Corrinne Wicks (Doctors/Emmerdale) talks to us about television, theatre and the importance of tea.

You have performed in both TV dramas and live theatre. Tell us what you love about each? In the theatre, I love the immediate response of the audience and how, as I step onto the stage, I enter another world. With television, everything is done very quickly with little rehearsal time. This makes for an exciting experience! In both, the teamwork is what makes it special. We all contribute to the performance and when it begins, all are focussed and in the moment. Oscar Wilde is definitely on my list of favourite playwrights. Who would you put on yours? Currently, Alan Ayckbourn heads my list. I’ve recently seen some fantastic productions of Relatively Speaking and A Woman in Mind. His writing is beautifully crafted and funny. What is the one item you can’t live without on tour? A kettle! I am a total tea addict and particularly partial to Earl Grey with a little milk. I find tea so warm and comforting. With the current weather, I would also add an umbrella. Can you describe your perfect day? My perfect day is relaxing with tea and the telly – preferably on my bed. I would begin with the antiques programmes, followed by something light like Murder She Wrote, which is guaranteed to send me off for a little kip. In the evening, nothing beats a good film and a take-away meal. Tell us what you love about Worthing I love Worthing theatres with their amazing history. Harold Pinter performed here. I also love the sedate, romantic seaside feel: deckchairs, fish and chips and, of course, a hot cup of tea! Corrinne Wicks will be appearing in The Importance of Being Earnest from Tuesday 13 to Saturday 17 November at the Connaught Theatre.

You may have stumbled across an exciting new market in Worthing in the last few months in the gorgeous venue of St Pauls. Bartie’s Boutique is a contemporary market held on the second Saturday of every month and features 25 plus different stall including local craftspeople, artists and small businesses all under one roof. We had a chance to chat to Rachel, who organizes the events – she said ‘what’s great about the boutique is how much local talent is here in Worthing, it gives people a chance to shop for something different, and at the same time grab a coffee in one of the towns most historic venues’. The team behind Bartie’s, also organize markets in collaboration with some of the towns most loved and established events such as The Artists Open House Network and the International Birdman Competition, to bring exciting new talent to the public and provide an opportunity for small businesses to sell without the overheads of a shop. The Boutique is a not for profit event and so far have donated over £1400 this year to Cancer Research this year. If you fancy a different shopping experience, or are looking for something locally or hand made Bartie’s Boutique is on from 10 – 4 at St Pauls, Chapel Road, Worthing. Next dates are October 13th and November the 10th If you’d like to sell at Bartie’s Boutique or have any enquiries you can email mail@bartie.co.uk or visit their website at www.bartiesboutique.co.uk To check out other events that Bartie’s organizes visit www.bartiepresents.co.uk

Shakatak Saturday 6 October, 7.30pm OEP Live are pleased to announce that Shakatak will be performing in Worthing. This is the man that brought a seafood stall to Worthing seafront Jane Hicks catches up with Mr Seafood himself Martin Roberts

One of the things that has been sadly missing from Worthing’s seafront is a seafood stall. But, since April of this year, all that has changed with the arrival of Mr Seafood. Martin Roberts, alias Mr Seafood (his initials spell the Mr part of the name!), moved to Worthing from Essex, home of the Thames docklands and Billingsgate Fish Market in East London, where seafood is a natural part of the local diet. He was therefore shocked to find that in a seaside town like Worthing, there wasn’t a seafood stall along the prom somewhere. So, he enquired about setting one up and found the Worthing Town Council very helpful, offering him a site between The Lido and Worthing Pier and even giving him free advertising. Martin then had to find a suitable van that could be converted for his purposes which he fitted out himself, installing hot and cold running water and electricity to run his freezer and fridge. Having sat in the van to talk with him, I can tell you that everything is pristine and clean and surprisingly ‘un’ smelly! Food Hygiene and Environmental Health certificates on display inside the van confirm that he is also fully qualified and insured. To begin with, Martin was trading six days per week, but this kind of business is weather dependent. When the weather is good, business is brisk. Remember what the weather was like between April and July? Who wants to go along the seafront in driving rain or a howling gale? With a young family to support, Martin found himself having to do driving part-time to make up for the shortfall, reducing his opening hours to Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11am-6pm.

