises. In fact, everything is hand-made, right down to the tartare sauce. They source their produce from a mixture of local suppliers, and Fiona says their head chef Matt Smith often catches fish for the restaurant. “We always try to offer mussels, prawns, whitebait or calamari, but a lot of what we do depends on what’s fresh in the market at the time.” The Bay pub, kitchen and B&B, Thorn Road, Worthing, 01903 202141 www.thebayworthing.com

Winner of the Splash Award for Best Restaurant 2010
Riverford Organics deliver organic fruit, vegetables, meat boxes and other organic groceries from their four farms free to your door. The company recently won an RSPCA Good Business Award for Best Independent Retailer in the food category at a swanky awards ceremony held at London’s One Marylebone. The RSPCA awards recognise food and fashion businesses who are going the extra mile for animal welfare. We caught up with Michelle Smith, the Riverford distributor for the Worthing area. “We’re thrilled to have won this award as it highlights the lengths we go to ensure that the meat, milk and eggs we sell are as ethically produced as the veg we grow,” she says. Riverford have a network of small artisan farms within the UK, and they are accredited by the Soil Association. “We want to make it as simple as possible for people to buy good food that’s ethically produced,” says Michellle. Don’t forget to order your Christmas hampers - from mince pies and sloe gin to brussel sprouts and turkey, Riverford has everything you need for the festive season.

The awards were judged by the editors of two leading kitchen and lifestyle magazines, Beautiful Kitchens and Designer, and hosted by Family Fortunes star Vernon Kay. Jason’s kitchen was praised for its clever use of space, colour and layout. “It’s a great feeling to have won this award,” says Jason. “I’ve been designing for 21 years so it’s fantastic to be recognised. And the fact that it was adjudicated by magazines which place a great emphasis on design makes it extra special.” Designed for a family in Roedean, Jason’s brief was to create a stunning open-plan kitchen and family room to integrate food preparation, casual dining, entertaining and leisure. The client also wanted to experiment with different heights to give the kitchen more definition. “The customer selected the unusual blackberry glass doors,” says Jason. “I contrasted this with matt white lacquered furniture and glacier white Corian worktops, which also sets off the appliances nicely.” So, what are Jason’s tips for brilliant kitchen design? “Keep it user-friendly and functional, and think about the ergonomic triangle
of cooker, sink and fridge, for ease of movement. Try to incorporate some living space, as this is important these days, but above all, create a place people will feel happy being in.” Colliers is a family run business based in Teville Road, Worthing. It has been installing fine kitchens for fifty years through four family generations. It can project manage from start to finish or work with customers’ preferred installers, working to the high standards expected by Neff. The white Corian worktops create a neat streamlined effect. On the far wall is the glass-fronted shutter unit set into the old chimney recess, which is an ideal place to house things such as toasters and kettles.

Building the matt white storage units either side of the American fridge freezer detracts from the bulkiness of the appliance. The illuminated shelves set on the white lacquered panels are an eye catching feature which you see as you enter the kitchen.
This is the island from the prep side. A small compact wine fridge is housed in the side of the island and there’s a pop-up socket in the centre which is useful for any electrical items used on the island top.

Providing a home from home Being a host with Barking Mad means you provide a ‘home from home’ for dogs when their owners go on holiday, which prevents them going to a kennels. Ruth Wilkinson, from Midhurst, has been doing this for three years. “I used to have a Westie called Mack,” says Ruth. “But as I’m on my own now I don’t feel I can get another dog.” Ruth saw the advert for Barking Mad and thought it sounded like the perfect solution. “A representative from Barking Mad came to see my house and garden, and check that I was suitable. I’m a great dog lover so I think I passed the test!” Barking Mad provides the host with a list of all the dog’s likes and dislikes and a list of commands. The dogs also come with their own bedding and food. “When the dogs are here I give them my full attention and lots of cuddles, but no treats other than what they’re allowed normally,” she says. “I’ve never had a difficult dog. Of course some dogs take longer to settle in, but once you get to know them it’s fine.” The hosts don’t meet the owners. However, they do write a postcard to the owners at the end of each stay to let them know how their dog’s ‘holiday’ has been.

