Des INTRODUCTION ign P Grap roce s h s i c s Mod el B uildi Con stru ng ction nter ests Doc um This portfolio of work has been assembled to showcase design work completed during the first half of my academic tenure in the Master’s of Landscape Architecture program at North Carolina State University. First and foremost, this portfolio demonstrates my design process in abstract and as applied in a studio project. Secondly, it showcases specific technical abilities such as graphics & photography, model building, and construction documentation. Beyond these topics, this portfolio includes information about my background, skills that I am currently developing, and academic interests that I plan on developing.

In developing a detail for my construction studio project. I revisited some of my early conceptual ideas as well as central themes of the final design. Using digital modeling and sketching, and AutoCAD, I developed a design for a bench. GRAPHICS The following graphics are examples of from a variety of projects utilizing various techniques. Some show the mechanics of a design, while others are meant to convey an emotional character of the space. Not all graphical elements shown were used in presentations, many of my drawings or models help me understand a site, a problem, or convey a possible solution to teammates in a group project.

This highly conceptual piece was produced for the inaugural edition of “SHIFT an academic journal produced by the NCSU student ASLA. This graphic is composed on two facing pages and one page of vellum in between as an overlay. When the center page is turned, the image and its message is modified.
Adobe PhotoShop: Conceptual art for SHIFT: journal 11
MODELS Modeling, along with sketching and diagramming, is an important part of my design process. Both physical and digital modeling allow me to explore design alternatives in three dimension, generating new alternatives, and refining concepts.
Study Models: Used from conceptual to technical design.
12
Using AutoCAD to create a complete draft of the design, laser-cut models can be made quickly and with a high degree of precision. The model to the left is from a second semester project.

Project Budget
As part of a design-build studio taught by Andrew Fox, I was given the opportunity to manage the budget and logistics for implementing a student-designed project on
Project Time Line
NCSU’s campus. I worked with a team of 4 people over a 5 week construction schedule. The project was finished on time and under budget.

INTERESTS AREAS OF INTEREST Design that supports energy-use reduction & environmental stewardship Design & development strategies that make a project more environmentally and economically efficient through the creative application of technology, re-use of materials (up-cycling). Design that focuses on environmental remediation and restoration and also human interaction with the environment to support education, natural learning and human as well as environmental health. Storm management strategies that reduce runoff and reduce pollutants entering our drinking water resources, streams, and estuaries.
Defensible design using applied research. Using qualitative and quantitative research methods to make design decisions. This includes behavior mapping, surveys, questionnaires, interviewing, community design charrettes. Using GIS for mapping and relating data to geographic space to produce a more complete understanding of a site’s issues and potential.
Context sensitive design.
In addition to site analysis, creative exploration using modeling, sketching, and abstractions to create a design that is both intrinsic to its environment and shows artful expression from the designer. Through an understanding of a site (its ecology, geography, history, sociology, & physiography) to turn it into a place highlighting its beauty and value to its users.

ACADEMIC INITIATIVE SHIFT: journal 2010 & 2011: Student-produced, peer-reviewed academic journal. SHIFT is an effort by the students of the NCSU chapter of the ASLA to produce a peer-reviewed journal featuring the best student research, writing, and design by students from around. An ambitious goal, the first edition of SHIFT was published in the Fall of 2010.

TEAMWORK COLLABORATION MANAGEMENT RESEARCH WRITING THEORY
The second edition is underway, for which I am serving as the editor. This project has taught me about project management, successfully working with others, and pulling together a quality product with limited time and budget.

INTERESTS AWARDS WINNER NCSU ASLA 2011 Bench Design Competition Project to the Right
WINNER Tri-State ASLA Award for Communication
1
SYME HALL SEATING SYSTEM TEAM: DAVID PEARSON, MATTHEW EVANS Design Values As we developed our schematic designs for a seating system, we outlined values important to the design.
Schematic Development
We developed three schematically different alternatives for seating spaces.
1.
1. The seating should reflect the values of the Syme Hall Rain Garden: • Low Impact Design: through material choices. • Support education about storm water in the environment 2. The seating should enhance the outdoor environment for students. 3. The seating should accommodate persons with mobility challenges, such as persons in a wheel-chair. 4. The seating should support a variety of social seating alternatives, • A person sitting by themselves • A small group of 2-3 people together • A large group of people

Conceptual Sketch
Anthropometric measurements were obtained from databases. Popliteal and lower back heights were calculated using a “Design for Mean” approach - the mean of the 50th percentile of male and female popliteal heights determined seat height. This approach made certain the design met ergonomic standards.