I was amazed at the variety of shellfish there were - cockles, mussels, winkles, prawns, oysters, whelks, crayfish tails, jellied eels, rollmops and a whole lot more. Martin told me he buys good quality fish for the best taste from Billingsgate and from Barney’s in East London for the best taste and quality of jellied eels. He also sells hot and cold drinks. It was a beautiful day when I visited Mr Seafood and business was brisk from the moment he opened. It was interesting to watch who came to buy. Nearly all the customers ate on the spot. One lady said, ‘About time too - just what Worthing needed!’ Martin hopes it may encourage tourism. He told me people also buy from him for a special tea or dinner party and he is gradually building up a customer base with returning people. And on Friday evenings you will find him on a pub crawl – not drinking, but selling his wares! – at The Selden Arms, The Swan, Broadwater Working Men’s Club and West Worthing Working Men’s Club. I took a punnet of prawns and jellied eels away with me and can tell you, they were delicious – vastly superior to anything I’ve ever bought from a supermarket. Why not check them out for yourself ? You won’t be disappointed.

The Steakhouse Bar and Grill

Our wine expert Richard Ambridge recommends lovely reds for October

Tasty Tipples for the Autumn

As the nights are drawing in the winter coats being readied & the central heating put on,we turn our thoughts to ‘winter warmers’.In the countryside the leaves are changing colour and game becomes the order of the day for that special occasion. Perhaps we are not yet ready for the warming winter casseroles and stews but game, whether it be Duck, Pheasant, Grouse, or their counterparts can make for an excellent, hearty and warming main course dish. To accompany these autumnal delights tradition suggests a warming and robust Rhone, a velvety rich Pinot Noir,or even a top quality Pomerol or Saint Emilion. The latter are ‘heady’ wines both in style & price and so the Rhone we can turn to for value. However the world famous Chateauneuf du Pape is often pricey especially if you are looking for domaine bottled wines which need maturity to drink at their best.Too often nowadays a cheap Chateauneuf du Pape probably means a young and inferior wine bottled by a negociant who buys in the youngest of grapes from a selection of growers - and in reality can often be a glorified Cotes du Rhone ! Even here the style of Cotes du Rhone has changed much over the years. It is becoming harder to find old fashioned robust and good value reds from this area.Again beware the cheap light alternatives. These latter wines are light, fun party wines and can often disappoint when being enjoyed with food. Search out the domaine/estate bottled wines from famed producers steeped in the history of the region - this is where your local wine merchant is invaluable for advice and knowledge.

We asked six Essentially Worthing readers what is it they love about living and working in Worthing.

Lesley-Anne Sammons Piano Accompanist & Vocal Coach Having moved to Worthing from Brighton, I revel in the real sense of calm that Worthing offers, along with the wonderful access to the sea and seafront, and the eclectic mix of shops which can be found in the smaller shopping areas dotted around the town, such as Broadwater, Goring and Findon. Nothing can be nicer than spending an afternoon browsing at leisure away from the frenetic activity of the larger malls.

Lewis Crathern Former 4X British Kitesurfing Champion My favourite thing about Worthing is the weather. Our town is the Kitesurfing Capital of England due to its consistent South Westerly breezes and this is the reason why I make it my base. Everyone likes to complain about the weather but we are lucky to experience four very different seasons which keep life exciting. The gales that batter the town provide some of the most challenging wind conditions in the world.

Sharon Clarke Worthing Town Centre Manager Worthing has so much that I love but its seaside location makes it a very special place to live. With fantastic shops, bars and restaurants just a stone’s throw away from the beach, Worthing has something for everyone. Sitting with a coffee on Worthing Pier and then strolling to the shops makes for a great day out – you can’t beat shopping by the sea in Sunny Worthing.

Peter Bennett President of The Worthing & Adur Chamber of Commerce The smell of turf on Cissbury Ring, the noise of the sea breaking gently on the shingle, the silver shining sea as seen from Highdown stretching from the Isle of Wight to Beachy Head, the incomparable hunched 1930’s shape of the pier, the promenade from Splash Point to the old fish market and medieval Tarring – plus the best sunshine in the UK.

Melanie Peters Sales Director - Best Of Worthing For me, the best thing about Worthing is the thriving business community. The variety amongst the businesses that operate in the town mean that there are ample business to business opportunities for trading within Worthing and our networking events help people connect with others. It is always a pleasure to see local companies do well and Worthing should be proud of its’ vibrant and enthusiastic commercial offering.

Stefan Sykes Owner, Coast Cafe I like many things about the town; the hidden delicious eateries, the open beach at sunrise, the quirky architecture and history. But with a background in spatial regeneration, Worthing’s geography is my Best Thing. It has a voluptuous beach, is tucked in close to the Downs and is close enough to Brighton’s madness for you to visit and escape. It’s also lovely and flat, so you’d be crazy to get about without a bike...