Weight loss - don’t sweat it
Getting fit needn’t be a hard slog. Do it the painless way with Body Shapers of Sussex
Angela Prodger in the Body Shapers studio
I’ve tried it! Before
Body Shapers of Sussex is a unique fitness experience which combines the camaraderie of Weight Watchers with nutritional advice and specialist gym equipment. It was founded by Angela Prodger, who for years battled with her own weight problems and wanted to help others achieve their weight loss goals in a supportive environment. “I was 10.5 stone and now I’m 8.5 stone. That might not seem very heavy but it’s not what you see on the scales it’s what you see in the mirror,” says Angela. “I had a total lack of confidence. And to achieve my target I had to work very hard. I didn’t have the kind of encouragement that my clients do.” Body Shapers has just opened a new premises in Manor Road, Lancing. The Shapemaster machines in their womenonly fitness studio are power assisted and based on Pilates movements to minimise impact on the joints. Compare this to most traditional gym equipment (a treadmill for example) which gives joints a good pounding, and this is a much gentler way to lose weight and tone up. “Some of my clients have MS, ME and asthma, and their lives have been greatly improved by the use of these machines,” says Angela. Each machine works a different muscle group and each client gets a tailor-made fitness regime to understand their personal goals. And, there are plenty of incentives to keep you on track like their 12 week ‘weight loss challenge’, which includes weekly classes, a weekly supportive email, weigh and measure, advice on nutrition, tips and hand-outs. In the garden: November
! S ID K R O F Y L L IA T N E S S E
Andrew Tomes from Bell Gardens Ltd in Worthing recommends some winter flowers to brighten these short days Pruning: You may think there’s not much to do in the garden this month, but November is a time for tidying, preparing for winter and planting trees and shrubs. Tender plants should be under cover, though we’re less prone to severe frosts in this part of the world, so a fleece may suffice. Hardy Fuchsias do seem to go on, but these can be pruned and mulched at the base, as with the herbaceous perennials, especially lilies. Apple trees can be pruned but do check whether it is a tip or spur bearer. Some say prune roses now, some say wait until spring. It depends on the type and when the plant is dormant. Leaves make great mulch once decomposed, though they do need to be wet to compost. Planting: Before the advent of garden centres and container grown plants, October to March was the planting season. Gardens would be constructed in the summer with the borders dug and left. Nurseries grew their stock in the ground, slicing the roots with a spade each year so that when the plant was eventually lifted, the ball contained fibrous roots. This is still the best time to plant, especially bare root and root balled trees, shrubs and hedging, and it’s a cheaper way to purchase. Perfume: This season boasts some often overlooked great flowering and scented specimens. We can easily miss the abundance of Camellia (Winter’s Joy), which can withstand temperatures Mahonia
down to -15°C. And the evergreen Viburnum tinus, with its pretty white flowers, is everywhere. Mahonia is an elegant architectural shrub with heavily-scented yellow flowers, and the compact Sarcococca hookeriana var. dygna (Christmas box), which grows in shade, has delicate white perfumed flowers. Of course the winter heather varieties of Erica carnea which grows on chalky soils and a cherry, Prunus subhirtella Autumnalis, are also flowering now. The evergreen plant Elaeagnus ebbingei has little going for it except as a maritime wind break and
screen most of the year. However, the winter flowers are like miniature Chinese lanterns, which when crushed, have a fragrance to beat any more ostentatious bloom. Funky facts Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot! • Food for bonfire night has to be hot and you have to be able to eat it outside! Soup, jacket potatoes and sausages are all great warming bonfire night food. • The Lily Fireworks Factory in Malta holds the record for the largest Catherine wheel. They built a wheel in June this year which measured just over 32 metres (about the size of a small fun-fair wheel). • A dazzling 66,326 fireworks were needed to create the world’s largest fireworks display in Portugal in December 2006. • The word ‘bonfire’ is thought to come from the Celtic custom of burning the bones of the cattle which were slaughtered at this time of year - a ‘bone fire’. • Our celebrations on November 5th are about Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder plot. But the word ‘guy’ used to mean a dummy or effigy. After the Gunpowder Plot, the guy on the bonfire came to mean Guy Fawkes. • Immediately before his execution, Fawkes jumped from the scaffold where he was to be hanged and broke his neck to avoid being dealt with by the hangman.

