Melvyn Hayes is best known for his character Gunner ‘Gloria’ Beaumont in It Ain’t Half Hot Mum, but his long career has covered a number of successful roles in theatre, television and film. Here we get a chance to know him a little better Can you tell us about what first attracted you to the acting profession? Was there a particular person who inspired you? I was inspired by Al Jolson, labelled ‘The World’s Greatest Entertainer’. I watched the film, The Jolson Story, and realised then that acting was a life I would love. So, when my first work opportunity arose in a Christmas magic show Maskelyn’s Mysteries, I was eager to take it. My parents were too, since the advert for the part read, ‘Boy wanted to disappear twice daily’! You have worked in theatre, television and film. Which is your favourite and why? Whatever I am doing, that is my favourite, whether it is a one line voice-over or a significant part. Tell us about a memorable moment in your career. It was 1980 and It Ain’t Half Hot Mum was a successful sitcom on the BBC. I was performing in the pantomime Dick Whittington at the London Palladium with Windsor Davies when Eamonn Andrews came on stage and said, ‘This is your life.’ We all have a valued possession. What is yours? It would have to be my signed picture of Al Jolson. I wrote to America for it. Someone told me that these photos are seldom signed by the stars themselves, but I like to think that mine is genuine. You appeared as the Dame in the pantomime Sleeping Beauty in Worthing in 2006. Can you tell us what you like best about the town? I’ve performed in Worthing on many occasions and am particularly fond of the Connaught Theatre. Worthing, for me, typifies the British seaside resort. It is laid back, has great shopping and friendly people. It’s worth coming to Worthing! Melvyn will be starring in the poignant comedy drama You’re Only Young Twice from Tuesday 2 to Saturday 6 October at The Connaught Theatre, Worthing.

Something new for September Learn a language, dance for fun or join a Pilates class We’re all getting excited about the next season of Strictly Come Dancing, which is just around the corner. It’s easy to see how much fun dancing can be and great for fitness too! But don’t just leave it to the celebrities, why not come and try it for yourself. Lisa offers a variety of dance styles so you too can try your hand at such classics as cha cha, waltz and salsa. However, it doesn’t end there, you’ll be shaking those jazz hands, gliding across the floor like Fred Astaire and waving those arms around in Bhangra Bollywood fashion! There’s two different kinds of adult dance classes on offer, one more focused on learning how to dance, providing more steady exercise (Dance Class) and another for improving fitness (Dance Fit Class). You don’t need a partner as you learn in lines. Both daytime and evening classes are available in Worthing and other nearby areas and costs £5.50 per hour on a pay-as-you-go basis or save money by paying in advance. Lisa is also offering a Special Offer for all newcomers to class with this advert. You can get 2 classes for the price of 1. It’s a great time to come dancing!

We asked six Essentially Worthing readers what is it they love about living and working in Worthing.
Darren Crabb Dip PFS Partner St. James’s Place Partnership. Appeal Chairman Love Your Hospitals For me Worthing is all about the seafront, especially Goring, as I find it the most relaxing place that you can unwind after a stressful day. It is so easy to take the coast for granted but areas like Goring remind us that there are still open spaces in Worthing that aren’t developed or likely to change and when you look out to sea you realise how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place.
Eileen Suchodolski Visit Worthing Information Centre Manager Worthing is great on so many levels. From the sea to the Downs, from the variety of attractions and activities on offer, to our music events and arts. And, of course our new Visit Worthing Tourist Information office in the Dome which is here to help both visitors and residents. But more so than this it’s the Worthing people that stand out, those who make things happen; the volunteers and charity workers who give their time to support and are proud to contribute to something positive.
Andrea Pagliaro Director, The Burlington Worthing fills me with happiness and contentment. I’m privileged to see my daughter grow up in the fantastic atmosphere of Our Lady of Sion Junior School and also being able to live so close to my workplace, makes me feel that I am blessed with a really enjoyable work/life balance. I revel in our beach life and the soothing power of the sea air, and peaceful afternoons in Coast Cafe really fulfil my idea of happy days.
Karen Simporis BA Hons, MBAcC, TnISPEcert. Proprietor & Acupuncturist Henry House My best thing about Worthing is the army of volunteers and carers that support the elderly and disabled and that organise festivals & arts events to make Worthing special. Their commitment inspired me to help found the Worthing and Adur Fund, the Mayor’s chosen charity for this year, which gives grants to local groups and raises money to invest in the town’s future.
Bradley Lewis Worthing Football Club Youth Team Captain Worthing is a great place for sport and many local clubs have great opportunities for youth players. I made my debut with Worthing Football Club and Worthing Cricket Club aged 16 and now, at just 17, I am Under 18’s captain of both. I also enjoy golf and we have some great local courses from the Brooklands Par 3 to Hill Barn Golf Club, which both welcome young players.
Peter Latham Chief Executive, Adur District and Worthing Borough Council I like the enthusiasm and the ‘can do’ attitude of the townspeople in Worthing, both residents and businesses. Despite the often negative comments there is an undoubted positivity that really needs to be highlighted to quell those who frankly love to talk the town down. This positivity continues in Adur and the set of communities that were only brought together in 1974 now stand proudly under the Adur flag, whilst managing to maintain their own strong identities.

