Right now, thousands of people are fleeing conflict and rebuilding their lives from nothing. They’ve lost their homes, their livelihoods, and many have lost loved ones. The crisis can feel overwhelming, but there is a simple way you can help a refugee neighbour today. By giving £4 in the enclosed coin holder, you could help supply a cooking stove, so that a refugee family can share a meal. The simple act of sitting down and eating together can offer real comfort, so if you can spare a few coins, please do share your blessings.
Please give £4 today to help supply a stove. Your kindness could help a refugee family cook a meal together. If you’ve already given a gift this

Take a moment to imagine that world, <Mrs Wilson>. Picture the millions of children like Deli – who appears on the envelope to this letter – their faces lit up with gorgeous smiles because at last they have enough to eat; their mothers no longer racked with anxiety over how to feed their children. And when Deli has a family of her own one day, they’ll be free from the scourge of hunger too. It’s an inspiring vision, I hope you’ll agree. So let’s make it a reality.
7 (Scotland).
Right now there are 200 million fewer hungry people across the planet than 25 years ago. Thanks to the incredible dedication of people like you, Deli won’t go to bed hungry tonight because her family now knows how to work their land and produce enough food. By answering our survey you can help make this true for everyone. Let me tell you the story of Deli’s mum, Monica, to show how the tried-and-tested methods you’ve been funding over the years have helped so many and – thanks to you – could help many more.

My name is Peter Nixon, and I am the Director of Land, Landscape and Nature. I am writing to you today to ask for your help on behalf of an old friend of mine and yours, too – the British coast. In the past you have shown your commitment to National Trust’s work through your longstanding membership which helped to protect the many unique treasures under our care and I send you my heartfelt thanks for that. Although you’re no longer a member, I thought you might be interested to hear of our vital work to protect and preserve the precious shoreline that’s kept our island safe for centuries. Maintaining the 775 miles of coast that we own is expensive but it is a wonderful gift we have the chance to give to future generations. May I ask you if you’d donate £XX or whatever you can afford, so that we at the National Trust can keep the coast healthy and beautiful – for you, and for future generations? Even a small gift could make a real and lasting difference to the coast we all love.
Our coastline is under constant threat Climate change, in particular, is directly causing rising sea levels and more intense weather, all of which is accelerating the rate of natural erosion and other changes to the coastline. Then there is what we call ‘coastal squeeze’, where wildlife and plants, caught between the rising waves and the hard borders of built development, are literally being squeezed out of their natural homes, with nowhere to go. Elsewhere, rapid erosion risks putting whole stretches of coastline out of reach for tens of thousands of people. I’m sure you agree with me that would be a huge loss for those of us who love nature.

Seals basking at Blakeney Point, Norfolk
I give the best foot massage. The coast is where we come when we need to relax, where we go to escape the stresses and strains of everyday life – when you simply need to feel the sand between your toes. Our challenge is to work with nature to keep the coast open for everyone – especially those who don’t live nearby, but who need the chance to experience nature in all its magnificence.
We are never going to stop coastal erosion, and it’s not our job to try. But we can carefully manage it to maintain access and nuture wildlife. On the Pembrokeshire Coast, we’re giving the cliffs, the dunes and the coastal landscape a helping hand, so that the coast restores itself – with a bit of guidance from our teams and supporters, of course.
I’m a successful midwife. As we stand at the coast, on the edge of the land, watching the waves reshape the shore, listening to the gulls as they screech overhead, we often feel a deep connection with nature. At Blakeney Point in Norfolk, the circle of life is laid out before us as thousands of seal pups are born every winter, in the unique saltmarsh, mudflats and sand dunes. It’s a landscape in constant flux.
With your help, we are able to nurture and care for this volatile stretch of coast, allowing it to develop naturally, but never to inadvertently hurt itself. Our investment in the seal breeding programme has seen births of pups rise to 2,426 last year – up from just 25 in 2001 – making Blakeney Point the largest seal colony in England.

YES, I WILL ACT NOW TO HELP SAVE CHILDREN LIKE NYANIAN
EVERY CHILD IS PRECIOUS Right now, in parts of East Africa, children are at risk from a brutal drought – in some countries both the spring and summer rains have failed. It’s already killed crops and livestock, leaving families and many children dangerously short of food. Every malnourished child is precious, and loving parents long to see their offspring grow up happy and well-fed. But Nyanian’s mum doesn’t even know if her daughters will survive.

When Nyanian arrived at our clinic, our experts could see that she was in obvious danger. As the nurse wrapped a measuring band around Nyanian’s painfully-thin upper arm, the result was instantly clear: she was in the red zone, severely malnourished. Her immune system was weak, leaving her at risk of disease and infection.
In cases of severe malnutrition, immediate treatment is crucial. Without the nourishment they need, babies like Nyanian can die. We knew we had to act fast and thanks to a supporter just like you, we did. Soon Nyanian was biting into one of our specially-formulated, nutritious food pouches, giving her the vitamins, minerals and other essentials which her tiny body was craving.

An unprecedented crisis – including the worst drought for 50 years – is threatening the lives of many East African children like 10-month old Nyanian. Severely malnourished, Nyanian and her twin sister were brought to our Akobo Clinic in South Sudan by her worried mother, who had watched her daughters grow weaker with hunger every day. But, if you act now, you have the power to save children like Nyanian and nurture them back to health with urgent food and medical care.