You don’t have to go to church to find religion anymore, just head into the centre of Worthing on a Friday or Saturday night
We all know that town centres can be dangerous places at night, but if things go wrong, the last thing we expect to see is a uniformed officer coming towards us with a prayer book. However, for the last two years in Worthing this is exactly what’s been happening. Street Pastors is an international movement of people who care for the cold, lost, lonely and vulnerable out on the town at night, whatever the weather. It’s run by the Ascension Trust, an organisation which helps Christians work effectively within their local communities, and has grown from just one project in London to 150 locations around the UK. The Reverend Ginny Cassell, along with her husband Mick and a friend, Tony Jackson, helped launch the initiative in Worthing, and it has been so successful that what started on Friday nights has expanded to Saturday nights too. “We felt it was time for the church to be doing not just talking” says Ginny. “We’re not trying to do anyone else’s job but we fill the gaps where the police and door staff don’t have the time.” On a typical Friday or Saturday night, Ginny, Mick and the team turn up at the Salvation Army on Crescent Road in Worthing at about 9.30pm, get their uniforms on, and head out. They work in pairs and stay in constant phone contact with the prayer pastors who remain at the base. They are also linked to the pub watch radio, so that they can hear conversations between door staff and taxi marshals. “We walk around the pubs and clubs” says Ginny, “chatting to the door staff and telling them to call us if they need us. We’re quite well known, and the police are happy we’re there. “We look for vulnerable people; a woman on her own, someone young or very drunk, someone who’s run out of money and can’t get home, or people without sufficient clothing.” St George’s Church

The Victoria Royal Beach is a family-run residential care home in Worthing, offering accommodation to 20 residents. It has been recently taken over by Tony, Paul and Deborah and is managed by Coral Jackson. It provides a home from home environment for people who need permanent or respite care.
“Life will never be the same for us since we bought the Victoria Royal Beach in May this year,” says Paul. “The first moment we walked through the door we felt at home, and since then we have been working hard to improve this already highly respected care home and ensuring that the transition goes smoothly.” Their team of qualified and friendly staff make sure that every aspect of care is supplied at a level required for each individual, allowing for independence and dignity. “Life here is happy and relaxed,” says Paul. “All the staff care for the
residents as if they were their own loved ones.” All rooms are decorated to a high standard and many have ensuite facilities. Rooms on the first floor have a private balcony with a side sea view. In addition to regular in-house organised activities, they have a visiting activities organiser who arranges arts and crafts, flower arranging and quizzes. An entertainer attends on a regular basis for an old time sing-along. Meals are served in the conservatory after a predinner aperitif or if desired, they can be served in residents rooms.
Victoria Royal Beach RESIDENTIAL CARE HOME
The pastors carry water, a phone, foil blankets, flip flops (for people who can’t walk in their high heels), and a first aid kit. They will also call the emergency services if necessary. “The most difficult experience is when there is nothing you can do to help,” says Ginny. “If someone has a harrowing story or relationship issues you can only listen. Lots of people go out because they’re upset. We ask if it’s ok to pray for them in that situation.”
At 4am the last club in Worthing closes, and at around 4.30 in the morning the pastors finally head home. “We meet some really lovely people” says Ginny. “Even if they’re being sick at the time, we’ve all been there and done that!” If you’d like to volunteer to be a street pastor please email: worthing@ streetpastors.org.uk or for more details see www. streetpastors.co.uk

One year on for Wraysbury House
Local pedal power helps charity
Alice Bock and team look back at a busy year in the care home, filled with fetes, promotions and rescue cats
Three local lads are riding the South Downs Way for The Teenage Cancer Trust this month, they tell us about their challenge
At Wraysbury House we have a lot to celebrate. Shortly it will be our first anniversary - how time flies! It has been a busy and challenging year - taking in our first residents, recruiting and training our staff and settling into the delightful home that Wraysbury has become. Our residents enjoy wonderful surroundings and a varied activity programme. During the year we have held two fund raising fetes - our residents’ families have been very generous! We have taken in two rescue cats - Mongo and Midge, who have settled into the home as if they have been there for ever and are a great success with our residents. I have been promoted to manager; Nikki has been promoted to deputy, and not to forget Carole and Daniel who are our seniors - phew! I wonder what next year will bring? We are all proud to work for Wraysbury. It is a truly family-run home and a caring and professional team, with great emphasis
Every day six young people from across the UK between the ages of 13 and 24 are diagnosed with cancer. Usually placed on a children’s ward or with elderly patients, young people often feel extremely isolated when facing a cancer diagnosis. Mark Price, Darren Ford and Darren Crabb were attending a networking evening for the Best of Worthing and the Teenage Cancer Trust was present there. “They asked if we would do some form of fund raising for them, and we said yes,” says Darren Crabb. “I had just been given the all clear that morning following heart surgery in December last year and Darren Ford suggested we do the South Downs Way in the near future on bikes so we agreed there and then.” The Teenage Cancer Trust is raising funds for the south east appeal. This is for the construction of a specialist unit at The Royal Marsden hospital in Sutton, Surrey. Mark, Darren Ford and Darren Crabb will be cycling the South Downs Way on the 12th and 13th of November. A hundred-mile trail between Winchester and Eastbourne, this beautiful countryside route includes about 10,000ft (3,000m) of climb and should take around two to three days to complete. The team hopes to raise awareness of teenage cancer and to help as many young people as possible. They have a target of £5,000 – please see www.justgiving.com/southcycle for more details and to donate.

