A Brief Guide to Balustrade A balustrade is a row of balusters that repeat themselves – the balusters, on the other hand, are small posts designed to offer support to the upper rail of a railing. It often happens that balustrades are used for staircases, balconies, decks, verandas, entrance ways and porches, not only for their increased functionality but also because they add to the aesthetics and the value of the entire structure. Sometimes, balustrades are an utmost necessity especially for very high staircases, as they add extra security to them and prevent people from falling off the edge. The term of “balustrade” comes from the Latin word of “Balaustium”, and it is used to describe a structure that resembles a pomegranate flower. By choosing the right balustrade from your home, you can add an outstanding finishing touch to your remodelling project. What Are The Most Common Types Of Balustrades Available? Given the increasing popularity of these structures, there are several different choices in terms of balustrades. The lace balustrade is by far the most common option, mainly because it is versatile enough to be embedded in the design of both modern and traditional home. This particular type usually adds a touch of vintage to the home, and they have a pre-determined design that makes them look very delicate and refined. This is precisely why most of those who opt for a home remodelling project usually add a lace balustrade around their balconies or staircases as well. Glass balustrades, on the other hand, are equally exquisite. Even though this type of balustrade is not as commonly met as the one mentioned above (mainly because it is more expensive, it requires more maintenance than the lace balustrade and it does not provide the same amount of support), it can still be a great addition to your home, especially if you plan to increase its value. Nonetheless, it must be said that glass balustrades are usually used for aesthetic purposes rather than for functional purposes, as glass cannot withstand too much pressure. Glass is both classic and modern at the same time, and this balustrade can be frameless, fully framed or only half-framed, depending on the overall design of your home. Those who own traditional, old cottages should know that they can benefit from exquisite balustrades as well. Some of the oldest balustrades were made of wood, which is by far the most practical material. Wood balustrades are not just very easy to carve in, but it is also the best choice for traditional homes – however, if you plan to use it outdoors such as for your porch or your veranda, then it is very important to make sure that the wood is properly treated in order to withstand the severe weather conditions, otherwise it is prone to rotting. Wood is not as long-lasting as cement or steel, but it is certainly easier to handle and a lot more cost-effective as well. Besides this, you can easily change the paint of your wood balustrade whenever you feel like it! The last type is the iron or aluminium balustrade, which is the most durable and most intricate type, given the plethora of intriguing decorative designs you can choose from. Rust-proof and aesthetically appealing, this type of balustrade is suitable for a century-old Victorian home - and not only!