BLESMA: LIMBLESS VETERANS Warm DM Pack Letter & Outer
Dear <Mr Sample>, Early one morning in Normandy in June 1944, twenty-year-old Bill Sharples heard a loud bang, looked down and saw a shell had blown off his right leg. At the time he was a Troop Commander with the 20th Anti-Tank Regiment leading his men into France. Seven decades later and Bill’s got a lot to remember from a truly remarkable life. We’ll never forget those who were lost. Or those who survived.
<John Sample > <123 Sample Street> <Sampletow n> <SA1 1AS>
My name’s Barry Le Grys and I’m the new Chief Executive of Blesma, The Limbless Veterans. I’m writing to you today, at this time of national remembrance, to share more of Bill Sharples’ story and also to ask for your help. There are 4,000 limbless veterans alive in the country today and with your generosity I’m determined to give them all the support they need. But let’s start with Bill’s story.
Frankland Moo 185-187 Hig re House Chadwell Heah Road th, Essex RM6 6NA T: 020 8590 1124 F: 020 8599 2932 E: chadwellhe ath@blesma. org www.blesma .org
These days, at the age of 90, Bill lives in the Blesma home in Blackpool. It’s a place that’s like no other, where we offer limbless veterans the specialist care they need to live out their lives with the dignity and independence they deserve. It’s one of the ways we honour those who gave their lives: by caring for those who survived. But since we get no Government funding, we rely on the kind hearts of people like you to keep on supporting our residents.
Caring for our act of survivors is remembra nce.

Bill moved to Blackpool earlier this year. “The home is just fantastic,” he told me. “People are so friendly, caring and helpful and the food is superb.” Always independent, Bill only moved in under doctor’s orders after getting cancer in his hips, though he loves it now he’s there. Let me tell you a little of his life story.
...continued on next page
...continued from previous page Bill worked all his life and never took hand-outs. But now he needs your help. One of his brothers had died in WWI and another had lost an arm. His father had fought as well. So Bill felt it his duty to honour their sacrifice and fight in WWII. As you’ll recall, Bill was hit by a shell in France which cost him his right leg. He was brought back to England for treatment where the doctors also found damage to his left leg, his shoulder and his hand too. Over six months he healed and was given a tin leg. Soon after, he was introduced to Blesma. Other men might have given up on life, or reduced their ambitions. Not Bill. He refused to accept hand-outs or join the dole and in no time at all he was back at work helping returning PoWs. After the war ended, despite his disabilities, Bill was determined to live life to the full. Among his many achievements he bought a mill, worked as a sales rep for a brewery, ran a Post Office, trained as a Special Needs teacher, drove rally cars and also became a Dad.
• A gift of £10 could pay for 2 days’ worth of the hearty meals that Bill loves. • A gift of £56 could pay for a care worker for 3 hours to take Bill out for a refreshing stroll along the seafront. • A gift of £176 could pay for a full day’s residential care from serving morning tea to helping him safely to bed at night. Although you can’t meet them in person. I thought you might like to say ‘thank you’ to our members for all they’ve done for their country. Of course it’s up to you, but I’m enclosing a sheet of notepaper on which you could write them a message. Just send it with your donation form and we’ll show it to Bill and his friends. Thank you so much for reading this letter. I do hope you can give us a gift. Now more than ever, with centenaries on our mind, as we all honour the fallen, it’s so important to remember the living.
I think you’ll agree with me that he’s an unstoppable force of nature. I find it a humbling thought that now, at the age of 90, Bill’s lived more of his life with one leg than the whole of my own life so far (I’m currently 55). Yet at Blesma, Bill’s not unique. All of our residents and members show amazing dignity and strength in the face of all they’ve suffered.
With warmest wishes,
To offer Bill lifelong care we’re dependent on your gifts. Please give £25 today.
P.S. We’re always receiving new requests for help from soldiers injured in conflicts past and present. Please give a gift today so we’ll never need to turn anyone away.

Whenever l chat with these men and women who have given their limbs for the peace and freedom we enjoy today. I feel a tremendous sense of gratitude deep in my heart and an iron determination to ensure they get the very best care we can give them for the rest of their lives. They’re too proud to ask for your help. But I’m not. So I hope you might show them your gratitude with a gift of £25 to safeguard their future. After all, they safeguarded ours.

Mending the tiny eyes of children and premature babies requires painstaking precision because a fraction of a millimetre can make the difference between sight and blindness. That’s why we’d be powerless without a surgical microscope.

Dear <Mrs Wilson>,
Before I go on, I’d like to say a huge thank you for your past support of GOSH. We’re all so grateful. But sight is such a precious thing, I’m hoping you won’t mind if I call on your kindness once more. Better technology means better results for children. Medical technology is always improving and the latest surgical microscopes have incredible features like optical coherence tomography (OCT) that shows cross-sections of retinas in almost cellular detail. This lets surgeons like me work faster, with greater confidence and with better results for children. The difference it makes is astonishing. And when I’m operating on the tiny eyes of premature babies, I need every advantage I can get. That’s why I’d be so grateful if you’re able to send a gift... As well as showing sharper images, a new microscope will also let us record rare procedures to help train the next generation of eye surgeons in the UK and around the world, so more children’s sight can be saved.