Gone phishing Claire Love, MD of LWS Creative, reveals how easy it can be to get stung by an internet scam
“Bad blog going around about you. Have you read it yet? tikk.in/1TR” Many Twitter users received this message recently and, succumbing to their curiosity, may even have followed the link. If that was you, you’ll know by now that it was all a scam. Having got you to log into your account, it then sent the same message to all your followers. Possibly not the most outrageous trick, but it demonstrates how scammers operate by playing on our innate human sensitivities and curiosity. Earlier this year, millions of Tweeters got this message: “I have spent 11.6 hours on Twitter. How much have you? Find out here.” 10,000 clicked the link and discovered no such thing. What they actually did was permit the scam to post the same Tweet in their name. This scam lured people to a survey page which paid out per visit. More dangerous still are phishing scams that persuade people to part with their personal and financial details – where you are directed to web pages that look nearly identical to a legitimate company’s website and then share passwords or credit card numbers. Meanwhile, on Facebook there’s the recurring ‘dislike button’, ‘stalker tracker’, ‘OMG! watch this’ videos and many more. Anti-phishing software is one defence. The other, much less expensive, option is good-ol’ commonsense. Tweeters cannot direct message you if they don’t follow you and visa versa. Doesn’t sound like the sort of message that a follower or friend would send? Link doesn’t take you to the promised page or takes ages to upload? Unexpectedly asks you to enter your login information? Ignore the lot. And click nothing. But if you didn’t and you did - get out of there quick and change your password immediately. Strong policies and training in how to use social media for business success are both ways of avoiding the pitfalls of spam and phishing. the most difficult person to buy for. What do you get for the man who has everything? And when did ‘boys toys’ get so expensive and complicated? If it doesn’t boast an HD screen, multiple USB sockets or a picture of some bitten fruit, then it’s simply not worth the paper it’s wrapped up in. with maybe a portable black and white telly or a transistor radio for company. Well, my boyfriend’s office at home resembles mission control! In fact, Houston would be jealous of his set up. I’ve been in on occasions and found two lap tops and a PC fired up, the radio blaring and various other gadgets on charge bleeding the national grid (and our savings) dry! This is why Buddy is in our lives to bring back a touch of the ‘good old days’. Long crisp country walks with no gadgets, no beeps, no rings, no chimes and where the only apple will be a healthy snack! PAULA POOLE:

The facts, very simply, are as follows: n Look at your parents. It will give you a good idea of how you are likely to age. n Prevention is better than cure. Exposure to sun prematurely ages the skin and increases the risk of skin cancer. Use sunscreen and fake tan. And yes, you’ll need to exfoliate (add a bit of sand to swarfega - job done). n Stop smoking. Unless you want a mouth that looks like a dog’s bottom. n Moisturise. With anything. See notes below.
Go to any beauty counter and there’s a baffling array of grease to put on your face. The orange lady in a white coat is a salesperson not a scientist. She’s only scary because she doesn’t look real and she speaks a language you don’t understand. It’s called ‘nonsense’. We’d all love to buy an elixir to rejuvenate our saggy jowls, but it doesn’t exist. Do not be conned by the ads featuring flawless 12 year olds. They have not conquered the 5,7,10 (or however many there are this week) signs of ageing by using a fancy cream, they are just photoshopped teenagers. You looked like that once. The take-home message is this: any product that moisturises
the surface layers of the skin will plump it up and make it look less old and wrinkly. It doesn’t matter whether you spend £100 or £1. It’s all the same. So, do yourself a favour and save yourself some cash, Vaseline is the way forward! Dr Sarah trained in medicine at King’s College, London, and now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.

I thought I might put my soap-box away and lighten up this month. I shall reach for a subject in the ‘total trivia with only a tenuous link to medicine’ box. The tenuous link, and the only serious underlying message here, is my desire to root out charlatans and expose their unscrupulous lies. I’ve always wanted to be the kind of girl who cleanses, tones and moisturises, and always has dental floss and tooth-whitening gum in her Gucci clutch. Sadly, my beauty regime usually consists of a baby wipe and a tub of Swarfega, followed by a slick of some sort of grease. However, this doesn’t stop me from being concerned that my face is at risk of resembling a comfy leather armchair. So, I’ve selflessly conducted some serious research. There’s a lot of pseudoscience (guff) in the world of beauty/cosmetics. It’s mostly based upon the assumption that we will believe anything if it’s what we want to hear, irrespective of whether it has any basis in fact.
