Shierlaw Avenue (Melior) Canterbury, Victoria Inspired by the traditional Chineses fable ‘The Peach Blossom Spring’ (桃花源記), this 42-unit residential building provides an inner Utopia where the residents would become unaware of the outside world. The site is hindered at its front a busy elevated train line but is embraced by the green at its rear. In response to its context, rigid and dark front facade is designed to confront the noise and heaviness imposed by the train line. While on the building’s rear, waterfalls of lively green vines pour over its curvy light shade facade. The sharp contrast between the front and rear transforms home returning into an experience of escaping into the ethereal.

Blazey Street (Yarraberg Workspaces) Richmond, Victoria The design of Yarraberg Workspaces draws from the rich historical fabric of the surrounding suburb combining the typically brick warehouse typology of the immediate surrounds with the intricate and decorative facades found lining the high streets of Richmond. This proposal provides a high-quality addition to the streetscape and surrounding urban fabric of Richmond, designed to be viewed from all angles within the urban realm.

Mambourin Village Mambourin, Victoria Mambourin Village is envisaged as an inclusive communal centre. The village and it’s open piazza are proposed as the heart of the surrounding catchment with strong green connections to draw residents from neighbouring developments by foot and by bike to flexible and activated spaces. Incorporating community involvement in the urban farm and other sustainable measures employed within the village centre helps to promote a holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle. By creating places that have a strong connection to nature it is possible to increase retail trade, reduce crime and improve mental and physical health.

New Asia Campus Dormitory Chinese University of Hong Kong This is a schematic design proposal submission to the open call by the CUHK in 2013. Our scheme was chosen among a hundred competing teams; and our office was appointed to be in charged of the detail design for the project. With the advice from the SANAA office (JP), this project was carefully designed with excellent functionality and an elegant appearance. We made models in varies scales in order to study every single space in the hostel. The unique facade design is one of the highlights in this project. In 2019, all tender drawings are completed and submitted. The building is now under construction.

The brief has a requirement of 300 dormitories, 6 pantries and a list of specific common spaces: a multipurpose hall, a reading room, a fitness room and computer rooms. It has been a challenge to fit in all the required programs together with E&M operational spaces within the given site area.

Highlighted in red is the given site area. Upon several site visits and surveys, we identified a platform located 10m below the given site which could be another potential building area. With the intention of providing an architectural and spacious scheme, we decided to push beyond the site boundary and made use of this potential area to avoid the designing of a massive building.

The water tower is one of the most valuable monuments at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. It was clear that preserving the view of the water tower from the main campus is significant; thus we took the step of merging the building with the natural landscape. This strategy greatly reduced the height of the building and put structure and its surrounding green environment in harmony.
There is a huge cantilever block in the scheme we proposed. After consulting the structural engineer, a large truss was designed to support the block. Together with the truss, concrete columns and beams make up a large open space for the multi-purpose hall.

Vertical Urban Farm UNISA My thesis topic for Master of Architecture at Uni SA is urban farming in Adelaide. My research study shows that Adelaide has always been one of the greenest and healthiest cities in the country; which has also played an important role in the history of agricultural production of Australia. To perpetuate this history of well-being and propagate green farming as a model of new farming form that is adapted to our modern needs and constraints, I think Adelaide could be the starting point of introducing urban farming. Agricultural production is not the only purpose of the design of vertical farming. The building is designed as a symbol of progression, renewal of agriculture, and advancement in technology. By establishing agriculture vertically, I intend to erect an icon of a new era.

Larkin Boulevard Essendon Fields, Victoria When I joined the Essendon Fields’ ARC design competition, I decided that this site will be the testing ground and continuing experiment of my thesis. In response to the call for a new standard office space, my design proposal introduces landscape as its open ground access which pulls into itself the envisaged green spine on the master plan, and acts as an evolving and shifting meeting place which bring people together. The courtyard design does not only provide daylight deep into the building for its occupants, but also enables the light filled landscape common ground to become a truly accessible, continuous, and welcoming green space for the community. Lamp Exhibition Center Guzheng City, China As one of the most well-developed cities in China, Guzheng is well known as “The City Of Lamp”. A new exhibition center is designed as the new landmark of the city. The Revolving Lamp (走馬燈) was invented around 1,000 years ago in China. It is an invaluable inspiration and backbone for the development of photography and motion documentation. Our team took the concept of revolving lamp as principle for the facade design which turns out to have enforced a strong visual impact on both the interior and the exterior of the building. This feature on the facade also provides sun framing effect at day-time and acts as a lamp shade for external view at night-time.

Baiyun Hospital Baiyun City, China This is a hospital design competition for Baiyun City, China. With the advantage of the site context, our team made use of its nearby river and mountain ridge to define the natural landscape as part of the design. The Chinese character 心 (Heart) inspired the form of the hospital. Heavy stroke defines the functional zones while light strokes are the interconnecting space between each area. The traditional Chinese courtyard elements were incorporated in order to enlarge the medical-green area. We aimed to design a hospital that is closely bond to nature in hope to create a more comfortable space for both patients and staffs.

Intertwining Pavilion Hong Kong University This is a design experiment of a modular system using timber as the only material. The properties of timber were first analyzed and experimented; by cutting, laminating, bending and interlocking timber sheets, our team came up with a component design which is capable of interlocking in two dimensions. Assembling these units in different configurations will result in timer bars, curves, single and double curved surfaces. To test the potential and effects of the timber modular system, we constructed an experimental pavilion (W3.5 x H2m) with 400 timber units which brought about beautiful shadow patterns under the sun.

Port Resolution Bungalow Project Port Resolution, Tanna Island, Vanuatu The project was initiated by the Chiefs and elders of Tanna Island. For long, the native has been seeking for a sustainable business model for running community based tourism enterprises. It is their wish to generate income for secondary schooling without sacrificing their traditional culture and land ownership. This project started in early 2012. Upon several site visits, students of UniSA came up with a bungalow scheme; it was then further developed by another group in 2013. I was involved in the fifth and sixth trips in April and June 2016. Our group are responsible for finalizing the design and making construction drawings. During the span of the project, I spent one month on the island working on site and constructing using local materials such as volcanic ash and corals.

WEST KOWLOON CULTURAL DISTRICT ART PAVILION COMPETITION This simple scheme for an Art Pavilion combines a white cube on the inside with a permeable frame on the outside. How to situate the white cube in an urban garden, creating a fluid transition back and forth? The privileged site is at the tip if the West Kowloon Cultural District, in a low-density, bucolic zone on the harbour’s edge. The outer frame suggests an urban presence for the Art Pavilion, but this permeable, constantly shifting threshold also conveys an ephemeral quality that defines Hong Kong’s urban personality. The white cube takes the basic form of a shoebox, its dimensions well suited for a variety of installations and acoustically the most robust. The southern end of the cube pierces through the outer shell ever so subtly, allowing for the potential for fuller engagement with the harbour and skyline beyond. A very narrow slit in the ceiling lets in natural light if desired. The roof of the white cube is accessible. A narrow second gallery / viewing platform runs the length of the white cube on the