East Beach Café was the first project for local award winning architect EW food writer Jane Hicks liked the building design and loved the homemade apple pie and cream
When Jane Wood bought a house in South Terrace, Littlehampton, little did she know that she was soon to open her own specially commissioned, purpose-built café/restaurant on the beach. Jane soon discovered there were plans for the old kiosk on the beach in front of her house to become a 98-seater burger bar. She felt that this would have been a missed opportunity – that the unspoilt beach of Littlehampton deserved something better. So, she bought up the old kiosk and commissioned architect friend Thomas Heatherwick to design what is now the East Beach Café. Opened in 2007, the iconic building won a prestigious RIBA Award as well as an Engineering Construction Award and a Civic Trust Award. In fact, it has won 20 awards in total which, considering this was Thomas Heatherwick’s first building, is pretty good going. Heatherwick is now a world class designer! The futuristic appearance of the exterior belies a simple, functional interior seating 60, with room for more on the beach decking. East Beach Café is open seven days a week all year from 10am-5pm for tea, coffee and snacks. Lunch is served daily from 12-2pm and dinner from 6pm on Friday and Saturday evenings. As you would expect of a seaside café, there is an emphasis on fish and seafood although there is a good variety of other dishes as well. As well as a Specials Board, there is an A la carte menu with something for everyone. Fish & chips, Shepherds’ Pie or Burgers will please those with traditional tastes, whereas the gourmet and those seeking ‘something different’ can choose from the more adventurous dishes, such as Spiced Baby Octopus & Squid Stew or Mussel & Bacon Chowder. Vegetarians are also catered for, and there is a Children’s Menu. I went for lunch, choosing a main course of Rabbit & Mushroom Pappardelle with a Tarragon Cream Sauce. The meal was excellent – beautifully presented, very tasty and plenty of it. For dessert, I opted for Apple Pie and cream, it was absolute heaven. The pastry was as light as a feather and the apple nicely spiced. All in all, it was a pleasant experience and I would thoroughly recommend the food, but do book in advance – they were very busy the day I went. Prices are on the high side but then, it is a rather up-market café – well worth a visit

Come fly with me Welcome to our monthly column Come Fly With Me. We ask the people that work at Shoreham Airport what motivates them and what makes them proud to be working in the aviation industry. This month Essentially Worthing puts the questions to Jonathan Candelon a pilot with Flying Time.
What is the best thing about Shoreham Airport? The best thing about Shoreham (Brighton City) airport is the location. It offers brilliant flying weather for the courses that we organise and run from Shoreham. The prime position has brilliant access to uncontrolled airspace for general handling as well as the airways entry system for the more advanced flight training exercises. The airport is very well equipped with good instrument approaches enabling landings in poor visibility. What made you start running a flying school? Six years ago I started working for Flying Time as a flight instructor. I was then offered the opportunity to manage and grow the business by the founders Tony Realff and Richard Rust. I knew the school had huge potential and I shared the founders’ vision for its future. I wanted to make sure I was part of it. What’s most challenging about your job? In the last 3 years we have nearly tripled in size and Flying Time has had to evolved accordingly. The challenge is to enhance as we grow and to get it just right. This means getting the aircraft fleet sizes and staffing levels at the best balance. The preparation for this happens months before it is actually required. We have a great team and this is what makes our company. It is a huge challenge finding great people, but Flying Time have got the best in every sense. How long does the average pilot need to train for before qualifying? Are there many different schemes? From zero experience, it takes a full time student 12 to 14 months before they become a fully qualified commercial pilot. There are two major routes available to become a professional pilot: the modular and the integrated route. We offer them both. Our integrated course is called the Flight Deck Programme. This course takes the student all the way from no experience to commercial pilot. With the modular route, students can do the course on a per module basis taking breaks in between. This gives the
student more flexibility if they need to work or have other commitments. Your proudest moments ? The proudest moments are when our students successfully complete their training and gain employment with commercial airlines. It’s a great feeling because this is the ultimate goal of every student pilot and it is great for us to be a major part of this.
Who is your hero ? My grandfather is my hero. I have learned great things from him, in business as well as life.

Helen Scott is The Funding Mentor from Worthing and every month she will share with EW her tips and ideas to help our local businesses succeed
Welcome to Business Bites. My name is Helen Scott and every month I will be talking business. I am The Funding Mentor - I can help you find funding, write bids, draw up business and funding strategies AND mentor you to do all of these... I draw upon thirty years’ experience in the private, charity and public sectors and am always keen to share my knowledge and expertise with others. I am perhaps what you would call a bit of an entrepreneur...I have worked for myself for the past 10 years and recognise the importance of having a business that has relevance in the current business climate. The Olympics Legacy What a great story to start Business Bites. With London 2012 now over, and the Paralympics just beginning, what will be our legacy? How will we sustain our success? And whose responsibility is it? I would encourage government to see this as an opportunity to galvanise the country and implore the media to stop spinning negative stories to bring us all down again. The sports world must ensure that sport of any kind remains in the spotlight, not just football!