Business Bites This month Helen Scott talks empty shops, business awards and start ups

Christmas is Calling... Welcome to October’s Business Bites. As I write, it is now officially autumn and Christmas is just around the corner. The earliest clarion cry I heard for Christmas was in July, which must be a record! When did you first hear mention of Christmas 2012? How many shopping days are left? Answers on a postcard please....! Talking of the festive season - the national press reported this week that retailers, hopeful of a spending boom at the Olympics, (which did not happen because we were all glued to the TV!), are now focussing their energies on the Christmas trade. Interestingly on-line sales were not as high in the summer as expected, with customers choosing to shop on the high street instead. If this trend continues for Christmas, this could be good news for Worthing. ‘Pop Ups’ in Empty Shops So we need to look at our high street... You will have noticed that there are quite a few empty shops in Worthing or shops that are about to cease trading. I am ever hopeful that they may turn into exciting business ventures, like the new art gallery in The Royal Arcade. However they often remain empty when what we need

are fresh new national or independent retailers, to entice Worthingites and visitors to the town. In turn this would stimulate the local economy – hooray! So what can we do to support our town centre and get it fully open for business? One scheme that is proving very popular is the Empty Shops Network: www.emptyshops. wordpress.com/. The idea is to help people to reduce, reuse and recycle empty shops and other spaces in their towns and cities. This has already happened in our area with the pop up Tourist Information Centre for Worthing Borough Council, and the Ministry of Littlehampton project with local schools. Perhaps Worthing should look to do more of this? What do you think we should do to encourage more retailers and shoppers to our high street? Business Award Ceremonies It is ‘business award ceremony season’ – a great opportunity to promote and celebrate business success across Worthing and Sussex. A new event this year is the ‘Woman of the Year’ Award supported by The Body Shop and Mumpreneurs Networking Club – lots of great categories, sponsors, and most importantly, successful

business women to nominate. There is plenty of inspiration here for budding female entrepreneurs. Find out more at: www.jpsouthevents. co.uk/?event=woman-of-theyear. Grant of the Month The focus this month is on startup businesses – hot off the press is the new government loan scheme for 18-24 year olds to support their new and exciting ventures. Average loans are for £2,500. Providing a lifeline for families

Abi gave up a great career so that she could look after her son, Matthew. He has a very complicated and severe condition where he cannot move or eat independently and is visually impaired. Providing the full-time attention Matthew needs is exhausting and the nursery provides Abi with a little time to relax and recharge her batteries. With the expert service available, she has no concerns with leaving him knowing his individual needs are being met in ‘a secure and safe environment.’ The centre is staffed with an excellent support team, who are often supplemented by physiotherapy and speech therapists, which Abi says often saves her making additional visits to medical centres. She is particularly delighted with the special sensory rooms. For Matthew, this means a calm environment where he can be stimulated without the usual noisy play-school bustle that often triggers his seizures. The coffee lounge that is set aside for parents has helped her forge friendships and to keep up with the latest literature.Abi is full of praise for the centre and says, ‘We’d like to thank all the staff at Camelia Botnar for looking after Matthew so well. They are a lifeline for us.’ This amazing service depends on your generosity. But at Camelia Botnor, they believe that giving should be as enjoyable as receiving. They host numerous fundraising events including the upcoming Spooktacular Family Fun Day on Tuesday 30 October. Why not join them and have a great family day out and help provide a lifeline to others?

What are the biggest challenges working in Air Traffic Management ? Meeting the diverse needs of a diverse group of stakeholders who use the airfield and keeping up with the ever changing European Rulings.

WORTHING PRIVATE HIRE

What made you decide to become an Air Traffic Controller ? Because I have always loved aircraft and wanted the opportunity to be part of aviation. I also like a challenge! How long is the training before qualifying ? It takes around 10 months to train up at a college and then validate your most basic license at an airfield. After that it is a lifetime of learning and examination processes as you gain more qualifications, work at different airports, and complete annual CAA competency checkouts. Your proudest moments ? Marrying my husband, Mike, and then bringing our two lovely kids, Deborah and Ivan, home. Who is your hero ? Bishop Desmond Tutu due to his great faith, wisdom, and incredible capacity for forgiveness.

Make no mistake options are available to fund your care needs John Kelly, Partner at CareSure calls on Sussex public to explore all methods of funding for care There are approximately 130,000 people going into care each year throughout the UK. With 53,000 of those self-funding, remarkably just 10 per cent sought financial advice and guidance. It is vital that those who find themselves in the position of funding for either their own care or that of a family member has carefully considered which option is best for them; because they do have choices. There are six ways to pay for care: The deferred payment scheme; renting out your property; equity release;

using cash; investments; and buying a lifetime income. However, we are shocked at the number of people we come across who remain oblivious to these options. Sadly there are many people who still believe they can simply reply on the state to fund their care requirements and this lack of understanding can leave elderly people financially vulnerable. At CareSure we will guide the client through the decision-making process making sure the reminder of their lives is comforted

Tucking into Autumn at the Shelley Scrumptious seasonal soups and pies

It may be the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, but residents at the Shelley can look forward to an Autumn menu of gorgeous local produce. Our chefs will be hard at work in the kitchen, preparing a tantalising choice of seasonal fare at lunch and supper – with an excellent breakfast and all kinds of snacks on offer too. Nobody ever goes hungry at the Shelley, there’s so much to choose from – not only at mealtimes but right through the day. And if anyone fancies a three-course meal in

the middle if the night, that’s no problem either. Pumpkin soup, plum crumble, apple and blackberry pies are just some of the scrumptious dishes planned for the Shelley’s Autumn menu – and everything is always beautifully presented to tempt even the most delicate of appetites. There’s always plenty of choice on the Shelley menu, with a roast or curry for lunch, plenty of seasonal vegetables and a lighter option, often salad

or omelette. And there’s a choice of two cooked suppers or a sandwich, if preferred. There are fabulous desserts and cakes – a real temptation for our staff, who love popping into the kitchen for a taster. The Shelley truly is a special place – it’s like living in a hotel.

Dr Sarah has the last word Is life about what we can do and want to do rather than what we cannot do ? One sparkling day in early September I took 5 children to the Paralympics. I’m not generally much of a flag-waver, but I was unashamedly proud that, as a nation we had pulled off a superlative event. I had secretly feared we’d have crocheted a stadium out of old string and cobbled together an Olympic park from egg boxes, sticky-backed plastic and a washing up bottle. Ye of little faith! It was a spectacular, world-class show-case of outstanding slickness. I admit to feeling a little-patronisingly- ‘worthy’ at attending a Paralympic event. It would be a good educational experience in diversity for the children. Once sat in our seats right opposite the dairy milk coloured podiums all that melted away. The athletes ‘disabilities’ became entirely irrelevant. These were quite simply world-class sports people at the pinnacle of their game. I considered myself inclusive and broadminded, accepting of all difference, but truthfully without much real sense of connection. Listening to the stories of those who had become, rather than been born paralympians, I felt a closer connection. The gulf between ‘them’ and ‘us’ diminished. Any one of us could cross that line at any time. I began to feel more keenly the exclusion which is institutionalised and ingrained. Why don’t all buses lower to kerb level and have ramps? Why don’t all tube stations

have lifts and staff to help? Why aren’t shop doorways wider? Why aren’t ALL public buildings accessible to all? Why aren’t ALL new builds truly adapted? and why are most disability aids beige and ugly? Why is it ‘them’ and ‘us’? It’s not surprising that many disabled people feel undervalued, invisible and inconvenient. I’d be furious. I AM furious. When I worked on ITU, I felt compelled to sprint along the seafront before the morning ward round as a tribute to those who couldn’t and to fill my lungs with sea air lest one day I could not. I often joked that only a bilateral amputation would drive me into General Practice, such was my horror of sitting down

too much. Since I fell in love with Oscar Pistourius and his gorgeous blades and am genuinely less afraid. These athletes turned potential tragedy into a bright and inspiring future. I would like the legacy of these games to be not only that of inspiring a generation, but including a generation. It is clearer to me now more than ever that life is more about what you can and want to do, rather than what you can’t, irrespective of ability or disability. Dr Sarah trained in medicine at King’s College, London, and now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.

Exercise; endorphins matter. Go for a walk as a family, blow the cobwebs away. Get a scarf on and go!

Rethink your life Hoorah its Autumn It’s that time of year, Dr Who is time travelling and Downton Abbey is back. What can autumn mean to us though? It is darker, it is colder and it is relevant how for some, that changes everything. It is about how you see things. My eldest gets excited, it means autumn winter collections are back and she can wear chunky knits and coats. She sees this change as positive. So how can Autumn be less dark for you? Firstly, diet. Make sure you have balanced meals and small snacks every four hours including good carbs mixed with a protein. Your blood sugar levels are more stable if you do, so your mood swings are not about food.

Spend Halloween running round the neighbourhood without scaring people, go to a local celebration and walk there. Instead of the TV as a first option, spend time with people and family, play games, laugh, share. Watch your alcohol intake as it is a depressant and will bring you down. Also watch the tea and coffee that keeps you warm, caffeine is a stress stimulant and that irritability you think is your bosses fault, may be that 4th cup of coffee by 10am! Look at each scenario that brings you down and ask what can I see or do here to nurture myself too? A dawn sensor alarm clock can be a nice touch, waking to light without screaming “I can’t see” as someone turns the light on! Feels brighter inside and out. You could have Seasonal affective disorder if you usually become depressed only during this time. Go and see your G.P and a Therapist can help too. If you’re struggling with how you feel, how you cope, how you think or how you behave, contact me and ask the question -confidentiality is always assured.