What is your business model? I had the privilege of seeing two Osprey in flight over the River Adur during the summer. These birds are often mistaken for large seagulls, but are actually on the scale of a large
eagle – a well known and impressive bird of prey. If your business model was a bird of prey, what would it be? Let me know. If you chose an Osprey, would that say that your business was too well-disguised but has great potential? It is important to know what your business model is so that you can market it to potential customers. Grant of the Month As the theme has been sport this month – here is a grant for all those sports enthusiasts, community groups, volunteers, interested in applying for funding. Sport England have ‘The Inspired Facilities Fund’ that could help you refurbish or upgrade your sports facility; or convert an existing building into a venue suitable for sport and accessible to the whole community. Funds available of between £20K-£50K. Closing date: 17 September 2012. What about the business world? What can we do to build on this success? In particular, what can we do in Worthing and its environs as business people to become even more successful and profitable? A colleague said to me the other day, that we need to ensure we maintain a ‘can do’ attitude. Absolutely, I don’t know about you, but the Olympics, and now the Paralympics, make me feel that if you set your mind to it, anything can happen. Can we translate this empowerment into our business lives? As Obama said – ‘yes we can.’ So dust down that business strategy, that mission statement, that funding bid you always meant to apply for and do it! At The Funding Mentor I shall be focussing on a legacy that seeks to empower those that I mentor so that they ‘can do.’ There’s no time like the present...

Splash joins the fundraising for Hospice Care Week Huge on-air auction planned for 12th October It has to be said....here at Splash FM, we’re never too far away from another big event! Over our (nearly) ten years on air, we’ve helped and supported a lot of charities around the area, but this October, we’re really pushing the boat out! Hospice Care Week runs from the 8th-14th October, and is an annual event highlighting the crucial work carried out by hospices around the UK. During that week, we’re going to be teaming up with our three sister stations across Sussex, and helping to raise funds (and awareness) for four of the county’s hospices, including Worthing’s very own St Barnabas House. Most hospice care is provided by charities, and they could not provide the care they do, without the support of local people and businesses. We have spent a lot of time with the team at St Barnabas over the last few months, finding out more about the work they do, and it will be a pleasure to fly the flag for them, and to shine a light on all the fantastic work that goes on. Raising90mm funds is a very 1important part12:00 of the event though, x 134mm.pdf 12/08/2010

It has to be
said, the list of auction items gets more exciting day by day, with more ‘money-can’t buy’ experiences being added all the time! We really hope you’ll get involved! To find out more about Hospice Care Week, keep listening to Splash FM over the coming weeks.

Dr Sarah has the last word Our current system for tackling addictions is not working. We need to treat rather than punish. Last Tuesday was a deeply depressing day. I spent most of the morning on CDU- the overnight short stay ward in A&E where we keep patients for short periods of treatment or observation. 6 out of the 9 beds were occupied by people admitted directly or indirectly due to drugs or alchohol. After being so utterly buoyed and lifted by the physical prowess and achievements of our Olympic athletes, here I was in the real world, full of people who, if they weren’t eating themselves to an early grave, were drinking themselves to it instead. I’ve worked in Emergency Medicine long enough to accept, almost without flinching, that a huge part of our workload will be due to addictions of various sorts. Every now and then it just gets to me. It gets to me because we can do very little to help. Because I know I’ll see the same sorry cases over and over and over again until I don’t see them any more. And then there’ll be someone else just like them, who’ll meet the same fate. Russell Brand may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but he made a documentary on Addiction and Recovery which makes very compelling viewing. He is an advocate of treatment by abstinence. Meaning no subsitutes. Why do we easily accept diabetes, asthma, hypertension and heart disease as ‘medical’
Worcester Accredited Installers
Oftec Registered & Gas Safe
problems and throw huge sums of money at their treatment, and so little at addiction? Addiction is seen much more as a moral and personal failing, a poor lifestyle choice and a reason to punish rather than treat. Drug addicts are instinctively repulsive and threatening. No other group of patients is treated so punitively. Of course the lines are blurred between health and the law. Most street drugs are illegal and crimes are often committed to obtain them. Whole underworld empires are built on trafficking, arms, prostitution etc and make for very murky and dangerous places to linger. Yet Brand powerfully promotes the successful treatment of addicts, not as some liberal, wishy-washy, love-and-peace utopia, but as a real and pragmatic way to tackle crime. Treat the addict and destroy the criminal. It makes sense. Sending a law-breaking
addict to treatment is not a ‘soft’, but a sensible option to achieve a lasting reduction in drug related damage, to individuals, families and society as a whole. The obstacle to progress is, as usual, money and the political will to change the approach. Until there is a politician brave enough to speak the truth about our illness of addiction and see that treating it will save money in the end, lives will be ruined and society damaged. Until such time it will remain the uphill battlefield of underfunded charities working hard against the odds to save a few of the lucky ones. Dr Sarah trained in medicine at King’s College, London, and now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.
